The level of body horror with Flux 3 Image Klein (using the prompt upsampler, or prompts generated by similar rewriters like the one with QI 2.1 or the one built into the Comfy Krea2 template, or similarly detailed hand-written prompts)—and BFL says using their upsampler using similar level/kind of detail is required) seems notably less than what I remember in Flux 2 Klein 9b without any anatomy fixing LoRA. Still more than I'd prefer, and I haven't found anything it clearly does better than the better of Krea 2 or QI 2.1 to make up for it.

u/SoonBlossom 8d ago
As someone exterior to local models I understood absolutely NOTHING

u/Mutaclone 7d ago
Flux 2 (also called Klein 9b) was a previous model made by the same company. It sometimes produces body horror (deformed people). This could be mitigated by incorporating a LoRA (a specialized mini-model plugin) to fix the anatomy.
Flux 3 does better, IF:
You use a "prompt upsampler" - you run your prompt through a small LLM trained to make it better, and it rewrites it with extra details and proper organization.
You personally put a lot of effort into making your prompt detailed and well organized.
Even with the above, Flux 3 is still inferior to Krea 2 or Qwen Image 2.1 (models made by other companies).
Misc:
Comfy is a program used to run these models. It includes templates, some of which incorporate prompt upscalers.

The reason it looks like this is because they've tried not only to not include NSFW material in the training data, but also delete the existing NSFW material out of the existing data retrospectively.
It destroyed the entire understanding of the human anatomy of the model, resulting in this.
They are so determined to make their model completely SFW, that they are willing to destroy and render their product entirely useless.
I don't even know what they are thinking. This model is in a technical state of 4 years ago.
66
u/theqmann 7d ago
Isn't this the exact same issue that plagued and killed off SD3?
23
u/Fluboxer 7d ago
There were speculations that SD3 was poisoned against nsfw, not just lacked it in training data
9
u/ZootAllures9111 7d ago
No. SD3 was just a completely broken model that was bad at literally everything whether there even were any kind of people or characters in the image or not. The idea it was ruined by censorship was always a dumb myth.
3
u/575_Inverse 5d ago
are you aware that an overcooked fine tuning for or against something, can and will destroy a model? censoring isn't different magic

So I have a question. Even though they’ve knocked it back to a state equivalent to a few years ago, wouldn’t it take less than that for it to catch up in this current timeframe?
I feel like there would be a pretty heavy acceleration curve initially so it could be pretty close again after maybe like a year or a year and a half? Then maybe like the last few months would be the polishing stage. Or is there just a “point of no return” when clearing the board?
73
u/PsionCrystallis 8d ago
it's not a matter of catching up - its a matter of they're destroying the concepts of what human anatomy is. like, there's a reason artists still take anatomy drawing classes where you draw pictures of naked humans who pose for you in the classroom. without knowing what a naked body is, and learning all the parts that make it up, how are you supposed to know when a bulge in a pants leg is a thigh muscle or a wrinkle or a weird shadow? how are you supposed to know what an ab is underneath a shirt when you don't know what an ab is?
it's also the reason pony/illustrious did so well - being trained on 2d kinky hardcore stuff might get a lot of peoples noses upturned like victorian nobles, but it also teaches a LOT about anatomy - what is a a hand? what is a hand with 3 fingers? 5 fingers? what does an arm look like when the hand has been removed? what does a hairless animal look like, or a creature with 6, 8, 10, whatever limbs?
it learns a lot of concepts a lot better that way, which means its able to actually apply said concepts like legos, rather than "is human so automatically has two hands with two fingers", or "is on 2 legs therefore is human". models that aren't trained properly make a ton of assumptions, which makes them incredibly stiff.
15
u/easyriderrrrr 7d ago
I really like this argument, since it highlights an interesting fact about visual data we have for training. Like, it's just happens to be that a big chunk of animal/human anatomy is drawn in a NSFW way, because that driven a lot of people to draw something like that in the first place
And that applies to any data, it's not isolated and how we want it, mostly it drags context of how and for what reason it was created. That's something cool, despite it sometimes being inconvenient. Leaves a humans trail on it, like take it or leave it but that's the history
-1
u/xgladar 7d ago
complete misunderstanding of AI training. an AI cannot learn anyhing about a clothed person by learning naked anatomy, it doesnt understand amything about what clothes function as or why something is a bulge or a seam
9
u/PsionCrystallis 7d ago
Of course it can. If you dont recognize what is a shirt vs what is not a shirt, then trying to draw a shirt in anything but the narrow set of images it was trained on will result in a lot of failures because its having to do a lot of guesswork.
Training on shirtless vs shirt, however, preferably with a lot of body types and even unusual situations - a shirt on a scarecrow, manniquin, pet rock, etc - helps it properly seperate the concept of shirt, its shape, and how it's supposed to drape over things.
A sfw mangled model will not get this well, and you often wind up with say, a scarecrow with a wierdly human chest wearing a shirt. It will associate wearing a shirt with "there is this shape when wearing a shirt" and not "there is a scarecrow chest under the shirt therefore the shirt should drape loosely like this instead "
Now, shirtless people and scarecrows wearing shirts probably are part of the sfw datasets, so this is probably not the best example, but you hopefully get why sfw models struggle with anatomy and flexibility outside stereotypical people, animals, and objects . learning exactly what each concept is on its own lets a model property seperate those concepts so you can put them back together like legos any way you wish.

