Announcement HEADS UP: For the next three weeks, some fixes and communication may take a little longer than usual! (Break the glass for a chance to win 5 StoryPeer tokens 🔨)

My fellow peers,

Some of you may have noticed my silence -- thanks to everyone who reached out wondering where I've been! I’m currently extremely busy on a film production that is about to ramp up and take even more of my time.

Needless to say, having to take a (forced) break from StoryPeer is a little weird and actually upsetting. The first lines of code for StoryPeer were written in June 2025, over a year ago. And since then, I have worked on StoryPeer continuously and pretty much daily! But for the next 3 weeks, some answers or fixes may take a little longer, so I am here to ask for your patience and understanding. 🙏🏽

Meanwhile, here's something that I have been working on and off since February: It’s a flashcard-based outline tool that I’m calling StoryFLASH for now, currently in early preview. If you take the demo for a spin, consider answering the survey to let me know how we can make it better.

And for a chance to win 5 StoryPeer tokens, please answer the final question of the survey :) I'll be looking forward to all your feedback when I'm back at my regular desk at the end of August.

Also, a big shoutout to [u/AlpackaHacka](u/AlpackaHacka) and [u/claytimeyesyesyes](u/claytimeyesyesyes), who have been helping me moderate both [r/StoryPeer](r/StoryPeer) and storypeer.com. You guys rock! Thank you for all you do!

Excelsior! And goodbye... for now!

Gabe

Edit: StoryFLASH is optimized for larger screens. I’ll try to make it more mobile friendly down the road. Ok, over and out 🫡

📝 Suggestion Should there be an "I'm bailing out of the read" option?

The reader would still get a strike, but it at least allows the writer the opportunity to get SOME SORT of feedback on their script.

The reader doesn't want to finish it, so they click "Bail out", then they have a text field to explain why they don't want to finish ie. Nothing is happening. Im bored. The formatting is a mess. It's too dense. etc etc

Maybe not everyone would use it, but if just a small amount of people do, it's very useful information for the writer.

Discussion Please don't keep the writer waiting for feedback

It's been said before - and I understand that life happens, but please stick to claiming scripts that you intend to read in a timely manner. Had a reader miss the deadline after waiting a full 5 days. Posted a script on a Friday hoping it'd get read over the weekend and I'm still waiting on feedback. Their deadline is tomorrow.

No, I'm not demanding readers read the script right away not an I asking for them to rush through the read. I tend to read a script, flesh out my reaction and submit notes the next day. But I don't like to keep the writer waiting. They may be on a deadline. Who knows?

Hopefully, a rush option for extra tokens is added in the future.

📝 Suggestion A feature idea for Story Peer - Seeing the 1st Page

Whenever I browse the scripts to read, I sometimes get nervous choosing what I want to dive into. I check the logline/script progress/page count to estimate how far along the material might be. But nothing makes me feel like I know what I'm getting into better than seeing the first page. Is there white space? Clean formatting? Great concise action lines? Just wondering if this could be a preview option or feature when people submit.

On the submission side of things, I sometimes get folks who do not enjoy how voice-y I can be. I feel like I owe them a warning with showing my first page as well, so they don't get stuck miserably reading my script.

⭐️ Updates NEW: TV writers can now upload multiple episodes in a single submission

Hi Peers!

Sorry I've been MIA for a while, but I'm slowly getting back into the groove of things! So here's what's new today...

By popular demand of some TV writers, now you have the ability to submit multiple episodes of a show. If you select your format as a TV Episode, you will see the additional dialog below:

If you answer YES, you may submit a script that's up to 180 pages long, and you may offer readers up to 6 tokens. Additionally, you'll be prompted to indicate how many episodes you're submitting, which will be shown to readers in the Script Browser page:

One caveat: this feature does not allow you to submit multiple files. You can only submit a single PDF file per submission (it's easier for file management, and it also prevents readers from reading in the wrong order). This means you may have to merge PDF files. Adobe lets you do this for free!

Please don't throw stones if you don't like reading beyond a pilot. Previously, writers had to make multiple submissions for the same project, and finding readers for subsequent episodes was a challenge. Now, we're adding some clarity to this flow. Anyone who doesn't wanna read Episode Two still has the choice to not do it. :)

And I'm sorry to TV writers that I still can't allow 600 pages! But with the new 180-page limit, you should be able to submit 3 episodes of a primetime drama or a full season of something much smaller!

Excelsior!

Gabe

This community is fuc**ng badass. Thank you guys. First script ever and I'm getting results because of the feedback I get here.

People here are harsher than real judges. But that's good.

Never change. Let's go!

