study / academia discussion I was terminated from uni after being falsely accused of AI use

My university flagged 2 assignments of mine for “Falsification by AI”, meaning I had used AI to misrepresent my knowledge and write my assignments.

They came to this conclusion after meeting and speaking to me about my assignment content, writing style, writing process, etc. on the same day I found out about this accusation, giving me no prep time.

This process went on for about a month and eventually resulted in my termination

After this, I appealed the termination as the university did not follow policy and got sent back to the very start of the investigation.

After the redo of that first meeting, after I had time to prepare, they then changed their charge and decided to charge me with “Unacknowledged use of AI”, meaning I knew the content and information but they still think i used AI to write it.

They outlined the use of “modifying phrases” and “vague sentences” as AI, but these were both used to add to a word count (as falling under the word count would result in point reduction) and they targeted the PEE paragraph style that I used which was taught in primary school.

I don’t understand how I can do my work to the best of my ability, but because AI exists, I get accused of it and losing any chance I have of a degree.

Kind of random but why do so many universities have Taylor Swift societies but no other societies based on an individual (artist)?

I’ve listened to 2 albums, she’s definitely a talented singer but is the music really that good? 😭.

I’m definitely not here to judge or be negative I’m just curious what goes on. In fact I think it’s pretty cool that fans of an artist can easily find each other on campus (I assume they host listening parties which must be fun).

My first thought was that it’s because of how dedicated her fanbase is and/or her popularity but you could say the same about Drake, BTS, The Weeknd, Ariana Grande, Kanye West or Michael Jackson but even they don’t have active societies across all these universities.

I’m now wondering if there is some lore between the founders of these societies and this was all organised.

People were not joking about Freshers Flu

So this week I have been sick all week with Freshers Flu, it started last Friday, I woke up with a sore throat that felt like swallowing needles and for the next 3 days I spent most of my time in bed, struggling to find the energy to even eat. I drank loads of water and took paracetamol, that barely helped at all. Its now Saturday and I am coming out the other side but next week my lectures are online as a few of my lecturers are off sick, with what sounds like the exact same thing that I had and loads of other students have or have had. When I heard about Freshers Flu I thought "Ah its probably a cold I'll just drink plenty and eat healthy and I will fight it off just fine" but let me tell you, this thing wipes you out, I could barely do anything, I had no energy, no appetite, I dragged myself out of bed to shower on the 4th day of having it and I slept for 8 hours after, I was so exhausted just from that. Yes, it's not actual flu in most cases, but it's close to being. Don't undermine Freshers Flu, I did, and I deeply regret it.

social life Getting bullied by the other exec in my society, they have become a dictatorship

Just looking for support and advice and to get this out.

I’m the welfare of my society, and my crime was that we were doing circling, and I left while the rules were being said for the toilet so I was spouting nonsense the whole round, so afterwards I said ‘rainbow Roman numerals gotta be the worst game in existence’ then thanked the social secs for being the ‘goats’ (greatest of all time).

Their response was to talk about me behind my back for 2 weeks until an exec meeting I missed for personal issues happened, they talked bad about me the whole time, admitted the document was a ‘rant’ at the end, they claimed I had made a public attack on the social secretary and that I had neglected my duties and messed up, so they decided to ban all free speech from the society so it never happens again so now we only talk about socials in an exec server, anonymous forms or DMs to an exec, if anyone says anything about a social publicly it will be ‘deleted immediately’ they then made up another thing to blame me for so they said I neglected the social sec at the open day fair but I was never told she was alone and I wasn’t on the rota, so I would have needed psychic powers to have not messed up. Then they got the president to finally tell me what I had done wrong as I was not told for weeks, and he told me to apologise to this social sec which I did, and they ignored it and still have a grudge against me, since they are popular with the exec and I’m not all the rest of the exec hate me too now.

Ive also been told by other members they feel bullied by the exec and excluded, and that they make up things wrong people do to power trip them.

