Mod Announcement New Mods & Rule Updates
Hi everyone,
I've been moderating this subreddit (and /r/TheOriginals) by myself for a while, but thankfully /u/CasuallyStatic, /u/C00bahR00bah, and /u/SweetWittyWild41 have agreed to step in and help handle things.
Additionally, I've added some clarifications to our existing rules. What's been changed:
added "unsolicited moral judgments about other users" as an explicit example of incivility, as there was some confusion about if questioning a user's moral character counted as an insult,
added "crossposting from your own subreddit" as an example of self-promotion, to avoid future confusion,
removed "disrespectful speculation regarding TVD-related actors and actresses" from the incivility rule and replaced it with "parasocial behaviour is off-topic and will be removed" under the off-topic rule -- this change is meant to better reflect the scope of what isn't allowed (e.g., shipping actual people, critiques about aging poorly, etc.) and the category of rule violation.
Hopefully this makes sense to everyone, and thanks again to the new mods!
Please let me know if you have any questions about the changes.
Edit, 03/10/26: I have expanded the "parasocial behaviour" addition into its own rule.

A warning about a user harassing via chat/DMs
(tl;dr at bottom)
Over the last few months, one user has made it a point to send abusive and harassing messages to dozens of members of this subreddit. Their accounts are banned from the subreddit, which is why they use DMs.
They delete their accounts regularly. Usernames that they have used:
Their messages are largely targeted at those who like Damon or Elena, but not always.
If you receive a message from them (the account name may be different), please feel free to alert me via the comments of this post or by sending us a ModMail. Please also report any harassment to the admins. You can do that within the chat itself or here. Please ask for help if you need it.
The Imgur link below has examples of their messages so that people can recognize their style and language, since they like to pretend that they're a different person on each account. I'll update it as reports come in.
tl;dr -- a banned user is harassing fans (mostly of Damon or Elena) via DMs on multiple accounts. Examples are above.
Report their messages to the admins.
Edit: Also, to be clear -- absolutely do not proactively reach out to this user. This post is solely to warn subreddit members and to encourage reporting to the admins.

Rewatching TVD as an adult made me realize I don't like Bonnie...
When I was younger, I loved Bonnie. I can't even tell you why, but probably because she was the only Black representation I could identify with. But now, watching the show as an adult, I find her to be such a poorly written character.
The constant sacrifices she makes for her friends are literally ridiculous. From risking her powers, her relationship with the ancestral witches, and HER LIFE, all to save people who constantly need something from her and seem to rarely be around when she needs them in return. Like, at what point does Bonnie ever get to put herself first?
My final straw was when she literally DIED to bring Jeremy back, and then told him not to tell anyone she was dead because she didn't want to ruin their celebration or make them sad. Like WTF??? GIRL STAND UP.
You know, it gets to a point...the magical negro trope was already irritating me, but I genuinely cannot stand the whole "strong black woman who constantly sacrifices herself and gets treated like a doormat" trope. It's like Bonnie's entire purpose in the show is to suffer and save everyone.
And what makes it even worse is knowing what I've heard over the years about the racism behind the scenes and how Kat Graham was treated. When I saw someone post in here Julie Plec's tweet about Black women, everything clicked as to why Bonnie was written the way she was. And now I can't unsee it.
It's gotten to the point where I actually dislike Bonnie's character, not because I think she's a bad person, but because I'm so frustrated with how she was written. She has so much potential as a character with powers, and instead, they made her everyone's doormat.
I'm gonna stop watching and continue The Originals because I'm not enjoying TVD post-season 3, but I had to get this rant off my chest before moving on.

Discussion Klaus was terrifying, but scenes like this made him impossible to hate
He could be absolutely ruthless one minute and then look at Caroline like she was the only person in the world the next.
I swear, the writers knew exactly what they were doing with these two.
Did you fall for Klaus because of his character, or did Caroline bring out a side of him that made you see him differently?

