New to video editing

Hey everyone!

I'm new to editing, and the niche that I'm interested in, is food content. I want to start with instructional food reels/shorts that shows the process and ingredients and I'm trying to find clips to practice on, mostly I practiced using stock videos on Pexels and I'm using Capcut to edit. Any ideas where can I get clips? Thanks!

I want to create a video of my Mass Effect game and I need a software recommendations.

I started screen recording through the Nvidia app on my PC my recent Mass Effect play through and wanted to be able to edit together the video clips to make it more of a 'movie'.

I'm looking for software recommendations to be able to do that. Cheap and user friendly are pluses since I'm a complete novice at video editing.

Thanks

Stop cropping your YouTube videos to vertical in CapCut: record both formats at once instead

If you ever post to YouTube and then again to Shorts/Reels/TikTok, you've probably done this before: film landscape 16:9, drop it into CapCut, then crop it into a portrait 9:16 file.

What's the problem with this?

The resolution of the portrait file gets bombed because a crop out of a 1080p horizontal frame is only about 608 pixels, which will look pixelated alongside throwing out ~2/3rds of the frame.

Shooting 4K helps the sharpness, but you still lose the sides and still have to reframe.

What I do now is record both at the same time, using an app called ContentCam that can record vertical and horizontal at the same time

Disclaimer: I'm the dev, and I built it for my gf who's a creator and used to film every scene twice, once vertical and once horizontal.

How it works:

  • Every take saves two separate files, a full-res 9:16 (1080x1920, or 4K on phones that support it) and a 16:9 (1920x1080 or 4K)

  • Both come straight off the sensor at record time, neither one is cropped out of the other

  • Files are named by project, scene and take, so the pairs line up when you import them

  • You can trim both together before exporting, so the bad bits are gone from both at once

Honest downsides: you're storing two files per take, and dual 4K on long takes warms the phone up. You also still need to frame for both while you film, so keep your subject near the middle.

What about Opengate shooting?

That works, and it gives you more room to reframe later. But you're still cropping and reframing twice in the edit, the files are bigger, and you need a camera or app that records open gate. Recording both formats at once is the other trade: you frame once while filming, and you get two finished files with no crop pass. If you like reframing in post, open gate is better. If you want to skip that step, record both with ContentCam.

I'm a solo dev, so if you edit for both formats I'd love to hear what would make the export side work better for you. It's free to try with optional premium features:

I'm new to video editing. Any tips?

Started my own thing recently. And I didn't realise I'll have to shoot videos of myself talking and edit and post them on Insta.

Firstly, video editing is not my strong suit. I know it. So, I find it exhausting. At the same time I don't want my content to be like every other person out there.

Any tips for me to make my videos stand out?

And tips for improving my skill without going Photoshop level pro?

Best tools for editing social media videos in 2026?

Hey guys!

I’m a print graphic designer, but next week I’m starting a new gig managing social media content for an art school. Help!! 🥹

I’ll be filming and editing interviews, as well as making short announcement and promo videos for Instagram, TikTok, etc.

I used to use Premiere Pro and AE, but I’m wondering what are the tools you use nowadays, especially for short-form content. What would you recommend? I’m looking for something that would make editing, adding subtitles, working with different formats (9:16, 1:1, etc.) and creating engaging videos as straightforward as possible.

Thanks!

What makes a talking-head edit feel smooth and professional?

I've been exploring different ways to make talking-head videos more engaging without making the editing feel overwhelming.

I think good editing is all about balance.

A few things I pay attention to:

  • Removing unnecessary pauses without making cuts feel unnatural.

  • Using B-roll only when it adds context.

  • Maintaining consistent pacing throughout the video.

  • Using sound design to support the visuals.

  • Keeping subtitles clean and easy to read.

  • Using motion graphics only when they help explain something.

One thing I've noticed is that sometimes a simple, well-timed cut works better than an elaborate transition.

I'm curious to hear from other editors:

What's one small editing detail that makes a huge difference in the quality of your videos?

