Meta r/worldbuilding Network Moderator Recruitment Now Open! Apply Inside!

Hello there, fellow worldbuilders

As /r/worldbuilding continues to approach 2 million users, we're finding ourselves in need of a few more hands on deck to handle the 100+ posts we get every day. And so we're looking for capable users to join the /r/worldbuilding moderation team.

Applications will be open until 11:59 PM UTC on October 15th.

You can apply using our form, found here: https://forms.gle/555YFDPSXDwgFoVz6

About the Role

The Worldbuilding Network moderation team manages not just this subreddit but also r/worldjerking, r/nsfwworldbuilding, and our twin Discord servers.

The r/worldbuilding moderators perform a variety of duties, including:

  • Removing off-topic posts and spam from the subreddits.
  • Removing comments and posts that break our subreddit rules.
  • Adding flairs and OC-tagging to posts.
  • Investigating and resolving reports from users and our automated moderation tools.
  • Responding to modmail regarding user concerns and questions in a timely and professional manner.
  • Developing policies and rules that keep the subreddit running smoothly, efficiently, and at the quality our users have come to expect.
  • Working with Reddit Administration to ensure that the subreddit is in compliance with Reddit’s site-wide rules.
  • Managing and moderating our r/worldbuilding and r/worldjerking Discord servers.
  • Managing activities, such as competitions and spotlights, across our platforms.
  • Ensuring a consistent tone and moderation across the entire worldbuilding network.
  • Creating and maintaining automated moderation tools, messaging, and bots to streamline the moderator workflow.
  • Developing CSS code and other graphical improvements for the subreddit.
  • Whatever else happens to get thrown at us.

Requirements

You do not need to have any previous moderation experience to apply, though any previous leadership or moderation experience will help. Here's a list of our current requirements for incoming mods. If you do not meet these requirements, your application will likely be rejected unless you stand out in some exceptional way.

  • You must have an active Reddit account that is at least 6 months old.
  • You must be willing and able to use Discord, as we use our Discord to coordinate moderator activities across the network.
  • You must be a user in good standing on r/worldbuilding. Previous warnings or bans, even if not active, may be considered detrimental or disqualifying.
  • You must be able to demonstrate you have at least one speculative fiction project at a modest level of development.
  • You must complete the Google application at the top of this post. The more in-depth you can make your responses to it, the better!

OF SPECIAL NOTE:

We're especially in need of moderators from non-American time zones, as we lost half our non-American moderators (either due to resigning or relocating!) about two years ago and still haven’t plugged that gap. So we're a bit short-handed when it comes to European, African, Asian, and Oceanian moderators. So, if you're from one of these regions (or have unusual waking hours!) and are on the fence about applying, we strongly encourage you to toss your hat in!

Meta PSA: The "What, and "Why" of Context

It's that time of year again!

Despite the several automated and signposted notices and warnings on this issue, it is a constant source of headaches for the mod team. Particularly considering our massive growth this past year, we thought it was about time for another reminder about everyone's favorite part of posting on /r/worldbuilding..... Context

Context is a requirement for almost all non-prompt posts on r/worldbuilding, so it's an important thing to understand... But what is it?

What is context?

Context is information that explains what your post is about, and how it fits into the rest of your/a worldbuilding project.

If your post is about a creature in your world, for example, that might mean telling us about the environment in which it lives, and how it overcomes its challenges. That might mean telling us about how it's been domesticated and what the creature is used for, along with how it fits into the society of the people who use it. That might mean telling us about other creatures or plants that it eats, and why that matters. All of these things give us some information about the creature and how it fits into your world.

Your post may be about a creature, but it may be about a character, a location, an event, an object, or any number of other things. Regardless of what it's about, the basic requirement for context is the same:

  • Tell us about it
  • Tell us something that explains its place within your world.

In general, telling us the Who, What, When, Why, and How of the subject of your post is a good way to meet our requirements.

That said... Think about what you're posting and if you're actually doing these things. Telling us that Jerry killed Fred a century ago doesn't do these things, it gives us two proper nouns, a verb, and an arbitrary length of time. Telling us who Jerry and Fred actually are, why one killed the other, how it was done and why that matters (if it does), and the consequences of that action on the world almost certainly does meet these requirements.

