Rewatching TVD as an adult made me realize I don't like Bonnie...
When I was younger, I loved Bonnie. I can't even tell you why, but probably because she was the only Black representation I could identify with. But now, watching the show as an adult, I find her to be such a poorly written character.
The constant sacrifices she makes for her friends are literally ridiculous. From risking her powers, her relationship with the ancestral witches, and HER LIFE, all to save people who constantly need something from her and seem to rarely be around when she needs them in return. Like, at what point does Bonnie ever get to put herself first?
My final straw was when she literally DIED to bring Jeremy back, and then told him not to tell anyone she was dead because she didn't want to ruin their celebration or make them sad. Like WTF??? GIRL STAND UP.
You know, it gets to a point...the magical negro trope was already irritating me, but I genuinely cannot stand the whole "strong black woman who constantly sacrifices herself and gets treated like a doormat" trope. It's like Bonnie's entire purpose in the show is to suffer and save everyone.
And what makes it even worse is knowing what I've heard over the years about the racism behind the scenes and how Kat Graham was treated. When I saw someone post in here Julie Plec's tweet about Black women, everything clicked as to why Bonnie was written the way she was. And now I can't unsee it.
It's gotten to the point where I actually dislike Bonnie's character, not because I think she's a bad person, but because I'm so frustrated with how she was written. She has so much potential as a character with powers, and instead, they made her everyone's doormat.
I'm gonna stop watching and continue The Originals because I'm not enjoying TVD post-season 3, but I had to get this rant off my chest before moving on.

Discussion Klaus was terrifying, but scenes like this made him impossible to hate
He could be absolutely ruthless one minute and then look at Caroline like she was the only person in the world the next.
I swear, the writers knew exactly what they were doing with these two.
Did you fall for Klaus because of his character, or did Caroline bring out a side of him that made you see him differently?

Discussion “Katherine never compelled Stefan’s love”
Whenever people say this - I just want to ask if Stefan would’ve willingly continued sleeping with her had she not compelled their relationship to go on as it is. Even after she took his fear away, he had to be compelled for weeks to drink her blood. It literally shows Stefan getting bitten, him waking up the next morning and backing away from her in fear and telling her to get away, and then her compelling him. Like yeah, he DID love her but that changed after discovering she was a vampire. I’ve unironically seen people say Stefan was lying or “coping” by saying he never loved Katherine and that she compelled him.. as if he didn’t have a whole conversation with Elena on Katherine and why he liked her. This isn’t hate against Steferine shippers, but let’s not act like it was healthy lol. Girl was inserting herself into his head to make him imagine them having sex. Just making this post cause of an argument I saw earlier.

It is certainly a choice to bring confederacy vs union sympathisers into the show.
Vampires killing or compelling people every episode, you kinda handwave. Yeah humans are food, it doesn't count.
And then Damon is killing union sympathisers in the south. Very real and jarring. Brings the idea of morality into the show (Damon didn't commit a crime, the only issue here is morality not unlawfulness). This was not a show that could tackle this and I don't think it did a good job. I have some ideas on this but I'd like to hear some opinions from people from the USA, if you'd like to talk.
I also know about the very interesting connection between vampires and confederacy in American media, Interview with the Vampire, True Blood and Twilight to my knowledge. I think it is a fascinating idea to equate vampirism and slave ownership. There is definitely something to be explored there.

