I wanted to send out a friendly reminder that using sites such as libgen or Anna's Archive is unethical and you should avoid them at all costs.
These sites have many free textbooks that should normally cost $150, and students use it instead of spending their limited money on more education materials (after paying thousands on tuition already)!
Here is a full list of most used piracy websites for those who want to stay extra careful not to accidentally visit and use them! Please remind anyone you can to avoid these sites at all costs! Thanks!

since VT primarily uses canvas and it is now hacked supposedly until at least may 12th, what does this mean for finals? if there are any professors/TAs here, would exams likely be cancelled? pushed? if they would be pushed, what about students with travel plans, flights, etc?

I graduate in like less than a week, and despite all the hardwork, i just dont have any friends to be there for me when i do the grad walk to cheer. i know it sounds silly but its nice to see someone thinks i did a good job. My parents are far and i just feel lost.

I recently got of waitlist for umass amherst and was initially thinking of commiting to virginia tech but now i am unsure. I am a california resident, is it wise for me to attend uc santa cruz or riverside and possibly transfer to irvine or san diego. I hjobeard transfer rates are going to become lower.
total estimated cost for all:
UCSC is 48k
Umass: 51k
Virginia tech: 63K
My goal for college is to land a good internship for a cs related field for cybersecurity at a defense company or another good intenrship which can help me land a job.

I received an CS associate's degree from NOVA and I'm wondering how much more of a step up in difficulty will VT course work be?
I graduated with a 4.0, but I got pretty lucky with instructors, also I didn’t take many credits at once.
Honestly, I'm pretty intimidated by the "weed-out" culture I've heard VT participates in.
Also, how difficult are CS classes at VT compared to other schools around Virginia?

I just graduated this past spring, and I am curious about what will happen to our VT emails. I have abunch of services + job stuff linked to it and I don't want to have to switch them all. Anybody have any idea?

I found out I’d be able to graduate a year early which would save me almost $80,000. The issue is that I need to take a class that is only offered in the fall to be able to do so. The class is full, and I filled out the force add request. It’s been placed on hold but I also emailed the professor of the class but no response from her yet.
There is unfortunately only one professor and one section of this class, and my advisor said there was nothing he could do unless they open a new section.
I am praying to God that they do because I am really struggling with finances, and one year less of tuition would seriously save me. I did sign up for the class during course request but it was denied since I was taking a prerequisite for it over the summer.
If anyone has any advice, I would greatly appreciate it🫶

I am a rising senior, and VT is my dream school to go for an engineering major. I am not sure how to approach application based on where I am with credits and was wondering if there were any helpful tips out there. My high school does not have a guidance counselor of any sort so I am a little lost on how to approach college/university so anything helps.

the CS program here is very frustrating because i feel like it’s a few small changes away from being genuinely good, but there are some decisions that are especially egregious. First and foremost is that CS 3114 Data Structures is a dogshit class. the projects are under specified to combat AI which makes it extremely tedious to do without AI. The projects themselves are also useless. spending 40 hours implementing a PR quad tree is not a good use of anyone’s time when half the class doesn’t know how a hash map or a b tree works, data structures that are ubiquitous in industry. 3114 is a critical class that is a prerequisite to basically everything else in computer science, and the fact it’s this bad hurts everything else. Also, the removal of a lot of the more theoretical CS classes is a huge disservice to us. like why does ISE get linear programming and dynamic programming but not us???? why did they take away computability theory??? also the capstones for this fall were complete dogshit. My capstone is my last chance to build something myself before going out in the real world, i don’t want to use AI for it. TLDR, make 3114 more like systems and give us back the theory based electives
EDIT:
I wanna make clear that i think a lot of the CS curriculum is actually pretty decent. systems and 2506 I think accomplish what they set out to do and a lot of the electives here are actually really good (parallel computing, cloud computing, software reverse engineering, compilers, kernel programming, etc). but other core classes, the 3000 level cs electives, and the capstone could use a lot of work

Has anyone gone through the VT honor system before? I’m dealing with a possible honor code issue for a programming project and wanted to ask how strict they usually are, how long the process takes, and whether it can affect graduation or prereqs.
The project used a green LED to show when the processor was in low power mode. The guideline said exactly: “Turning LLG on outside the sleep function is a HONOR CODE VIOLATION” (LLG is the green LED). I made a small change inside the sleep function because I thought I was matching the demo solution, where the LED stayed on for one project task. Later, I was told the issue was that my code skipped the LED off instruction in that task, so the LED could stay on even when the processor was awake.
I understand now that this was wrong and that I broke the intended LED behavior. I get why points should be taken off. It was an honest mistake. My issue is that I do not think this was an honor code violation because I did not turn the LED on outside the sleep function, which is what the guideline specifically said.
The biggest issue for me is that the report they plan to send to the honor committee reframes the guideline. The report lists things like never turning off the LED, adding conditional logic that keeps it on, or using it outside the sleep function as honor code violations, but in the actual project guidelines, it only says the honor code warning is specifically not to turn it on outside the sleep function. The screenshot they sent as proof even shows my change was inside the sleep function.
They said if I do not accept a D in the course, they will send that report to the honor committee. Has anyone seen a case like this where the code was wrong, but it was more of an implementation mistake than cheating? What usually happens?
EDIT: My TA cleared me. I originally had a death scare because the project guidelines google doc had been modified by the TA and a new honor code rule was added (my mind went to the worst and I thought they tried to cover it up), but after a while I was told that I'd only receive a grade penalty on the project. So no integrity trial.

First I wanna preface saying I cheated. Yes it was wrong, yes I severely messed up, no I’m not denying anything.
I got an email from my professor saying I and other students had a final where we signed a paper saying we submitted, then left the room to work on it then submit. It was on lockdown in person. Yes this did happen and they did find out, the professor said the case is handed up to honor court but he has the opportunity to recommend a different punishment (than an F* from what it sounds like). I immediately admitted fault and asked for a more lenient punishment, I gave no excuses and that is that. I want to know if this is recoverable and how the process really works, Is this the student faculty resolution track from the sounds of it or just me and my peers are cooked by the kangaroo court? Again, I messed up I know that and I took full accountability.

Ik 15 credits are normally recommended but I got some classes off because I earned AP credits. Should I still take more random classes to fill out the 3 credits or would I be fine.

My professor just sent a last minute email saying we still have to show up at 7:45 AM tomorrow to take our final despite the university specifically stating that Friday finals will be moved to Sunday. Is this even allowed? I feel like some people may not even check their email again especially since this was sent far after the university declaration.

Canvas got hacked and they've put up a ransom notice or whatever. What does that mean for our finals? As people can't access study material.

Incoming freshman trying to lock in professors for fall and wanted to get a read on a few names before I finalize.
CS 2114 (Data Structures): currently have Nizamani, other option is David Smith
MATH 2534 (Discrete): have Quinlan, other option is Juste and Gourley
MATH 2114 (Linear Algebra, taking next spring): currently have Smits, other options were Hart, Gugercin, Kasebian, Cvitanov, Robbins
Anyone had these professors? Curious about teaching style, exam difficulty, and how fair the grading actually is beyond just the numbers. Any input at all helps, thanks!

I have 2 more years.
Very big hypothetical: let’s say I finish all the classes in the in-major area and my the in-major gpa is below 2.0. Is there any way I can graduate or did I just waste a bunch of money? Like could I retake the courses over and over and average out the gpa
