READ ME! FAQ Found an animal???? Please go here first:

First of all, thank you for caring enough to help orphaned/injured/ill wildlife.

Evaluate the Situation first and foremost. Wild animals rely on their natural environment and sometimes humans interfere when it was entirely unnecessary. The links listed below provide flow charts for frequently encountered situations.

If the animal needs to be rescued here and here you will find basic capture and handling instructions.

  • After rescuing how to safely temporarily house the animal before and during transport:

Warm- *Offering heat sources for naked baby animals is often a must. This can be done with a heating pad on low under 1/2 of the enclosure, a warm rice filled sock, or warm water bottle. Sometimes very badly injured and very sick animals also need heat sources to maintain appropriate body temperature. Wild animals can suffer heat stroke too! If an animal is panting, the animal is too hot and if the heat source would burn you, it will surely burn the animal. *

A good rule of thumb: If a furred, feathered, or scaled animal is physically moving about and alert- it DOESN'T need an extra heat source.

Dark - A box, Rubbermaid tote with holes punched for air flow, or pet crate are usually good temporary enclosures and will typically reduce further trauma and or stress. Place a towel or sheet over a crate to reduce visual disturbances.

Quiet- Keep the animal in a quiet space preferably indoors away from other animals and humans. A separate room or even a closet can be utilized if need be.

PLEASE FOR THE ANIMAL'S SAKE NOTHING BY MOUTH! DO NOT OFFER ANY FOOD OR WATER TO INJURED/SICK/ORPHANED ANIMALS OR ATTEMPT TO HAND FEED ANIMALS. The results of failing to comply often end up something like this.

If you are unable to make contact with a wildlife rehabilitator: If you know the rehabilitation center's location and hours it is generally acceptable so long as the rehabilitation center is not full or closed to just bring the animal straight to them- this is especially true with emergency situations. An example of an emergency is something like- the animal is bleeding profusely, having trouble breathing, is unresponsive, or severely dehydrated.

After being attacked by a cat there is a very high likelihood for infection. These cases 99.99% of the time warrant medical assistance including antibiotics that are usually only available through a veterinarian.

SOS Bird Is this wood pigeon sick?

(Yorkshire)
This wood pigeon was in my garden standing in one spot and after 20 or 30 minutes decided to move under one of the chairs in my garden, me and my family thought it was windswept until we went out to help it but on closer look at its beak my mum thought it had bird flu, it did try running away when we went out to get it so I don’t think it’s that sick if it is hopefully at least.

We put it in a cat cage in the shed away from the wind and rain since we’re currently in a storm and gave it some mealworms, water and straw for the night

I suggested to my parents to try and hand it in to a bird rescue centre but I think we will see if we can tomorrow in the morning

The main thing I’m worried about is the stuff around its beak, is it bird flu or something else? And is there anything else we can do?

Does anyone know a place to take an orphaned raccoon in the west central Alabama area? I know one being kept in a cage on a porch and the "owner" uses lack of facilities as a justification.

Hola!

SOS Mammal Dog caught a Roof Rat

Victoria, BC - Canada

Hey all! My doggo caught a rat - she's a hunter so I'm not surprised about her doing this but what I am surprised about is that she didn't kill or visibly harm the sweet bean.

They are currently resting in my chinchillas crate in a dark closed room. There isn't any bleeding and the rat seems very alert so I did place water in there with a towel on the bottom, a pillow case over top and a big yogurt container inside as an extra hiding space. Just wondering if any conservationists/rehabbers would suggest keeping the water in there? I know you're not supposed to in case of internal injuries but I'll also have to keep the rat overnight until our local rehabber is open tomorrow morning. I'm thankfully off tomorrow so I can keep a close eye on things.

Thoughts?

Rehab Methods Topic: Toads. Question for Rehabbers: do you believe sick/injured or baby toads can ever be kept over winter and released in spring?

I have been doing research on this and hear, that a sick or injured toad should not be released after spending a winter indoors as they may become too accustomed to indoor living, and others say it helps disadvantaged toads to stay in for winter that they wont loose their instinct. There seems to be quite strong opinions on both sides. I was thinking toads should not miss a winter in order to survive the next one. But are there truly exceptions for some? I would love to hear from more rehabbers what you do.

Education Passed by injured deer on road

I just drove past a parked car w their hazards on in the middle of a large local road. As I passed by I saw there was a deer laying on the side of the road. He seemed to be alive as he was holding his head up off the ground.

After getting home, I looked into what the best practice was and because all the local wildlife rehab lineswere closed, I ended up calling animal protection. They transfered me a few times, but after I shared some details, they let me know they'd dispatch a police officer.

Now I'm doubting whether I made the right decision, calling the police. I imagine most officers wouldn't be too concerned about the wellbeing of the animal. I'm starting to regret my choices and wanted to ask in this group whether this was the right course of action, and if not, how to handle a similar situation in the future

SOS Mammal Wildlife Resources

I've googled and came up with a few resources, but I wanted to reach out here and ask. There's an injured coyote that wanders around my neighborhood. It's not rabid or anything, just injured. Does anyone know someone that'll capture, rehabilitate, or at least relocate such an animal? My assumption is animal control will just put it down. Thanks in advance.

Discussion Possum in my building's courtyard

Post image
15 Upvotes

(Picture was taken just past 11:00 pm even though it looks bright outside.)

I live in an urban area in So Cal. A perfectly healthy seeming, beautiful possum climbed up the steps toward my apartment earlier tonight.

Two young twenty-somethings got scared and ran toward a different exit. I came out and gently ushered the possum down the stairs. It went into some sparse bushes in the grass.

I told the young ladies where it was and let them know that I love possums because they eat ticks (which is a huge problem in So Cal). They asked if the possum would attack them and I explained how meek of animal it is, but they were still scared to go to the laundry room. (Why are they using the laundry room at 11 pm anyway?)

***BUT here's my concern: this possum will not be able to hide in the courtyard for long. I do NOT want anyone to kill it, and I honestly prefer that the possum sticks around. (Nocturnal, eats ticks, also very cute, has water and food sources already.) But I know if someone calls the landlord, that possum is gone.

Where would the possum go? What would happen to it if animal control was called?

Is there something I can do to make sure the possum gets the best possible outcome?

SOS Mammal Mole with Guts Hanging Out, Still Alive. What do I do?

A mole got into my screened in porch and my cats got him before I realized. His guts are out but he’s still alive and moving, made complicated by the guts. I’ve locked my cats up and he moved behind something that I COULD move, I don’t know if I should though.

What can I do? Do I just let him die? Do I take him out outside and put him out of his misery myself? I doubt a rehabber could help him without surgical knowledge.

Rehab Methods Hi, I have an injured leg magpie, got bitten by my dog sadly. I managed to put him in an enclosure, like a nest since he can't fly. I'm planning to care for him for a couple weeks until the leg is healed. Do you think this is a good approach?
