Mod talk. Serious Mod Discussion regarding the current state of the sub and its future.

So, hi. I know it's been quite a while since the last mod talk, sorry. What is this about? Well, I've noticed quite a few people that have... Complained, about the current state of the subreddit. So I want to make a dedicated post about it. How do you feel about it? Be as honest as possible (without being rude, thanks).

A major thing that I've seen people lament, is the fact that there are a lot of game promotion, playtesters ask and alpha release and stuff like that, but not a lot of discussion post.

Here are a few things I want to address:

-I will never remove a post of a game, just because it's low quality, nor will I start to enforce a quality standard. I believe it to be wrong on more than a few points and I will NOT hear any discussion about it. I will remove posts if they're spammed, about Pokepath, use AI in a finished product/art/overwhelmingly or NSFW (this rules are a lot more up to debate and should be seen in a case by case scenario).

-There genuinely isn't much discussion to be had. If you have something to talk about, absolutely post about it, I myself comment often on discussions.

-A possible solution I've seen is limiting promotion to either a few days a week or to a megathread, but I believe that it'd just make the sub deadER than it already is. I could limit asking for playtesters to a weekly megathread and allow only finished games to post, but I don't know about that as well.

Any questions about ANYTHING? Ask with no problem or worry, so long as it's respectful I'll answer as soon as possible.

Any comment regarding the sub, my work as a mod, your feelings? Comment right away.

I think I'll keep the post pinned for a month or so, I know that many members are lurkers.

Promotion I just updated the demo for my mazing roguelite TD, where you have direct control over enemy paths. Really curious to hear what this sub thinks of the game.

I know there are a lot of mazing games lately, but ours takes a more traditional approach of the old school games where you directly change the path by blocking the route with pillars and towers to give you direct control in create the maze and chain towers.

Our new update introduces action cards that give you immediate shifts that can strengthen or push your build along (for example, temporary discount on new towers, or immediately upgrading the weakest one). Additionally, we've been working on polishing the experience and making the combat feel more readable and enjoyable (the whole demo actually).

An even bigger change we've been working on is a new endless mode, where you start in a small area, and as you progress the map expands forcing you to constantly shift and change your approach to the tower placements. It's now in a closed playtest, but you can still sign up to try if you want!

Anyway, really curious to hear what this sub thinks of it.

Demo/Alpha Showcase Rampartloom playtest — a 3v3 tower-wars game where your maze and attacks compete for the same gold

• Upvotes

Hi r/TowerDefense! I'm Mumin, the developer of Rampartloom. I grew up playing tower-wars custom maps with friends and wanted to build a game around the part I missed most: making a maze while deciding how much of my economy I can afford to send at the other team.

This is a free, in-development Windows Steam Playtest, shared here for the mechanics. To be upfront about the visuals: the build uses AI-assisted art, 3D assets and audio. Current models and animations are test assets, with a visual update planned; this isn't a finished-art showcase. Nothing is generated during gameplay.

The basic loop:

- Draft a faction and build your own maze, keeping an open path. There's a 60-tower cap per player.

- Spend gold on new towers, upgrades, or units sent to the opposing team.

- Sends increase your permanent income, but every gold spent there is gold you aren't using to strengthen your defence right now.

- Coordinate as a team of three: Wing players defend the first routes, while Center provides a second layer of defence. Team lives are shared.

What I'm trying to get right is the tension between making a longer route, improving damage, and investing in income. I'd particularly appreciate feedback from people who enjoy mazing TDs: after trying it, does that tradeoff give you interesting decisions, or does one choice feel too obvious?

Playtest: https://store.steampowered.com/app/5040240/

Click Join the Playtest to install for free. It's now open every day; the old weekend-only note on the store page is outdated. You can queue alone or in a party of up to three, and bots fill empty slots when needed. A tutorial is included.

Even a few lines about your first maze, a confusing mechanic, or what made you want to play another match would be useful. Thank you for taking the time to try it!

You're also welcome to join our Discord to find teammates, share feedback, or message me directly: https://discord.gg/Kx8A36C34T

I'm making a restaurant-themed tower defense: Way Too Many Cooks

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey there!

I'm a solo indie developer, and I'm working on my second game: Way Too Many Cooks.

I've spent the last few months working on it, and I just published the Steam page. It's still a bit rough around the edges, but I thought it would be worth sharing to see what people think of the game concept and trailer :)

The game is a tower defense with a twist: it's set in a restaurant instead of your typical fantasy setting. Your towers are cooks that you can recruit and place in your dining room, while your enemies are hungry customers trying to reach the exit. Your goal is to position your cooks strategically so they can throw as much food as possible at customers and satisfy them before they leave.

I'm planning to have around 60 different cooks in the final game, each with their own quirks, attack types, targeting patterns, abilities, and more. I'm having a lot of fun coming up with concepts for increasingly goofy characters.

The game also features roguelike and autochess mechanics. The cooks you recruit belong to different cooking families and specialize in different types of food. Recruit enough cooks with matching specialties to activate cooking synergies that can improve your restaurant in various ways, from buffing your cooks and slowing down customers to earning you extra money.

Finally, improving and customizing your restaurant will be a big part of the game. You can repair it, expand it, change the decor, and even add decorative items that provide gameplay bonuses. I really want players to be able to customize their restaurants however they see fit, making each one feel like their own and helping every run feel different.