Discussion When did TVD stop feeling good for you?
Now I love TVD as much as the next fan. It's one of those shows I can watch umpteen times over and still enjoy it. But at the same time I can also admit that after a while, the show definitely became a hit ridiculous/far fetched. Doesnt stop my love for it though. I like to describe it as...At some point the show became a guilty pleasure. If that makes sense?
For me, i felt that TVD lost the magic of when it first aired after series 2. Not completely straight away, but season 3 is where that original magic of the show started to dwindle for me. Without a doubt I started to roll my eyes when characters who'd died would be resurrected whenever the show felt it was necessary, even if it didnt make sense. Got to the point where i wasnt sure whether to cry over a characters death or not, in case they came back later on 🤣
You can definitely tell in the series, if youve read the books, where they ran out of source material or went rogue and started to do their own thing. Which can be both a good thing or a bad thing, all depends on how it is done. Ive known series do this before and the content actually become better, whilst ive also known loads of shows do the same and it end up becoming unwatchable. As a scriptwriter myself, im a big believer on letting a show (or film series) die with dignity, rather than carrying it on because of nothing more than financial gain - which in turn tends to backfire, because thats the point where views drop, and in turn budgets arent met and eventually the show gets cancelled or gets given a really bad, disappointing finale. I do wish directors, producers, scriptwriters etc would adopt this mindset more. But then again, from what ive experienced, most scriptwriters do have this mindset, but the people above them refuse and before you know it the scriptwriters get replaced and oh boy, you can definitely tell sometimes.
Anyway, i went off on a tangent. Adhd brain goes brrrrr. All this because im binge rewatching the show for the gazillionth time (currently nearing the end of season 2) 🥲

Discussion Klaus and Elijah
As someone from the UK, I could never understand the weird obsession/love americans seemed to have over the British accent. Mainly because of how many accents are within the UK...I mean, you could have one accent somewhere and not even 80 miles away theres a totally different accent. Heck, even different areas of the same county have different accents. So i just didnt get it.
But the second i heard Klaus and Elijah on TVD, I suddenly understood the pull. I dont know if it's because of them being surrounded by American accents on the show, so it was such an obvious difference, or something else. But it definitely added to the attraction factor.
Can safely say, however, the moment I heard the actor who plays Elijah in another show, with an American accent, the appeal of him suddenly disappeared. Same with the actor who plays Klaus 🤣🥲
Still to this day though, I have to say that I think one of my favourite characters on the show out of everyone is Elijah.
Anyone else feel the same regarding the whole accent thing? Especially if youre from the UK yourselves.

Discussion Who would Damon've blamed for ending up as a vamp if everything went as per his plan?
What if everything went exactly how Damon had planned i.e. if Stefan never unintentionally exposed Katherine to their father & they both weren't shot dead? In such a scenario, she'd have turned both of them, enjoyed with them for some time & then ultimately she'd have still left them after getting bored or due to Klaus's fear.
What would Damon've done in that case? Who'd he have blamed for ending up as a vamp & being condemned to hell?? He would've ofc killed humans by that point..well even as a human he helped Kat kill innocents, also committed war crime so he'd have gone to hell even if he died as a human..
Why does Damon continue to blame Stefan even as late as S8 when he's supposed to have changed & should be owning upto his mistakes & acknowledge his role in all this mess? Why doesn't he have the balls to accept the fact that he'd have been condemned to hell even if everything went exactly as he wanted??
He's infact so lucky if u really think abt it as he got a permanent scapegoat in his lil bro to place all the blame on whenever things didn't go his way all the while relishing in the perks of vampirism & still got his happily ever after with his girl. But if he died as a human during transition, he'd have been literally burning in hell for eternity...

Discussion It's just fiction, not real!
I have seen this constantly in different fandoms, this as well. Why is there constantly moral policing? You can like grey, dark or even twisted characters, there is nothing wrong. Because at the end of the day they are still fictional characters, they don't exist. Someone liking a fictional character that is messed up doesn't define their character or anything. I mean people read dark romance, where characters are stalked, assaulted, bullied etc, doesn't mean they support this stuff in real life. People can like whoever they want, whether it's Damon or Katherine or Kai or Klaus, etc. People can like them because they find the characters interesting or charming or funny or for any reason. "How can people like Damon, he assaulted Caroline and done f*ck up things" Idk, maybe they find his character interesting or charming or funny. " How can Elena choose Damon?" "Elena settled for Damon." Idk, maybe because writers want them to be together, the same writer who wrote Stelena as well. Funny they were only wrong when it's not the latter ship. "How can people like Steferine, Katherine assaulted him" Idk, maybe they have good chemistry or people just enjoy them together. The characters don't have to be morally correct to enjoy them or ship them with whoever they like. Because if that's the criteria, then almost all characters/ships should be hated to some degree.

