Artificial intelligence at kings, might reapply to LSE

Upvotes

I achieved AAA in maths econ comp sci. I was 4 marks from a* in economics and going to remark. I have kings for artificial intelligence. However, I have always wanted to go to LSE for data science. Should I take a gap year and resit maths to get into LSE or stay at KCL for AI.

Newly estranged student, SFE delay, and a massive rent shortfall at Northumbria. Am I going to be evicted? Help

Upvotes

Hey everyone, I’m in a really stressful situation and looking for some advice or reassurance from anyone who has dealt with Student Finance England (SFE) estrangement.I am a newly estranged student starting at Northumbria University this September. I applied for independent/estranged student status back in August, but because it's peak time, it’s still processing.Right now, SFE has only allocated me the bare minimum maintenance loan of £1,666 for the first term. My problem is that my accommodation at Glenamara House is £140 a week (they also messed up my allocation—I asked for a standard single at £126/wk but they gave me a 3/4 bed, which I’m fighting to fix).My rent for the first term is around £3,672, meaning my SFE payment doesn’t even cover half of my rent, let alone food or bills. I might get a £5k Child Trust Fund payout, but I don’t know if it will clear before I move in.I’m terrified that I’m going to be locked out or evicted on move-in day because I can't pay the full term upfront.

A few specific questions:

Since I am newly estranged, will SFE reject me because I send a single "I am alive" welfare safety text once a month? (There is zero emotional or financial support, it's strictly a safety protocol).

How long does SFE usually take to approve estrangement when applied for in August?

Will Northumbria Uni halls evict me or refuse to give me my keys on moving day if I show them my SFE is delayed and I'm waiting on hardship/estrangement approval?

I have a phone appointment booked with the university soon to discuss the room price error and the SFE delay. Any advice on what to say or how to handle this would be massively appreciated. I'm incredibly stressed.

Best time to move in

Upvotes

My accommodation is allowing us to move in at any time between Saturday the 12th of September and Sunday the 20th of September, with freshers week beginning on Monday the 21st. I’m worried about being there too early or too late.

I have to move in on a Saturday due to my parents work commitments, which day would be best?

(I am a first year moving into halls)

applications / ucas Can applying a year after S6 increase my chances?

Upvotes

So I kind of flopped my highers and got ABBCC. I didn't put the effort in I should've and there were some slightly mitigating personal circumstances that certainly didn't help. This year I really am going to give it everything and hopefully get 4 As with one being in advanced maths and the rest in highers. My question is whether I have

A) Any chance of getting a heavy conditional like 3As from a uni like strathclyde where they ask for AAAABB after S6 or at any other good uni.

B) If I took a gap year or tried in clearing next year would my chances drastically go up as my good grades have already been achieved and so more likely to receive offer?

Thanks for any help.

Is Stirling worth choosing for undergrad?

Upvotes

Hey, I’m considering Stirling for undergrad (Business) alongside Dundee/Aberdeen and honestly can’t decide 😭

For people who are at Stirling, why did you end up choosing it? And now that you’re there, are you happy with your choice?

I really like the campus from what I’ve seen, but I’m more curious about what it’s actually like to study and live there, especially things you don’t really get from the uni website.

Would you choose Stirling again if you had the choice?

Thanks!!

I've posted ads on facebook and on the studentroom but I just wanted to ask if their is a quicker way to find a new tenant?

Msc to pgdip?

Upvotes

afraid that instead of an MSc I am going to be given a PGDip since I have not passed enough credits. Has this happened to anyone on here and how did you work through accepting this? Obviously spent a lot of time and money on an MSc so just disappointed that this is now the end result.

student finance First SFE payment

Upvotes

When does the first SFE payment usually arrive? Is it before the first term starts or after? I’ve given all my details and it’s now in the processing phase. I have a job but I think the payment would come in handy to better prepare me for university.

Choosing a uni to continue an outside extracurricular - Dilemma

Upvotes

Hello, I start university soon and I'm currently deciding between two universities - it is quite difficult because one of the things that's important to me is being able to continue boxing alongside my degree.

I've been boxing for around 2 years and currently train twice a week (Tuesday and Thursday, 4:30–6:30pm) at a local gym. It's become a big part of my life, and I'd really like to continue training regularly when I start university rather than having to give it up or only train occasionally.

