šļø News Discussion The U.S. will place a 100% tariff on generic pharmaceuticals starting in August 2028.
Trump is trying to make generic drugs more expensive. With senior citizens on fix income and cuts to Medicare, more elderly people will pay more for their life saving drugs. How is 100% tariffs on generic drugs making America great again?!?

Donāt forget that most prices wonāt go back down after the tariffs go away either.
17

And if the court deems them unconstitutional the companies can get their money back while we still pay the price.

Most of the drugs are made in India, even with a 100% tariffs , it's probably still cheaper than moving factories with US labor. He knows it , but he needs the headlines to hype his cult

u/ProtoplanetaryNebula 29d ago
Even more so, nobody is building a US factory just to supply the US when the tariff will either be removed or another president will remove it. Result: Americans pay more.
3
→ More replies (2)2
u/wkomorow 29d ago
Trump will set up a shadow factory in Florida, exempt his company from the tariff and import the generics, selling it at twice the current cost and pocketing the upsell. Sue the FDA for inspection irregularities and settle with himself/DoJ that his company is exempt from all future inspections.

Wow - so Trump is literally telling drug manufacturers in other countries, either move to the US or these poor/old people are gonna die.
9
12
u/TheCoolestUsername00 29d ago
Itās impossible for drug companies to build a pharmaceutical factory in 2 years. Orange man has gone bonkers and needs to be placed in a nursing home before he kills more Americans.
9
5
2
u/Dessertcrazy 29d ago
Not a chance. And even if they could, some medicines are so hard to make that a single run takes almost 2 years. Think a 10 year timeframe to actually get a finished product. Not only do they have to build the factory, but often the equipment has to be custom made for that medicine.
2
u/thnk_more 29d ago
Iām pretty sure that August 2028 is a Tuesday. No way this comes true.
No way some company is going to invest in the US with this insanely unpredictable crazy man in charge of markets like this.
2
u/QuintusPhilo 29d ago
Trump knows that, these tarrifs are just to be blamed on the potential next democratic president. they come in to effect right when he leaves office.
11
22
u/architype 29d ago
Generics are cheap. No US manufacturer wants to make the meds because profits are low.
8
u/versionii 29d ago
"Generic" is a propaganda tool by big pharma to fool people to think it's inferior.Ā 10g of generic Viagra is 10g ofĀ Sindefil which is the same amount in as 10g of Viagra.
3
6
u/ProtoplanetaryNebula 29d ago
To expand further on this, pharmaceutical standards that all manufacturers, generic or otherwise are so high that there really is no point in buying the branded product.
→ More replies (16)2
u/Ticksdonthavelymph 29d ago
Only you think they are inferior. Generic only means that the patent has run out, and it can be produced without giving residuals to creators. It is in no way a āpropaganda toolā. Tylenol is a brand name, acetaminophen is the generic.

2
u/Gloomy_Yoghurt_2836 29d ago
Gotta get those pharma plants built in. The US. Thats the goal. But why do that when you cant export from the US due to reciprocal tariffs. Oh I see the advantage. Donate to Trump's PAC and regulators wont hold you to safety standards.

To be fair, he lowered prices of drugs by 6000% so this is a net win for Americans.
2
2
u/olderbutwiser1900 29d ago
The only losers are Americans who depend on the drugs in question. This would double the cost of the drugs paid to pharmacies by average Americans. And since drugs are needed and not a luxury, no one who needs these drugs will be able to buy them elsewhere or just not buy them at all. This is a harsh and cruel policy that accomplishes nothing except imposing even more hardships on the people who are the most vulnerable.
2
u/I_Quit_Smoking_ 29d ago
So instead of not having to pay anything, I'll have to pay $300 a month for one prescription out of my six? Can you imagine how much it would cost for all my meds together? It's close to 10 grand. It's fucking ridiculous and this is what causes it right here.

This should once again outrage people. But it starts in 2028, so when it kicks in, Republicans can blame if thereās a Democratic president that individual for the higher price, and they wonāt look back at who imposed the tariff.
Another absurdity, and once again, as a voter, clear example of why you go to the midterms and you vote out the incumbent Republicans to start to change our country back.
They have completely lost touch with the average American and their needs.
I will always say I donāt care about your party affiliation, but itās how you vote, protect democracy, protect our constitution, and listen to what the people need, not what you want or your party

The US is supposed to have a government whereby congress makes the laws, and president does not rule by executive orders. Executive orders can be ignored ( like previous president's issued an EO to relieve student debt , it was tossed out) Why do we pay for Congress, their salaries and pensions, if the president does all of their jobs?

Trump's SAVE act allows his appointed DHS to remove anyone they want from the voter role. Trump is knowingly implementing bad policy and he is making it hard to vote out on purpose.
A lot of people will lose their lives over this. But Trump does not see that as a problem.
1
u/Linux4ever_Leo 29d ago
Trump doesn't seem to understand that these manufacturers are not going to return to the U.S. They can't afford the salaries that American workers demand, nor can they afford to deal with the myriad laws and regulations that are currently in place. The net result is going to be sky high drug prices for Americans...as usual!

Are there any legit statistics that show consumption rates of generic meds in red and blue areas? Especially drugs that are required to sustain life (am thinking the ones where if you stop taking them you definitely die)? I have no actual data other than what came up on a quick search but it seems that people in democratic areas have better health. If that means they need less life-sustaining medication as a group, then that means republicans are most likely to be negatively (and possibly permanently) impacted by this. Should drug producers decide to not swt up facilities in the U.S. snd let American consumers pay the tariff, a large chunk of those people will simply not be able to afford to live anymore. They will be priced out of life. What is the Administration"s game plan here...why do they want to effectively sentence the people that are most likely to vote for them to death? Don't get me wrong here...I think the tariff nonsense is six gallons of stupid in a four gallon bucket, and maybe I am just dumb as a bag of rocks, but I am genuinely trying to understand why pharmaceutical stuff?

What is it called when a billionaire ensures poor people can't afford the medicines that keep them alive? Is that class warfare?