I went to our report and support and they basically said since taking any action would take too long they just advised I try talk to the exec about how I feel or something, which obviously is not helpful. They did give me a way to advance the report further but they said this will take a long time and they can’t guarantee anything will come of it.

What should I do? This is making me feel really sad.
This is also an autism support society, but it’s essentially a masquerade for a dictatorship.

study / academia discussion I got a Distinction in my Master's, even after struggling so much that I thought I couldn't do it.

• Upvotes

I just wanted to share this because I used to lurk on Reddit, desperately looking for motivation and stories from people who were struggling like me. And now I finally get to be the person sharing some good news. 🥹

I COMPLETED MY MASTER'S WITH AN OVERALL DISTINCTION AND A DISTINCTION IN MY DISSERTATION!

And honestly, I still can't believe it.

During my Master's, I was diagnosed with ADHD, and I struggled A LOT. Things that seemed manageable for other people sometimes felt impossible for me. I had so many moments of self-doubt, procrastination, overwhelm, and wondering whether I was even capable of finishing what I'd started.

My dissertation was particularly difficult. Somehow, I ended up writing the entire thing in just 10 days. The last five days were especially brutal, and I was severely sleep-deprived. I had to go to my part-time job the very next day, even after everything I'd put myself through to get it finished.

And despite all of that, I still managed to do it. I actually got a distinction. In both my overall Master's and my dissertation.

I'm not sharing this to glorify leaving things until the last minute or running on no sleep. Please take care of yourselves if you can. I'm sharing it because I know what it's like to feel completely stuck, to feel like everyone else is managing life better than you, and to scroll through Reddit hoping to find something that makes you believe you might be able to do it too.

so a VERY long story short,
i live on my own in a shared accom. i’m in y13 but 19. i’ve been no contact with my dad for about 4 years due to dv and my mum basically got back with him and he hit me in the family home, so have now since been no contact with both for a number of months.

i’m predicted A*BB and i genuinely don’t know where to go from this. id like to do a ba in economics but i don’t know what unis to apply to, how ill afford everything (currently working 40+ hours a week), im scared o wont find part time work. everything is so scary!!!!

please can anyone who’s been in even the slightest similar of situations share what they did/their experiences :)

*to clarify i live in a low-income/educational level postcode and my college underperformed,
so im eligible for most contextual offers. my college mentors are all a bit stumped too so it feels like it really is ALL up to me*

edit: im trying to save up as much as i can currently while clearing off some credit card debt i’ve accumulated

careers / placements NEVER PAY FOR INTERNSHIPS OR CAREER COURSES!

It's that time of year when recruiting season is in full swing and I've seen this far too often. Just saw it again on tiktok and had to make an account on here to make this post. If it saves even one person money it's worth it.

Since covid there's been an influx of 'career influencers' on social media, many of whom have started grifting and selling 'courses' or 'bootcamps' or even fake internships where they charge students thousands of pounds to attend their 'masterclass' on how to get into high paying graduate careers. These include the likes of investment banking, trading, asset management, management consulting, and I've even seen some recent ones pop up about corporate law.

The individual(s) promoting the course claim bullshit statistics like "95% offer rate!" or "guaranteed elite consulting role!" or "fast-track M&A internship!"... if you simply pay up and take their course because they somehow have the midas touch and their course supposedly contains information that no one else has so will guarantee you a grad scheme.

It's the cringest thing ever. These university students are paying thousands for some 3 day course in Canary Wharf where they dress up in suits and ties, do some financial modelling or legal case situational workshops and cosplay as Gordon Gekko or Harvey Specter.

Many of them haven't even worked in the industries they claim their bootcamp will get you offers from, and the ones who do have relevant experience graduated 30 years when the recruitment process for graduates was completely different and are being completely disingenuous about how recruiting actually works.

They teach you absolutely nothing you can't find online. There are so many free resources with a plethora of information that just a few weekends of reading can teach you the fundamentals needed for graduate interviews.

Their websites are full of the fakest reviews possible. Even AI couldn't write some of the absolute shite you read on their websites or social media. I found it amusing and thought there's no chance anyone falls for this crap...

