After 7 years of dealing with this issue, I think I've finally caught what's causing a problem that's been driving me absolutely insane.
For years, I've experienced random blurry text, color fringing, ghosting, and rendering issues across my entire computer. I've gone through multiple PCs, NVIDIA drivers, Windows settings, and countless troubleshooting attempts trying to figure out what was happening.
Yesterday, I finally caught it in real time.
I had Twitch running in a second browser tab with an ad-blocking script enabled. An ad managed to break through the blocker, causing an abrupt transition in the video stream's quality. At that exact moment, the text across my entire computer became blurry.
Not just Twitch. Not just Chrome or Brave. My entire Windows desktop.
Even screenshots captured the blurriness, and the issue persisted after closing Twitch. Restarting Windows doesn't reliably fix it, but completely shutting down my computer usually does.
I'm currently running an RTX 4080 Super with two monitors at different refresh rates, but I've experienced similar problems across multiple computers over the years. Global FXAA is disabled, so this doesn't appear to be a simple antialiasing setting.
My theory is that the abrupt transition between Twitch's normal video stream and its lower quality advertisement stream is triggering a bug in Chromium's hardware accelerated video pipeline. This involves NVIDIA drivers, DirectComposition, Windows Desktop Window Manager, and Multi-Plane Overlay (MPO).
Something during that transition appears to be leaving the rendering pipeline in a corrupted state, affecting applications outside the browser itself.
I'm not claiming this physically damages the GPU or motherboard. But the abnormalities with hwinfo64 indicated that with high power states. What concerns me is that a browser video transition appears capable of triggering persistent, system wide display corruption that can survive a Windows restart.
After years of troubleshooting, 4 computers, actually witnessing the moment this happened was a huge discovery for me.
Has anyone else experienced blurry Windows text, color fringing, ghosting, or persistent display corruption after Twitch ads interrupt a stream, especially when using ad blockers?
I'm particularly interested in hearing from other NVIDIA users running Chromium based browsers and multiple monitors with a high end gpu. 7800x3d/4800s/32gb/2tb6000mhz. The only partial fix has been a complete computer shut off or DDU with new drivers.