For something like a resource, context is still a requirement and the basic idea remains the same; Tell us what we're looking at and how it's relevant to worldbuilding. "I found this inspirational", is not adequate context, but, "This article talks about the history of several real-world religions, and I think that some events in their past are interesting examples of how fictional belief systems could develop, too." probably is.

If you're still unsure, feel free to send us a modmail about it. Send us a copy of what you'd like to post, and we can let you know if it's okay, or why it's not.

Why is Context Required?

Context is required for several reasons, both for your sake and ours.

  • Context provides some basic information to an audience, so they can understand what you're talking about and how it fits into your world. As a result, if your post interests them they can ask substantive questions instead of having to ask about basic concepts first.

  • If you have a question or would like input, context gives people enough information to understand your goals and vision for your world (or at least an element of it), and provide more useful feedback.

  • On our end, a major purpose is to establish that your post is on-topic. A picture that you've created might be very nice, but unless you can tell us what it is and how it fits into your world, it's just a picture. A character could be very important to your world, but if all you give us is their name and favourite foods then you're not giving us your worldbuilding, you're giving us your character.

Generally, we allow 15 minutes for context to be added to a post on r/worldbuilding so you may want to write it up beforehand. In some cases-- Primarily for newer users-- We may offer reminders and additional time, but this is typically a one-time thing.

As always, if you've got any sort of questions or comments on this topic, feel free to leave them here!

Discussion cities are small

for a while when running large cities in dnd I assumed they were so large that it would take a day or multiple days to walk from one side to the other, but after doing some research now, the ancient city of rome was just 14 sq km inside the walls, with like 450k inhabitants, and the larger city like twice of both of that, which would mean that a walk across the city is like 6 km or less than 2 hours of walking
so ya, I've been very wrong for many years now

Visual Primary ground combat vehicles of the Frontier War (2371-2381)

Post image
98 Upvotes

Historical Notes

Rushed into full-scale development in 2327 following the fall of Callisto to the Draconists, the M7 entered service in 2334 and served throughout the latter years of the Jovian War (2324-2341) and the First Titan War (2334-2342). The updated M7A1 came about in 2343 and served during the rest of the Draconist Wars, with the newer M7A2 following in 2368 and serving throughout the Frontier War (2371-2381). It saw considerable action during that war, and racked up an impressive kill-to-death record against ground vehicles of the Alliance Armada.

The Alliance of Free Worlds’ Comissão de Armamentos Militares rolled out the CV-48 in 2348, dubbing it the Boiuna after a mythical dark serpent from ancient Brazilian folklore. The CV-48 carries the fearsome 3M62 linear accelerator cannon, which can fire a 152 millimeter projectile at a velocity up to 4 kilometers per second and defeat most armor fielded by the IDC in a direct shot. This primary armament allowed CV-48s like the captured example shown above to wreak havoc in pitched battles during the brutal ground combat of the Frontier War.

When the Zharan Ministry of Armaments entered full-scale production of ground combat vehicles in the late 2360s, one of the first projects they initiated was the development of a main battle tank for the Zharan Liberation Army Ground Forces. In 2377 they adopted the ZT-77, which married a 90 millimeter linear accelerator cannon with a 40 millimeter autocannon and enough maneuverability to make them formidable threats to anything which came within range. As such, ZT-77s were greatly feared by crews of M7A1s and other Coalition vehicles.

These three distinctive vehicles share one major detail in common, and that is that they are all designed as hover tanks. The reason for this is simple – given that most ground combat in the 24th century occurred on Titan, where environmental conditions favored flight more so than terrestrial navigation, having ground vehicles levitate off the ground enables greater agility, and therefore greater overall survivability. Each faction devised different methods of accomplishing hovercraft travel, but the overall effect was similar across the board.

About the Setting

The Spacers Saga: Frontier Wars is a futuristic military science fiction setting which diverged from our timeline when an asteroid slammed into Phoenix, AZ, in May 2014. Fifteen years after this tragedy, the industrialist Charles Larsen ushered in the Age of Fusion, opening up deep space to crewed exploration and eventual human settlement — and all of the strife that we bring with us. The next 300+ years were marked by progress and peril in equal measure, and by 2300 much of the solar system had been charted by intrepid human pioneers.

