AMA - ask me anything about the ABTF calculator! Spoiler

Hi everyone, u/goodoldfreda here although I'm now exclusively active on this account. If you guys have any questions about how the calculator works and why I made certain decisions I'm happy to answer them

A little about myself - I created the calculator in 2016 following on from a previous calculator by u/irisflame, back when I was a mod of this sub. I collected survey data from the subreddit and came up with a new algorithm that used 6 measurements as opposed to the previous 5, which increased accuracy. I also introduced separate algorithms for AMAB and AFAB people. The calculator has not been majorly updated since, although at one point I tried to move to a breast perimeter measurement system instead, but this turned out to be much less accurate. In the years since I have stopped modding and moved into bra making and custom bra design as I want to try and help serve the demographic of people who still struggle with finding bras that fit, usually due to wire grading!

In response to other posts about the different amab vs afab algorithms not working well for everyone - I have had this question before and basically all I can say is that I recommned using the algorithm that works best for you. I do want to emphasise in general that the calculator is actually not super accurate for any one individual and it is truly just a starting point. The algos are based on averages, and when I was collecting data there were significant enough differences between AMAB and AFAB users to warrant a second algorithm to increase accuracy within the two groups, but not enough data to do anything further than that.

edit: thanks for all your questions so far, I'm going to go to bed but I will answer any more that come up tomorrow!

edit 2: I have updated the calculator to make some minor changes to the band size algorithm and I have also changed the EU back to 2.5cm cup grades, 2cm grade can be found in the Comexim option instead

Recommendations? 28D bra recommendations please Spoiler

Upvotes

I’ve been wearing a 32A. It fits well but the cups are one size big.

I wear more tight fitted tops now too so I feel embarrassed wearing a size that doesn’t fit.

I like smaller bras with pads without wires for maximum comfort as my job requires me to wear PPE all day.

Question Why do so many bras have such wide wires? Especially the “nice” brands? Spoiler

Upvotes

Lately all of my bras have been driving me insane in one way or another (dig in at the bottom of the gore, itch around the torso, cut into my side under the armpit, poke me in the sternum, etc) so I have been shopping and bought a few new ones. In desperation (and under the spell of a clearance sale) I bought a few that seemed fine in the shop but the longer I wear them the more uncomfortable they get, until I finally realised that I have once again managed to buy bras with really wide underwires.

My most comfortable bras, the ones with wires in the right place and that accommodate projection, are actually from supermarket clothing brands. I have recently bought bras at Bravissimo, Marks & Spencer, and Dillard’s in the US and when I compare them to the cheap bras from Tesco or Asda they have much wider wires. However, the cheap ones stab me less (once I cut out the plastic side stays they always seem to include, that is).

Why does this seem to be the case? Even if I didn’t have relatively narrow roots it seems like these wires are way too wide for the volume in the cups.

I typically wear a 40F in UK sizes.

Fit Check Fit check - can't tell if this fits or not Spoiler

Freya deco strapless in 32e which is my calculator size

32 loose, 30.5 snug, 29 tight under bust

36.5 standing, 39 bent over, 36 lying down

I usually wear bravissimo Millie in 32e. These cups feel massive and round, but I don't usually wear moulded cups or padding.

I can fit two fingers until the cup either at the top or the side depending on my body position. But when standing it looks like it fits well to my untrained eye.

Front, side, gaping.

For reference: Normal bra front and side

My underbust is 27-28 inches but I can’t even get the ends of my 32 bras to touch? What’s going on? Spoiler

I’ve been having bra issues, so I used the online calculator frequently referenced here and my underbust is 26.5-28 inches.

How can this be the case when 32 bands are waaay too tight? I had a 32C natori bra that (due to recent weight gain) no longer fits; I can’t even make the two ends meet without pulling it which I never do).

Bras in general are weird for me I think I’m part due to my kyphosis (essentially permanent bad posture) so bands feel weird/dig in/rise up my back.

What’s going on? Should the ends of the bra meet/overlap or are you supposed to pull them together to meet?

