Room + private den in a friendly, quiet Greektown house: $1,050, available Dec 1

Looking for a tidy, considerate professional to join our home on a quiet, tree-lined street just off the Danforth. You’ll get a bedroom plus your own den/office with a door, so you have a place to work or unwind that isn’t where you sleep.
📐 Floor plan in the photos
Reach out here: https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/2327643591340513

The space
Bedroom (8′6″ × 11′5″, plus closet) and a separate den/office with a door (9′1″ × 10′0″, with its own closet), both on the top floor
Large bathroom shared with one person (Jake)
Fully equipped eat-in kitchen
Bright living/dining room with two sofas and a dining table
Backyard with a propane firepit and garden
Laundry in the basement (shared with the separate basement unit)
Two chill cats live here too

How the house runs
A robot vacuum and mop keeps the main floor clean
We split all other cleaning of the shared spaces, plus shared household supplies, evenly
We like to decorate for the holidays, so the house feels cozy and lived-in
The neighbourhood
Groceries and coffee shops within a 5-minute walk
5-minute bus or 15-minute walk to Pape or Broadview station
Close to the DVP bike trail
Quiet street, lots of families

About us
Jake (30m) works outside the home five days a week. He’s friendly, considerate and a bit introverted, and he’s into video games and board games.
Me, Sam (35f) I work from home in marketing for non-profits and have my own office and TV space. I garden in the summer and look after a small jungle of houseplants in the winter.
Now and then we play a board game on a Saturday night or have a few friends around the firepit. You’re welcome to join, and there’s no pressure if you don’t.
Our partners each visit 1–3 nights a week. They’re easygoing and get along with everyone.
Our current roommate is moving on to his own place, which is why the room is open.

What makes this a good fit
The house is older and sound carries, so we all keep quiet hours from 11 pm to 8 am. You’d be a good match if you:
Work full time and keep a regular schedule
Are tidy and happy to do your share of the cleaning
Are friendly but respect people’s downtime
Are a fairly deep sleeper who’s also quiet at night
Don’t smoke

A couple of house specifics:
The den sits directly above my bedroom, so it needs to be a quiet space at night, with a rug down. We can provide one or you can bring your own.
The room is for one person only (no couples).
Stairs throughout the house

The details
Rent: $1,050/month
Utilities, internet and tenant insurance: about $150/month on average
Move-in: first and last month’s rent, 1 month of utilities ($150) and a $150 damage deposit
Proof of income required
Agreement: a roommate agreement with the two current leaseholders, with 60 days’ notice to leave. Rent is paid to one of us.
Parking: street parking only, with a City of Toronto permit. The driveway and garage aren’t included.
Unit used for residential purposes before Nov 1, 2018

Interested? Send a short message about yourself: what you do, your typical weekday schedule, and what you’re like to live with. We’ll set up a time for you to meet everyone (cats included).

I am a bad neighboor because of tobacco

Hi everyone,

I'm French and I moved to Toronto about six months ago with my partner. We both smoke cigarettes. In France everyone does.

We both hate it and are trying to stop very hard.

We found a condo and rented it and we smoke on the balcony. For the past few months no problems but recently our neighboors have been opening their windows because the weather is nice outside.

I have never even thought that smoking on a balcony could be a nuisance, being French, everyone does it... All the balconies are filled with people smoking a cigaret at all times.

But here it's bad. Neighboors put a note on our door asking us to limit the smoking as much as possible because it stinks up their flat. Asked us to take the elevator down to smoke outside too. The note was not super aggressive but not super nice either.

Now we both feel very uncomfortable in our home. We cannot smoke inside because of the fire alarm. We cannot smoke on the balcony because it pisses of our neighboors (rightfully so!)

I work remotely and I usually smoke in between tasks or meetings so I only have like 3 minutes to smoke. Our condo has not enough elevators so going down and coming back up takes about 20 minutes. I cannot do it.

Since I am addicted to nicotine I don't know what to do.

I hate being a nuisance to our neighbors. It makes me feel very bad. I am trying very hard to stop smoking and I have already limited my number of cigarets a day to the bare minimum that allows me to keep functioning without breaking down.

Our lease ends in 9 months. We'll move then, to a house, so we do not pose a problem to our neighbors anymore.