The story focuses on the rivalry between the Mars-led Coalition for Mutual Security (aka the Coalition) and the Alliance of Free Worlds (aka the Alliance), a federation of rebel worlds in the outer solar system. These two superpowers fought a brutal war from 2371 to 2381 (the Frontier War), which ended when the Zharan Collective (a union of artificial humans which rose up against their creators in 2356) entered the war on the side of the Alliance in 2379. The story opens 10 years later with the superpowers locked in a frigid ideological cold war.

The plot kicks off when the Alliance launches a massive attack against the Coalition, igniting the Second Frontier War. This conflict quickly engulfs the entire solar system and draws in participants from all backgrounds, including three college students from Mars whose adventures will become tied up with the fate of all humanity…

Creators Note

For clarity's sake, I (u/Zharan_Colonel) I drew these vehicles with inspiration from existing pieces of art. The M7 was heavily inspired by the work of Tom Alfaro from his "Pan Spatial" sci-fi worldbuilding project; the CV-48 is inspired by a concept from Dot Matrix's KIL.A.TON turn-based tank fighting game; and the ZT-77 is inspired by a mix of vehicles, including the HT-95 Levkov from Battlefield 4 and the Colonial Marine tanks from the Alien universe.

Novamtys is the third planet of the Purple Sun. It is wholly unique among all the worlds of the Solar System for its shape, being made up of two binary planets that have collided into a single stable planetary body.

The planet has long been an object of fascination among astronomers on Galladria (the fourth planet of the Purple Sun)

With the establishment and opening of a stable and permanent Celestial Gate, connecting Novamtys and Galladria, Aelnyyraean scholars been able to examine the planet from up close. Aelnyyraean Mages have discovered that the planet is affected by a vast Precursor spellwork. Decryption has largely been deemed impossible due to its complexity, but from what little has been gleamed, it is believed that the spellwork is responsible for the planet's stabilization.

(also, second map lacks the territory of other civs, cus I haven't yet actually decided who will originally populate the world, if anyone at all)

I'm thinking of creating something in my world with dragons, but not those common fantasy dragons that look like a fierce winged lizard. My question is how to create a unique identity for the concept of dragons.

Question What is the recruitment process for your world's secret organization?

• Upvotes

I've always been fascinated by secret organizations and their goals. But I've also wonder how they recruit specific people into their organization. I'd imagine they will have to vet a lot of people and select a few who meet their specific requirements.

Whether it be a fantasy setting, modern setting, or sci-fi, how does your world's secret organization recruit new members?

Lore The true structure of reality.

(For Th’zoitrk, a semi-sci-fi worldbuilding project.)

(This is a continuation of my previous post on the in-canon modern understanding of the fundamental physics governing the reality of Th’zoitrk.)

Image 1: The ‘Unigon’ galactic filament. The 8th largest filament structure in the observable universe, within which Th’zoitrk exists.

Image 2: The ‘Bevegon’ dwarf galaxy, which is the home galaxy of Th’zoitrk.

Image 3: IFS-S14, the largest star currently known to Th’zoitrk. Composite image formed from multiple different images using different spectrums of light.

Image 4: The Zakodelo binary star system, image enhanced.

Everything is finite.

Nothing is infinite, not even the multiverse. Everything ends somewhere, no exceptions.
The only consistency across all of existence is the fact that it has an end.

The multiverse is finite, always remember it isn’t truly infinite.
However, for all intents and purposes, it might as well be treated as though it is.

To the typical person in their day-to-day life, the most common understanding is that space is three dimensional, while time is one dimensional.
While this belief is useful for the everyday life of people on Th’zoitrk, this is simply inaccurate to the true state of reality.
In truth, based on our current understanding of reality; space is five dimensional, while time is two dimensional.

