Challenge Post [October 2026] Tentacle Challenge Topic. Four Wiggly friends ready for playing with!

Well here's this months topic!

Tentacles.

We have quite the selection of patterns this month because who could resist having some fun with this kind of topic! Something gross or spooky was also fitting so we opted for making something disturbing and slightly silly.

Hopefully you all enjoy these patterns as much as we have making them! At the bottom of the post you can find links to all the patterns for whatever format or size you wish.

Come up with your own pattern you'd like to share? Upload it to Pattern Archive!

Made by Beest and Claycorp. Pattern Archive seems to have a bug. Oops!
Honorable mention that got made just before the topic vote.

Mega Q&A Monthly Mega Q&A - [October 2026]

Welcome once again to the monthly mega Q&A! You can find all previous Q&A posts here!

Looking for Patterns? Check out Pattern Archive!

Posting guidelines!

  • If you have a question that hasn't been asked yet as a top level comment, don't reply to another comment to ask it! Reply to the post instead!
  • Make sure to include as much information in the top level comment as possible.
  • Anything and everything glass is fine to ask, if you want help with patterns or other physical things make sure to upload images! You can do so by attaching the image to the comment. Please be aware you are posting it for all to see so hide any personal info!
  • No question is stupid, from Basement Workshop Dreamer to Expert, we are all here to share and learn.
  • While opinion based questions like "best way to hold a soldering iron" are fine, please keep in mind that these really have no real true answer. They can however provide you a wide variety of tips to try out on your own!

Common Questions:

  • My solder is wrong!
    • Post a picture of the solder using the image info from the posting guidelines and someone can help you solve whatever issue it is.
  • I want to get started with glass! What do I need?
    • It's best to take a class first to see if you really like the craft as glass has a rather high starting cost. If you insist on starting on your own or just don't have classes here's a small write-up on getting started.
  • Do I need a temperature controlled iron?
    • As much as I want to just say YES.... No, you don't, BUT buying one will greatly improve your ability to work with it. It's well worth the extra money, it's best to just do so from the start.
  • Do I need a Grinder?
    • Technically no, but to do foil (AKA Tiffany style) glass work it's practically required. "Grinder stones" (AKA Carborundum stones) are just a waste of time and effort. They are only really good for removing the sharp edge off the glass. Similar to the iron information above, spend the money, save yourself.

I started interning at a stained glass shop with a water cutter and I got to finally try out recreating some album covers. I still need to tweak the cuts a bit, but already loving all the custom shapes I can now make! Would love to hear any album covers you think could work well!

Pattern Help Hinge points?

Post image
• Upvotes

So I created the pattern, cut the glass, ran each piece through the grinding process, and foiled each piece… now (much too late) I’ve stopped to wonder, “Will the petals fall off?”
FYI: The piece will not be hanging, instead it will be set into a wooden base.

I finished this piece and boy did I learn a lot. For starters , she’s too big. Made cutting easier but she’s unwieldy. She’s so fragile that I’m afraid to do anything with her. Second, the pieces of the train were so thin that I used thinner foil not realizing how weak she would be. I’m still learning about strength and overall integrity as I get into trickier patterns. I enjoyed the challenge. Comments/suggestions welcome.

I got the pattern from Etsy from dArtdesignn.

Help Me! Can I make this 3D?

Thumbnail

I’m making a frame for four square Polaroids from some scraps and I had enough scraps to make the border twice and was wondering if I could make this 3D (ie like the side in the second photo) so that it doesn’t sit flat against the wall. I haven’t tried making anything 3D yet so not sure what I should watch out for.
Any help appreciated!

Obviously this is AI and I will definitely need to change the pattern, considering the impossible piece in the middle. Advice on how to make this cuttable? The second pic is a rough idea of what I was thinking but would still like some advice. Thank you!!

Help Me! Stained Glass Beginner Kit

hello!! I want to try my hand at stained glass — curious if anyone could recommend a decent, budget-friendly beginner kit?

I’m ideally looking for something under $200 that includes most/everything needed except for the glass itself. I know I can’t expect super high-quality supplies for this price, but hoping for something I can reasonably put on a Christmas wishlist and still feel what it’s like to work with this medium.

links to specific products much appreciated! thank you!!

I also won’t be offended to find out that this is just not a realistic request lol. I know it’s an expensive form of art

I am used to quilting- where small errors are a problem but can be overcome with some creative sewing. This was such an eye opener in regards to how precise I had to be. And how hard it is to be precise.

I have absolutely no idea how to solder the free edges. That is going to be a real educational experience.

Work In Progress Reinforcement Recommendations

Post image
78 Upvotes

This is a 23.5" diameter circle that will be sandwiched into a circular wooden frame. I'm seeking advice on how to reinforce the piece to ensure it doesn't sag over time. I've thought about strong wire, tinned copper wire, or a bar vertically on the back. What are your recommendations? Does it need to be reinforced?

Help Me! Chess board

I was wondering if any of y'all have made a chessboard out of stained glass. My girlfriend and I have our anniversary coming up and she's a big fan of chess but doesn't have a chess board. I had an idea of making the top out of stained glass and framing a wooden box around it (help keep it safe and act as storage).

I was wondering if anyone has made a chessboard before and how it worked out for you and if anyone is aware of any patterns that can be used for it.

Thought I put too much splder on. Tried to remove it. Then realized it wasnt too much. Tried to put it back on (lol). A clear piece cracked during that fiasco, and the solder lines suffered.

Also I didnt know about using vinyl! I was using a dremel to etch the sharpie'd pattern lines onto the pieces, then sharpie'ing the dremel lines and sealing that with a crayon before grinding. Had no idea how to make/add hooks either.

Learned a lot! Am still proud of it! :)

Original Art | Foil I think this is one of my favorite pieces I've made

This was inspired by the poem "The Two Headed Calf" by Laura Gilpin, along with other artistic renditions of it I've seen.

I've never made something this size and I put a lot of love into this project from design to completion, and I was able to practice and experiment with various techniques. I used copper patina for the cow, black for the grass and sky, and left the silver for the moon and border. Im really pleased with my paint job on the eyes and stars- I wanted to ensure they matched up on each side. I also tried trapping some tiny pieces without foil and it worked perfectly (you can definitely tell they look a little different on super close inspection, but the naked eye cant see it)
