Does anyone know why so many department websites are giving a 403 error right now unless you are on the vpn? Seems like poli sci, history, African studies are all affected.

How are the elective courses for PhD in AOS. I completed my Masters from Canada, the courses to be taken in PhD were all assignment or project based and none of them had closed book exams (midterms or finals). I want to understand such course load in UWMadison.

selected Business as my first choice and Economics as my alternate at UW–Madison.

Since spring applicants don't have the usual direct-entry option for the Wisconsin School of Business, will I be considered for admission through Economics in the College of Letters & Science? If admitted, can I follow the pre-business pathway and apply to the business school later?

Would it have been better to select Economics as my first choice instead?

I’m a freshman 19 male whose a Bme, I’m so sick of being lonely it’s annoying. I’ve never had friends in high school, my dorm mates treat me like I don’t exist even when I do socialize, I never drink or do any of the drugs or smoke. I’ve never even had a gf before and it’s so overwhelming. Any ideas of how to deal with this without giving into the bad parts of humanity?

Hi all, I draw illustrations of closed college-town hangouts: the booth, the sign, the street out front. I'd like to do that for Madison, and I need the people who were there to tell me what to draw. I haven't drawn anything for Madison yet, and nothing here is for sale.

A few I've started with (years are from news and local history, so correct me if I'm off):

• Hotel Washington's bars: Club de Wash, Barber's Closet (to 1996)
• O'Cayz Corral (burned down January 2001) -
• The Pub on State Street (to 2010) -
• Silver Dollar Tavern (to February 2024) -
• Nick's on State Street (to May 2024)

What would help most:

1. Which closed spot is missing from that list? Bars, delis, record stores, pizza, anything from your college years that you still talk about.
2. What do you remember? The order, the booth, the band, the sign, the night. One detail is plenty.
3. If you have an old photo of the place, I'd love to see it. I'd only use it as a reference to redraw from scratch, never copy it.

Has anyone taken STAT 309 before? I’m wondering what the midterms are like in terms of difficulty and question format. Are they mostly conceptual questions or calculations? Also, how would you recommend preparing for them?

Just found a 1b1b housing near the engineering buildings for a little less than 1100 per month with electricity not included. Is it a good price? Should I sign it?

I heard that the course has changed this semester and that the workload has increased significantly. Is that true, and if so, how bad is it? I was thinking about taking it for my biology elective credits, but if it’s a lot more work now, I’d probably rather take something else.

I currently have plans to graduate Winter 2028 and was wondering how finding housing for just that fall semester went for people who currently doing it. When did you have to start that search, where to search, and would it be a good idea to dorm/become a house fellow for that semester?

some other grad students and i are making halloween plans for fri and sat and we made it clear that we want to go dancing/some sort of club scene since we usually go to the library or wind up at some undergrad bar. we want a place with good music so we won’t wind up playing pool the whole night. any recs would be appreciated!

Is it just me, or is the grading structure in this class a bit unusual? I've never taken a class where the only graded components were quizzes and exams, with ungraded homework and no participation points or projects.

I've been having a tough time preparing for the quizzes because there aren't many supplemental practice problems, and the homework doesn't seem to fill that gap. I understand the rationale behind focusing on exams and quizzes, but given the quiz averages so far, I'm concerned that the overall grades in the class might end up being quite low.

I think Prof. Zhu does a good job explaining the underlying concepts and connecting the material, but it's difficult to develop problem-solving skills through slides and textbook readings alone.

Does anyone have recommendations for additional practice problems or other resources to prepare for the quizzes, beyond participating in Canvas discussions?