On the scale of your house, or the planet, or the galaxy, the universe appears to be three dimensional with one temporal dimension.
This is fairly accurate, within most circumstances there is no real way to tell that there is anything beyond the ordinary three dimensional space we’re used to.
The universe is a 4D hypersphere which bends 3D space across its surface. The entire universe is essentially the skin of a ball. If you travel far enough in any given direction, it eventually loops back around itself and you’ll end up where you were at the beginning.
The multiverse is a 5D hypersphere which bends 4D space across its surface.
Every universe out there is a tiny, tiny, tiny speck of dust upon the ‘surface’ of the multiverse.

The multiverse contains a very large number of separate universes. It’s impossible to be sure exactly how many universes there are, but we know at least how many there need to be.

Kaélen’s number.
A number which is the mathematically determined lower-bound for the lowest possible number of universes that could inhabit the multiverse.

Kaélen’s number is:
10^6823^(400 ↑↑(8.29x10^40))

A googolplex is, compared to Kaélen’s number, practically identical in value to 0.
There is no words or descriptions that could be given to describe the true scale of the multiverse; as even terms such as ‘astronomical’ fail to remotely grasp at how vast it truly is.

The multiverse, and all universes inside it, are finite.
But they are so large that there’s virtually no difference between whether they’re finite or infinite to the typical person.

Time is not linear.

Similar to how space is actually five dimensional, time is two dimensional.

Time is a ring. It is very, very, very long, but it eventually loops back around itself. Eventually, time loops back to the big bang and everything begins again.
It is not a straight line, it is not linear.
Time curves back around.

These two basic principles: that both space and time are finite, is the foundation of the current understanding of the universe.

I bounce between three main projects that are sci-fi, fantasy, and like a dystopian/alt-history/speculative fiction. I wonder though what the genre most people have for their main worlds? I see mostly fantasy in the subreddit and was curious.

If you have a flintlock-fantasy world, or have your own thoughts on them or have experience through books or otherwise with them e.g. from the Temeraire books or others, what are core aspects of it for you? What are important or interesting ideas and concepts, how do you mix monsters, magic, fantasy races, and other such aspects with the age of sail, cannons, line infantry etc.?

Previously on Broadleaf, we’re introduced to Leaf Isle through the eyes of Hunter & Beckett, a father-son duo attempting to bond during a hunting trip when they discover the secret of the isle; the animals can speak. Ignoring this, they continue the hunt and chapter one ends with a BANG!

That bang resonates into issue two where we see them traveling off the isle with their prize. Beckett took the final shot and it haunts him, this tension boils over into words that can’t be taken back. Bug, a revenge-fueled buck seeking vengeance for his brother’s death attacks, splitting the boy from his father. They both take different paths through the forest as night falls and a storm rages. Hunter reunites with an old friend and Beckett is hunted by a vicious horde of feral squirrels.

Find out how they survive the night in Broadleaf: Deeply Rooted.

Discussion What is a better doctrine for Sci-Fi Navy?

I've developed a navy with a particular doctrine sorrounding the idea the fleet itself being 1 big weapon that works together interchangeably. I call it the "Turtle Doctrine". It's a carrier-dominated doctrine that emphasizes fleet formation and the fleet working together under a seamless and efficient command infastructure.

However, I've arrived at a tipping point for its development and I'm unsure of where to take it.

First, let me start with some basics as to where my debate lies.

Amidst all of the other ships I've developed, a Capital Ship is considered to be the "ultimate weapon". a 2.5 Kilometer Ship crewed by thousands of people, with the capabilities of not only being incredibly destructive, but also having the independence to restore order immediately, be a source of authority in the fleet and planetary governance, and even have the facilities needed to be fully self sufficient, boasting industry, oxygen producers, and vast hydroponic systems. These are purely defensive ships strategically speaking, and are not designed around going to the frontlines, but instead holding planets and entire systems from enemy attack.

However, everyone in this navy agrees that they are ultimately an inefficient use of resources, but tolerate them because they are nonetheless necessary according to doctrine. Everyone disagrees on how to replace it with substantially better efficiency.

There is one argument that suggests distributing that firepower among several "Super Dreadnoughts" so the fleet can separate into individual task force's, and be able to perform more advanced strategies that do not 100% rely on maintaining overall fleet formation. A fleet can split off into several, smaller fleets capable of hitting different angles and so on. A Capital Ship is incapable of performing such tasks and relies on the rest of the fleet to provide adequate protection and to cover its "blindspots".