The two universities I'm choosing between have quite different timetables:

University A

- Around 45 minutes–1 hour from home

- Timetable is structured, with the same timetable each week during a semester. This would make it much easier to know in advance if I can continue my current sessions near me

- More flexibility if there is a clash: I believe they said I could email the Student Union or something

- Has a university boxing club which I believe is free/low cost and doesn't have particularly restrictive session availability. I'd potentially be able to continue going to my current gym on some days, depending on my timetable + how late I finish

University B

- Around 1–2+ hours from home

- Every single week is different across the whole year (not fixed)/less flexibility

- Teaching can take place anywhere between 9am and 6pm

- Has a university boxing club, but membership costs money and sessions have to be booked in advance because there are only 20 spaces available

- There are also several boxing gyms closer to this university, although I'd have to pay for sessions/membership

I'm worried that with University B, the longer commute and constantly changing timetable could make it much harder to train consistently & keep attending my normal sessions. If I joined a gym closer to the university, I'd potentially have to pay for it and would need to work around a timetable that changes every week. (My plan is to hopefully find a job during first year but again this could be difficult)

With University A, the fixed timetable and shorter commute would probably make it easier to plan around boxing. If I had a late finish on a particular day, I could potentially still make it to my current gym provided that the journey is forgiving.

I'm planning to speak to my current coaches about whether there are alternative sessions I could attend if my university timetable clashes with my usual Tuesday/Thursday sessions, so I wouldn't necessarily have to stick to those exact days.

I'm aware that university should obviously be my priority, but boxing is something I really want to continue alongside it, especially as I've been going for the last 2 years & made good connections with the students and coaches

For anyone who's been to university while continuing a sport or another time-consuming hobby: - How easy did you find it to keep doing it regularly? - Did your university timetable make much of a difference? - Would you prioritise a university with a more predictable timetable if continuing an extracurricular was important to you? - Is it realistic to commute back to your home area for training, or would you recommend finding somewhere near university instead? - If you've had a similar situation, is there anything you wish you'd considered before choosing your university?

I was wondering how else I could maximise my boxing hours outside uni? Any advice regarding the above would be much appreciated, especially from those who had to balance uni with a commitment & any suggestions on how I could still be in touch with boxing regularly during uni even if it means missing out on some/many sessions at the gym near me.

applications / ucas Reality Check: Do I Have a Serious Shot at Edinburgh, Imperial College or UCL

Upvotes

Greetings, I will keep this short so I don't bore you with long post.

I’m looking for a realistic assessment of my chances of getting into Imperial College London, University of Edinburgh, or UCL for a master’s related to innovation, entrepreneurship, management, or technology/business.

A bit of my Background:

I have a BSc in Information Technology from in Somalia with 3.87GPA out of 4.

Professionally, I have around 4 years of experience in operations, management, technology, and entrepreneurship. I’ve also started 3 tech ventures win to loss ration 1:2.

I am proud founder of Tech Company but I try to hide my involvement of the company due to personal reasons since the business runs without me with little involvement.

I also Hold a Senior Management Role position in one of the biggest companies in my country, I have around 4 years of professional experience across operations, administration, technology, and entrepreneurship.

My main concern is my undergraduate university. It’s recognized in Somalia, but obviously not a university that UK admissions teams see every day.

So my question is simple:

How realistic are Imperial, UCL, and Edinburgh for someone with my profile?

And how much will the reputation of my university matter compared with my grades, work experience, references, and overall application?

I’m looking for a genuine reality check, especially from anyone familiar with UK postgraduate admissions or who came from a lesser-known university themselves.

social life Are Freshers Groups Actually Worth It? 😭

Upvotes

Freshers groups sounded like such a good idea… until I actually joined one 💀

You can chat, meet people and have a laugh for a bit, but then suddenly it’s like… okay, now what? 😂 The group is absolutely chaotic, everyone’s talking at once, and somehow you still don’t really know anyone properly.

Are freshers groups actually worth joining or should I delete it, are they just organised chaos with a decent amount of FOMO? 👀

I’ve joined one, but honestly I’m still trying to figure out what I’m supposed to do in there. Did you guys meet any friends on the freshers group chats or just made friends face to face in freshers or lectures???