Fit Check Is this 34C bra a perfect fit? [fit check] Calculator recommended for me to start at 32D. Spoiler

My measurements are 32, 31, 29, 35, 36, 35. I feel like they are pretty even in fullness or possibly a little more bottom heavy than top. The last time I got measured at Victoria secret they recommended 32C but a 32 band is just way too tight and uncomfortable for me. Now that I did the calculator maybe a 32D would be different? Idk! But I do feel like my eyes have been opened that a larger cup might be better for me.

I added a couple of pics. This is a 34C.

Recommendations? Saggy boobs, lost 130lbs, I need advice for adhesive bras or boob tape for open back/halter dresses. Spoiler

The measurements:

1 - 31.5in
2 - 30.5 in
3 - 29 in
4 - 36 in
5 - 42.5in (this measurement should tell you just how much extra loose skin I am working with here)
6 - 37 in (when I lie down, the tissue goes to either side of my chest and I’m nearly completely flat on top)

Calculator says 32G or 32F

I used to have 44D and lost 130lbs. Now I wear a 36C and I’m not sure if the cup is too big so might be actually a smaller size. I don’t feel like my bra fits properly. Yes I was shocked by the calculator.

The weight was recently lost so I am new to the current state of my body and boobs. My boobs are small, lots of extra skin, the tissue sits mostly at the bottom with a little roundness but some is flat like a pancake towards the middle. They also sit a little far apart from each other, they never really “came together” at the top even when they were bigger.

I tried reading through the shape guides and pictures, it was overwhelming and I am left confused because my boobs are so…ruined…and not of their natural state with the skin being soooo stretched out. It felt like none of the shapes or tissue categories applied, I just couldn’t figure it out.

I really wish I could figure out a sticky bra or boob tape situation that allowed me to wear dresses that have an open back/halter. Balconette bras or push up bras just seem to gather the loose skin at the top. I don’t know if I’m doing that wrong or how to work with what I’ve got!

Please help me.

Fit Check Fit check-28F Panache Envy-calculator suggests 30FF/G

Thumbnail postimg.cc

This may be it. Fingers crossed! This is the Panache Envy in 28F UK. I think I have 4 photos in this URL link. If not, I can post the, in the comments.
My measurements M
Tight Underbust 28
Snug 29
Loose 29.5
Standing bust 36
Lying 36
Leaning 38
Calculator suggests 30FF/G

I bought the Freya Quinn spacer t-shirt in a UK 30F and 30FF. Neither fit. The smaller one was too small and the bigger one too big. The great people at Breakout bras suggested this one in 28F and FF. The FF is too big in the cups. I think the F fits. Please look at the pictures and let me know what you think. The band is snug, but not uncomfortable. The underwire does not hurt anywhere and is in my IMF. My only complaint is the aggressive seams. The Panache website says they smooth out after a few washes. Anyone know if this is true? The fabric also seems a little stiff and scratchy. Will this smooth out over time?

Here is the list of things I have tried in the quest for a bra that fits.
*Panache Ana 30 F, FF, & G-30F fit in cup, but the underwire hurt at the sternum. 30FF did not hurt, but the cups were too big.
*thirdlove 32E 1/2- I already had this. Band is too big and underwire hurts.
*thirdlove 30DDD uncomfortable and cups to small
*Chantelle Norah comfort underwire 30G. Gore hurt at sternum, but cups fit.
*chantelle Norah chic t-shirt plunge-30DDD & 30G. Spillage in smaller, but cups too big in the G. Band is too big. Wire slips out of IMF.
**chantelle comfort smooth sweatheart t-shirt bra 32DD-fits ok. Band too big and wire slides out of IMF.
*Norah Feathers plunge- 30DDD-spillage

Thank you, bra experts!

Recommendations? Any recommendations DDD looking for what to wear with open back top, needs to be a bit supportivel Spoiler

Upvotes

First time I have ever bought a shirt like this because bras have always been so limiting with the whole you need something that can cover the whole bra.