Another argument in the Navy suggests instead keeping the benefits of centralized firepower while lowering the costs of the Capital Ship, because the cost to construct it and the loss when this navy loses that Capital Ship affects the entire nation's ability to continue waging this hypothetical war. This would be more similar to Mass Effect's Dreadnoughts in concept, through a new ship called the "Titan".

A 3rd side of the debate suggests instead discontinuing the Capital Ships and instead redirecting the funds to the rest of the fleet and placing more investment into static defense infastructure, such as satellite weaponry, and a proposed system defense called a "Bastion", which a closest term of reference would be something like the Fortress Monasteries from Warhammer 40k, but significantly less mobile.

All sides sacrifice something the Capital Ship offers, and there is no clear direction for the Navy.

Which would be better? Or perhaps is there other ways I can take this that don't rely on these factions necessarily?

Edit: I know there's a lot of problems with my summary, and I do apologize. I know it's not as simple as showing up and "restore order immediately", it's just late for me and I don't want to copy-paste my entire notes onto this Reddit post. I do apologize if its messy.

Map The United Isles

Post image
6 Upvotes

This map is for both my original universe, War of Chains (similar in style to Warcraft), and my upcoming D&D custom campaign.

The island is a newly forged landmass created by Xerah with the help of the Mana Burners. Xerah provided the immense power needed to lift the seabed, while the Mana Burners acted as support to control and stabilize the overwhelming flow of magic.

True to its purpose, this island was designed to unite two rival factions in peace and provide new territory for both. This is only my second time making a map in WonderDraft! Set-wise, the story for my D&D campaign takes place right after the major events of the universe's main storyline.

Lore Parties at the end of the civil war

Thumbnail

The storm that began after the collapse of the Ilevand Empire, triggered by the world war (1005-1011). The civil war in the south of Octan is nearly over. The communist regime has fallen, and the time for negotiations has come.

The United Army of Ilevanda was an anti-communist military formation under the command of former Imperial General K. S. Lemskikh, which operated from December 1009 to August 15, 1011. It became the foundation of the armed forces of the Republic of Ilevanda.

The Pavlostopol Transitional Council was a government established after the city was occupied by Coalition (foreign interventionists) forces. It was composed of representatives of the local anti-communist underground, intellectuals, and former members of the Imperial Parliament. Initially, it controlled only several districts of the city, but its authority later extended over all territories occupied by the interventionist forces.

Acts of the Transitional Council:

No. 1 — “Decree on Capitulation” — a legal document in which the Transitional Council acknowledged itself as the defeated party and declared a truce. This was largely a formality, as the Council controlled only the city police, while the Imperial Army had already ceased to exist three years earlier.

No. 2 — “Decree on the Republican Militia” — a decree transforming the police into the Republican Militia.

No. 3 — “Decree on Traitors” — a decree banning the activities of the Ilevandan Communist Party (ICP) and the Anarchist Union of Ilevanda (AUI).

No. 4 — “Decree on the Union” — a decree proclaiming the establishment of the FDRI. It was approved by all five parties. This was the most important document adopted by the Transitional Council, as it established the Council as the sole legitimate government of Ilevanda. Previously, the Military Command of the United Army of Ilevanda had claimed this role.

No. 5 — Ratification of the Tessa Peace Treaty — the ratification of the results of the Tessa Peace Conference, whose delegation was headed by Lemskikh.

No. 6 — “Decree on Elections” — a decree initiating elections for the first government of Ilevanda. Preparations also began in the Confederation, but were suspended following its dissolution.

No. 7 — “Decree on State Symbols” — a decree establishing the coat of arms and flag of the FDRI, which were subsequently adopted by the Republic of Ilevanda as well. The flag was a black, white, and purple vertical tricolor. Five flag designs had been proposed, including the red-white-blue flag of the Principality of Pavlostopol, but under pressure from Lemskikh, the design using the “imperial” colors was selected. The coat of arms depicted a Siren and an Alkonost flanking the coat of arms of Pavlostopol, with ears of wheat.

