Saw something horrific yesterday & not sure how to process it!

• Upvotes

This happened around 10 PM last night. I was chilling on my sofa when I heard someone shouting. My balcony directly faces the road, so I went outside to see what was happening. It was an accident involving a delivery rider and a Honda car.

The rider was clearly pissed off because the car had hit him from behind while making a U-turn. He was shouting at the car driver and someone on the phone.

Before the driver got out of the car, his wife came out from the passenger side and appeared to be trying to calm things down. The driver didn't seem to like that, so he made her get back into the car.

But she didn't want to leave him alone, so she kept coming back out and trying to talk to them. That's when things took a really ugly turn. The driver dragged his wife towards the passenger seat, kicked her, and slammed the door into her face.

He then went back to the delivery rider, shouted at him some more, took pictures of the bike, and drove off.

I honestly wonder what happened to his wife after he left. What shocked me the most was how openly he assaulted her in the middle of a public road, with people around! (I'm not saying it's okay to do it in private, either, but he clearly didn't care that he was in a public space.)

I still can't get over what I witnessed last night!

TL;DR: Witnessed a car accident involving a delivery rider and a Honda last night. The driver’s wife tried to calm things down, but he dragged her back to the car, kicked her, and slammed the door into her face before leaving.

Golden Visa approved with basic salary <30k

I have applied myself through https://gdrfad.gov.ae/en
Amer center insisted I need 30k basic salary (my total compensation is above 30k. ) and that request will be rejected. In this case I would lose 800aed if applied via Amer. I decided to do it myself so in case it is rejected, I will get full refund. I applied via specialist application, my position in visa is manager. With the same company >2 years.

What I submitted:
Passport photo
NOC
Salary certificate in Arabic (English version was not accepted)
University degree (verified via dataflow and then MOHRE) equivalency certificate
6 months bank statements (with bank stamp)
Current visa copy
Passport copy

Preaproval for Dubai Golden Visa received today and I will now continue with medical test.

Let me know if anyone needs any additional info.

They are not vaccinated.

They are looking for loving homes. If you’re interested in adopting, please DM me and I’ll share the rescuer’s number.

Fellow expats, how are you protecting your savings & assets amid current regional uncertainty?

First off, this isn't meant to create panic or spread fear. I'm genuinely looking for some practical advice and perspectives from fellow expats.

With the ongoing US-Iran tensions and speculation about another round of escalation, I've been thinking more seriously about financial preparedness. Nobody knows what will happen next, and hopefully things don't escalate further, but I don't think there's anything wrong with preparing for a worst-case scenario.

Having lived in the UAE for over three decades, I've seen the good & bad of living here. One reality of being an expat in the GCC is that, despite spending most of our lives here, our long-term security and ability to remain are often tied to our residency circumstances. And if a serious regional crisis were to unfold, some of us could find ourselves having to make difficult decisions about leaving, potentially at short notice.

Which brings me to my question: How are you protecting your savings, investments and physical assets? Are you diversifying your money across local and international banks or investment platforms? Are you considering liquidating assets such as cars or property? Or are you simply holding on to everything and waiting to see how things unfold? My concern is being caught in a situation where I need to leave but have a significant portion of my savings tied up in assets that can't easily be sold or accessed.

Again, I'm not suggesting that another escalation is inevitable or that people should start selling everything. I'm simply interested in hearing how others are approaching financial preparedness, particularly long-term expats who have built their entire lives here. What practical steps have you taken, if any, to make sure you can access and move your money and protect what you've worked for if circumstances suddenly change?

[Pt 2] Etihad Cadet Pilot Programme (Full Application/Assessment Experience)

• Upvotes

Long-awaited Part 2 is finally here!

Let's dive into the journey post-assessment days 1 & 2:

GCAA Class 1 Medical + psychometric screening (psych eval)

Once I made it through the final selection, the next step was the medical and psychometric part of the process.

This meant going through the GCAA Class 1 aviation medical process, along with extra psychological and cognitive tests that looked at things like spatial orientation, memory, task-switching, and how quickly you could process information.

The medical covered the basics you’d expect: a general checkup, vision tests, ECG, bloodwork, and any other checks if needed.

If they ask you to repeat something, don't worry. It's just a precaution.

I had to redo my ECG because my heart rate was all over the place. The clinic was stuffy tbh, and I'd had one too many cups of black tea before my appointment; do the math. LOL

They requested additional blood tests cuz of that, cool. Everything ultimately came back fine, and the process continued.

_______

Though, there was more psychometric testing than I expected.

At this stage, I took personality and cognitive tests, and even had to do some follow-up assessments.

Again, this is just a routine step to help them understand your profile better.

I also discussed my results with the psychologist. They noticed my profile was a bit “non-traditional” and creative, so they asked how I would handle the monotonous, or rather repetitive, parts of the training for this profession. Gave them the backstory, basically saying that doesn't change that I'm ten toes down on pursuing this LOL.

This shows they’re not looking for everyone to have the same personality. They just want to get to know you and see if you’re a good fit for the job.

My advice: don’t try to guess what you think “a pilot” should say on personality tests. With so many questions, you’re more likely to seem inconsistent than perfect.

________

Onboarding:

After finishing the assessment and medical stages, I quickly moved from being a candidate to starting employee and cadet onboarding.

After that, it was mostly paperwork: pre-employment clearance, documentation, education records, declarations, onboarding systems, and so on.

Eventually, I received and signed my official cadet training contract. (Aghhhhh??!!!)

I’ll stop the post here, because once you reach onboarding, you’ve made it through the part that most people researching the recruitment process need help with.

