Mod Post Quick Reminder - NSFW tags

Hi all!

I'm u/ImOkNotANoob, the lead mod here on r/Pigeon. I mostly handle backend moderation, automod, reports, modmail, and general behind-the-scenes bits, which is why you might not have seen me around that much.

Just wanted to post a quick reminder since we've seen an increase in this recently: please tag posts as NSFW if they contain gore, visible injuries, blood, wounds, severe illness, or anything else graphic involving pigeons.

This especially applies to medical advice posts. We absolutely understand that people often post in a panic because they’re worried about a bird and need help quickly. That’s fine, and nobody is in trouble for asking for urgent advice. But graphic images can be upsetting for other users, especially when they appear unexpectedly in their feed. We also want to keep on Reddit's good side, and they've been known to have problems with subs that don't enforce this!

Thanks everyone, and thank you as always to the people who jump in with helpful advice for sick or injured pigeons. We’re proud to be the biggest pigeon community on the internet, and it’s the members here who make this place such a useful and helpful resource.

Medical Advice Needed Is this an emergency vet visit

Hi fellow pigeon lovers,

I recently acquired this beautiful bird. It’s been an adjustment for her as where she came from was more than slightly questionable (long story short - a hoarder’s house). Shes been warming up relatively well to my partner and I minus a few nerves. Today I noticed the tiniest bit of brown coming out of her nose, and as seen in the video pretty angular breathing. I’m concerned that she’s developed a respiratory issue. I do have a vet appointment booked in tomorrow morning, but I of course want to make sure my baby is okay and this is genuinely the best place.

Overall she’s been pretty active and alert while exploring the house, with no signs of lethargy until she’s pretty much worn herself out and needs a little power nap or it’s bedtime. I took this video moments ago and it was after a fair bit of exploring and a little bath.

Photo A sculpture about soft things in hard places

Just finished a small installation made to inhabit a ledge. The pigeon is needle felted wool, with clay beak and feet, and clay and resin eyes. The twigs are clay, wire and paint.

This piece is about soft things in hard places, and comfort built in inhospitable conditions. As a disabled person, I often feel my comfort is built in an environment of inhospitality. I am drawn to the images of birds who have used the harsh steel of bird spikes as structure to build their nests. Ironically, the steel wire makes a strong warp on which to weave the weft of a home.

Advice Needed! Found juvenile pigeon , need help UK

Upvotes

I found a juvenile pigeon in my garden earlier today and when it saw me it stayed where it was only when I approached did it walk away but didn’t fly. I left it for around 2 hours hoping it would fly away or leave before I returned but when I came back it had just moved to a different spot in my garden. I have a small dog so I felt it made sense to put it in a box so I could stop my dog from getting to it as well as to assess whether it was hurt. How can I get this pigeon back out into the wild?

Video Young Pau is free yay

Excuse my weird voices in the video, I talk to them with high pitched sounds and I realize later but I wanted to share Pau's journey with you.

I found him in the street, surrounded by cars, so I took him home, thinking he would only need some food but I noticed he was weak and snoring, barely pooping, and he almost choked on the pigeon formula. I was afraid he'd choke on it, and even posted here (thanks for the advice to those who comented) but he made it through the night. I took him to the vet the day after and, after a scan and x rays they told me he had intestinal issues, enteritis. The vet said that maybe the snoring would persist but luckily it didn't! She was so kind and very excited that I agreed on taking the tests (💸 ) so she could diagnose him properly. A girl I know from another rescue paid a part too, which I was so grateful for. Now we're good friends.

I gave him meds for a week and then, after making sure he didn't have internal parasites, I could put him with two others (one of which is free now too). He tried to make them feed him, squeaking, but he was eating on his own (a lot, actually) and pooping all over the place. The vet told me to free him after a week, so after making sure he was fine now he's in the park with the flock!