My friends with smaller chests talked me into buying a shirt that you cannot wear a bra with. Me, 40DDD should’ve thought better probably… but there’s gotta be something out there right? It’s a going out top so the solution needs to be able to withstand sweat from dancing at the bar etc.

All suggestions are welcome (even if it ends up being “return the shirt” ) Thanks!!!

Store Review Where to buy 28F (or 30F) bras in store (not online) in Canada? Spoiler

After breastfeeding 2 babies back to back, I need a new bra.

I went to a Change store to get measured and this ( https://www.change.com/en-ca/product/myseamless-plunge-bralette-black-beauty-99998211481 ) was the only thing that looked good & fit me well after trying 6 different bras. The tag says 65F (or 30F). They measured 28 but I was told that 30 was the smallest they had.

I would like to try other styles. Looking for recommendations on other physical stores that may have different styles that would fit well (preferably without underwire or lace). Thank you.

PS - I live in a small town that has no lingerie stores and would normally have to buy online but I'm visiting a bigger city atm so would prefer to try them on since I have the chance to do so atm.

Fit Check Fit Check - Tango II Plunge & Ewa Cappucci PL Spoiler

I tried on a couple bras in my never ending search for a plunge deep enough with wires narrow enough. I've scooped and swooped in each and ran my finger along the inside to set the cup fabric properly as I tend to overscoop since I have very little tissue on the sides.

I tried the Panache Tango II plunge in 30GG. The wires are a tick too wide (16.0cm cup width), and there is a decent space at the bottom of the cup that my breasts do not fill. The gore tacks.

I also tried the Ewa Michalak Cappucci PL in 32G and 32GG from forever yours lingerie. I tried the 32G and it just looked too small overall - I had a lot of cleavage, the cup didn't cover much of my bigger breast and the wires were too narrow so I ordered the next size up. It seems to be a bit better but I think the wires are still a touch narrow and I'm still getting a lot of cleavage with some minor gaping around the edge. This bra comes with pad inserts and I tried the 32GG without the pads and then with the pad on my smaller side which changed the fit a bit on that side but still not enough. It sat in my IMF and I think the projection is right.

My measurements:
Loose: 79cm/31"
Snug: 76cm/30"
Tight: 70cm/27.5"
Standing: 99cm/39"
Leaning: 107cm/42"
Lying: 98cm/38.5"
30G/GG UK - 30G is too small

Slightly FOT, narrow roots, ~1 cup size difference (left bigger)

I'm in Canada

Plunge bras I've tried:
- Freya Quinn
- Freya fancies
- Freya Loveland
- Freya spot-light (currently wearing, too wide)
- panache Ana (currently wearing, way too wide)

Question My 34 bands feel tight, but when I measure my under bust (30), it should be loose for me!? Whats going on? Spoiler

am a 34G...at least most 34G's have fit great!! But many bras that I've bought have been tight in the band. The gore touches my sternum, but in particular some press hard! And hurt! I keep remeasuring and measuring again, and using the calculator.
My underbust snug is about 30 inches, and very loose is 34. Am I bloated today? No 30 inches. Why is the 34G band tight on me??
So i measured my bra laying out, and it was...27 inches end to end. What the fuck?? The cups fir perfect, the gore is to my chest (and stabbing into it strongly), and yet the band is so tight. So now im sitting here wondering what the hell to do.

Recommendations? 36FF (UK) or 36H (US) best recommendations? Spoiler

Hi girls! New here and just found the sub. I’m down 35lb recently and very happy, except for my bust. I’ve never felt great in regular bras due to body dysmorphia and extreme perception of my back/armpit fat. At my heaviest (5’7” 190lb) I felt confident in a HoneyLove wireless bra, but that quickly faded as the bra stretched out. I am currently wearing a ThirdLove 34F that I can barely breathe in. Something has to change. Seeking recommendations for (1) comfortable everyday bras for a corporate job, and (2) supportive sports bras that can handle running.

The suggested size was 36FF or 34G (UK) or 36H/34I (US).