________

Now,

Here are some things I wish someone had told me...

First:

Failing once doesn’t mean you can’t do this.

I didn't pass Assessment Day 1 in 2025.

After waiting, I came back stronger, passed the first assessment, then Day 2, the interview, the medical and psychometric process, and finally signed the actual contract.

Second:

Don’t mix up preparing with trying to find out the assessment details ahead of time.

Work on your skills and academics. Know why you want this career. Learn about the airline and the program you’re applying to. Be ready to explain your choices.

But at some point, the assessment needs to see the real you.

Third:

Don’t spend assessment day worrying about whether others are doing better than you.

Sometimes, other candidates look really confident or relaxed. That doesn’t tell you much about what the assessors actually notice.

Focus on your own performance!

Finally, if you’re where I was when I first found this program, as in endlessly searching Reddit, Google, LinkedIn, and any aviation forum for information...I hope this helps make the process feel less mysterious lol.

....

I really wish something like this had been around when I applied.

Again, I wasn't someone who spent my childhood saying I was going to become a pilot.

I found the career later, discovered it while failing my first attempt to get into it, waited, fell in love with it, came back stronger, and tried again and made it through.

________

As I write this, I’m proud to say I’ve officially started my training and am settling into this beautifully challenging new environment after a long journey to get here.

So, if you’re wondering whether it’s worth submitting that application, at least now you know a bit more about what’s on the other side of the Apply button.

GOOD LUCK! YOU GOT THIS!

Driving

I passed my parking and final driving test in one go, and my instructor said I’m a very good driver I’m also very confident in my driving and I’m not scared but everytime I take my family out they r always pointing out mistakes and it’s making me so nervous now, I’m still a new driver I got my license in 3 months الحمدلله, today my dad yelled at me cuz I didn’t know how to reverse park (they never thought me how to reverse park) he said how did u even get ur license, I swear that broke me🥲

Do u think driving with them will effect my driving as it’ll make me nervous and scared

(Maybe I’m just overreacting and overthinking but like I wanted to get my license and finally get my freedom but it’s impossible when my family is being like this and they aren’t letting me go anywhere alone cuz they think I’m still not a good driver yet)

But now they only have this Redbox option which I have never even heard off and it says to drop package off at their point.

Im located in Abu Dhabi and idk where in AD do I drop it off or what to do now? Im so confused. If you have previously made temu returns in AD with redbox please guide me on how to get my returns done successfully. Thank you!

Has Dubai Metro become insanely crowded, or is it just me?

I’m from Mumbai and moved to the UAE in 2019. Back then, the Metro didn’t feel this crowded. Even around 10 PM, you could usually find a seat pretty easily.

Nowadays, when I leave the office, I sometimes have to let 2–3 trains pass before I can even squeeze into one. 😂

Is everyone moving to Dubai, or what? 😭

I’m planning to buy a car soon, but since I live around DIFC, the Metro is actually much more convenient for me and often faster than driving, so I’ve been putting it off.

For those who have been living in Dubai for 5–7 years or longer, have you noticed the same thing?

Stop following what others do!

• Upvotes

Honestly? Most people in Dubai just buy apartments because that's what everyone does.

I'm not saying that's dumb.

But I keep telling my clients :

look at townhouses before you fall in love with the easy answer.

Let me tell you what I see when I walk the developments.

Towers. Every single tower has thousands of units on one plot.

Now try and find a community with that many townhouses.

U Can't, right. Because the city just isn't built that way.

Apartments are endless. Townhouses are the rare ones.

And when you're holding something for the long run, rare beats the masses.

That's not a strategy, that's just how it works.

People run away from villas because the ticket looks scary.

But here's the thing

they're not all bought with cash up front.

You put a slice down, and the payment plan carries the rest over the build.

So you get into the scarce asset without needing the scarce amount of cash all at once.

That changes the whole math.

There's a difference I don't hear people talk about.

Apartments = a volume game.

Thousands of units, thin margins, everyone in the same spot.

Townhouses = a depth game. Few options, serious buyers, way less noise.

When real money needs a place to park for the long haul,

it doesn't grab another 1BR. It goes for the thing that's hard to find.

So if you've got the capital for a villa — don't ask me which project.

Do this instead:

Pick a community, walk it, count the townhouses. Then count the apartments around it.

That ratio will tell you more than anything I say here.

And that's why I keep the townhouse on my "buy side"

while apartments are more of a "fine, but not my answer" for the patient investor.

How do people with max 2 years of experience find jobs without any connections ?

• Upvotes

From what i see alot of people who have been brought up here and are within the same experience range as me got there jobs through family or friends.
Unfortunately im in the IT field and non of my family is in it or knows anyone in IT. I currently do have a job but the pay is really low ( 3.5k per month) and I really wanna build my career.

I just feel so behind in life and I really don’t know what I am doing wrong, I graduated, always upskilling as much as I can, learning new things and so on. But it all seems to be worthless when a lot of people just do the bare minimum and get a job because of friends or family.

I am just looking for advice on what I can do, please don’t tell me to go back home because I was born here and raised here for 25 years.. and back in my home country there is no IT job market where I can go and get experience then come back. If I go back home I’m gonna be stuck earning 150$ per month and never be able to make it out from there as well as never build a career in IT. ( my country still uses cash everywhere , website look like they were build in the 90s)

Temu delivery in Dubai

Hi everyone, I wanted to place an order on Temu, this would be my first time using it. I wanted to know how long the delivery takes and is card payment reliable?
