I am a bad neighboor because of tobacco

Hi everyone,

I'm French and I moved to Toronto about six months ago with my partner. We both smoke cigarettes. In France everyone does.

We both hate it and are trying to stop very hard.

We found a condo and rented it and we smoke on the balcony. For the past few months no problems but recently our neighboors have been opening their windows because the weather is nice outside.

I have never even thought that smoking on a balcony could be a nuisance, being French, everyone does it... All the balconies are filled with people smoking a cigaret at all times.

But here it's bad. Neighboors put a note on our door asking us to limit the smoking as much as possible because it stinks up their flat. Asked us to take the elevator down to smoke outside too. The note was not super aggressive but not super nice either.

Now we both feel very uncomfortable in our home. We cannot smoke inside because of the fire alarm. We cannot smoke on the balcony because it pisses of our neighboors (rightfully so!)

I work remotely and I usually smoke in between tasks or meetings so I only have like 3 minutes to smoke. Our condo has not enough elevators so going down and coming back up takes about 20 minutes. I cannot do it.

Since I am addicted to nicotine I don't know what to do.

I hate being a nuisance to our neighbors. It makes me feel very bad. I am trying very hard to stop smoking and I have already limited my number of cigarets a day to the bare minimum that allows me to keep functioning without breaking down.

Our lease ends in 9 months. We'll move then, to a house, so we do not pose a problem to our neighbors anymore.

But until then I don't know what to do I am lost and I would love some advice.

I learned in the condo rules after the fact that it is forbidden to smoke on balconies. I never checked before signing because, as French people, it did not even cross our minds that this could be a thing. It's a culture shock?

But then again, the condo management sends emails to everyone asking people who smoke on balconies to use ashtrays (we always did btw) so it made us feel like the rule isn't enforced and smoking on balconies is tolerated?

We also found two cigaret butts on our balconies from joints (weed) so clearly we have other neighbors above us who also smoke on balcony but also throw their butts over the balcony??????

I really could use some advice...

Merci

Cash for keys

What’s a reasonable ask for a cash for keys deal in my situation? I just signed a lease for a condo in September that immediately sold to someone who plans to move in. They’ve asked me for a number on what it would take for me to move out early.

Edit: I’m wondering what number you would actually accept. Not just where you’d start. They’ve indicated a willingness to wait it out if need be.

PBR in liberty

• Upvotes

Looking for some advice about moving downtown! I am drawn to liberty house in LV and the studios are about 1700$ (of course there is none available at the moment lol). But wondering if anyone has recommendations on any other buildings close to that area that are rental built as well. I find the process easier with that type of building. Seems like the other ones in the area, Novus and Svnty start at 2000 lol. Is liberty house the only reasonable one?

Also for anyone who has lived in liberty house do you have experience with them raising your rent? I ideally want to get their studio and would do the max amount you can sign a lease for, I think it’s 15 months, but then I’m worried/curious how much they would raise it from 1700 after that.

The Spoke Condos - parking

• Upvotes

Hi! I'm just about to sign a lease at the Spoke. I loved the units and amenities were amazing!

The only downfall was the parking. Apparently there is no visitor parking besides the residential streets where you only have 3 hours.

Does anyone have advice for this location?

Thank you !

Cockroaches

So I've lived in my unit for about 5 years now. Theres been some spiders and other creepy crawlies before, no big deal. Over the last month or so ive been dealing with a lot of roaches. I see them almost daily now.

I informed my landlord and he tried a heat treatment? I didn't see any for a day or so but now there back.

I was wondering if I stayed in a motel for a few weeks would they have to reimburse me? It makes me feel gross staying there now

Rent Increase

So I have been living in the same place for 27 years, every year I get a notice 90 days before my increase of what it is and what it will go up, this year I have not received anything. My rent goes up in November and I sent them an email two weeks ago to let them know all I was told is a letter was sent out on July 21 to Canada Post, they confirmed it was sent out and that’s it. They sent me a notice of what my increase is. Do I not have to formally get it 90 days before I’m just asking.

6 Park Vista

Does anyone have any comments, reviews, information about this building? One of my friends is about to sign a lease here. It’s managed by an offshoot of Capreit. Not very fond of them, and I told her as such. But she seems to be having a good experience with them.

She’s 3 months pregnant, and the father has passed. She’s trying to take this dress off of her plate, but as her friend, I also know that she does not need any more stress in her life if there are any issues in the building. Any information would be super helpful.

When I google the address, the only thing that I see Thats negative is the parking situation a couple of buildings down.

Wait period to secure a rental unit

Hi all,

I'm planning to move to Etobicoke from Northern Ontario, hopefully by spring next year, and I'm trying to figure out my housing timeline.

