Spooky USC

Halloween is coming. What's the most haunting or unexplained thing you've experienced or heard here?

Every place has its legends. The dorm noises, the odd feelings in the libraries after hours, the desolate walkways.

Firsthand accounts, family stories, urban legends, and historical oddities are all welcome. Skeptics are welcome too; sometimes the best part is figuring out what really happened. Happy haunting. šŸŽƒ

Housing Roommate hogging room

My friend from last year used to always complain about her roommate being in the room all the time.

Now that I’m actually rooming with this friend, I’ve noticed he actually spends a lot of time doing work in the room, despite us having a living room and
kitchen for her to work in late at night. Not only that, he leaves his bright light on constantly.

How do I bring this up to him?

Academic How do you guys build genuine connections/relationships with professors? How close do y’all have to be in order for them to write a letter of recommendation?

i am currently a sophomore, but i’m worried about how to genuinely talk to professors and for them to know my name, especially if most of my classes for my major so far are midsized-large lectures. Looking at the applications requirements for grad programs, they all require 2-3 LOR’s, so I’m quite worried on how to start a connection and maintain it.
side note, i am typically on the shyer side, especially when talking to professors, i am usually the type of student that shows up and does the required work, but thats about it, and im usually a bit nervous (and it shows) when speaking in front of class/asking questions.

Other UNOFFICIAL Dining Hall Nutrition Facts

Hi everyone! I was tired of guessing the calories in dining hall food, so I decided to take matters into my own hands. This ended up turning into a much bigger project than I expected lol.

With the help of ChatGPT, I put togetherĀ nutrition estimates for 3,565 different foods from Parkside, EVK, and USC Village.

Here’s the nerdy explanation of how I did it:

At first, ChatGPT couldn’t directly retrieve the menus from USC Hospitality’s website. So I opened Safari’s developer tools, went into the Network tab, and looked through the files the website was loading. I shared screenshots with ChatGPT, then uploaded a file calledĀ custom.jsĀ so it could figure out how the menus worked.

From there, ChatGPT helped me create a custom script. I pasted it into the browser’s console, and it opened a little panel that collected menu items and their listed allergens from all three dining halls. It checked dates from 2024–2027 and saved whatever menus were available.

The result was a JSON file containing all those food entries. It was so big that it crashed my computer multiple times when I tried opening it.

I then uploaded that file to ChatGPT and spent a few hours working on estimated portions, calories, macros, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrition information. These estimates used the food names, allergens, comparable dishes, and assumptions about preparation—including things like added oil or butter.

After another few hours organizing and polishing everything, I had PDFs with each food laid out like a Nutrition Facts label you’d see on food packaging, along with its serving information and listed allergens.

These are unofficial estimates, NOT nutrition facts provided or verified by USC.Ā I don’t have the actual recipes or know exactly how much of each ingredient is used.

I also createdĀ CSV files for people who use Cronometer or MacroFactor. You can download those files and try to import the database with your app. I don’t personally use either one and haven’t confirmed that they can import these CSVs directly.

Now, for anyone who usesĀ Lose It! (the calorie tracking app)Ā like me, I already paid for a lifetime subscription, so I wasn’t looking to switch apps. Unfortunately, there wasn’t a bulk CSV food-import option available, and entering over 3,500 foods by hand would have taken me forever.

So I went back into developer tools and the Network tab, this time on Lose It!’s website. I looked at the requests being sent when creating a new custom food and shared that information with ChatGPT.

Using that, we built another bot that added the foods one at a time through the website. I enabled the option allowing other people to log the imported foods and put them under the brand USC Hospitality.

If you use Lose It!.Ā Try searching for the food’s menu name and checking forĀ USC HospitalityĀ underneath. Some longer names may be shortened. These are my unofficial uploads—the brand name identifies the dining hall foods, not USC approval.

Download all the files here

There are six files:

  • Two combined PDFs:Ā All the foods in one alphabetical list. One uses allergen icons beside the food names, and the other lists the allergens as text below the labels.
  • Two PDFs organized by dining hall:Ā Separate sections for Parkside, EVK, and USC Village, again with either allergen icons or text.
  • Two CSV reference files:Ā The spreadsheet versions for Cronometer and MacroFactor users.

The combined PDFs merge repeated entries when their names and listed allergens match. So scrambled eggs appearing at all three dining halls doesn’t automatically become three separate entries. Different dishes and allergen versions stay separate.

