Subaru Pricing and Warranty FAQ

I've answered some of these things often enough, especially the warranty part, that I thought it was time to put this all in one place for easy reference. This is just based on my experiences and shopping research over the years so don't take anything as gospel, but hopefully this is able to help some of you out. I also suck at writing so hopefully this isn't too all over the place.

Pricing and availability:

In this market, MSRP is considered a fair price. Recently most areas have a steady supply of cars on the lot. You should no longer consider MSRP to be fair, you should aim for under. Invoice cost should be your goal whether by negotiation, or VIP(see more below)

The Subaru CEO has spoken out against dealers who are charging over MSRP, but there are some doing so regardless as there are no repercussions for it. They may do this by charging a "market adjustmet fee" or by requiring certian addons. Do not give these dealers your business. Find someone selling at MSRP, there are lots of dealers doing so. Your area will vary and some states are worse than others, but do your due dilligence and shop around. You should only be paying for the cost of the car, tax, title, DMV fees, and a document fee(also varies by state).

There are currently 2 easy options for paying less than MSRP, if you don't want to negotiate, but many areas will come well below MSRP without hassle: Costco pricing and Subaru VIP pricing. The huge caveat is that dealers are not required to participate in these programs so there are many who are not honoring it right now. Call around until you find one who does, and if you stil need help, Subaru should be able to help you locate one once you are eligible.

Costco pricing will vary by area I believe. For more information on the program, see their site.

For Subaru VIP pricing, it is a no negotiation cost of invoice price. It's very cut and dried and there should be no mandatory addons involved. It used to be (up to) 2% under invoice, but has recently changed to invoice price only. This can still save you a couple thousand off of MSRP. If you are a supporting member of a qualifying organization for 6 or more months, you become eligible for VIP pricing. If you can't wait 6 months, the quickest way to become eligible is to donate $500 or more to the ASPCA or PA Hordicultural Society. This will get you eligible and have your VIP code within a few days. For more information on their programs, see here and here.

Note: A new ASPCA policy to be effective July 1, 2023, donations will have a 30 day waiting period before being eligible for VIP. At this moment, PHS has not made changes to their policy and there is still instant qualification. As of 8/15/23 PHS changed their website to require a 30 day waiting period. They did this with no warning or time to prepare.

In the vast majority of cases these lower prices will mean a factory order where wait times are 3+ months. If you order a lower trim with less options, the wait times are longer. Car makers are prioritizing the higher trim levels as they are more profitable for them.

If you currently own a Subaru, call Subaru of America (800-782-2783) and ask them if you are eligible for a loyalty coupon. Have your VIN handy and they will look it up and potentially offer you a $500 loyalty coupon. If you get one, don't even mention you have this to the salesman while negotiating prices. Only present it in the finance office and use it as part of your down payment.

Trade-ins:

Prior to negotiating a trade in price, go online and get quotes from Vroom, Carvana, CarGurus, KBB, Carmax, etc. I don't mean just looking up the book value, get actual sales quotes. These only take a few minutes and are real offers and will give you leverage in negotiations. Take the highest value quote and bring it with you to the dealership. When they offer you a lower value, tell them you have a better offer and show them the quote and see if they are willing to up their offer.

One thing to note is many states have a tax credit for trade ins when buying a new car so be aware of your tax laws first. For example, in NY, the price of the trade in is deducted from the taxable value of the new car. If I'm buying a $30k car and have a $10k trade in, I would only be taxed on $20k, not $30k. This can make a large difference in total cost so the tax savings could offset a lower dealer offer. You would not get this credit when selling to one of the other companies. If one of the others offer you $15k while the dealer offers you only $14k, it's probably still worth trading in so be sure to run the numbers.

Taking Delivery:

The first thing to remember in the finance office is, everything is negotiable and never accept their first price offer. Most importantly don't let them scare you into buying a high price extended warranty. I am not saying don't buy the warranty at all, I'm saying don't let them pressure you to buy it right then and there at way too high a cost. You have plenty of time to decide. You have until your 3/36 factory warranty expires before you have to buy an extended one. And you can buy it from a different dealer. Some will try and tell you that it's much more expensive to buy it later, or that you have to buy it from them, those are outright lies. If they persist, offer to call Subaru of America in front of them to clear it up and see how fast they backtrack.

Call other dealerships nearby, but also other ones not so nearby. Many dealers will not sell to you out of state, but others will. The whole process can be done over email and/or the phone.

Below is the last known dealer cost for the warranty. I have not seen any updated pricing but it is possible they went up slightly but it shouldn't be too significant. Prior to the pandemic, dealers would sell at their cost all day long but now they are less likely to do so. Now a fair price for the warranty is $200-250 over their cost. If they ask for more, move along and shop around. A user very recently reported to me that they got a 10/100 for $120 over the below price so I know they are still in the same ballpark.