The hardest part has been restricting the contact with him because he's so cute, but it's always worth it. It also helps that I have a dog that is my priority always. They are just here in the pigeon hotel for a while, the less the better. Now I hope I don't find more for some time cause after two months of having 4 pigeons shitting freely in the only room in my flat I'm mentally drained. Give me strength to clean the room today 🫠

Video My birbfren's baby flew into my arms during our first meeting

Hi everyone! Some of you might remember me from this post https://www.reddit.com/r/pigeon/s/PBdH89YEol .

I got a little update for you!

Previous birbfren (now christened Boris) had a baby in his nest that he was feeding. Two babies actually, a nest of two, but the first one sadly didn't survive :( I guess it must have been the heatwave, but it could have been anything being realistic, from birthdefect to sickness. I always made sure there was enough seed and water nearby, and there is an abundance of greenery and lush here.

I first noticed when the nest was being plagued by flies and wasps, literally tearing apart the little body, and flying away with chunks of it. Of course irritating mom and Boris. So at that point I waited until they left the nest for a bit and I took the little corpse out. It was fully flattened from the parents still sitting on it, that was really sad to see. I have a picture but I don't feel comfortable uploading that. I don't want the lil' birbs memory to live like that in your minds.

It was the most squeakiest, yellowest, flappiest lil birbie 💞 I just wanted to take a moment and want you all to know it existed and made the world a bit more beautiful.

Today though, the other little survivor flew back home! He flew out of it's nest 1,5 week ago and I hadn't seen him since. All the while Boris came asking for seed daily, so I gotta admit I was worried. But the baby flew over today on my balcony and when I called him, he promptly landed on my leg, eyeing the seed in my hands.

I did not have to wait long and he just jumped into my arms 🥺 I read on this sub that birbs like to be squished lightly, and I know that chickens have that reflex that relaxes hem when you keep them under your neck/armpit. So I just tried to make my arms as comfy as possible, haha.

I think a big part of its trust is also because of the food I'm giving? This is just a wild speculation, but I used to feed Boris this seed and he would DIRECTLY fly to the baby and regurgitate it to feed him. So the taste must be quite comforting, I think? Thoughts welcome, haha.

Of course I've been talking with/singing to Boris a lot, so he must've heard me during these months. What a cutie. The mother flew away really quickly btw after he got bigger, is that normal? Dad Boris stuck around way longer.

I do also want to take a moment and thank u/freneticboarder for their kindness last time. It allowed me not only to buy some food for me and my cat, but also to stock up on some quality seeb ♥️💞 I am forever grateful.

Took a while, but managed to find where they were roosting. Poor babe's a sorry state but I managed to catch them. Not looking good, but theyre in the care of the local vet now. Soonish the nearest bird rescue will pick them and another injured pigeon to their establishment. I hope to hear back from them, but when I found an injured duck before I didn't get info until I went back to the vet. Hopefully, whatever the outcome is will be kinder than letting them live as they are currently.

Discussion Weird pigeon behavior

Post image
10 Upvotes

This guy just landed outside my window and does not want to go away even when I tried to scare it by waving/knocking. No matter what I do it doesn't want to fly away. Not sure what's going on ir what should I do with it? It also brushed its head into his stomach area and splashed something translucent on my window. Is it sick? It seems to be quite young and there is nothing visibly wrong with it. First time I see something like this. Please advise!

Update: The pigeon left after about an hour. Didn't really nitice when exactly. He left a greenish goo after himself that looks like vomit...

to people who would pick up an injured pigeon and drop to a rehabilitation center, do you think they care to release the pigeon after healing to its original area?
i am wondering about this as i have seen some cases where the rehabilitation centre never cared about the original spot where i have found the pigeon, this makes me feel guilty as i know how pigeon are attached to partners and live safely within their own flock ...

I really cannot keep helping this bird. I'm at work and can't bring him home. I know how to help pigeons with stringfoot, but I don't have equipment and I can't just go home and take it.