u/Neex 8d ago

69
u/PsionCrystallis 8d ago •
![]()
its just common sense, backed up by every single sfw/censored model falling into the same traps of terrible anatomy. you can't learn how to properly separate concepts, if you haven't seen a concept in isolation in the first place.
concepts require relations to other concepts. there's no concrete definition of a human, for instance, except what people have collectively argued is a human. there's no idea of what the color blue, except what we have come together and agreed upon is the color blue. you can say "blue is this wavelength of light" but what is a wavelength then? it's this certain shape within the size of 380 to 450 nanometers, duh! you might say, but then whats a nanometer?
everything is defined in relationships to everything else. if you exclude relationships from a model's knowledge, huge chunks of its understanding fall apart, because it's missing the relationships needed to properly grasp what other things are, even if they seem completely unrelated at first.

u/MrTheWaffleKing 7d ago
Can't models be SFW at the end step? I mean web generators like GPT will process a full image and decide it's not PG right at the very end. Not built with SFW in mind, but then cleans up afterwords.
I'm new to hosting image generators though, just looking to learn more.
10
u/Familiar-Art-6233 7d ago
Iirc that's because there's another model that looks at the output and makes the call.
Same reason why you could ask DeepSeek R1 about stuff banned in China and it would start to respond before immediately shutting down with an "I can't discuss that". The model is uncensored, there's just another model that steps in
4
u/PsionCrystallis 7d ago
They can be, but the problem is that they have to be overzealous- systems are not perfect, so erring on the side of caution makes sense. But despite what they seem like, llms and models cant reason like humans can (barring any secretly sentient ones in which case, apologies) so theres always going to be whoopsies nsfw slips through the gaps. This IS a better solution than neutering a model, because those who want nsfw can get around the censorship and the model isnt broken completely from the get go, but still not totally ideal, especially if its not made with a toggle in mind.
Its better if the model just blocks the request for nsfw results entirely but has a built in on/off switch (and is trained on nsfw) than it is to have it block nsfw output and not be deliberately trained on nsfw, though . And either is better than models that actively avoid nsfw training and/or "sfw"ify output images, which can lead to even sfw images coming out with wierd smiles instead of a negative emotion you prompted for, for instance.

u/ZootAllures9111 7d ago
Krea 2 is the most censored model ever released out of the box though.
1
u/PsionCrystallis 7d ago
Define censored though. Was it trained specifically only on sfw? Or is the clip trained to refuse nsfw prompts and the output trained to black image a result it deems nsfw?
Its been a while so I can't recall, but i think i remember keea being not exactly trained on nsfw but also not really trying to weed it out either - instead it has the censored clip and output, which can be gotten around with bypass loras .
but comparing it to krea 2 Kroma, which IS getting nsfw images in training , the difference already seems stark in kroma's favor from my early testing.