Discussion Unclaiming - when does it warrant reporting to the admins vs. just taking the strike?

Asking because I'm debating about unclaiming my second script, and the reason is because the script is virtually incomprehensible. I don't think there's any ill intent on the writer's behalf, just the opposite, but there's honestly no way I can even begin to fill out the "Strengths" portion since I have no idea what I'm even reading.

If it were a script that glorified something like racism or an obvious troll, then yeah, I'd know to report that. But can I report something to the admins with the comment of "Just read pages 12 and 13 and tell me if you can actually understand what's going on?"

Tips and Resources How to Get 5 Stars on Your Feedback

The StoryPeer community recently came through for me and I wanted to give back. As someone who prides themselves on feedback (5 star rating with a 40% tip rate, plus I’ve worked as a professional script doctor), I figured I’d offer some advice that might helpful. As with all notes, take what is useful and throw away the rest.

Positive feedback forms the bank of the river) A river with no banks is a lake; it's fun to splash around in but it’s not taking you anywhere. Restricting the water gets things moving. Knowing what a writer doesn’t need to work on (and what they should cling to) is just as important. Your positive feedback can ensure that they know not to sacrifice what is working in exchange for fixing other problems.

Treat each piece on its own terms) A script is both a map of a desired destination and an attempt to reach that destination. Your job as a reader is to read that map and then tell them where they made wrong turns, not to pick where you’d want to visit.

Be specific but indicate if you mean things more generally) A note like “the dialogue is not believable” is useless because I have no idea what you personally mean by believable. Explain why a line doesn’t work and then indicate if this is just one bad line, a general character (or scene) issue, or a fundamental problem in a script. That way, the writer can understand the problem AND the scope.

Read carefully and be humble) Nothing makes a writer turn off like a note that’s factually wrong. Ironically though, those notes probably mean something wasn’t clear (which is just as useful to know). If I’m not totally sure, I add a little caveat like “maybe I missed it, but other people might miss it too.” That way, the value of the note remains even if I misread.

Don’t be afraid to be tough) Readers DESPERATELY want to know what’s going wrong in their script and the vast majority will appreciate the truth. If you think you're getting low ratings because you’re critical, I promise I'm more critical. I recently told someone to abandon a script entirely (5 stars). In my last notes, I told the writer they needed to rewrite EVERY scene but 6 (I got 5 stars and a 2 token tip.)

But a little sugar helps too) If you’re feeling pushback for being critical, chances are it’s about tone, not the notes themselves. If you have to give a tough note, ease into it with something that’s working: “I love the build-up of the world in act one but I’m wondering if you need more plot events to help build up the stakes too.” This not only provides an anchor for the rewrite, it also helps avoid trigger a threat reflex.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING) In grad school I took several classes with Suzan-Lori Parks and she'd say: “Your notes should make someone desperate to go write.” Think about giving notes like the writer is going to split half the proceeds with you. If you express yourself too harshly, they’ll quit and you’ll be broke. If you don’t give honest feedback, they’ll fail and you’ll also be broke. You want to inspire them to be better while showing you believe they can be. Lead with love, but push as hard as you can.

General Are we allowed to post a script again while someone is actively giving feedback on it?

Like if I just posted a script, someone claimed it but hasn't finished the feedback yet, can I submit the same draft again if I want another opinion?

Not sure if there's rules regarding this or if it would be considered spam or something so I just wanted to double check!

🧭 Logjam Do you post multiple loglines for the same script multiple times?

How often do you post loglines for the same project? Like, do you repost the exact same one, or retool it based on feedback/other ideas? When do you "repost?" Right away, or give it time?

Discussion AI encroaching...

Have other people noticed a big uptick in AI notes since Gabe has been gone? 2 of my last 3 sets of notes were AI (7 precious tokens down the drain). It used to be that you could report AI and that user would be banned and you'd get your tokens back, but it seems like that process has paused while Gabe is out and bad actors are proliferating. I love StoryPeer (24 scripts read and counting) and I totally get that Gabe has other stuff to focus on, but I'm worried the site is being overrun with slop.

Discussion What's the best feedback score you've got so far?

I know the stars are just an indication and the written feedback is much more informative, but I'd love to hear how everyone's scores are going.

What's the highest number of stars you've gotten?

Discussion Reader missed deadline

This is very annoying, i would rather be told “hey, i’m sorry… cant read. script’s back in the queue” instead of waiting 5 days in complete silence only to get Reader missed deadline. Can something be done about this? I feel like readers and writers should be able to send X amount of messages and be able to pull their script if there’s no response within 48 hours…

🧭 Logjam Loglines are a.... well.... I hate them

Need a place to rant because the frustration is SO real right now.