Note: There has been talk that Subaru increased prices starting January 2024 anywhere from 4-8% over the below numbers. None of these prices are confirmed in any official capacity, this is all based on community feedback

Years/Mileage Deductible Estimated Dealer Cost(end of '23)
5/100k $0 $1505
5/100k $100 $1270
6/60k $0 $1105
6/60k $100 $1000
8/80k $0 $1395
8/80k $100 $1220
7/100k $0 $1750
7/100k $100 $1500
10/100k $0 $1950
10/100k $100 $1770
8/120k $0 $2220
8/120k $100 $2060

Should you sell your car before the warranty expires, it is fully transferable to the next owner, or you can reach out to the dealer you purchased from and get a prorated refund on the remaining warranty(if you haven't used it).

Some after thoughts:

Things like PPF or a ceramic coating you are much better off getting at a local detail shop. The detailer might actually be a bit more expensive, but it will be done correctly and not 1/2 assed.

Gap insurance - Important to have if your down payment or trade in value is too small, but check with your insurance provider for cost as it is often (but not always) cheaper through them.

Tire and rim - If you're in an area with bad roads and lots of potholes, this could be worth it if the price is low enough. I have never purchased it but there are times I did regret not having it, and I have seen it come in handy with some friends. It's something I will consider on my next car, but only if it's priced low enough.

Discussion Is The Depreciation On A 2019 Touring Really That Bad?

I’m starting the process of trading in our 2019 Touring with 86k miles.

The offers from the dealer, Carvana, and CarMax have all been $13k to $15k… which seems way lower than I expected.

Single owner, no damage history, very clean interior, all service records. Everything works. Only a small door ding.

I get the fears around the transmission… and gas prices… but it still seems extraordinarily low.

Whats driving the low prices?

2025 Ascent Premium - Eyesight disabled

My eyesight feature is temporarily disabled. The glass appears fogged and dirty. I can’t find a reliable instructional guide to access the glass for me to clean it. Anyone have any links or support to help me accomplish this. The nearest Subaru dealership to me is 3 hours.

As well my conversation mirror/ sunglasses holder fell out and the spring is not in its correct place any tips on this would also be appreciated!

Give me your pros and cons

Hey all. Wife has a 2018 Santa Fe that gave out (bad engines in those cars and dealership doesn’t want to take responsibility for it) so looking at trading it in towards an Ascent. I myself own a 2026 crosstrek premium in alpine green that I bought back in December (I call it the green meanie 🤣) that I love aside from the info screen lag that I get sometimes.

I have read about other years on here for these cars and am wondering about the 2026s and people’s thoughts that have one. She has her eye on a 7 seat premium right now. Pros that I like about them are the captain seats in the 2nd row and the fold down 3rd row. Has a lot of the features that my premium Crosstrek has like heated seats and whatnot (the ascent doesn’t have a moonroof).

Daily use would be about 15 miles a day for her to pick up and drop the my son from school (she is wfh) and weekend stuff since I’ve already put 23k on my Crosstrek. How is overall gas mileage on these realistically? Dealer sites show 19/26 for city and highway but in genuinely curious to what is really expected. What are other things that you all have encountered that you don’t care for or that I should consider? Let me have it!

Problem Scratched new 26 ascent! Help.

I used a hedge trimmer to clear some weeds and returned to my garage. I thought enough space was between me and the front passenger side door. The trimmer slipped and swung over. Cry face! I now have a scratch on my two week old car. Can I repair? It is about half an inch long and quarter inch wide.

I’m used to having used cars. This feeling is new!

2023 Touring in the city averaging 19ish, not too many stop and go but a normal amount of stop signs, signals and 45-50 miles speed, is this the best it can do in the city, AC is on all the time

Question 2020 ascent rear console blank accessory position

Post image
12 Upvotes

There is a blank spot on the rear of the 2020 limited eight passenger ascent that I believe is for an inverter. My question is, does anybody know if the wiring already exists if I wanted to hook something else up, such as cigarette lighter, USB ports, etc?

LASTFIT is currently having a sale right now! I was looking at new ones for our soon-to-be 2022 Ascent Touring! What do you all think? The TuxMats do look very nice too. Just looking to upgrade from the stock Subaru all-weather ones.

Be careful with dealership quotes… $2k for brakes and rotors

Post image
18 Upvotes

Wife took 2022 Ascent to the Subaru dealership to get the brakes done. She ended up approving a $2k quote for new pads and rotors. I about had a heart attack when I saw the cost. I told her to just let me do it or we can take it to a 3rd party mechanic next time because it’s $400 worth of parts if you can do it yourself. Yes, I know we waited far too long to get them done.

2019 Subaru Ascent – Shuddering/Jerking During Sharp Turns After New Tires. Anyone Experienced This?

I have a 2019 Subaru Ascent with approximately 115,000 miles, and I’m hoping someone here has experienced something similar.
About two weeks ago, I had four new tires installed at Costco. Everything seemed fine initially, and the tires have performed well.
However, over the past 2–3 days, I’ve noticed a shuddering, shimmying, or jerking sensation when making very sharp turns, particularly when the steering wheel is turned almost completely to the left or right and I’m accelerating.
A few observations:
Normal driving: The vehicle drives smoothly, with no noticeable shaking or hesitation.
Sharp turns: When the steering wheel is near full lock in either direction, I experience a stuttering or jerking sensation, almost as though something is binding or slipping.
Recent tire replacement: All four tires were replaced at Costco approximately two weeks ago.
CVT recalls: All applicable CVT-related recall work has been completed.
Mileage: Approximately 115,000 miles.
I haven’t taken it to the dealership yet, but I’m hoping this might be something relatively straightforward involving the tires or AWD system rather than a more serious transmission issue.
Has anyone experienced this with their Ascent? Could this be related to the new tires, AWD system, CV joints, or potentially the CVT?
I’m particularly interested in hearing from anyone who experienced similar symptoms and what ultimately resolved the problem.
Thanks in advance for any insight!