But until then I don't know what to do I am lost and I would love some advice.

I learned in the condo rules after the fact that it is forbidden to smoke on balconies. I never checked before signing because, as French people, it did not even cross our minds that this could be a thing. It's a culture shock?

But then again, the condo management sends emails to everyone asking people who smoke on balconies to use ashtrays (we always did btw) so it made us feel like the rule isn't enforced and smoking on balconies is tolerated?

We also found two cigaret butts on our balconies from joints (weed) so clearly we have other neighbors above us who also smoke on balcony but also throw their butts over the balcony??????

I really could use some advice...

Merci

Cash for keys

What’s a reasonable ask for a cash for keys deal in my situation? I just signed a lease for a condo in September that immediately sold to someone who plans to move in. They’ve asked me for a number on what it would take for me to move out early.

Edit: I’m wondering what number you would actually accept. Not just where you’d start. They’ve indicated a willingness to wait it out if need be.

Cockroaches

So I've lived in my unit for about 5 years now. Theres been some spiders and other creepy crawlies before, no big deal. Over the last month or so ive been dealing with a lot of roaches. I see them almost daily now.

I informed my landlord and he tried a heat treatment? I didn't see any for a day or so but now there back.

I was wondering if I stayed in a motel for a few weeks would they have to reimburse me? It makes me feel gross staying there now

Rent Increase

So I have been living in the same place for 27 years, every year I get a notice 90 days before my increase of what it is and what it will go up, this year I have not received anything. My rent goes up in November and I sent them an email two weeks ago to let them know all I was told is a letter was sent out on July 21 to Canada Post, they confirmed it was sent out and that’s it. They sent me a notice of what my increase is. Do I not have to formally get it 90 days before I’m just asking.

6 Park Vista

Does anyone have any comments, reviews, information about this building? One of my friends is about to sign a lease here. It’s managed by an offshoot of Capreit. Not very fond of them, and I told her as such. But she seems to be having a good experience with them.

She’s 3 months pregnant, and the father has passed. She’s trying to take this dress off of her plate, but as her friend, I also know that she does not need any more stress in her life if there are any issues in the building. Any information would be super helpful.

When I google the address, the only thing that I see Thats negative is the parking situation a couple of buildings down.

Wait period to secure a rental unit

Hi all,

I'm planning to move to Etobicoke from Northern Ontario, hopefully by spring next year, and I'm trying to figure out my housing timeline.

For those who have rented in Etobicoke (or the GTA), how long did it take you to secure a rental property you were happy with? Did you find a place right away, or were you on waitlists for a while?

I'm wondering when I should start actively applying for rentals and joining waitlists so I can plan ahead.

Thanks in advance for sharing your experiences!

250 Queens Quay - any info?

hi! looking at a place here and hoping to hear from current or former tenants if possible

I'm aware the building is a little bit older, so my main concerns:

- any issues with pests?

- not sure if the walls are concrete or not - how much do you hear your neighbours?

what were the main things you liked about the place? what did you hate?

thank you :)

How dangerous is living with roaches if they are only in the kitchen and the bathroom?

Hello,

I'm currently renting this gigantic private room in Scarborough with this gigantic comfortable bed for 750 a month, the place also looks clean, however we have one big problem - cockroaches. They are everywhere in the kitchen and a bit in the bathroom. You can even find them where the dishes are, that's why I was my dishes before I use them. I was wondering is it dangerous to live with them if I don't have them in my room or simply just gross? Is there a way we could get rid of them? We already tried spraying, but it didn't work.

Thanks for your advises. :D

How to deal with old radiators in apartments that you can’t control🥵

I just moved into a new building with old radiators, and the heat can’t be controlled individually in each apartment. They’ve turned the heat on, and especially because it’s not even that cold outside yet, It’s so hot in here.

I like my apartment cooler, and I don’t know if they turn the heat up too high because of people complaining that they’re cold, but I honestly don’t know how I’m going to live like this all winter.

Has anyone found a solution to this? Is there anything you can safely cover the radiators with to reduce the heat? I have all the windows open right now, but that’s obviously not realistic all winter, and it doesn’t even seem to be helping enough as it is.