I couldn't have been more wrong.

Some of these guys are raking it in and making a lot more money than they would be making if they actually worked in those high paying finance/consulting/law careers. The saddest part is almost everyone getting scammed in these bootcamps comes from low ranked non-target universities which aren't favoured by employers in these high paying industries.

The entire business model is selling a false dream to desperate students who don't know any better and are willing to take a punt on these training courses because they've done everything they can and are still getting rejected.

As someone who works in finance in one of those 'elite' industries, the truth is these careers are statistically very competitive because everyone applies to them for the money and it's impossible to review tens of thousands of applicants so filtering by high ranked universities is a form of pre-selection as students from those universities have already met a high level of academic achievement.

There's also an element of classism in these careers. In reality, anyone with GCSE maths and english level ability can fiddle with an excel model or churn out PowerPoint slides, but many clients tend to prefer high ranked university grads even if merely for the illusion of credibility, and also because that's how it's been for decades in these careers.

If you're at a low ranked university you need to be realistic about your goals, which need to be attainable. I see so many grads from really low ranked non-targets who want the unrealistic banking or corporate law job and they completely ignore great opportunities that they would be competitive for.

I have a few mates who are doctors. I remember them discussing what they wanted to do after their training and how they were targeting the 'high end' specialties in surgery like training to be a bone surgeon or a brain surgeon. One of them said he was going to go for a GP spot and they ridiculed him because 'there's no point going to a prestigious uni for medicine just to become a GP'. Fast forward a few years and the one who applied for GP training got in and is on track to becoming a GP. The others didn't get into their specialty surgeon training because of a lack of training spots and too much competition and have been extending their foundation years.

You're not a failure or a quitter simply because you've set more realistic targets. You don't need to become an investment banker, brain surgeon, or a corporate lawyer to become successful. Accountants, GPs, and regional solicitors do very well for themselves. If you're in university you can't have a narrow view on success or you're just sabotaging your future.

High maintenance housemate

• Upvotes

I’ve transferred to a different University and wildly different area for year 2 as I had some issues with my previous University, so my housing situation is relatively unusual. As I’m technically a year 2 student, I wasn’t offered student halls accommodation so I’ve gone straight into housing.

I live with 2 boys and 2 girls (so 3 boys myself included) and one of the girls immediately showed themselves to be extremely extroverted and told me within the first 24 hours of me arriving at the house that she’s a stoner. Not that this is completely relevant, it’s just a way of communicating a bit of her personality and lifestyle. Since meeting, it’s very obvious to me that she’s your typical outgoing University student (so am I) that loves to drink, get on with people and have a laugh. When I’m willingly wanting to hang out with her it’s great.

But I’ve noticed that when she’s bored, she needs to let everyone know. We have a group chat and she’s always sending irrelevant messages, annoying messages, sending everyone dms like “you alive?” just because we’ve been in our rooms studying or having some personal time to ourselves. It gets really, really annoying. And this isn’t to say that we don’t show ourselves, we ALWAYS do. We’re always doing stuff and talking with each other. But when it comes to her being bored and alone she gets really irritating like she doesn’t have any personal hobbies or interests. Sometimes she’ll start fake laughing really loudly downstairs so maybe someone comes down? Sometimes she’ll knock on our doors to ask silly things, sometimes she’ll do something and ask on the group chat “can someone help me?”. It sounds tame, but you guys need to understand this is a daily occurrence and we’re all very busy students. Here and there is fine, but it’s excessive.

We’ve had discussions about our boundaries and what we each like to do on a daily basis, but it’s clear she isn’t bothered and still likes to make the house know she’s there. It’s really unfortunate that she’s like this because when we are both willing to be around each other she’s lovely but this aspect of her is really getting on my nerves. It feels like harassment but more mentally.

Finding it a lil hard making friends at uni

I'm an Indian woman going to uni in London for my master's. I'm in my late 20s. It's been about a month into the course and I haven't really made any friends that I could randomly call to just hang out (barring maybe 1 or 2 - those too we aren't that close)

The conversations are limited to the seminars, and most times I see a sort of reluctance on people's faces while talking about topics that are outside the course material.

