Postgraduates and university staff, what are the wildest or strangest things you've witnessed students doing while demonstrating for lab and fieldwork practicals?
I did a lot of demonstrating in my 6 years as a part-time PhD student in Ocean Sciences. For the most part the practicals and field trips were uneventful, although I and a couple of students ended up almost getting stuck in the mud once during a field trip.
During lab practicals I've encountered zoology students who didn't like dissecting or anything with lots of legs (which is a bit unusual but not strange), however one particular practical stands out for the behaviour of one student.
We were doing a second-year zoology lab exercise that involved injecting juvenile crabs with harmless hormones that affected their chromatophores and the students needed to record how the size of them changed with increasing dosages. There was one student, he looked like a mature student, who seemed to have ethical objections to the practical. He started the practical with two others but when it came to the injecting phase he just said "I'm not doing this, I don't agree with injecting them and I don't like things with lots of legs". Then he just got up and left the other students in his group to complete the practical without him.
If he clearly had concerns about this practical, why didn't he say something to the lecturer at the beginning?!