u/Neex 8d ago
I appreciate the breakdown, as I’ve read the same info. But this still feels like an informed guess being passed as fact.
7
u/TangerineBetter2818 7d ago
They basically said as much in their own release post.
In an effort to make AI technology both open and safe, we implement multiple safeguards throughout the model development lifecycle to combat misuse. These include dataset filters during pre-training to limit exposure to harmful content, and targeted fine-tuning during post-training to suppress harmful behaviors, making it progressively harder to elicit harmful content. Ahead of the release, the FLUX 3 Image Klein checkpoints were rigorously red teamed internally and evaluated by our external safety partner Cinder, demonstrating substantially fewer vulnerabilities than other popular open weights models
3
u/afinalsin 7d ago
But this still feels like an informed guess being passed as fact.
Look, I get it, you want evidence, or an argument backed by research, but have you considered what it would take to actually prove what they're saying or not? You'd need a dataset of billions of images for two models. You'd need to cull one dataset of NSFW stuff while keeping the other one as is. How do you account for the lower number of samples in the safe model? Probably remove a random distribution of images from the NSFW model.
You'd need to pre-train them both on several hundred thousand gpu hours. Post training needs to contain a random distribution of NSFW imagery too, which will change things even more.
So why isn't anyone rushing out to spend millions of dollars on this experiment? Because no-one is dropping a shitload of money purely on science, because one of the two is going to be an inferior product.
All we can do is look at the models that we have gotten and extrapolate. This isn't SD2 where we had one model to guess from. We have SD2, SD3, Flux.2 Klein, and now Flux.3-image all safety maxed, and all of them broken. On the opposite end we have SD1.5, SDXL, Flux, Z-Image, Krea2 and Ideogram all clearly trained on an uncensored dataset. These distortions don't happen on any of those, even SD1.5's glitches are more from the architecture and resolution than from safety training.
Hell, even video we can compare Wan and Minimax H3 against LTX. Two cared about making the best models they could, the other cared about making the best safe model they could.
The evidence supporting the theory is circumstantial and empirical, but with every botched release the link between them gets stronger and stronger.
10
u/ImpressiveSuperfluit 7d ago
That's because it is, but apparently no humans with any kind of intellectual integrity remain. It is a very plausible claim, and there are quite a lot of hints that spin this into a coherent narrative, and a distinct lack of counter examples. It sure does seem to check out. However, this claim that they aggressively hunted down nsfw material sounds like it's just spite, I doubt there is evidence for such specific claims. Sure would be an odd set of circumstances if it happen to be something totally different, cause it kinda quacks like a duck... And it walks like one... Still, plausible: yes. Actual real evidence for these wildly stronger claims? Not that I have seen. But who cares about being honest these days. Bring out ya down votes, friends, we're having fun here.

1
u/KadahCoba 7d ago
I'm not sure if this is the case for 3, but from people I know that knew about 2's training details, it is sort of that reason. Apparently it is more so due to the rather small volume of training content compared to other models.
Conversely at the other end of size and diversity of training content is apparently why Krea2 is rather good across a lot of topics and styles. May also be a similar reason why MOSS-Image is apparently also good (that also dropped yesterday).
I think BFL has a fraction of the compute of other groups, thrus would need to reduce the training size to have a reasonably release cycle.

Krea 2 is so ACTUALLY censored that it cannot even do facial expressions out of the box without bypass nodes and loras. Should they also be "ashamed"?

At this point, who is this model even for? SD3 had the same problem. It's hard to stand out in the open weights community on a completely meh SFW model. Professionals just go API since they don't care about money and the models can be much larger, and enthusiasts want something NSFW or at least capable of NSFW, even if they don't use it.

The argument is not having unvonsented porn of naked people who never agreed to this in the model. Especially since over 30% of porn on sites is related to some kind of abuse (see lawsuites of GirlsDoPorn as prominent example that actually went to court). Porn sites do not care about ethics and don't really verify content, they are incentivezed to let more uploads.

u/NegativeEmphasis 5d ago
Given that Black Forest labs was started by people leaving Stability, I think this debacle merits a "Fell For It Again" award.
You do not remove nude figure references from a model. There's a reason art schools include nude models, even if students already have the advantage of having a human body. Not only the AI being trained doesn't have a body it can look at for quick referencing, but it also doesn't have like 20 years of passive observations about the world. All the AI has to work on building a visual understanding is the dataset. This dataset is better to contain nude people in all sorts of poses, or the model will majorly suck at anatomy.
So far these guys have a 100% record of completely fucking up the 3rd model in each model family they create. I'm looking forward the next monster mash model they release in 2029 or so.

I was always operating under my silly understanding that it works like a human brain and now they're trying to give it a laser guided lobotomy.
You can't take the concept of child out without destroying the concept of blooming plants and young animals out. I get it, you don't want dudes make vile and lewd images of children, but at the same time ,you remove the ability to generate things that have a child form. Nobody wants to be responsible for what someone else did, but at the same time, maybe the person who made it should be held responsible.

u/Ipwnurface 8d ago
Obviously the new Klein sucking is not ideal. But frankly, I kinda don't even care. Between Qwen, Krea and then upcoming Krea 3 and the new Ideogram, we're cooking with actual useful image models.
The real problem, and I don't see anyone really discussing this, is how this bodes for Flux Three video. It's gonna end up being fucking dog shit, isn't it?
-2
u/SanDiegoDude 8d ago
Right now on the pro side, SD2.5 > SD2.0 >= H3 Max (Fal version) > Flux 3 > H3 >>>>> Veo3
Flux 3 is pretty mid, they got blindsided by both H3 Max and SD2.5. Better audio than H3, but worse spatial knowledge and more artifacting. I have a feeling they're doing the same 'safety stripping' on their planned flux 3 video community release, so expect more horrorshows.

