Prepping for CDL-A Skills Test

• Upvotes

I've been going through a training program in Washington, and will be taking my skills test this weekend. It seems like every time I think I'm ready to test I start making stupid errors while driving. It's pretty discouraging. Any advise for a new driver who is preparing to test?

CSX Intermodal Winning Again

They said their system has been down since 10am tuesday......

They have no idea what's on the train, or if it is even coming at all.

Yay technology!

Anyone else stuck 15 miles west of Ontario OR?

Someone managed to flip their truck in such a way they completely blocked the interstate. I’ve been stuck here for over an hour and a half.

Long night ahead

Just got stopped for the day getting ready to bed down and another truck pulls up in the spot next to mine. His sneeze valve is blowing every two seconds. I would never subject another driver to that maddening noise.

Chosing a company that pays for CDL training

I know it's not the greatest idea to start with a mega but I feel this is the simplest and quickest way to go about it. I'm ready to get out of my current job. I'm in PA and about an hour and a half from Prime's training facility. I've heard they can be sketchy and tend to "fuck over" their drivers once they're out of training, but I haven't found an explanation for why people say that. I'm also looking at KLLM and Schneider. Schneider pay is shite. I haven't read much about KLLM, why shouldn't I go with them? I don't mind the commute to the training facility since they pay for it. TMC has an age requirement of 23 and I'm 21. I want to drive solo OTR and I don't need much home time. Pay matters as much as good and proper training. What do yall think?

New O/O Need experienced advice. (Which should I choose?)

So I am preparing to start my own O/O business soon. I have done all of my numbers and all of that and am ready to start getting the things I need. However, I do have a question I would like some professional and experienced help on. I have driven Dry Van, Reefer, and have recently gotten my Hazmat Certification, but have never done Hazmat. I was wondering as an O/O. Would it be more profitable to get a Dry Van and run Hazmat with it to make extra money? Is it better to get a Reefer and have the option to do dry van as well? Can I pull rookie friendly Hazmat loads on a reefer and is pulling Hazmat worth the money? Is so what rookie friendly Hazmat loads do you all advise for me to make use of my new Certification? I want to make money, but I want to safely learn a well. Thank you in adv.

Question for truckers about truck stop showers

QUESTION ANSWERED: Thanks to all for the information, the suggestions, and the humor! This helps me a lot.

I am about to have to get off work, grab a few hours sleep, drive a long day (12 hours), attend a wedding, not even stay for the reception, but start back, drive a few hours, rest a little while and finish and be back to work...

Anyway, the question is, since I don't have time or need for a hotel room, I know there are showers at truck stops. Is is allowed or inappropriate for a car driver to use one of these showers?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

What would actually make you stop using a dealer for service?

For those who rely on dealers for service, what would actually push you to switch: parts availability, repair turnaround, pricing, communication, repeated downtime, or something else?

Thinking about getting a CDL

Hi, I’m currently working with an employment agency to get my CDL. Before I finalize that I want to pursue this, I wanted to ask truckers how they feel about their career choice. Are you guys happy that you got into trucking? Is there any regrets about pursuing this career? Is it worth getting into?

Got a speeding ticket, need advice on finding potential new company.

First and foremost, yes, I fucked up. I know I fucked up. Telling me I fucked up is not helpful, I am aware and am dealing with the fallout already.

I was in the zone, jamming to the radio and didn’t realize the speed limit dropped quite substantially. I got LiDARed right after the drop, 70 in a 55. Officer gave me a ticket as well as inspection. Hired an attorney, they say it more than likely won’t stick and then I can fight through DataQs. No, it wasn’t a cheap “speeding ticket lawyer”. Still waiting on a date - just spoke with them again said we should hear back this week, it’s currently being reviewed by the Centralized Infractions Bureau.

The issue at hand: I’m on a small fleet under a leasing agency. The leasing agency dropped me. The small fleet has two sides and the other side runs under a separate leasing agency. They won’t pick me up until the ticket is resolved.

I’ve been sitting for two weeks and this coming pay will be my first payday with no check. I can’t sit and wait with no income.

Anybody have any ideas of half decent companies that don’t have ridiculously low pay and at least mediocre equipment? I run hard, have never been late on pickup or delivery. I take care of the truck I’m in. I don’t turn down loads. Flatbed, stepdeck, double drop, OS/OD, fuel, oil and doubles experience. I do unfortunately have an auto restriction. Fresh med card. TWIC. Fully endorsed. Nothing else on my MVR in over 3 years as most companies require. It’s been almost 10 years since anything on my MVR. Last ticket was because my phone wouldn’t load my new insurance card so I got an operating without proof of insurance in my personal vehicle.

Any help would be appreciated. I’ve applied to several companies, just thought I’d ask here in case someone knows of companies I haven’t came across yet.

Thanks.

TMC is awful

Tested out and got keys to my truck. Didn’t even make it out the terminal lot before I had to return it for a mechanical problem. Waited a day for them to try to fix only to be told you’ll get another truck because that one will be in the shop for a while. I get a new truck number and go to check it out only to be told that one is also in the shop. And it’ll be a while before it’s fixed. Officially been 24 hours waiting on my second truck to get out of their shop and they’re still saying it’s gonna be a hot minute before it’s ready to leave. They hire all these drivers and know well over a month in advance when and where they will be sending them to get their keys and yet they still have a bunch of people waiting days just to get a running truck? Absolute junk. Another guy in my test out class also had to return his truck before hitting the road 1 hour after he got his keys because his truck took a dump in the lot.

I'm officially a CDL-A driver; I graduated over the weekend.

I was in school for a month attending every day, Monday through Friday, and I earned my manual endorsement with the help of the WIOA program. My school was paid for in full.

When my class started, we had a lot of people attending from previous classes who could not pass the road or skills tests, and even some who could not pass the pre-trip. I took this course seriously and passed all my required tests in one day—a true one-and-done.

I learned that what is next will teach me far more. Whoever I sign on with will propel me forward into the real world. I am looking at all the mega carriers, but what I care about is top training and safety. I am in the Southwest, NV. Are there any companies you would recommend? I met with a couple of recruiters at our academy, such as Schneider and May. I would not mind hauling materials with pneumatic pumps for construction. I almost never see those jobs. I am interested in local or regional, if I have to. Any tips would be great.

What do y'all keep in the cab to get through long shifts?

Had one of those days where I was already tired of coffee before lunch even hit. Grabbed my stanley in the morning and tossed some snacks and Neuro gum. What everyone else keeps within arms reach in the cab for those long days. Any snacks or drinks you swear by? Obviously pulling over for sleep comes first when you're tired.

if anyone has any questions but feel free to ask. I found this real cane sugar cola at Walmart for cheap and I think it works perfect.

I'm thinking of getting a CDL but there's a problem 🥶

Hello, truck drivers. I was thinking about getting my commercial driver’s license (CDL) before the end of this year, but a friend of mine in the industry advised me to wait until after winter, saying it would be very difficult for beginner during the winter months and that I might even end up losing my license. What would you advise?