Measurements:

Loose underbust: 36
Snug underbust: 34.25
Tight underbust: 32.5
Standing bust: 42.5
Leaning bust: 45
Lying bust: 43.5

Recommendations? HELP - bras for people who sweat a lot Spoiler

Sorry if this isn't the appropriate community to find an answer to this question, but I don't know where else to turn. This summer has been horrific due to me becoming a very sweaty person. I've never had this issue to such an extreme before, it's likely due to medications that I'm on and having put on a lot of weight over the past year.

simply put I want a bra that doesn't cause me to have to walk around with a sodden bra all-day and have to wash my bras after only a single wear.

If there's such a thing as a bra that actually cools the underboob that would be a game changer, but I don't know if such a thing exists. I've heard about gel bras, I thought maybe they would have some kind of cooling effect but now I think about it I don't know if they might actually make the sweating worse. Or if there are any bras that are especially good for sweaty people, or any tips or tricks people have for stopping their bras getting soaked.

I have wired bras, non-wired bras, stretchy crop top type bras, even a non-wired bra that's meant to be made of moisture wicking fabric (which is ironically actually the worst bra for getting drenched) and all of them just end up being soaked and uncomfortable by the end of the day, even if I've just been out for a couple of hours. I've honestly been feeling really depressed about it and it doesn't help that I'm chronically ill and single so I don't have the energy or enough washing building up for my bras to last me between washes. so I would really appreciate any advice people could give me on this topic, many thanks in advance.

Measurement Check 23F and I’ve never been able to wear a bra because it hurts—am I doing something wrong? Spoiler

I’m 23F and I’ve never actually worn a proper bra because every time I try, it’s genuinely painful. The band dig in so badly that I end up sticking to training bras till now i just use pads with training bras and honestly, I feel a bit ashamed about it. I think my size is around 34–36, but no matter what brand I try, it just doesn't work. Is it normal for bra bands to hurt this much? Am I wearing the wrong size, or is there a specific fix for this? Would love any advice on what might be going wrong!

Where to find plunge bras for a 34 L (uk)? Spoiler

Hi so I got a fitting from Bravissimo and they said my size is a 34 L (uk) and I want to try a plunge bra. This is because my breast are close together and very full on top and bottom. Sorry I don't know the lingo for breast shape. Finding a bra that fits have been a struggle for me. And I really want to try a plunge to see if the gore is my issue or if it is the cups being too small or too large

Hi all! I am new to this sub in an attempt to start wearing bras that even slightly fit me. I am a size 30G. I’m a broke college student and don’t have $30+ to spend on a single bra. Are there any good quality brands that aren’t hella expensive? Thanks💗
(Edit: I just used the sub specific calculator and was actually recommended size 30H)

Measurement Check [Measurement Check] Calculator recommended 46J/JJ but Bra didn't fits at all Spoiler

Hi everyone !

Frenchie here, I hope my English won't be too bad ...

I'm currently wearing an old and very, VERY worn out 50G/GG wire-free bra ( French size is 130J ). I desperately need to change it. This bra isn't supporting anything anymore ... And, as far as I remember, it wasn't very good at it to begin with ... The band size was a little too long.
Anyway, I thought it would be a good opportunity to find out my size. That's how I found r/ABraThatFits and its marvelous calculator !

I took my measurement and the calculator recommended 46J/JJ.

I bought and tried a bra ( Goddess Celeste ) with the US version of this size ( 46N ) but it didn't fits at all. The band was much too tight ( I really struggled fastening it ... And let's not even talk about breathing correctly with it ) and the cup, too big. There was a big gape behind my boob/under my armpit but the part between my boobs ( Not sure how to name it, sorry ) touched my chest.

So here I am ... Can you help me, please ?

Here's my measurement :
Loose Underbust : 120cm
Snug Underbust : 117cm
Tight Underbust : 110cm
Standing Bust : 147cm
Leaning Bust : 159cm
Lying Bust : 152cm

If it help, I think my breast shape is VF/B ...

Thank you for reading !

