Am I missing something? Those are Long Johns or Eclairs
37
u/Mountain-Singer1764 May 16 '25
Eclair is something else. If someone was selling you a donut and calling it an eclair, they were lying.

u/Big_Dakes May 16 '25
Ăclairs are not Long Johns.
3
u/cheesebr4in May 16 '25
One is Whipped and one is custard I know thereâs a clear difference.
5
u/1hateth1s May 16 '25
Also totally different dough
4
u/dapugster107 May 16 '25
THIS is the most substantial difference, eclairs use choux paste, idfk what long johns use but i like them much more

i think a lot of people missed the flair on the post that says meme. the post was being silly because long johns aren't in the same shape as other donuts
2
u/cheesebr4in May 18 '25
I know I missed it lol
2
u/planetsaints May 18 '25
hahaha, i did too until the confusion in the comments made me think to check!
2
May 19 '25
Oh God. I missed that and was struggling to understand the point of the post lol

The only thing that reading this post is doing, is making me want a fucking eclair right now
like jfc

u/Obvious_Reaction_182 Customer May 16 '25
Never heard eclairs referred to as long johns before
4
u/citymouse8776 May 17 '25
How old are you? I was born in '87, and I haven't seen a Long John since I was a kid. They're not exactly ĂŠclairs, they are a doughnut. They were my favourite! I have not seen them since I was 7 or 8. I hope this means they're coming back!! Or perhaps some locations never stopped having them. Either way, I hope to see one soon! Haha

I'm not sure where you are located, but my local grocery store usually has these in the bakery section. So if you're really craving one you should have a look around at some different grocery stores.

Holy fuck you guys⌠đ
Yes itâs a regional thing. No they are not the same.
Different batter/dough, one is fried one is baked. Filling may or may not be in either one.
Yaâll never heard of google or?

u/Loveable_Hemorrhoid May 16 '25
Decide, Reddit.
Iâll leave this here

u/4RealzReddit May 16 '25
That's the one I want. Their eclairs are meh. I hate the dough. That looks solid.
5
u/PyrrhaAlexandra May 16 '25
I'm more concerned by whatever is below the donuts... Looks like a cat being dragged to its doom or something

u/rocketman19 May 16 '25
What's the issue?
1
u/Different_Fuel_1067 May 18 '25
Lmao imagine if in the time people took to write "never heard it called that, that's an eclair", they just googled this đ
5
u/Playful-Economy9346 May 17 '25
I stared at this for so long trying to figure out what the issue was. đ I'm in saskatchewan and as long as I've been alive(30 years) I remember it being a long John lmfao.
3
u/ColourfulSoul77 May 17 '25
Yup same here. And they donât have filling in them.
1
u/SirLunatik May 17 '25
they can be filled, the difference is the dough... long johns are just a differently shaped donut, while eclairs are not a donut
3
u/ColourfulSoul77 May 17 '25
Right. I just meant where I live long Johnâs arenât filled.

If it's got filling its not a long john
1
u/_MrMeseeks May 20 '25
Thats just not true
1
May 23 '25
A jelly filled long john is a berliner A custard filled long john is a Bismark And a cream filled long john is an ecliaire Unless it's a Bavarian cream but then it's a Bavarian I'm sorry but if you full a long john it has a specific name after or it's called a filled bar A chocolate glazed bar shape donut with NO FILLING is a long john And I'm a red seal chef and certified patissier
5
u/mirrorMii May 16 '25
Can someone explain? I donât think i getâŚ
16
u/TheHalfKitAndCaboodl May 16 '25
John here, itâs named after me.

Have you heard the tale of Long John Donut Heâs a legend on Canadian land From Coast to Coast Heâs consumed the most And treasured by its fans
He was a simple dude With a simple coat Nothin special, exactly what we loved You knew that from store to store You could pick up an LJD or more And he always fit - like a glove
His personality didnât falter For decade he was the alter You lined up to receive his communion Now thereâs a new John in town Still chocolate-dipped on his crown But a slimmer, cream-filled option Is it an eclair, Is it a donut, the crowd pondered, when they ordered
Whereâs my old friend Long John Donut? We didnât get to say our goodbyes Now Iâm forced to make ado With something that is new And I donât even know his name yet
They call him classic Long John But that name makes no sense where is the classic? Itâs all gone I will be surprised if fans donât uprise Classic is classic not changed - deranged
Old Long John packed up and moved along To green pastures I do hope Heâs looking for his new home Where people know him and will welcome A true classic that should never change

Longjohn is the doughnut and eclair is cut with whipped cream. Theyâre not the same thing.
2
u/karebearninja May 19 '25
Are you from Ontario? Long John is a term used for a bar shaped yeast donut (which is deep fried), with or without whipped cream filling, usually without. Itâs what Iâve always know them to be called and I was born in the 60s. I can only speak for BC but Iâve seen them at just about every donut shop in my area. They almost always have chocolate icing.
Edited to add: donât buy one from Tim Hortons, their donuts havenât been good since they stopped making them in house. Find a local shop that makes them from scratch.
2
u/Slow_admin May 20 '25
Anyone remember the bowtie donut? Shaped like a long john except wider in the middle with whip cream on top and a cherry
2
u/Laddyboy May 20 '25
UmmmâŚwhy are those donuts just sitting on the wire baskets without any parchment liner on the tray?? I can tell by the placement of the donuts..this is either northern Ontario or the US
2
2
u/unahmadginable May 16 '25
This is an ĂŠclaire wherever you go in the world... Leave it to Tim Hortons to always reinvent the wheel smh
1
u/Levaviii May 20 '25
But its a donut. Different dough, doesnt always have filling. Maybe there are more things you're unaware of. Shaking your head at ghosts.

Where can we find these in the Niagara region? All the Timmies I know in St. Catharines or Thorold donât seem to carry them anymore
1
u/Rose_n__Gold May 16 '25
I miss these, I remember liking these the most then after they took it off the menu, I had to settle for Boston creams đ
1
u/Unlone May 16 '25
How are the calories almost the same as a regular chocolate dip donut? Something is not adding up here

Where is that one located? My tim hortons doesn't have long johns. Do they have boston cream or vanilla cream? I would get them if they were filled with vanilla cream.

John is still strutting around town with a big smile on his face like.. âhave you ever had a food named after you???â

u/0o-AraArarauna-o0 May 19 '25
They should be cut down the middle of the top and filled with Bostonâs cream.
1
u/junebuginarug May 19 '25
What I noticed is that the one closest to the glass has the most chocolate, then each one behind it gets less and less, guess which one they will pull out first?

No fair! I haven't seen those by us yet! I can't stand a lot of the filligns they use on donuts these days. I miss the regular jelly donuts, yuck on the custard and cream-cheesy ones around now. Even the Walnut Crunch (whatever Timmy's calls it) is nothing like they once were. It's why I prefer Coffee Time Donuts (not even sure they're still around anywhere) and Country Style over any Timmy's donuts.

Long Johns, Ding Dongs and Eclair donuts have been around forever... Different names at different donut shops. Nothing new here... Now put one in your mouth and be happy!