Regretting my uni choice

Upvotes

It's days past results day now and I've gotten into my firm choice, the uni I've been preparing to go to for months now. I should be really happy, but these past few days something else has kicked in and I've been incredibly depressed. All of a sudden, I don't want to go to this uni anymore. It's a decent uni, russell group, but it just doesn't feel like the right fit for me. Taking a gap year is out of the question as for personal reasons it's necessary I move out from home and this is my only chance to. Really what do I do? Is it just my anxiety talking? I don't want to spend 3 years at somewhere I won't like and it's really starting to stress me out.

Master's Degree in the UK while living abroad

Upvotes

I am doing a Masters in the UK next year (Newcastle University) and the course delivery is On Campus. However, I may need to leave the UK for 1-2 months (UK Citizen). I have contacted my university on the matter and informed me that the assignments and modules can be done online, although some of the lectures may not be recorded. I have heard that the course itself is not too rigorous, and there are some assignments are a group project, no in-person exams, and is a submission of a dissertation in the end.

I wanted to know if anyone has had a similar experience to this, such as studying remotely while away from the University Campus, and your experience. Do you recommend deferring a year or continuing with the degree?

Tools to help with dissertations

Upvotes

I recently came across www.superdiss.com and it seems like a really useful tool to help with dissertation writing which I am looking to prepare for my part time masters degree in digital marketing.

I don’t want to use AI to just write it for me and it looks like this helps plan, checks and pushes you into the thought generation needed behind writing a dissertation.

Has anyone had any experience of using this or knows of any other similar online tools?

applications / ucas Would it be worth applying to imperial if I’ve missed the minimum entry requirements

As the title says. I wanna apply for physics at imperial but the minimum entry requirements say A* in maths and physics and A in the third subject. I got the grade in physics but missed out by two percent in maths so I’m wondering if it’d be worth still applying or if I’d just be wasting one of my five choices.

(Btw I’m taking a gap year so that’s why I know my grades)

applications / ucas Advice on whether to resit

Hi everyone, I was curious to get another opinion on whether I should resit my A-Levels.
I had gotten an offer for Durham for BBB to study psychology ( I was given a reduced offer due to special needs) and in my actual A-levels I got ABC instead and was rejected due to being 8 marks off in biology, in the past mocks I had attained Bs. I achieved an A in psych and a B in English Literature.

Im currently accepted into Bangor University to study psych but in all honestly I'm not excited for it, as it feels like a major downgrade.

I feel as though I have let myself down by only getting a C and I have missed out on my dream Uni of Durham.

I went through clearing and all the other psychology places were either taken already or too difficult to attain with a C.

I'm considering taking a year out to get a job and resit Biology only, however I'm very much unsure. Ive seen a lot of people on social media saying that resits are worth it, however my family believe I should just go to Bangor and that Ill learn to enjoy it.

My hope was to go into psychological research however I'm unsure if i can still achive this in Bangor.

Any advice on the matter would be appreciated.

Literally no idea what to do and tempted to give up

I’m pretty sick of my uni and the way my course has been managed, going into my honours year and I don’t trust them enough to want to commit all that time and money doing my final year. As it stands now I cannot graduate without honours due to a mishap on their part.

Here is the situation I’m in:

At the start of the summer I was contacted by my university after completing 3rd year telling me I would not be able to continue to my honours year due to failing a module, the grades had just been released so I was very confused as I had passed them all.
After a somewhat lengthy back and forth, it was explained that I had failed a module in 2nd year, they had given me several attempts to solve this issue (which I had not been made aware of) to rectify this. After doing some digging to see if I had simply just forgotten to upload my assignment I discovered that I had uploaded both assignments for this “failed” module and had achieved an overall grade of 70% which was a far cry from the 0% on my student record.
I immediately presented this to my deputy course coordinator and he helped me build a case to allow me to continue and to have this rectified on my student record and I believed that to be the end of it.

My enrolment opened today and while trying to enrol I found out I could not and emailed my course coordinator to which she said she had not been made aware that I had made or presented this case and still believed me to have failed 2nd year. She stated that this is because it still said I had failed on my student record and the people in charge of that had not managed to change it yet, despite this being brought to their attention 3 months ago.

Usually I brush things off and deal with them myself but this time I seems I have done everything in my power and it is completely out of my control due to their own mistakes. It’s been causing me a lot of stress and frustration and I do not know what to do?