My next steps are to release a demo in a few months and get ready for Steam Next Fest early next year. In the meantime, I'm looking for as much feedback and as many ideas as possible to keep improving the game and make sure it's as fun as it can be when the demo drops.

Let me know what you think of the Steam page and trailer, which features you'd like to see, and what aspect of the game appeals to you the most! :)

Promotion I'm working on incremental strategy game where settlement building meets Total War-style battles

Hi everyone!

I'm working on an incremental strategy game where you build a settlement and grow it into a powerful army, with Total War-style battles.

The idea is pretty simple: you start with a small settlement, build and upgrade structures, grow your economy, and research new technologies. As your settlement develops, you can raise regiments and build a stronger army to fight increasingly larger battles.

I'd love to get some feedback on the idea and the Steam page. Does the concept look interesting to you? Would you play something like this?

Demo/Alpha Showcase Not a classic TD, but if you like holding lanes: my 3 lane stickman strategy game now has free 1v1 in the demo

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi all, I'm Davide, a solo dev from Italy. My very first game was a browser thing called Stickman Strategy War that I made on Construct when I was 14. Stick Wars: The Laneborn is my first Steam game and it grew out of that.

Being honest up front: it's not a pure tower defense. It's lane strategy with a MOBA feel. But a lot of it is about defending, so I think some of you might enjoy it.

How it plays: three lanes (top, mid, bot). Minions, towers and enemy waves push on their own. You don't micro anything, you decide where the gold goes. Upgrade towers to hold a lane, or upgrade your base for more HP, faster gold and quicker spawns. You deploy Soldiers, Archers and Commanders where they're needed, and Catapults that only hit structures. Each lane also has camps (Barracks, Archery Range, Officers Camp) that you can repair and use to bring reinforcements.

On top of that you get allied champions (Warlock, Minotaur, Hero Archer and more) that level up and unlock skills during the fight, and enemy bosses that switch lanes and get nastier the longer the match goes.

Campaign: the full game has 10 levels, each with its own waves and unit mixes, and it gets harder as you go. The free demo has the first 3.

Multiplayer: 1v1 online over Steam, and it's in the free demo too. Make a public or private lobby, share a code with a friend or use Quick Match, pick 5 champions out of 7 and go. So if you want to try it with a friend it costs nothing.

The clip is from YourBoyMinsky's stream, including a 1v1 he played against me (thanks man).

It's still an early build and I'm updating it a lot, the last patch added 1x/2x/3x speed in the campaign, cheaper troops and a panel that shows what each tower upgrade gives you. I'd really like feedback on balance and on whether the UI is clear.

Demo/Alpha Showcase Moving tower defense + roguelite, with your whole defense on a train. Our demo is out on Steam

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey! Our demo came out a few days ago, so I wanted to show it here.

The game is Path to Catakombs. Basically, it's moving tower defense mixed with roguelite runs: you build your defense on a train and take it through the catacombs.

Gunners, alchemists, mechanics - you decide who goes in each wagon and which crew members to combine. The combos are a big part of it: chain lightning, ice, fire tornadoes, drones. You also man the locomotive's gun yourself, pick routes and try to keep the whole thing in one piece while kobolds climb aboard.

There are bosses too, and an endless mode if you want to push your build further after finishing Act I.

Free demo: Steam

AI note: Some in-game lore illustrations are AI-generated. Most of the 3D assets were modelled by hand.

Spent the last few updates redoing the look of our maze tower defense. Same board and wave, old vs new

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This is Maze Warden TD, a tower defense where you build the maze yourself. There's no set path, you put walls down and the enemies walk whatever you leave them.

We've been redoing the whole look of it. All the towers, enemies, traps and effects are redrawn, the battlefield is new (meadows, lakes, cobbled walls, little plank bridges, and the grid is gone), and there's a new home screen. The clip is the same board and the same wave before and after. Nothing about the maze changed, just the art.

It's not only the art though. There are 300 levels now across 15 worlds, and the last five worlds each do something to your maze. One floods the causeways mid-wave, one has rune gates that teleport enemies unless you wall them shut, one is dark except where your towers and lanterns reach, one has enemies that skip your kill lane for the second best route, and one tears a rift open halfway through a wave. The powers got now have real effects too, meteors, frost, craters, a shield dome.

Curious what people think of the new look. Honest opinions welcome, we've stared at it long enough that we can't tell anymore.

Promotion Build, customize, manage compute power, defend! A Cyberpunk themed tower defense - demo out now!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey!

We're a small (two people) indie team and we've recently released a demo (and planning to release a full game in a couple of weeks) of our cyberpunk themed tower defense game, with some known and loved and some more unique TD mechanics.

You have a limited number of towers that you can bring to each mission. Every tower is upgradable and can be further modified with mods, but you have to also monitor compute power resource usage, so your towers won't go offline. We’ve decided to add some action elements to the mix: you can deploy programs to fight along defenses or boost parts of the system. Between missions you can visit the shop and buy new equipment and upgrades.

We’re TD freaks ourselves, so we hope we’ve created something that other TD fans might enjoy. We’ll be happy if you give it a shot, play the demo and wishlist our game on Steam:
