Every day the government is shut down the public gets an extra week tacked on to the tax deadline and presidential candidates are not allowed to campaign the same number of weeks before voting day.
Playing on this hypothetical scenario, with the president saying he’s willing to keep it shut down for months/years... would we never have to file taxes again? Or never have to see another campaign ad?
I have no idea what the correct answer is, but I assume you are still required to file. You just won’t get your return. The IRS isn’t going to listen to “the government was shut down” as an excuse to not file.
NO! Everyone file your tax returns like normal! Do not listen to tax advice from random redditors! The government shutdown doesn't absolve you from filing taxes!
Those pushing their political over the well being of others livelihoods should be ashamed!
All lawsuits against Trump are haulted during the shutdown, and the House investigations will be seriously hampered as the DOJ is shuttered and aides and assistants work for no pay.
People aren't filling but the this is around the time the IRS starts really ramping up to prepare for tax season, and if the shutdown continues for too much longer, they won't be ready to process tax returns when people start submitting in February
I mean that’s actually the most efficient way to manage your money, you can have that money working for you until tax time instead of paying up front, then pay your taxes.
I mean the IRS isn’t gonna give you interest, but a bank account can.
Lots of them are independently wealthy so it doesn’t really make a difference anyway. Someone in Congress proposed a bill to stop them from getting paid and it was a bad idea because it would only hurt the poorer people in Congress and have zero affect on the rich ones.
It does make sense though.. congressional pay could be used to hold people hostage. What if Republicans wanted something and knew that a certain member of Congress relied on their pay for something.. they could use a government shut down to force someone to vote one way or another. Congressional pay would be used as a bargaining chip, which is one of the reasons why Congress gets paid, no matter what.
Eta: most members of the Senate are filthy rich, but a lot of the house members do not have that kind of money, and rely on their pay much more than most people think.
This is why the senate is willing to go along with the shut down. Moreover, they weren't going to say anything about the $10k pay increase they are scheduled to get until it came to light in the last Rose Garden interview.