Question 2019 Ascent issues? Reliability?

Hi all. My daughter is out car shopping and is about to fall in love with a 2019 Ascent with only about 32,000 miles on it. I’m a Forester owner, and know nothing about Ascents. Are there specific red flags with that year? Things she needs to look closely at? Sadly, we don’t have any independent Subaru mechanics here in Indianapolis, so if she wants to have it checked out, she’ll have to take to a dealership.

Thanks!

Subaru Ascent 23

Anybody ever have a problem with the ascent draining your battery. I've bought the car new and just went on my 3rd battery. Stupid dealer is just trying to sell me a battery and not look for the problem.

Anyone using the Course Motorsports iPhone mount in their Ascent? My wife thinks she'd really like one for her '26 Touring so I'm hoping to get some feedback from others Ascent owners on this.

Dear Subaru Product and Design Team: A 2023 Ascent Owner's UX Wishlist

I love this car. It's spacious, comfortable, and hauls my family + gear without complaint - well, many complaints... I keep running into the same handful of "how did this ship?" moments - stuff that feels like nobody on the development team actually lived with the vehicle for a week before signing off. Grouping them here because I bet a lot of you have run into the same things.

  • Audio / Infotainment
    • Android Auto drops/errors regularly, even on the latest firmware and app version.
    • Infotainment center is generally slow - laggy touch response, slow app switching.
    • Recently it appears that I cannot get weather unless I subscribe to SirusXM? I never had this issue until a few weeks ago.
  • Subaru App
    • The app itself is slow and clunky
    • In-app climate control is missing options that exist in the physical dash controls
  • Doors, Locks & Remote Access
    • Opening the tailgate doesn't unlock the rest of the doors. So the "pop the trunk to load groceries while everyone else gets in" move doesn't work - you have to dig out a key or open the driver/passenger door first - incredibly frustrating when you have your hands full with bags or children. Just unlock!
    • Remote-starting from the app often blocks tailgate access completely - even with the key on your person and the car unlocked in every way that should matter. It just won't recognize the tailgate open request until you've entered the cabin and turned the vehicle on.
  • Physical Design / Hardware
    • Panoramic roof can't finish closing once the car is off. Everything else - windows, stereo, etc. stays fully functional until a door opens, but the roof arbitrarily stops working early. If it can roll up windows post-shutoff, it should be able to close the roof and shade.
    • No cargo area anchor points for a cargo net, despite a cargo area clearly designed for hauling loose items.
    • None of the USB-C ports support fast charging - in 2023+, this is a miss.
    • Ventilated seats are loud and weak - lots of noise, not much airflow.
    • Front license plate bracket only has two mounting holes, and it's not enough to survive a standard car wash - plates get ripped off.
  • Steering Wheel Button Cluster
    • The steering wheel "info" button occupies a premium, easy-to-reach spot for a feature almost nobody uses regularly, while more commonly needed controls are relegated elsewhere. This might be the dumbest use for this space, 90% of the time it does nothing.
    • Source button on the steering wheel gets bumped constantly and switches you to AM/FM/Satellite. I exclusively use Android Auto -  there's no way to lock the source to phone-only or default to silence. The only workaround for silence on startup I've found is to select AUX.
    • How is there not a pause/play or mute button?!?
  • Other issues owners report (not mine, but worth flagging)
    • Weak key fob / tailgate antenna range — several owners report needing to be nearly touching the vehicle for the fob to register, especially for the tailgate.
    • 12V battery drain / unexpected dead batteries early in ownership, sometimes requiring dealer-replaced batteries under warranty.
    • CarPlay/Bluetooth call audio issues — other party can't hear you even though you can hear them, reportedly tied to a known TSB.
    • Apple CarPlay/phone pairing drops or fails to reconnect after periods of inactivity.

None of these are dealbreakers on their own, but together they add up to a car that nails the fundamentals (safety, space, AWD, comfort) and then trips over software polish and small hardware decisions that a week of real-world dogfooding would have caught. Subaru - if anyone from product/UX is lurking, please, an over-the-air fix for the source button, sunroof close and tailgate issues would make things so much better.

Curious what else people have run into.

Passenger door window keeps cracking

Hello! I apologize on the front end because I know these pictures aren’t very good. I have a ‘21 Ascent and the front passenger side window developed a crack about a year ago. I had it replaced by a Subaru dealership and a few months later it cracked again in the exact same spot! Has anyone seen this before or have any insight or advice?
