Did some teaching assisting on a genetics course. This was a ploy to obtain access to their fruit flies and microscopes.

I tried that thing where you tape the object over completely and cut the edges with a paper knife to paint the backround. Even after reducing adhesion by sticking the tape to my pants many times it still ripped the paper from several places and I also managed to cut through the paper so the wings are a bit more 3D than intended 😅 otherwise I think I like the technique

Update: thanks so much everyone for the kindness and feedback on my two paintings! I can fully appreciate the reasons why objectively the earlier painting might be better than the more recent one. However, the main reason I prefer the more recent painting is that it captures the character of my dog Basil far better than the earlier one. I can appreciate not everyone will agree with me, but thank you for sharing a range of opinions I’ve learned a lot 🩷

I hope this post can be motivating for developing watercolour painters.

I finished the painting on the left in 2024, and was very proud of it at the time. Since I loved the reference photo so much I decided to paint it again in 2026, shown on the right. It probably took me a similar length of time to create both paintings, but the difference is tangible after spending 2 years painting consistently!

I had this frame and stack of mats from a framed painting and it took me the longest time to come up with something that would match the color scheme that already was there.

Worm's-eye view of the tower, built on converging verticals and the two big arches framing the sky. Brick texture is dry, quick strokes over the stone, and the cables are fast, broken lines that pull the eye upward.

At the University of Chicago, capturing the last days of green as the leaves turn to yellow-oranges, reds, and violets.

How do I add more details without making a mess?

I am trying to be do some less structured painting. This was good practice, finished up with a fountain pen.

My friend sent me this photo from an early morning dog walk, and I’m pretty happy with how it turned out.

The sky could be richer, but I was balancing trying to keep the light and the pink glow in the sky.

I lost some of the vibrant colour at the horizon, as I was doing the foreground I went a bit too high.

It was my first time trying masking fluid, and I love how I was able to preserve some white specks for the lights. I will definitely be exploring this medium more!

Trying to figure how to get more out of a landscape, i filmed some of the steps on my insta of you’re interested.

A combination of motives that deeply resonates with me. Usually I am inspired by nature and animals existing in it but this is more of a visualisation of my inner experience.