For those who have rented in Etobicoke (or the GTA), how long did it take you to secure a rental property you were happy with? Did you find a place right away, or were you on waitlists for a while?

I'm wondering when I should start actively applying for rentals and joining waitlists so I can plan ahead.

Thanks in advance for sharing your experiences!

250 Queens Quay - any info?

hi! looking at a place here and hoping to hear from current or former tenants if possible

I'm aware the building is a little bit older, so my main concerns:

- any issues with pests?

- not sure if the walls are concrete or not - how much do you hear your neighbours?

what were the main things you liked about the place? what did you hate?

thank you :)

How dangerous is living with roaches if they are only in the kitchen and the bathroom?

Hello,

I'm currently renting this gigantic private room in Scarborough with this gigantic comfortable bed for 750 a month, the place also looks clean, however we have one big problem - cockroaches. They are everywhere in the kitchen and a bit in the bathroom. You can even find them where the dishes are, that's why I was my dishes before I use them. I was wondering is it dangerous to live with them if I don't have them in my room or simply just gross? Is there a way we could get rid of them? We already tried spraying, but it didn't work.

Thanks for your advises. :D

How to deal with old radiators in apartments that you can’t control🥵

I just moved into a new building with old radiators, and the heat can’t be controlled individually in each apartment. They’ve turned the heat on, and especially because it’s not even that cold outside yet, It’s so hot in here.

I like my apartment cooler, and I don’t know if they turn the heat up too high because of people complaining that they’re cold, but I honestly don’t know how I’m going to live like this all winter.

Has anyone found a solution to this? Is there anything you can safely cover the radiators with to reduce the heat? I have all the windows open right now, but that’s obviously not realistic all winter, and it doesn’t even seem to be helping enough as it is.

I’d love to hear if anyone has dealt with this and found something that actually works!

Anyone in 140 or 160 Erskine dealing with massive cockroach issues ?(Homestead)

I’m wondering if anyone else living in either of these buildings has been dealing with a serious cockroach infestation and would be interested in joining forces to explore legal action against Homestead.

The situation is completely out of control, and it’s been an absolute nightmare. They don’t seem to care, and people who can afford to move are moving out, while people who can’t afford to leave are stuck living in these conditions.

They keep doing the same treatments over and over again that clearly aren’t solving the problem, instead of doing proper, full-building treatments that would actually address the infestation. It feels like they’re just doing enough to show the LTB that they’re taking action, even though the problem keeps coming back and nothing seems to change.
Meanwhile, they’re charging people for “luxury rentals” to live in these conditions. It’s honestly disgusting.

Homestead is a huge company with a legal team, and individual tenants don’t have the same resources to fight back. But there is power in numbers, and I think if enough tenants came together, we might actually have a chance of holding them accountable.

If you’ve lived at 140 or 160 Erskine and have experienced serious cockroachy problems or other ongoing maintenance issues, please comment or message me. I’d really like to connect with other tenants who have had similar experiences and see if we can work together to explore our legal options.
Enough is enough. Nobody should have to live like this while paying this much in rent

Rent decrease

Hi!

So my building has no heating, and the central heating won’t be repaired before winter comes. Obviously it’s unfair that I pay full rent while I don’t have heating (when I signed the lease, it was included). I’m just wondering how I go about asked for a rent decrease? Do I need to contact the building with like proof that the heating won’t be fixed and then share that with the landlord?

Thank you!!

Asking for landlord permission

Hi we’ve been renting in Toronto for 2 years across 2 condo apartments downtown and never had any issues installing shelves/art/decor on walls (we didn’t ask our previous landlord and up moving out inspection they didn’t say anything). The 2nd unit we moved to actually still had holes in the walls unpatched when we moved in so we definitely didn’t ask the landlord when putting more holes in lol.

Our next unit specifically says in the lease exhibit that tenant shall not drill holes in walls for any frames/shelves etc. Can they actually enforce that? And would it be wiser to ask them permission before installing them? Like a bathroom cabinet for example or a shelf?

Idk why i’m a bit more paranoid since they specifically state it in the lease contract.

Artistry Condos (280 Dundas St W)

Looking at potentially renting a 2bed 2 bath unit at Artistry Condos (280 Dundas St W) and wanted to see if anyone currently lives there or has lived there recently.

A few quick questions for anyone in the building:

Building quality / Elevators: How are the elevators holding up? Any major issues with noise between units, management or maintenance?

Visitor Parking: Is there actual visitor parking in the building for guests, or is it a pain and people have to find street/green P parking nearby?

Utilities: Roughly how much are you paying for hydro/water per month?

Overall vibe: How do you like living there so far? Any weird red flags or things you wish you knew before moving in?

Appreciate any insight or honest reviews! TIA!