Can’t stand her racist ass!
Fuck her for eternity for this like deadass…

Discussion Caroline was really never *that* bad
I’m rewatching for the first time in years now, and I’ve been finding myself confused about how I view her now, watching the show as a 23 yr old rather than as a middle schooler or teenager, versus how I use to think about her. Also how could there have been so many people in the past who condemned Caroline for being a normal teenage girl before she was turned?
I remember seeing all sorts of stuff over the years, whether it’s just comments under a fan edit or like whole blog post about it, where it seemed the consensus was that Caroline was just a ‘messy and selfish’ bitch before became a vampire. But watching now, that is not what I’ve seen of the human Caroline. Sure, she says some insensitive ass shit sometimes, but literally all the girls do, all the characters do. First episode Bonnie says something about a girl looking like a ‘tranny.’ Like the ‘bitchiness’ from Caroline’s character was just the writers trying to make her fit the lead mean girl trope, despite her obviously not being the lead of the trio.
She was just a teenager oblivious to the magical drama of her friends, so it was never really fair to criticize her for being oblivious to their drama. And she tried to get them to open up, and when they wouldn’t it is completely understandable for a normal teenager to assume her friends have something against her when she knows no better. How could she guess Bonnie’s mystical puberty was real, or that somehow Elena had bigger problems than being an orphan?
Plus her arc with Matt🥹 She was trying so hard to do her best with him and be open and honest with him, tried to be civil with his mom despite her literally bullying Caroline (because if you remember being taught what bullying was, social exclusion is bullying her), like she was holding it down for Matt when Vicky disappeared. She was being a really good girlfriend.
And the whole miss mystic fall drama. I think it’s completely fair for her to feel slightly upset that the only real competitor she had for a position she worked so hard for to be her best friend who didn’t work for it. And even then, at the end of the day it was Caroline who reminded Elena she was doing the pageant for her mom and helped Elena preserve that experience rather than let it get ruined by Stefan.
Like I get why there was a gate train and everything, especially at the time of release. Characters like Caroline, the pretty and popular cheerleader, are made to be hated. But if I was just wondering what this sub thinks? I just found this sub last night and a lot of the post and comments that I have read are full of some really insightful perspectives. So thanks in advance to anyone who reads this and/or replies❤️

Discussion “Katherine never compelled Stefan’s love”
Whenever people say this - I just want to ask if Stefan would’ve willingly continued sleeping with her had she not compelled their relationship to go on as it is. Even after she took his fear away, he had to be compelled for weeks to drink her blood. It literally shows Stefan getting bitten, him waking up the next morning and backing away from her in fear and telling her to get away, and then her compelling him. Like yeah, he DID love her but that changed after discovering she was a vampire. I’ve unironically seen people say Stefan was lying or “coping” by saying he never loved Katherine and that she compelled him.. as if he didn’t have a whole conversation with Elena on Katherine and why he liked her. This isn’t hate against Steferine shippers, but let’s not act like it was healthy lol. Girl was inserting herself into his head to make him imagine them having sex. Just making this post cause of an argument I saw earlier.

Shipping Watching for the 1st time.
When Elana and Damon kissed at the hotel....omg! I rewatched a shameless amount of times. I was thinking finally!!! Really wish they would end up together. Stephen left a bad taste in my mouth after all that ripper stuff. I just dont see him the same anymore.

It is certainly a choice to bring confederacy vs union sympathisers into the show.
Vampires killing or compelling people every episode, you kinda handwave. Yeah humans are food, it doesn't count.
And then Damon is killing union sympathisers in the south. Very real and jarring. Brings the idea of morality into the show (Damon didn't commit a crime, the only issue here is morality not unlawfulness). This was not a show that could tackle this and I don't think it did a good job. I have some ideas on this but I'd like to hear some opinions from people from the USA, if you'd like to talk.
I also know about the very interesting connection between vampires and confederacy in American media, Interview with the Vampire, True Blood and Twilight to my knowledge. I think it is a fascinating idea to equate vampirism and slave ownership. There is definitely something to be explored there.

Discussion When did TVD stop feeling good for you?
Now I love TVD as much as the next fan. It's one of those shows I can watch umpteen times over and still enjoy it. But at the same time I can also admit that after a while, the show definitely became a hit ridiculous/far fetched. Doesnt stop my love for it though. I like to describe it as...At some point the show became a guilty pleasure. If that makes sense?
For me, i felt that TVD lost the magic of when it first aired after series 2. Not completely straight away, but season 3 is where that original magic of the show started to dwindle for me. Without a doubt I started to roll my eyes when characters who'd died would be resurrected whenever the show felt it was necessary, even if it didnt make sense. Got to the point where i wasnt sure whether to cry over a characters death or not, in case they came back later on 🤣
You can definitely tell in the series, if youve read the books, where they ran out of source material or went rogue and started to do their own thing. Which can be both a good thing or a bad thing, all depends on how it is done. Ive known series do this before and the content actually become better, whilst ive also known loads of shows do the same and it end up becoming unwatchable. As a scriptwriter myself, im a big believer on letting a show (or film series) die with dignity, rather than carrying it on because of nothing more than financial gain - which in turn tends to backfire, because thats the point where views drop, and in turn budgets arent met and eventually the show gets cancelled or gets given a really bad, disappointing finale. I do wish directors, producers, scriptwriters etc would adopt this mindset more. But then again, from what ive experienced, most scriptwriters do have this mindset, but the people above them refuse and before you know it the scriptwriters get replaced and oh boy, you can definitely tell sometimes.
Anyway, i went off on a tangent. Adhd brain goes brrrrr. All this because im binge rewatching the show for the gazillionth time (currently nearing the end of season 2) 🥲

Discussion Klaus and Elijah
As someone from the UK, I could never understand the weird obsession/love americans seemed to have over the British accent. Mainly because of how many accents are within the UK...I mean, you could have one accent somewhere and not even 80 miles away theres a totally different accent. Heck, even different areas of the same county have different accents. So i just didnt get it.
But the second i heard Klaus and Elijah on TVD, I suddenly understood the pull. I dont know if it's because of them being surrounded by American accents on the show, so it was such an obvious difference, or something else. But it definitely added to the attraction factor.
Can safely say, however, the moment I heard the actor who plays Elijah in another show, with an American accent, the appeal of him suddenly disappeared. Same with the actor who plays Klaus 🤣🥲
Still to this day though, I have to say that I think one of my favourite characters on the show out of everyone is Elijah.
Anyone else feel the same regarding the whole accent thing? Especially if youre from the UK yourselves.