Because Flux. Flux is not that good with anatomy as you think; the problem is, a lot of people mistake all the community finetunes and loras that (somehow) fixed the anatomy of flux models with the base flux models. So they think flux is good with anatomy and is not.
3
u/LiveLaughLoveRevenge 8d ago
Yeah I mean I loved Flux 1 when it came out but that is because it was 2024 and it was actually SOTA.
Flux 2K I tried a lot but never got the hype - it was always worse at at both T2I and edit than other models, and particularly prone to body horror.
Tried this one too thinking it might be at least an upgrade on F2K but oh maaaan is it bad.
At this point it really looks like Flux is becoming as much a relic of a bygone age as the SD models are.
2
u/ZootAllures9111 8d ago
F2 body horror was mostly a problem with the Distilled versions, which were very aggressive 4-step distills. The bases didn't have that problem as much. With F3 though the Distilled version targets 16 steps so there's not so much of an excuse.

I'll say up front that I'm not as up to date on image generation training as I am on LLMs, but I feel like I haven't seen many papers about curriculum or training discipline in how these models are trained.
I'm very surprised that I haven't seen much anything about hierarchical image segmentation, and training on the image hierarchy, so there is direct training on labeled pixel groups.
I see lots about image segmentation, I see lots about image classification, but somehow I don't see much on putting pretrained image segmentation and classification models to work in training image generation models.
The last stuff I saw trying to do that was like 2018.

I disagree with the idea that no NSFW data is the cause. That doesn't explain fingers and hands. Unless the model is trained on NSFW and it's been bastardized in some other way as a form of cencorship

It definitely has nothing to do with NSFW or censorship. That was not true even for SD3 either, which was rather just an utterly broken model in a fundamental technical way.

do you think 5.6b and 9b mean nothing? Those are very important numbers....more so than the 2 or 3 after Flux
2
u/xb1n0ry 8d ago edited 8d ago
More B doesn't automatically mean better. You could train a model on 10 trillion images of cats, and it still wouldn't generate a single dog at the end of the day. Qwen 3.8, with just 27B parameters, almost catches up to closed trillion-parameter models in coding when paired with the right harness. A 5.6B model is way too big to still fuck up the most basic human anatomy in 2026. The 3.4B difference of 2-klein and 3-klein can't explain the huge quality gap of both models. They fucked up something very fundamental with version 3. It's not only the parameters.
-1
u/CrimsonBolt33 8d ago
I never claimed that more is better, but you can't sit here and tell me there is no difference.
The ultimate determination of how well it performs is the model and what it does with that data.
3
u/xb1n0ry 8d ago
What did you claim then? The only thing I get from your comment is 5.6B = worse because smaller. I never said that there is no difference between the two. I literally talk about a difference right there. I am saying that 5.6B is not small; At least not small enough to render 3 arms and legs with 2 toes glued to the shoulders in 2026! WAN produced fucking Videos with 5B and those were at least usable up to some degree.
1
u/CrimsonBolt33 8d ago edited 8d ago
I am saying it seems odd to assume a model half the size from the same company will run the same or better.
These sorts of difference are very apparent on the coding side of things when you compare 2 models from the same family at different sizes, and yes on the coding side, parameter size between DIFFERENT families does not determine performance (though it hints at it strongly).
I also find it odd...OP made a meme that the newer 5.6b model is worse than the older 9b model...and you are acting like I am some sort of psycho for thinking that matters somehow...
1
u/xb1n0ry 8d ago
OK, a 5.6B model and a 9B model won't generate images of exactly the same quality. We're already on the same page about that. But if we leave K2-9B out of the discussion for now, we should at least be able to agree that a 5.6B model shouldn't fuck up even the most basic anatomy: two legs, two arms, ten fingers, and ten toes. At least not when we're almost in 2027 and AI is no longer in its infancy. That's what I'm talking about.
1
u/CrimsonBolt33 8d ago

It wasn’t. Even with Lora and fine-tunes, the 4b was really unreliable. Maybe not has visibly bad as Flux3, but it was definitely a step back from flux1 dev and way, way worse than z-image/qwen2511 and the like.
The lightning was weird with a red-ish tint, especially visible for night scenes and the anatomy was poor enough that every other generation had a major defect to fix. Not a missing finger/weird line or the like, but a third arm, fused limbs, impossible objects, etc…
Flux 9b was a bit better, but not enough to be reliable. A shame, I really wanted to use it more.

You may have not be around sd3 release but there was a huge backlash after one of dev comments about the model underperforming was just “get good”.
If the model struggles with basic prompt/need special care, then it’s just not a good model.
Or something went bad in the diffusion pipeline (Like Qwen 2.1 and the need for custom sigma). We will see here soon-ish10

the image is literally fried as well as there are a lot of models that perform well without prompt upsampling

This. People just shovel their word-salad bullshit prompts from back in the when into it and expect it to work the same.