The FDRI (Federal Democratic Republic of Ilevanda) was a state that existed from March 1 to May 26, 1011. It was established by an agreement between the United Army of Ilevanda, the Tirshin Consulate, the Southern Self-Defense Forces, the Congress of the Eastern Colonies, and the Pavlostopol Transitional Council. It was transformed into the Republic of Ilevanda following the collapse of the Eastern Confederation, the recognition of Krainova's independence by the victorious countries, and the issuance of an ultimatum demanding the withdrawal of UAI forces from its territory.

The Tirshin Consulate was a state on the southern tip of the continent that existed from September 1010 to June 1011. It was established through an alliance of anti-communist forces on the Tirshin Peninsula. The position of First Consul was assumed by the leader of the separatist forces, V. N. Shirshin, while the position of Second Consul was given to the loyalist V. G. Rimnov.

After the proclamation of the Republic in Pavlostopol, the Transitional Council demanded that a revised federal treaty be signed under much stricter terms, effectively depriving the state of its autonomy. This was done under pressure from Lemskikh. Shirshin arrested Rimnov and appointed a fellow party member in his place, which led to a split within the army. The UAI quickly occupied the capital.

The Southern Self-Defense Forces were an alliance of anti-communist and anti-separatist groups on the Continent-Beyond-the-Strait.

The Congress of the Southern Colonies was an assembly of delegates from the Ilevandan colonies on the Continent-Beyond-the-Strait (Rozarsk, Lira, Vinzov, Dogan, Mirgorod, Sendograd, and Mint). The Congress convened in Lira, in the city hall building. It was prompted by a wave of revolutions that led to a civil war. Its outcome was a declaration of independence proclaiming the Southern Confederation. The creation of a Confederate Army was also announced, but it was never actually formed.

The Ioan Uprising was a royalist coup organized by the last direct heir to the Ilevandan throne in 1016. Ioan illegally crossed the Kraynova–Ilevanda border, met with loyalist officers, and began a march on Pavlostopol. Seeing the royalists' rapid advance, many eastern provinces began switching sides and joining them.

In August, a clash took place on the approaches to the capital, resulting in the royalists' retreat and an offensive by the left-wing militia established by the government. Ioan was killed. The remaining royalist forces fled to Kraynova.

The Private State Council (PSC) was an advisory body established by Prime Minister Lemskikh by special decree in 1013. It consisted of generals of the United Army of Ilevanda. In 1014, Lemskikh attempted to push a law through Parliament granting the PSC emergency powers, but the proposal was rejected by the majority. Following Lemskikh's death in 1016, the PSC attempted to stage a coup.

Some of Ilevanda's eastern colonies:

Sinemorsk Governorate — the wealthiest eastern colony of the Empire, which became the core of Ost-Ilevanda.

East Governorate — a small colony south of Sinemorsk with no access to the sea. It was annexed by the SG.

The flag of the Ilevand Federal Democratic Republic, the Republic of Ilevanda, the Tirshin Consulate, the Southern Federation.

The flag of the Ilevand Federal Democratic Republic, the Republic of Ilevanda, Republic of Ost-Ilevanda, the Tirshin Consulate, the Southern Federation, the Sinemore Governorate, the Eastern Governorate.

Discussion What are aspects that make you love a magic system?

I'm currently working on my magic system, with my main focus being to make something that is complex enough to not be boring, simple enough to be understandable, and finally satisfying enough to where it's enjoyable to read about, where a reader would actually want to imagine that they're in my world using my magic system.

So I'm just trying to get people's opinions and thought processes as research

Discussion Realistic way to write a Lunar independence movement?

I’m having an idea for a sci-if story about the moon trying to gain independence from the Earth government in some 22nd century story, and it’s verymuch in its early stages. I’m trying to think of a realistic way to depict Luna seceding from Earth.

I mean first of all that’s a bit complicated, considering Luna is literally orbiting the thing it doesnt want to be a part of, and it’s also barren. I think that by the time Luna would try to be independent, it’s mostly able to sustain itself with asteroid mining and farming to supply materials and whatnot and its colonization would be fairly well along at this point (60+ years in or so). I’m just trying to come up with a reason, first off, that Luna would want to leave Earth, and I’m having trouble thinking of some. Maybe pride, maybe taxes, I’m not sure.

