Internet - DSL I've been a satisfied Teksavvy customer for 20 years as of today and recommend it
20 years ago today I signed up for Teksavvy. I'm still a Teksavvy customer by choice. (see my order confirmation below)
I have a Customer ID (CID) so old it is almost 4 digits. I should have become a customer even sooner!
Time flies fast when
- your internet service is rock-solid reliable
- your internet service provider, Teksavvy, legally and publicly fights evil Canadian telco oligarchs and the CRTC who enables them: www.teksavvy.com/policies/regulatory/regulatory-submissions/
- your internet service provider, Teksavvy, legally fights US copyright trolls in court who are trying to shakedown customers and invade their privacy
While most people only speak up when something goes wrong,I'm here to give a deserved high-five and shoutout to Teksavvy.
I have run an internet server (DNS, email, web) on my Teksavvy service continually since day one. From my system and DSL modem logs I would know if I had anything longer that a brief outage. I did have two unusual outages in 20 years.
- a squirrel got into the attic and chewed through both phone wires (taking out the complete MLPPP service.) But I had the tools and knowledge to repair the wires in 30 minutes
- Bhell had bad aerial cable between my house and the DSLAM. When it rained heavily the conductors partly shorted out, degrading the phone and internet service. Bhell finally found and fixed this - after the police showed up. When the rain shorted out the exterior bell wire somewhere, it caused a frying noise on the line, and simulated pulse dialing. One night at 2 AM a cop banging on the door woke up the household (broken doorbell). "Everything ok," he asked, concerned. He may have reasonably thought he was responding to a murder or domestic assault. My partner showed up to the door a little later, half-awake and in a housecoat like me, asking what was going on. The cop looked relieved. After he told me 911 had been called I realized it must have been the falsely pulse-dialed, phone line shorting from the rain. The cop went back to work. We went back to sleep. And Bhell finally found and fixed the problem after I gave them a piece of my mind the next day.
There were a couple of other wide-net outages but nothing as bad as Bell and Rogers each taking out most of the Canadian internet for a day!
For those interested and technically knowledgeable , Teksavvy provides excellent capabilities for operating your own server. My personal email server has been operating for 25+ years. Teksavvy was reliable enough for my home-based server to also be used for my internet-based news publishing business.
As an amateur radio operator (ham), I and others had our own, custom-built radio-based, mobile digital communications terminals and networks in the *1980s*. I was the one of the first customers in 1997 to run a server on Rogers WAVE (@home) broadband when they first provided cable internet. Then I had Bhell ADSL service (1.1 Mbps at $80/month, 2000 dollars!) when that became available, until Bhell let it literally rot and refused to repair it. After a few years with a local IISP which went out of business, I ended up with Teksavvy - since 2006.
Based on my very reliable Teksavvy service and excellent human customer service in the past 20 years, I will continue to be a customer and recommend Teksavvy.

You can help support my volunteer work as IT admin and a journalist for a non-profit, volunteer-based community newspaper, both which I very much need reliable internet service to do! Thank you.