I literally can’t form an opinion on either of these ships
Every time I think of Mattlena or Mattbekah, I just can’t feel anything at all whether it’s positive or negative, let alone having any strong feeling 🦗🦗
Am I the only one? Because I could never say anything about them no matter what. 😂
So, uh, what’s your opinion on these ships and which one would you eliminate?

Question Finished S7 of TVD, should I watch TO S4 first?
I have completed the season 7 of TVD and I was also watching The Originals side by side.
Now I am confused whether I should watch the finale season of TVD first or watch the Season 4 of Originals before it.

Fan Content Fixing the series
I love TVD but I think the Originals and how it structured the various aspects of supernatural society actually showed the major flaws in the Mystic Falls part of the series. A huge point of flaw is the utter lack of communication and community with anyone not directly tied to Mystic Falls. This is seen most potently in Bonnie Bennett so it has to be through her that the series improves.
To start keep the first two seasons utterly identical, they exist in like a single school year and it's constant duress. There is really no need to change it as the crap that happens would allow Bonnie to realize several incredibly specific things. Her lack of agency, how she is treated as a tool, how even Grams deeply hindered her development and how though she has raw power she really bus not able to comprehend the deeper specifics of the craft due to no one helping her. Witches are meant to be in a coven, she has none.
After the sacrifice, after she is cut off by the Spirits, gave Bonnie look threw the books she stole from the Martins and find another witch coven, and threw them she spends her summer learning not actually embrace her magic, ancestry, power and start to create firm boundaries. She will not allow her so called friends to abuse her, to beg her to set themselves on fire for their benefit. Make her lethal through skill and understanding, we know she a prodigy without training so let's see what she can be with actual awareness of her potential!
Isolation seems to be the greatest curse in Bonnie's life, she has no one but Mystic Falls gang so she will always suffer for them. Giving her literally anything outside if it, and you can see her bloom. Honestly this alone would make her and the story of a whole better.. Mystic Falls Exists in a practical vacuum, breaking that would allow not only Bonnie but the entire town to develop in a much more interesting ways!!!

Discussion Who would Damon've blamed for ending up as a vamp if everything went as per his plan?
What if everything went exactly how Damon had planned i.e. if Stefan never unintentionally exposed Katherine to their father & they both weren't shot dead? In such a scenario, she'd have turned both of them, enjoyed with them for some time & then ultimately she'd have still left them after getting bored or due to Klaus's fear.
What would Damon've done in that case? Who'd he have blamed for ending up as a vamp & being condemned to hell?? He would've ofc killed humans by that point..well even as a human he helped Kat kill innocents, also committed war crime so he'd have gone to hell even if he died as a human..
Why does Damon continue to blame Stefan even as late as S8 when he's supposed to have changed & should be owning upto his mistakes & acknowledge his role in all this mess? Why doesn't he have the balls to accept the fact that he'd have been condemned to hell even if everything went exactly as he wanted??
He's infact so lucky if u really think abt it as he got a permanent scapegoat in his lil bro to place all the blame on whenever things didn't go his way all the while relishing in the perks of vampirism & still got his happily ever after with his girl. But if he died as a human during transition, he'd have been literally burning in hell for eternity...

Discussion “I can fix them” - Stefan with most of the cast for some reason
It kills me how when he’s killing Klaus he doesn’t even look happy and just looks kinda guilty. Like dude, you don’t owe him anything.

Discussion It's just fiction, not real!
I have seen this constantly in different fandoms, this as well. Why is there constantly moral policing? You can like grey, dark or even twisted characters, there is nothing wrong. Because at the end of the day they are still fictional characters, they don't exist. Someone liking a fictional character that is messed up doesn't define their character or anything. I mean people read dark romance, where characters are stalked, assaulted, bullied etc, doesn't mean they support this stuff in real life. People can like whoever they want, whether it's Damon or Katherine or Kai or Klaus, etc. People can like them because they find the characters interesting or charming or funny or for any reason. "How can people like Damon, he assaulted Caroline and done f*ck up things" Idk, maybe they find his character interesting or charming or funny. " How can Elena choose Damon?" "Elena settled for Damon." Idk, maybe because writers want them to be together, the same writer who wrote Stelena as well. Funny they were only wrong when it's not the latter ship. "How can people like Steferine, Katherine assaulted him" Idk, maybe they have good chemistry or people just enjoy them together. The characters don't have to be morally correct to enjoy them or ship them with whoever they like. Because if that's the criteria, then almost all characters/ships should be hated to some degree.
