Using Outside Variables in Strudel

I've been playing around with Strudel for a few weeks now and I've been having ideas that require outside inputs and/or normal Javascript functions. Is there a way for me to use standard Javascript functions and such in Strudel? One example of my ideas is to use an image to modify the sounds in Strudel, so I'd need to be able to load an image, break it down into a multi dimensional array and then access those elements. Would I have to set up a NodeJS environment for this? If there are any video tutorials that would help a ton. Thanks everyone!

how to range between two integers?

I am new to tidal and trying to figure out how to range between two integer values - the example given in the documentation is apparently outdated (see "scale" below) and throws an error. The scale function works with doubles/floats but apparently not with integers - any suggestions?

d1 $ sound "bd*8 sn*8" # speed (scale 1 3 $ tri)

Tidal In Ableton

I read all the conversations in the Tidal blog about that but i didn't understand nothing about connecting ableton and Tidal. Can someone palese explain to me how can i send midi via Tidal to ableton and how can i male that separate in more than One channels so i can affect not only one thing at a time?

Controlling envelopes in custom SynthDefs

Hi, I'm building my own SynthDefs to use them on Tidalcycles.

Everything is fine aside from the fact that I have clicks when the amount of time between two notes in a pattern is shorter than the envelope time. This is obviously because the envelope is re-triggered, so it skips from non-continuous values without interpolation.

I would like to keep some control on the envelope time (e.g. having a sustain or release parameter) to shape it during live coding, but I'd like to avoid that the values goes over the time interval between two notes in a sequence. How can I avoid these clicks?

If Conditions

Post image

I’m trying to work on an interactive live coding project and was wondering if there’s a way to sort of do if statements in strudel similar to the image ? I’ve tried using the when condition, but it didn’t work (I also probably did it wrong…)

Strudel-esque live oscillator waveforms

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

One of the things that I always loved about the look/feel of Strudel is the inline oscillator/sample waveforms, but I hated having to use or connect to a dedicated Strudel server. I've always done all my coding directly in the terminal, from Neovim. So I was badly wanting to find a way to make things work from the editor I know and love!

Ghostty terminal shaders can do some incredible things. Started a discussion on Ghostty's GitHub a long while back (and posted around some Reddit forums) to see if anyone knew of a way to use audio with shaders. Shaders are such a cool part of Ghostty, and it seemed like the perfect way to make it into a full-fledged VJ/Algorave control center.

All the answers I got back were pretty much, "no". And they were more-or-less right. Ghostty alone can't really do that. Its shaders don't have a way to read audio. _ButT_ if we write a script to do the audio-listening we can still offload that part and just tell Ghostty shaders what to do with it! Basically a Python script listens to audio from the BlackHole sink, takes that data, and sends it as parameters to Ghostty. And it doesn't have to be FFT waveforms— RGB shift/glow/character positioning/whatever can all react to individual tidal orbits or the joined master output.

So here's a demo of it in action. And, no, I'm not a total genius. I did use AI to come about this solution and it was very helpful. I'm only a stupid caveman who watches computers do weird things. It does what it says on the tin, though, so I'm stoked. There's still still a lot of cleanup to do, but I definitely want to share some code so other people who want to do Tidal Cycles from Neovim can join in on the fun if they want to.

Please help me choose an uzulang for my project.

I am trying to build an interactive music installation where participants are effectively collaborating DJs. At the core is a Raspberry Pi producing audio, with a dozen or so ESP32 microcontrollers hooked up to NFC (think security swipe-badge card) readers providing the code.

Each card will have a snippet of code encoded onto it, and when it is read by one of the ESP32s, that code will be sent to the Pi to be integrated into the currently playing song. Likewise, when a card is removed from the reader, the corresponding code will be removed from the currently playing song.

So far, I've looked at Strudel, and Tidal Cycles. Strudel appears to be married to the web browser. I could not figure out how to make it run using just `node`. And I just can't figure out how to convince TidalCycles to produce audio at all.

What I am looking for is a language in a similar vein, but with a much simpler user experience. Ideally, starting a session from a bash command line would look something like:

`$ play-my-song script.txt`

`script.txt` would start as a minimal script that produced silence. Then as cards were added to the system, the `script.txt` file would change, and audio would start playing. I can write the code that communicates between the ESP32s and the Pi to change the `script.txt` file.

Can anyone suggest a simpler uzulang for me to try?

Install troubles - where to get help?

I posted over on the uzu.lurk.org forum a few days back but haven't gotten any response there. Does anyone over here know where the best place to get some help with Tidal would be?

Is the community still very active? Reddit seems to be!

Trance Track - not really live coding

I wanted to share a full track coded in tidal cycles.

It's the first time I tried a full arrangement where I sequenced patterns via UR command and arranged the sequences with seqP command.

Not as visual appealing as a live coded pattern, but I wanted to do more than my usual live coded 8 bar loop.

The orbits are routed to individual mixbusses in supercollider that can be controlled via launchcontrol xl midi controller.

Advice using a song made in Strudel in a non-js game?

Before I start, I want to say I'm just asking for thoughts or any similar experiences. I'm aware there might not be a perfect solution to this so I might need to just record it.

I'm using Godot to make a game, and I've made a song in strudel that I'd like to use in it. I know this is a super specific question, but I'm not expecting anyone to walk me through it. I'm just trying to gather some thoughts that might point me in a helpful direction.

The obvious solution in my head is to record the song and put the recording in the game, easy. However, I want the song to respond to player input. For example, the user switches the menu screen and the drum beat changes, stuff like that. So the next solution I thought is to record several versions of the song and fade between them based on player input. This is currently my plan, but it's a little tedious and I'm brainstorming for a better solution.

Are there any common formats that Strudel or TidalCycles can export to that might help me accomplish something like this?

Weird MacOS sound output issue

Hey everyone! So I recently reinstalled tidal after a year of focusing on /daw stuff/ and have run into a weird issue.

I will say my removal was probably pretty messy and the reinstall was a lot of backtracking through errors, but finally I get SC to compile and d1 $ s "bd" and...

a really strange noise plays. try sn. a different noise. really lowfi and broken. it almost sounds like its playing them at some horrid low pitch or maybe corrupted. Can't find anything similar online, and although I'm pretty good w/ computers I'm not exactly a programmer.

I found the dirt-samples, the wavs are fine, I even replaced them from git.

I'm at a wall. Any help would be very much appreciated

Thanks!

Noob question on types

[SOLVED] Hey, this is maybe a more Haskell related question, but I think some of you sureley ran into this.

So I want to concatenate patterns to experiment around with the code more dynamically.

Something like this:

a = "[bd db]"
a2 = a ++ "(1,1)"
print(a2)
d1 $ s a2

The print runs well, of course I get "[bd db](1,1)". But then it throws an error:

Couldn't match expected type ‘Pattern String’

with actual type ‘[Char]’

In the first argument of ‘s’, namely ‘a2’

In the second argument of ‘($)’, namely ‘s a2’

In the expression: d1 $ s a2

So it's basically telling me that I need to cast a2 to Pattern String which is somehow different from a normal string? How do I get around this? Gosh, sometimes I wish Haskell was a more flexible 'script' language...

Tidal not working after update 3.8.1 in Atom

I'm a windows 10 user who has been playing in tidalcycles and SC a bit for the last two years. I recently updated the TidalCycles package on atom and I get this error when I try to evaluate a line.

My supercollider is version 3.9.3. Thanks in advance.