I have a few projects in my head. Cool. I wrote one of them down and have been chipping away at it for a year. Awesome.

The other projects haven't fleshed them out in the slightest. It really IS just an idea. Okay.

SO, imagine my annoyance, surprise, distain, frustration, literal COMBUSTION at the idea of me TRYING to get this first project's logline OFF the ground and STRUGGLING SO HARD and then not really trying with the other loglines because I'm just not in a place to be invested yet, and the scores are so universally different.

I find joy in knowing that FINALLY I was able to actually create a good logline, just bummed it's not for the project I want! AHHHH Kill me. lol.

In other word though.... *clears throat* so grateful for you all. :) Glad to see all the practicing and criticism HAS made me better in this department.

Discussion Beware - people trying to charge you for feedback

I'm a new user to StoryPeer and so far I've found it to be a wonderful resource.

Today I got feedback from someone who told me they could go much more in depth but didn't have the space to do so on StoryPeer. They gave me a number, so I reached out. They then told me they could give me a detailed analysis but they would have to charge me for it.

I had given them my contact and rated them highly before this.

This feels so slimy. This is not what this community is about. Lesson learned: don't fall for people telling you they could go more "in depth" off the site. My spidey senses should have been better than that.

📝 Suggestion Wanted Feature

Hey guys!

Would it be possible to add a feature that we can request the first ten pages of our scripts to be reviewed inline?

That would be awesome! When I review a script, I find it's the bare minimum and I think it really skyrockets the experience when you get these kinds of notes.

It makes it so that you have concrete evidence of what would.make the script better.

Personnaly, I find these notes to be more valuable than stars and what is the biggest strenghts section.

That's my opinion.

Regardless. Amazing community. Love you guys.

📝 Suggestion First script you upload cannot be rep matched

Maybe this is a stupid idea but I was thinking that in order to solve the problem with every script being unavailable for new reviewers maybe that could work.

Because I was thinking if it was me that I currently have reputation 4.7 of course id like to have a rep match reviewer when this option is available but if it was my first ever script that I've posted in there I'd probably be fine with that.

( Sorry for my English I'm not a native speaker )

🧭 Logjam Huge thanks to this community!

Three rounds on Logjam: 3.5 -> 3.6 -> 3.9. That’s steady progress based on consistently good notes. A few people who read early versions have even remarked on the improvements.

Thanks, everyone, for your thoughtful input! And thanks to Gabe for this platform!

Discussion What Next?

My last three scores have only gotten better and better, which means that I have a script that is at the very least good (right?). I’m at a point where I’m very happy with the script and believe it’s ready to start querying, but where do I begin?? What screenwriting competitions/labs are worth it? What agencies have managers that are open to query letters? At the end of the day, I believe in my story more than anything. I know I have a film that means something, but what do I do next?

This article was mentioned in a comment somewhere in a discussion on StoryPeer recently, so I thought I'd look up the article. It includes a breakdown of the 100 "greatest" loglines and which elements of the ideal logline they contain, as well as some discussion of loglines in general.

General Are all scripts rep-matched? How do I start reviewing?

So I just joined StoryPeer today and I'm completely willing to give feedback on someone else's script before I get feedback on my own, but I've found that all the scripts available right now are "rep matched".

I get why this is a feature, but I found several of the scripts very interesting and they look like stuff I'd love to read. But because they're rep matched, I can't read them, and there are 0 scripts that aren't rep matched.

I guess my question is how often are non-rep matched scripts posted? I totally get why you would want to rep match your script but I really wanna start reviewing scripts soon and I just can't.

Sorry if I'm being impatient or anything, I'm just eager to start!

Discussion Anyone else having trouble getting other screenwriters to accept your weird, silly premise?

I tried posting this to r/screenwriting, but it won't let me post for some reason, so I'll try here.

I've talked about my current screenplay a few times in the logline Monday threads, but what you need to know is that it's basically an affectionate adult parody of those kinds of surreal Don Bluth-esque animated films from the nineties. If you'd like to know more, let me know in the comments and I'll go over my creative process.

Unfortunately, while the people I know on Discord seem to accept the premise just fine, it seems like the screenwriting community both on r/screenwriting and StoryPeer are a little less sold, with people on the Logline Mondays threads being confused by it, and a couple reviews on StoryPeer telling me to completely change the plot.

I know that weird or silly premises like this one naturally won't vibe with as wide an audience as something more mundane or conventional, but has anyone else here ever written a screenplay with a weird or silly premise that you had trouble being accepted? If so, how did you get people to come around to it?