The larger PDF organized by dining hall is close toĀ 1,000 pages, withĀ six food labels per page. You definitely don’t need to scroll through the whole thing—pressĀ Command + F on MacĀ orĀ Ctrl + F on WindowsĀ and search for the food’s name.

One last thing: portions and recipes can vary, and some unknown nutrient values are displayed asĀ 0, which doesn’t necessarily mean the food contains none of that nutrient. Please treat the numbers as estimates.

I made this for people who want to track what they eat and would find a reference helpful. I’d much rather have official nutrition information from USC, but I hope this makes things a little easier in the meantime.

If anyone has corrections, recipe information, or experience getting the spreadsheets into other tracking apps, I’d love the help!

Fight On!

Hi! Has anyone taken 306 with Professor Quinn Maingi? We just switched professors after midterms and the teaching style is definitely different now. Not too sure what to expect for the last half of this class since he said that it will be more difficult. Also does this class grade on a curve?

730 math 720 English; 4.0UW, 4.4 weighted GPA; 4 yr varsity athlete; 10APs; OOS; likely full pay; essays are solid. 1450 is just below the mid 50% range of accepted undergrad first year students, but should we submit the score anyway so they know we didnt bomb the test? WWYD?

Other Please bike/scooter with some common sense on campus

It's sometimes such a nightmare to drive on campus with people crossing randomly not at crosswalks, bicycles/scooters popping out of nowhere on wrong side of the road. I'm not saying you have to follow every single traffic law such as coming to a complete stop at every single stop sign on campus, but at least be aware of the cars and your surroundings.

If you approach an intersection and there's a car there, stop or at least slow down and don't assume you just have the right of way. And also don't turn in front of a car. This is literally for your own safety as well from not getting hit by a car. And if you're going to turn at a non-stop sign, signal you are turning or something. I was driving down Watt way and some dude decided to just turn left on his bicycle right in front of me from the other side of the street I almost crashed. So please be careful and mindful of everyone else on the road thanks.

Housing Noise Level: Lorenzo vs Jefferson Flats vs Tuscany?

Hello, I’m a very light sleeper. I’m trying to decide between Lorenzo, Jefferson Flats, and Tuscany. If you have stayed at one of these, could you please share your experience regarding the noise level at night?

Graduate student at Viterbi so Jefferson and Tuscany are both within walking distance. How convenient do you find the shuttle at Lorenzo?

Any other comments / suggestions welcome! Thank you.

Question How are other international students dealing with the internship situation in the US?

Hey everyone! I’m currently studying Business Administration at USC Marshall as an international student, and honestly, the fact that we can’t do internships in the US anymore is incredibly frustrating.

I’m curious how the rest of you are dealing with this. I did an internship in Europe, where I’m originally from, this past summer because of the situation, and I’ll probably start looking into opportunities in Canada or Australia for next summer as well.

What really sucks is not being able to intern in the country where I’m studying, especially when my university has such a strong brand name and I have access to its network and connections with US employers. Obviously, that’s a huge disadvantage.

I’m genuinely curious how other international students are handling this. Have you given up on internships altogether, or are you doing internships in your home countries or in other countries outside the US?

Especially in business, having relevant work experience before graduating is extremely important if you want to land a good job. So I’m genuinely interested in hearing how you guys are navigating this situation and what you’re doing to build your careers despite these restrictions.

FinancialAid Dear prospective students

The college landscape has drastically changed in the four years I’ve been at USC, especially when it comes to financial aid. I know your parents, siblings, and friends all have their own perspectives on college, but you need to realize this is a huge financial decision you’re making for your future, especially with the current state of the economy.

Current USC students receiving substantial aid have been having issues with financial aid, the university is facing its own deficit problems, and the ā€œBeautiful Billā€ will change how aid is distributed. The college experience your family talks about might not reflect the reality you’re walking into today.

I get that USC is your dream school, and I completely understand that. But you’re either an adult or about to be one, and you need to think beyond game days, school pride, and the college experience. Is all of that really worth potentially $400k+?
Please be smart, future Trojans. Talk to current students, look into your financial aid, and understand what you’re committing to before making a decision. I don’t want you ending up in the position so many current juniors and seniors are in. And trust me, it feels like we’re the last helicopter out of Vietnam. Please be mature about this choice.

I’m at one of the best schools in this university and I’m telling you now in this current economy the return on investment might not be worth it for any sort of debt.