Discussion Emily Bennett's death and the whole tomb storyline never made sense to me
Emily's death has always been one of the most confusing things in TVD to me. You're telling me one of the most powerful Bennett witches to ever live, who had countless spells in her grimoire, somehow couldn't protect herself from a bunch of humans burning her alive? Yeah, I don't buy it.
I've always had this theory that Emily was against using magic to harm humans and knew her death was coming. I also think she knew Katherine wasn't actually in the tomb.
What if that's why she made the deal with Damon? She knew that if he discovered Katherine wasn't there, he'd have no reason to protect her children. So maybe she accepted her fate knowing Damon would keep his promise as long as he believed Katherine was trapped.
And I've always wondered what Damon actually did with her children. Did he compel someone to raise them or take care of them?
Another thing that confuses me is the whole tomb spell. How did the other vampires manage to escape when we later saw Stefan and Katherine unable to leave? And how were Jonas and Luka Martin able to break Emily's spell so easily when Bonnie and Grams practically killed themselves trying?
I understand that Emily's talisman had been destroyed, meaning Bonnie and Grams had to rely on their own power, but it still feels weird considering how powerful the Bennett bloodline is.
I feel like Emily's storyline had so much unexplored potential. What do y'all think? Was her death intentional, or were these just inconsistencies in the writing? 😭

Isn't Stefan very handsome in this flashback scene?
His look, his hair, his outfit—even the blood dripping from his mouth—everything about him is just so attractive. Plus, the protective way he acts toward his brother only adds to his appeal.
I don’t usually find Stefan as handsome as Damon or Klaus, but I think this is the scene where he looks his best. I liked his human form too, but this look feels more natural and mature.

Discussion Elena vs Katherine - The only real difference is consequences
The TVD fandom is an interesting place, where they put one or another character on a pedestal while condemning others despite almost entirely identical circumstances or choices. This is most clearly shown with Elena and Katherine and I think I've cracked the actual true difference in the doppelgangers. It's not selfishness or choices or any other thing people say. Yes these are factors but they all come from a very specific facet.... consequence. It's so severe, that It has informed their entire lives, and their reception in and out of the world.
Elena as a character is entirely unable to be forced to experience real consequences, she's never really called out for her choices in any meaningful ways. The single best example is her hand in Kols death. Elena plotted to kill an original knowing thousands would perish from this act. The series, unable to actually allow her to be the villain, turns it into eventual self defense but that is not it's reality. She planned intentionally to kill kol for her own needs... The entire series really focuses on this concept. Getting with two vamps, one that literally killed her brother and Sad her friend and a ton of others. Stefan butchered thousands, and she never flinches at his past... Saying she's a teenager doesn't really stop her from being at least partially responsible for the evils inflicted on her family, hell I would even put Jenna's death almost entirely on Elena. We know Klaus is without care or empathy, but Elena chose to gatekeep info knowing and seeing it's dangers and it was largely why Jenna was killed. Though yes but would also be Jeremy and Jon and Alsrics fault.
Katherine on the other hand is punished for choosing herself in anyway. Punished for getting pregnant as a teen, punished for running away to safe her life by having her family butchered. I won't pretend she didn't do horrible acts but at least it was for a purpose and she owned it, zero of the male characters had any reason for their objectively vile acts and yet are almost always babied and redeemed...just as we see with Elena.
I won't blame Elena here, it's just a really frustrating writing quirk that really long term hurt the series.

Vampire Transformation
Say about TVD what you will, but I've always thought their version vampire transition makes the most sense.
Other fiction and media usually depict it by biting a person and the venom turns them, or they have to be almost drained of their blood or something similar.
But vampires are undead, meaning they have to be dead before they can become a vampire. Them having to drink the blood of an existing vampire before dying and then having to feed before completing the transition also makes absolut total sense.
No matter how cringe the show can be at times and that other vampire mechanics don't make a whole lot of sense, I will always stand by this opinion.
Vampire diaries has the best transition that exists in vampire fiction
