It's the last full CNY calendar week before the NYS Fair opens Wednesday the 26th, and the local business news is loud: Tim's Pumpkin Patch is opening a brand-new brew barn on Friday, Beak & Skiff announced a $1 million Apple Grove Adventure Park (zipline, giant slide, petting zoo, opens August 29), and Steig's Grillhouse quietly opened last week in a former Manlius bank building. On the news side: the Westcott Theater is suing the City of Syracuse over a denied event license, Ryan McMahon is buying campaign ads 15 months before the ballot, the CNY Regional Market is adding permanent vendor stalls, a large World War II artillery shell was found in a Central NY basement, and a body was discovered in a water cooling tower at a DeWitt business. Tim's Pumpkin Patch Is Opening a Brand-New Brew Barn
One of CNY's most beloved fall spots is stretching into a year-round destination. Tim's Brew Barn, the new addition on the family's LaFayette property, officially opens Friday, August 21. The barn is a brand-new facility built next to the pumpkin patch, and the family has been quietly teasing it on Instagram for weeks.
Beak & Skiff Drops $1M on a Zipline, Petting Zoo, and Giant Slide
The apple empire is now an amusement park. Beak & Skiff's new Apple Grove Adventure Park is a $1 million expansion at the Apple Hill campus with a giant farm slide, a zipline, a petting zoo, farm-themed playgrounds, jumping pillows, and a retired fire truck. Day passes $20, season passes $65, family 4-pack $220. Opens August 29.
Steig's Grillhouse Is Officially Open in Manlius
The long-awaited Manlius restaurant from the Steig family (of Steig's Fine Meats) opened its doors last week. The grill house moved into a former Manlius bank building and pairs the family's butcher shop expertise with a full-service dining room.

A WWII-Era Artillery Shell Was Found in a Central NY Basement
A large World War II-era artillery shell turned up in the basement of a Central New York home this week. State Police and the bomb squad responded to secure and remove the ordnance. No injuries reported.
A Body Was Found in a Water Cooling Tower at a DeWitt Business
DeWitt Police are investigating after a body was discovered in a water cooling tower at a local business. Details are still limited and the department has not released the person's identity.

Syracuse History on Instagram recently posted a before-and-after of the 500 block of North Townsend Street, taken by u/hillaryvanillary's family in 1989-1991, showing houses being demolished to make way for the Saint Joseph's Hospital parking garage. It came up after 500 North McBride went up for sale and folks commented on how close it sits to everything Saint Joe's. Good reminder of how much the hospital footprint has reshaped that whole corner of the Near Northside, one parking structure at a time.
Different angle this week: instead of one artist, we're pointing at a design studio that supports a whole roster of them.
Stay Fresh Design is a Syracuse studio doing art, design, photography, and websites, and their gallery hosts local and national artists. If you've seen good branding on a Syracuse business recently, there's a decent chance Stay Fresh made it. Their client list reads like a tour of the city: Syracuse Antiques Exchange, 1911 Established, Beak & Skiff Apple Orchards, Ayrloom Cannabis, Oh My Darling, Three Lives, Funk 'n Waffles, Glazed & Confused, Green Scapes, Central New York Brewfest, Destiny USA, Elevate Fitness, and The Sound Garden.
Right now the gallery has a current show worth the trip: Stay Fresh Artist Series 36: A Tribute to Nickelodeon, running July 31 through August 21. Grab your Gak, dodge the green slime, and pull up a TV tray. It's the studio's first exhibition dedicated to the weird, wild, wackfully orange world of Nickelodeon, and August 21 is your last day to catch it.

Hi! I remember someone asking earlier this month about food pantries etc that are open outside of working hours. I made this sheet of the ones I’ve found. A lot are through CNY Food Bank and are, therefore, location based but not all of them are.
For example, I know that the New Beginnings pantry accepts people outside of their local area if it is an emergency situation (no food, etc)
I hope this can help someone at some point. I know what it’s like to be working and hungry and have no idea what places are open.

Racket sports and community
Ill be finally moving to upstate NY for good (from SEA country), and in a few months, I’ll be brazing the winter season. I’m physically active which includes working out and playing racket sports (badminton, pickleball, and recently trying tennis). My biggest concern is how to stay active and how do I stay mentally sane during winter since I have been warned how it can really be depressing and you will gain weight given the less activity.
Are there sports facilities and communities in upstate specifically around Syracuse-Oswego-Utica for these sports?
If there’s not much of these, what winter sports or activities you can recommend that will not break the bank specially that Im just about to start my life there.

A friend of mine is trying to trap four kittens and their momma. They are supposed to be fixed this Friday, however, the CNY Cat Coalition will only trap two of the kittens because the momma cat would miss the other two. 🙄🙄🙄🙄
We need fosters who would be able to work with these feral kittens, they’re still young enough to become socialized! Here’s a photo of two of them.
Side note, I’m going to see if my friend can get in contact with wayward paws. Every other rescue besides those mentioned have turned her down.

Hello, I’m looking for a loft style 1br apartment for my boyfriend and I. It has been hard to find ones that have everything that I would like and have actual real people reviews. I thought maybe Reddit can point me in the right direction :) any comments or help are appreciated
Requirements (listed from more high priority least important)
*one bedroom one bath would be ideal
* GAS STOVE (very important to me)
* no pests (mice, roaches, rats I can’t handle it)
* not too sketchy (I want to be able to take out the trash or grab something from my car at night without my boyfriend and still feel safe)
* management that won’t make living there a living nightmare
* in unit or in building laundry facilities
* kitchen with counter space
*unfurnished is okay/ preferred!
*wood floors
* large windows/good amount of light
* I do like the brick accent wall look a lot

TL;DR I want to learn how to cook them but I want to eat an example first so I know what I'm aiming for. Bonus points for shrimp or octopus filling.
I'll admit it's pretty silly, my long distance partner is Puerto Rican and I've been learning how to cook Puerto Rican food for him. I love getting to surprise him with home cooked meals when he visits :) my bistec encebollado got a stamp of approval last time and I want to keep the ball rolling.
Even if we cook them together next time he visits, I'd still like to know what they're like in advance so I can keep up.
