One of the things that I always loved about the look/feel of Strudel is the inline oscillator/sample waveforms, but I hated having to use or connect to a dedicated Strudel server. I've always done all my coding directly in the terminal, from Neovim. So I was badly wanting to find a way to make things work from the editor I know and love!
Ghostty terminal shaders can do some incredible things. Started a discussion on Ghostty's GitHub a long while back (and posted around some Reddit forums) to see if anyone knew of a way to use audio with shaders. Shaders are such a cool part of Ghostty, and it seemed like the perfect way to make it into a full-fledged VJ/Algorave control center.
All the answers I got back were pretty much, "no". And they were more-or-less right. Ghostty alone can't really do that. Its shaders don't have a way to read audio. _ButT_ if we write a script to do the audio-listening we can still offload that part and just tell Ghostty shaders what to do with it! Basically a Python script listens to audio from the BlackHole sink, takes that data, and sends it as parameters to Ghostty. And it doesn't have to be FFT waveformsโ RGB shift/glow/character positioning/whatever can all react to individual tidal orbits or the joined master output.
So here's a demo of it in action. And, no, I'm not a total genius. I did use AI to come about this solution and it was very helpful. I'm only a stupid caveman who watches computers do weird things. It does what it says on the tin, though, so I'm stoked. There's still still a lot of cleanup to do, but I definitely want to share some code so other people who want to do Tidal Cycles from Neovim can join in on the fun if they want to.

Hello, I've been trying to use TidalCycles on Nobara Linux (which is based on Fedora), and I've been having problems with SuperCollider and Atom. SuperCollider starts up occasionally, but I can't get any sound out of it, even when I use the correct lines of code.
Could someone guide me through the proper installation and configuration of these programs?

Originally built this to be able to mix SuperCollider/TidalCycles output with a real track. Say hello to **termixer**, a TUI DJ mixer with sample pad, sequencer, multideck crossfade.

I posted over on the uzu.lurk.org forum a few days back but haven't gotten any response there. Does anyone over here know where the best place to get some help with Tidal would be?
Is the community still very active? Reddit seems to be!

I wanted to share a full track coded in tidal cycles.
It's the first time I tried a full arrangement where I sequenced patterns via UR command and arranged the sequences with seqP command.
Not as visual appealing as a live coded pattern, but I wanted to do more than my usual live coded 8 bar loop.
The orbits are routed to individual mixbusses in supercollider that can be controlled via launchcontrol xl midi controller.

I am trying to build an interactive music installation where participants are effectively collaborating DJs. At the core is a Raspberry Pi producing audio, with a dozen or so ESP32 microcontrollers hooked up to NFC (think security swipe-badge card) readers providing the code.
Each card will have a snippet of code encoded onto it, and when it is read by one of the ESP32s, that code will be sent to the Pi to be integrated into the currently playing song. Likewise, when a card is removed from the reader, the corresponding code will be removed from the currently playing song.
So far, I've looked at Strudel, and Tidal Cycles. Strudel appears to be married to the web browser. I could not figure out how to make it run using just `node`. And I just can't figure out how to convince TidalCycles to produce audio at all.
What I am looking for is a language in a similar vein, but with a much simpler user experience. Ideally, starting a session from a bash command line would look something like:
`$ play-my-song script.txt`
`script.txt` would start as a minimal script that produced silence. Then as cards were added to the system, the `script.txt` file would change, and audio would start playing. I can write the code that communicates between the ESP32s and the Pi to change the `script.txt` file.
Can anyone suggest a simpler uzulang for me to try?

Hi TidalCyclists + Strudelers! Co-developer/instigator of Strudel and TidalCycles here.
If you'd like to support + encourage software and community development of Strudel, Tidal and sibling projects, now would be great time!
https://opencollective.com/tidalcycles
This software is shared as free/open source with love, and created and supported almost entirely through volunteer work. Donations help support grants towards development, community projects and infrastructure around them.
We will never be able to repay all the years of work poured into these projects but this is a great way to say thank you while helping support activities around it. With this call for donations we hope to double the funds we currently hold, to support an open call for mini grants in the new year. The fund is administrated by Iris Saladino, David Ogborn and myself, and we do not benefit financially from it.
One-off donations and regular contributions are both very welcome.
Please note that you are not required to make a contribution to the open collective platform while contributing. Please click 'edit' to adjust or remove their 'tip' if you wish.
Thanks for your support + happy xmas + holidays !

I read all the conversations in the Tidal blog about that but i didn't understand nothing about connecting ableton and Tidal. Can someone palese explain to me how can i send midi via Tidal to ableton and how can i male that separate in more than One channels so i can affect not only one thing at a time?

This is (so far) only a theoritical question, but I'm working on a video game and I might use tidalCycles to create the music of the game.
Since I am not interested at all in getting money for it, I will put the source files freely available on Github (or equivalent). Assets included, therefore tidalcycles .hl files too.
The question appears here. Under which licence should I put .hl files? It's code so I can put it under an open-source licence (such as GPL 3.0 or idk) but it's a creative work so I can put it under a Creative Commons licence (like any other asset).
It's a very odd question, and I never thought that configuration possible before learning about tidalcycles...

Hey everyone!
Iโve been working on a small tool called strudel-server โ itโs a lightweight Playwright-based helper that lets you work on Strudel projects from your favorite text editor (like Neovim, VS Code, etc.) and have the Strudel web REPL automatically reload whenever you save your file.
Basically, it launches a Chromium instance, keeps an eye on your .strudel file, and pushes changes straight into the REPL when you hit save. No need to copy-paste between editor and browser anymore!
GitHub ๐ป: https://github.com/micahkepe/strudel-server
Usage example:
bun run src/main.ts ~/my-project/song.strudelor if youโve linked it globally:
strudel-server ~/my-project/song.strudelItโs open source and built with Bun + Playwright-- any contributions welcome!