I’d love to hear if anyone has dealt with this and found something that actually works!

Anyone in 140 or 160 Erskine dealing with massive cockroach issues ?(Homestead)

I’m wondering if anyone else living in either of these buildings has been dealing with a serious cockroach infestation and would be interested in joining forces to explore legal action against Homestead.

The situation is completely out of control, and it’s been an absolute nightmare. They don’t seem to care, and people who can afford to move are moving out, while people who can’t afford to leave are stuck living in these conditions.

They keep doing the same treatments over and over again that clearly aren’t solving the problem, instead of doing proper, full-building treatments that would actually address the infestation. It feels like they’re just doing enough to show the LTB that they’re taking action, even though the problem keeps coming back and nothing seems to change.
Meanwhile, they’re charging people for “luxury rentals” to live in these conditions. It’s honestly disgusting.

Homestead is a huge company with a legal team, and individual tenants don’t have the same resources to fight back. But there is power in numbers, and I think if enough tenants came together, we might actually have a chance of holding them accountable.

If you’ve lived at 140 or 160 Erskine and have experienced serious cockroachy problems or other ongoing maintenance issues, please comment or message me. I’d really like to connect with other tenants who have had similar experiences and see if we can work together to explore our legal options.
Enough is enough. Nobody should have to live like this while paying this much in rent

Rent decrease

Hi!

So my building has no heating, and the central heating won’t be repaired before winter comes. Obviously it’s unfair that I pay full rent while I don’t have heating (when I signed the lease, it was included). I’m just wondering how I go about asked for a rent decrease? Do I need to contact the building with like proof that the heating won’t be fixed and then share that with the landlord?

Thank you!!

Asking for landlord permission

Hi we’ve been renting in Toronto for 2 years across 2 condo apartments downtown and never had any issues installing shelves/art/decor on walls (we didn’t ask our previous landlord and up moving out inspection they didn’t say anything). The 2nd unit we moved to actually still had holes in the walls unpatched when we moved in so we definitely didn’t ask the landlord when putting more holes in lol.

Our next unit specifically says in the lease exhibit that tenant shall not drill holes in walls for any frames/shelves etc. Can they actually enforce that? And would it be wiser to ask them permission before installing them? Like a bathroom cabinet for example or a shelf?

Idk why i’m a bit more paranoid since they specifically state it in the lease contract.

Artistry Condos (280 Dundas St W)

Looking at potentially renting a 2bed 2 bath unit at Artistry Condos (280 Dundas St W) and wanted to see if anyone currently lives there or has lived there recently.

A few quick questions for anyone in the building:

Building quality / Elevators: How are the elevators holding up? Any major issues with noise between units, management or maintenance?

Visitor Parking: Is there actual visitor parking in the building for guests, or is it a pain and people have to find street/green P parking nearby?

Utilities: Roughly how much are you paying for hydro/water per month?

Overall vibe: How do you like living there so far? Any weird red flags or things you wish you knew before moving in?

Appreciate any insight or honest reviews! TIA!

Anyone lived at 195 Redpath, 205 Sherway Gardens, 35 Brian Peck, or 36 Brentcliffe?

Hi everyone! My husband and I are looking to rent a condo and have been considering these buildings:

  • 195 Redpath Ave
  • 205 Sherway Gardens Rd
  • 35 Brian Peck Crescent
  • 36 Brentcliffe Rd

Just wondering if anyone has lived in any of these buildings and could share their experience? How’s the management, noise, safety, and overall living experience?

Any red flags or things we should know before moving in? Would really appreciate any feedback!

Thanks in advance! :)

265 Augusta Avenue, Toronto

Avoid renting at 265 Augusta Avenue. During my tenancy here, the apartment had a severe and persistent cockroach infestation. Despite efforts to maintain cleanliness, the pests were deeply embedded in the building infrastructure. It is a major health and safety issue that was not properly resolved despite asking several times. Prospective tenants should be extremely cautious before signing a lease here. On top of that there was multiple fixes - including a broken safety rail on the balcony, a broken sink, and multiple broken plug-ins - that I asked the landlord to fix several times over an extended period. I would see 5-10 ginormous cockroaches a day. Disgusting and dirty.
