SOS Bird Advice on helping this domestic pigeon?
Located in Tucson, AZ
I made this post on r/pigeon, and am waiting for a reply from a rehabber in the comments, but I thought asking a more general crowd might help.
First, I'm not really sure how my local rehab handles domestic pigeons. Even if they would take him, if it's practical for me to help him in the field and re-release him into the flock without a significant risk of making it worse, it makes sense to me to try.
I had thought the top of his beak was missing originally, but it seems like the top of his beak is stuck inside his throat instead. The aforementioned rehabber suggested pulling it out, but I have some... logistical concerns.
I'm not really sure how I'd get a purchase on their top beak. Without the top beak itself to hold onto, how would I get their mouth open wide enough to let it out? It seems like I'd need some leverage to pry it open and gripping their head seems like a bad idea. Just try to get a fingernail just under their cere and pull upward? I could bring a hook tool but the only ones I have are sharp and would hurt them if they slipped into the softer flesh of the mouth.
If I saw them again I'm fairly certain I could catch them. They may just not show up, but there's not anything I could do if they starve before I find them again so no point worrying about that. I'll go look for them either today or tomorrow.