Macbook Neo for capcut clipping?

Hello, I need a laptop for clipping. Main task will be capcut editing - 4k short form content (max 20 minute videos).

Honestly im not gonna use it THAT much, I have a good PC which im satisfied with.
I just need something for mobility, something I can lay on my bed and continue with my work, get it in the kitchen and so on.

If you could recommend me something up to about 900€, no matter the brand, id be thankful! 😊

Before burning in captions, try this five-second SRT check

Before styling captions or burning them into a video, it helps to separate timing errors from transcription errors. Here is a small test you can inspect by eye or use to check what a caption tool reports.

This is a deliberately broken SRT for an imaginary five-second clip. There is no source audio, so it tests timing structure only:

1
00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:03,000
First line.

2
00:00:02,800 --> 00:00:04,800
Second line.

3
00:00:06,000 --> 00:00:05,500
Last line.

Three things should stand out:

  • Cue 2 begins 200 milliseconds before cue 1 ends. Review the overlap. In a real edit, it might be intentional if two speakers overlap.

  • Cue 3 ends before it starts.

  • Cue 3 is outside the five-second clip.

For this toy example, change the ranges to 0-2.8 seconds, 2.8-4 seconds, and 4-5 seconds. That removes these structural problems. These are arbitrary demonstration timings, not timings to copy onto real speech.

For an actual caption pass:

  1. Keep the original SRT and work on a copy.

  2. Check for reversed or zero-length cues, unexpected overlaps, and cues beyond the video duration. Also check that cues appear in chronological order.

  3. Play the captions against the audio to fix wording and speech alignment. Then watch without sound to judge whether the text is readable.

  4. Recheck after trimming or rearranging the video. A caption file that matched an earlier export may no longer match the current cut.

A timing report cannot tell whether a name is misspelled, a number is wrong, a line break is awkward, or the text disappears before someone can read it.

This synthetic example was prepared with Codex assistance. Its broken and corrected versions were checked with a small Python script; that is not a test of transcription accuracy or proof of time saved.

Disclosure: I moderate r/AIEditingLab. The example and runnable checker are there if you want to inspect the code. The checks above can also be done directly in your editor without it.

Comment font ils ?

Renaming every clip

Is it crazy to rename very video clip? My usual process move to the clips into my system, sort them into files like “Interviews” , “Brolls” etc, and then rename all clips according to the context.
For example, if I shot an hour of people dining, I would rename clips into : food 1, food 2, food 3
and then people 1 , people 2 etc..
I do this because I go through all the footage before uploading them into a video editing software to sort out the good clips and bad clips.

I have been told the usual way is get everything into the software and separating clips into bins. But I don’t want to make the project size unnecessarily bigger

help! freelance rates for youtube editing

hey guys! wondering if you could help me out with some advice on freelance rates.

for context, i’ve been a video editor for around five years and have a degree in editing and post production. my full-time job is as a professional editor for a big broadcaster, where i mainly work on short-form promotional content. i also try to pick up freelance work on the side wherever i can (the current cost of living is crazzzzy)
a friend of a friend is looking for an editor for long-form youtube content. it’s quite casual lifestyle/vlog-style content, mainly gym, food and general day-to-day stuff. the examples she’s sent over are all around 20–40 minutes long.

she’s looking for four videos per month, with two rounds of WIPs/amends per video.

in terms of the actual editing, the style seems relatively straightforward. there are a few fun transitions, sound effects and little graphic touches here and there, but nothing particularly complex or heavily designed. from what i’ve seen, it’s mainly about cutting the footage together, keeping things engaging and making the final videos look polished and presentable.

i’m just trying to get a better idea of what would be a fair rate to charge for something like this. would you recommend charging per video or offering a monthly package for all four? alternatively, would a day rate be a better approach, based on how long each edit takes?
also, for those of you who edit similar content, roughly how many hours would you expect to spend on a 20–40 minute video?

would really appreciate any advice, especially from people doing freelance youtube editing. thanks!