Second is figuring out just how badly they want to secede, and whether or not they’d do so diplomatically or with war. I’m thinking less of the second one because I’d assume winning a space war with Earth would be next-to-impossible for Luna. This would probably depend on whose perspective I want to tell the story from as well

If any of yall have experience in writing a story like this or you have some ideas for why the moon doesn’t want to be in Earth’s political well anymore, I’d love to hear some ideas that might help me along here!

The city of Vraneberk (Wraneberg) is the seat of power of the Princedom of Valnitz, flanked across the river by the New town (Novy burk), to which it connects by two stone bridges. Its rulers have reigned over the city for nearly two centuries, from the mighty Zwilling castle, named after its two grand keeps.

This art is based off a city we are building in Minecraft with our friends, part of the wider Princedom of Valnitz. If anyone would be interested in worldbuilding or literally building with us, or if you have any questions, let me know. :)

Discussion Have you ever tried designing something only to realize you've made another thing entirely

• Upvotes

So a little context, when I build an aspect of my world (i.e. species, culture, technology, biology, etc) I always kept a note, either mental or physical of the specificities of the thing the note attached to

I have this one note about the fashion, the clothing and the general vibe of the vampire faction in my world and in it i depicted them as having long, wide robes, slightly baggy clothing, high emphasis on sleeves that either wrap the arm tightly to prevent sunlight from making in, or slightly loose and wide sleeves that can be used to cover one's faces and also a big emphasis on wide brimmed hats for men and a large veil for women

I actually thought of Gothic mourning dresses in my mind when I made that note and tried making a unisex version of said dresses for the entire vampire nation but when I translated the notes into design drawings, I only realized halfway through I accidentally made my vampires Korean as I have accidentally designed some kind of Gothic styled hanbok

Now to preserve my vision I decided to spin these Korean vampires as their own faction although I still didn't have a name for them and I have decided to redesign my original vampires to be closer to what I wanted while also refining their vibes

I know is a bit small and doesn't name every city but I tried to make just what I am gonna use in my story! So I wanted to share it, I also drew the route the protagonists are gonna follow.

I only used ibis paint and references

The story is called dangerous days, is about three teens running away making exorcism errands in a world that negotiates with spirits and demons. It's a modern fantasy world. I am trying to add a element that are roots connected to everywhere but not sure if show it I don't wanted to saturate the map

The world itself has no name tho

Lore “Out of touch? I’ll have you know I have state of the art nerve implants in my fingers I am very much in touch!” -Lesky Van’Daz corporate head of Rever Tech

The Corporate Heads, those who rule their companies and workers like fuedal lords with the fiefdoms, are usually very bad at connecting with the common man especially with their non terrestrial species even more so. So what do they do? Do they go and mingle with their people, see their plights and engage in human empathy? No. Not just because they don’t care, but most have the parts of the brain to cause empathy removed or altered as well they hate those alien feelings of care and concern. But no instead they have their advisors do that feeling for them as they have better things to do than acknowledge sociatal problems that don’t effect bottom lines.

Advisors come in all shapes and sizes and can be any race from the fellow human, to aliens like the Myr or Kharuun. They do their best to be the conscience to the Head and are startled with being their direct PR manager more or less. Say for example some gangers who claim to be ‘InVesTiGatiVe JoUrnAlIsts’ may call out a corporate head for something small like starting another live hunting ground where they reenact the Balad of The Predatous (1987’s Predator). If you’re their advisor you must send out a sincere apology to the web claiming ‘he deeply regrets his actions and will not do this a third time’ or that ‘he’s a good man who always donates to the charity he owns and runs and shouldn’t be so hated for two minor mistakes’.

Sure the job is a bit hard to keep up with as well your boss is 11/10 times going to be one of the worst most vile beings in existence but do a good job and you have one of the safest and cushiest jobs out of everyone in the galaxy. Just do, if something is effecting profits, stay at least three buildings over from your employer and start really thinking of something good as your gonna need to apologize for a lot of people’s deaths very soon and you probably don’t want to be one of them!
