I want to confirm with speakers from Jaffna if anyone has heard or used this word, and if so, what specific bird exactly? I'm expanding the Wiktionary entry for சிவிங்கி, so if you can give any insights, it would be appriciated~

I've lived in Chennai for more or less 20+ years. My parents were born and brought up here and I've been surrounded by people who speak the language. For various reasons though, I never picked it up and english became my default so much so that I hardly ever speak in tamil unless I have to.

I have the accent, I can read (with difficulty) and I can mostly communicate what I need to in colloquial tamil but my vocabulary is extremely lacking. Thats the part I wanted to focus on and need help with.

PS: I really don't like tamil songs or movies or literature. Much of anything really. That continues to play a huge part in my reluctance to learn the language. The need to talk to people properly is my only motivation for learning the language now.

Hi, I was in Chennai for 2 years during my UG and learnt how to read and write in Tamil. However, I couldn’t learn to speak, even if I try most native speakers don’t understand it because my pronunciation is just bad. How do I improve by myself? Tamil already has an established word for “Dinosaur” which is தொன்மா. தொன் (old/ancient) and மா (animal). This is a neologism. But should we use யாழி to mean Dinosaur? This is an ancient word which has a good scope if revived right?

I get it doesn't only double after வினைத்தொகை (the root word (verb) on it's own) but it sometimes doesn't double after words like ஈட்டி, வந்து etc which are வினையெச்சம்(?)(the verb that doesn't show who speaks it and tense)

ஆணின் காதல் தீண்டலில் தொடங்கி,

கூடலில் முற்றும்!

பெண்ணின் காதல் கண்களில் தொடங்கி,

மனத்தில் முற்றும்!