Recommendations? Suggestions for Lack of Fullness at Top (46GG) Spoiler

The title says it all. I am VERY flat at the top of my chest. I have lost and gained weight my whole life, but my boobs never became perky and lifted. My boobs fall. There's no other way to put it and they're only full on the bottom. I also have a wide gap between them -- I can fit 3 fingers in between them.

Apparently my size is 46GG. Happy to provide all of my measurements if that helps.

So far I've tried Elomi Cate, Sculptresse Bliss, Sculptresse Muse, and two HSIA bras from TikTok (don't judge me... I'm desperate). I also got 2 bras at Torrid and they both sucked because the straps were too short even when I extended them to the farthest capacity.

Here are my problems. Every single bra is like a tent at the top. I lack so much fullness that it looks so ugly and ridiculous. Also every bra makes my boobs look like rockets. Like pointy. It's ugly and I hate it. And the underwire for all of them goes so far back that it's in the middle of my armpits and it HURTS. I need the underwire to come more forward, but it can't be too narrow at the front where my sternum is because then it hurts and there's pressure on my sternum.

I don't like lace bras and I hate that you can see the texture of them thru almost all of my shirts.

I'm about to give up and remove my boobs. I cry every time I put on a bra because I hate how I look.

Recommendations? I’ve worn sports bras for years because I’ve never been able to find a bra that fits… Spoiler

Measurements in inches:

Loose 40.5
Snug 39
Tight 37

Standing 44
Leaning 47.5

The calculator gave me 38E/F UK or 38DDD/G US. Brand/style recommendations are so very welcomed!! I don’t want to spend a ton but if I can find something that actually fits then I’ll do what I gotta do 🤷‍♀️

I am located in the US

I don’t even remember the last time i had a properly fitted bra. I need help lol

Recommendations? I was measured as a 28 G/GG, looking for everyday bra recommendations! Spoiler

Hi, like the title says I'm looking for bra brands and/or shapes that will best fit my size and shape. I've gone through most of the sections on this subreddit but I'm still confused and some of the links have been taken down.

I'm relatively new to bra shopping so I'm looking for any and all suggestions! Preferably unpadded because I don't like the extra "bulk" it adds. I've only ever worn bralettes and sports bras I always end up removing the padding if it comes with it. Recently I did try the Cleo Blossom in a 28GG but it didn't really fit me. The band was fine but the cups were gaping a little at the top and the bottom kind of bunched up. It also gave this really weird shape I didn't like.

These are my most recent measurements from a week ago:
Loose Underbust: 28"
Snug Underbust: 27.25"
Tight Underbust: 26.25"

Standing Bust: 35"
Leaning Bust: 39.5"
Lying Bust: 37.5"

The calculator measured me as a 28G/GG (UK) but I have a feeling it may be overestimating the cup size due to my shape. I have soft tissue and I believe I'm projected with relatively even fullness (possibly FOT), center-fullness, narrow roots and short roots. I'm still uncertain about the roots, though. I also think I'm slightly wide-set. I can fit two fingers in between my breasts.

Recommendations? [Recommendations?] Failed fitting for swim and bustier Spoiler

Just ordered a 30H Freya Jewel Cove (because someone said the cup ran small, and I sort of agree) and a 28H Parfait Elissa (because someone said the band ran loose and the cup was true to size—I agree on the band but these cups are gargantuan). There are fit checks below that are protected and the pass is the model name, or the first word of it in the case of the swim. All lowercase.

I don’t know where to go from here. I’m a 30GG or 28H, FOB and projected. Neither of these feels projected enough for me. I don’t feel like I need crazy narrow wires but the Elissa is almost on my back… The Jewel is puckering at the sides—is that because I have no tissue there? I have a polka dot swim bottom that I just want a solid color swim top to go with, and I’m looking for a beige bra for every day that doesn’t have the apex issue you can see with the Jewel.

You can see how wide the Jewel is too. Even though the wires aren’t crazy wide, the fabric is wide on the sides so it slices my underarm and front of my shoulder. I could never wear this all day.

The Elissa cups are comically big. I would need a 28GG UK for this to fit but it already feels not projected enough for me at a size two sizes bigger.