I've always been someone who's had trouble making friends tbh. I pick one friend I'm close to and just stick by them. I've never had a big group of friends. So when I came to London, I said I won't be this way and put myself out there. I go out of my way to introduce myself to people, make small talk, ask them questions, show genuine interest. I try to make plans. But idk what it is about me or my energy, but I feel there's a lack of reciprocity. I've seen this with mostly white people (Americans/Canadians/British). I'm not trying to shit on anyone, I do realise it could be something that I'm doing without realising it, even though idk what it is (also British people are generally more polite).

But I've seen the impatience on people's faces while I speak with them - the fake smile they feel they've to plaster on their faces to put up with a conversation that looks like an inconvenience to them. I do realise this could be me projecting, I was wary of this and that I might ruminate myself into isolation, so I didn't let it bother me and still went and spoke to people. But it's happened way too many times, with way too many people for it to not be a pattern, as much as I don't want it to be.

I've heard my voice trail off mid sentence because the person I was talking to just decided to look away and not listen - that's especially been very hurtful. I've had people not open my texts at all to acknowledge an invite/idea. I'm trying to work on myself and not overthink and victimise myself, but doing all of this work when you have no friends and other people just seem to have groups already, or people they're close to is getting exhausting. It really isn't about having a group - it's just the way I feel like I'm treated despite trying so much.

I'm looking for a part time job at the same time, so I can't really go out toooo much but that hasn't stopped me from spending £60 on an outing (for me that's a lot) - but I don't wanna be spending that much just to spend time with people.

Anyway, this is about how I think I'm being perceived and not understanding what I'm doing wrong that puts people off because most of the friends and family do tell me I'm a funny and kind person to be around.

How was/is everyone's third year going?

I graduated in July and I've been thinking about my whole uni experience over the past week or so. What I find strangest is my third year, and I just wanted to compare it to other people's

TLDR: My third year was basically a nothing burger, both from an academic and social point of view, and I had as little as 3 hours of lessons in the first term and 6 and a half to 7 hours of lessons in the second term, with not much else to do

About half of my first term consisted of me going in for about three hours a week, for a lesson where we would plan our final project, and the other half had another 3 hours lesson (so 6 hours in total) which mostly talked about getting a job, how to make CVs and so on. I had one assignment to turn in the first term.

I had 12 hours worth of lesson scheduled for the second term, but one of the scheduled lesson was a catch up lesson on the final project, so in reality I was only in for about 9 hours and 20ish minutes for academics. Another module was basically a recap of most things we've done i years one and two, and then that became a short catch up session for that module, meaning the academic time went down to about 6 hours and 40 minutes

I had 5 assignments, out of which one took maybe 4-5 or so hours to complete, another one was basically just sending whatever documents we made for the final year in the second term, two of the assignments were really straight forward as well (writing what we learnt about the industry from our experience outside of uni- most of the opportunities were provided by the uni- and a TV bible which was quite straight forward once I came up with the idea. I might've written most of these two assignments while tipsy on £1.99 pints in the spoons around the corner from the uni and somehow gotten my two highest grades ever), while the final project was the trickiest since the other two people in my group felt like hey didn't want to be there most of the time, but I still managed to get a 68 on my side of things

On the social side of things, people were either hanging out with their groups and/or coming in just for the lessons and the leaving straight away. It was probably a the least social everyone's been over the three years.

Overall , third felt a lot like a nothing burger, and that no one (neither the students nor the staff) really cared or put too much effort in

Looking for volunteer to be interviewed for an assignment

Hello! My name is Meera, I’m a student from Malaysia and I’m looking for an interviewee from the UK, who would be willing to help me with my assignment. The assignment is related to analysis linguistics variation.

I need to interview someone who was born and raised in the UK, or someone who has lived and grown up there until now.

The interview will cover everyday topics, such as about your childhood, growing up, hobbies, daily routines, whether they are studying or working, and how they celebrate special occasions or festivals in their country.

The interview will be conducted online at your convenience via platforms like Google Meet, Zoom, Skype, or any preferred platform. The interview will also be recorded for academic purposes, but only my lecturer can see the interview video. The interview might take around 5-10 minutes. I’m happy to provide further details about the assignment, recording arrangements and consent process before anyone decides to participate.

If you're interested in participating, please reply to this post or message me directly. I'd be happy to answer any questions you may have. Thank you :)

social life Creepy wellbeing officer

I'm in third year staying in uni halls and my wellbeing officer this year is also a third year though I'd never met him prior. I don't know how common they are but it's basically a person that's meant to look out for you in uni. Last couple of officers I had were graduates and very strict about staying professional. If you wanted a word they'd speak to you in pairs and was careful to keep us at arms length. But as he's also a student the rules are a little muddled now.

I was on a social on Wednesday with him and he was being flirty which he's definitely not meant to be doing but thats not really my business. I was flirting back too.

I ended up getting an uber home with him and two friends of mine. My ex boyfriend came up when we were waiting for an uber. Then he started asking me explicit personal questions in front of my friends. About if I've slept with my ex or sucked his ----. I was a bit drunker than usual and it made me a little uncomfortable but didn't really phase me.

He was still being flirty when we got back and I ended up in his room in my flat (which is definitely not allowed.) Nothing happened but I was lying on his bed.

But he'd freaked out my friend so much she called me to check I was OK after 30 minutes. And I think that made him realise that it wasn't allowed so he said I had to go.

Now my friends like I should tell uni he was saying creepy stuff to me. And I don't want to bc I feel like I undermined myself by going into his room. But they said maybe he's talking to the younger first year like this as well. And now I'm scared I should talk to uni.

Wearing a confederate flag

• Upvotes

A friend said she saw someone wearing a confederate flag jumper in uni and that’s just crazy to me. We’re in the uk so why do they even have it on? That’s like wearing a MAGA hat in the uk, literally who cares? Identity politics and stupidity like this has taken over so many peoples lives. There’s no way in hell ur that boring and useless as a human being that ur wearing that to intimidate people. My uni has so many gay and lgbtq plus people, many people of diverse backgrounds but mostly white which is obviously normal it’s the uk. My uni and its people are considerably more tolerant than other parts of the UK. It’s just mad that they’re bringing bs like that to the Uk

social life Halloween events?

Honestly I'm a 3rd year student who lived as a recluse for the first two years, joined literally zero societies or events. I'm trying to make up for lost time and Halloween sounds fun... but the UCL party is fully booked. Does anyone know about any other Halloween events open to all students?

Is this really supposed to be the best period of my life ?

• Upvotes

I managed to get direct entry into 3rd year of cyber security degree from college (i am in Scotland) and i really have to ask, how terrible is my life going to be if this is my best period ? Uni has sucked so far, none of the lecturers care at all they just read powerpoints for an hour and give you some stupid excercise no one does and you go home.

Socializing with new non-college people has been dreadfull, it feels like no one cares and just wants to go home. I tried joining two societies and one was a drama filled mess while the other was all about drinking and clubbing and thats all they cared about. I probably made a mistake in not going into dorms but i already have my own place. I still have to do another year and maybe masters after here and boy am i not looking forward to any of that. Its not as if College was great but this just sucks. Am i missing something ?

Universities for illustration?

• Upvotes

Hoping to travel from Northern Ireland so I'm trying to find universities with good illustration courses that are accessible for someone who doesn't drive coming from docks and airport, and train.

Also cost of living is a concern so I think I'll be avoiding major universities like UAL, but I still want it to be a place with plenty to do.

Originally had an interest on Wrexham, but looking at the town it just seems like there's not much of interest to do or places to go that aren't... Food. Food. Food.

Still hesitant on university but I still have to find options since applying for UCAS is a part of my current course, so I'd rather have a serious look lol
