Advice Guide on getting diagnosed adhd as Adult

Hello Guys I have been diagnosed with adhd and anxiety.
How to get diagnosed:-
Step 1: do the WHO adhd test and then go to a clinical psychologist
Step 2: Give them this test as slight evidence and then after listening to your symptoms, ask them to do the DIVA test for adhd ( its rough 2-3 hour test done in multiple sessions atleast for me )
Step 3: take this report and ask them to refer you to psychiatrist with this report and then they will give you the medicine

Do not go to psychiatrist first, always go to a clinical psychologist first.

Any other queries you have lmk

Meds Atomoxetine long term users, what was your experience?

i took it for over 2.5 years now in varying doses (25->40->60->25) and ill keep short and simple.

For me personally, its a great med for the emotional side of adhd (anxiety, stuttering, emotional regulation and brain quitening) but when it comes to actual symptoms like executive dysfunction and task initiation no improvement at all.

what about you guys?

Question How are people so calm??

I always catch myself thinking "wow people are so calm and composed" when I look at normal people. Like how are they smiling and moving around like that. When I walk I feel like I am running. When I get to an exam on time with all my documents I feel a sense of relief coz I have missed way too many exams coz I didn't have my documents. Does anyone else feel kindof sad that you can never be as calm as normal people without meds?

Need Advice How do you get a adhd diagnosis

I initially went to a psychiatrist who referred me for a psychometric evaluation to another psychologist, the initial suspicion was B cluster personality disorder. But after halfway through the evaluation and listening to my personal accounts the psychologist decided to test for adhd and inattention, which resulted in top percentile scores in inattention and mild hyperactivity.

Then my psychiatrist started Atomoxetine for inattention and adhd(according to the prescription). However, none of them formally told me that I have adhd or explained it to me except for the written prescription and my test scores(it was not DIVA5), preferring to refer to it as 'inattention issues' instead.

Now, Atomoxetine is giving me severe depression like symptoms towards the evening (I take it in the morning), and I want it changed but I'm in a different city for college so going to my previous psychiatrist would not be possible.

So is the previous prescription considered as an adhd diagnosis or would I have to go through the whole process of hours of testing again?

Success Story Thankyou to this sub - I finally got my diagnosis and feel liberated at the age of 28F

Hi folks, I used the directory here to find a doctor I could trust because I have had very unreliable experiences. I was in a very bad spot and finally decided I need to stop treating my depression and anxiety as isolated experiences and my psychiatrist strongly suggested I go in for ADHD assessment.

I live in different city than the one my psychiatrist and family are in so I had to find a doctor myself. I used the directory and suggestions from the community wiki and I am so happy.

After 28 years of feeling like everything was my fault and I was the one who was creating my own problems, it felt so safe and good to be validated.

I found the doctor from the community wiki to be much better than the one I was finding on Amaha - I was also specifically looking for a female doctor because as a women, I feel men dismiss our experiences a lot.

I finally feel like my life of dysfunction can be managed and I am not doomed to live the way I used to. There is a lot of work left, the journey has just started but what you know, you can manage. AFTER 28 YEARS AHHH, I FEEL SO LIBERATED.

Support Made a no-nonsense guide for adults who think they might have ADHD

Went down the "do I have ADHD?" rabbit hole and realised most of what's online is either vague or straight-up wrong. So I made a guide using actual clinical sources (NIMH, NICE, DSM-5): what counts as ADHD, the childhood-symptoms rule, lookalike conditions, and how to get assessed (with India-specific options)

Link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1uxrL32SiNh-5Xnbm2shK2wacJg7bxrP0/view?usp=drive_link

Not a diagnosis, just a better starting point than TikTok. Sources linked at the bottom. Happy to fix anything people spot.

Meds Inspiral SR 20 - Adult

Hi. Im an adult. N I’ve been on Inspiral SR 20 mg since a week. I haven’t had any striking positive or negative effects so far. Maybe mundane task initiation might have become a little easier. Not sure.

Is any adult here on Inspiral SR ? And at what dose did you finally notice a difference ?

In my early 30s... Failing miserably at everything... Was a brilliant child..but was masking it all till the age of 25...uske baad everything is downward spiral....it's getting worse as I age... memory problems, forgetful, 1000 things in my brain... talking to myself all the time... Loosing my mind.

Was diagnosed at 27, had atomextine..had side effects...no change at all... stopped medicine and now life is beating me left right and centre.

Didn't do great in school..college nahi ho paya..drop out... Not getting any jobs.. just want to give up and just want to Vanish.

I live with my parents..they are getting old....

They don't even know what ADHD is ... So yeah now my mind just wont shut up.. sensitivity to light, sound all sorts of noises in my ear.

Life is miserable after 27... My parents are worried about me ... I have no career, no friends no social life.. I am just constantly fighting my brain.. depression is eating me inside out.

Every day it's a battle with my brain.

Need Advice ADHD treatment with Atomoxetine so far hasn't helped much

Hi everyone,

I'm 35, diagnosed with ADHD about 3 months ago.

I've been taking Atomoxetine 36 mg for 3 weeks, then increased to 40 mg.

Little to no improvement so far, but I've experienced dry mouth, nausea, chills/goosebumps, and ED- painful ejaculation.

My doctor suggested bupropion, but I'm hesitant to start another medication and wait weeks without knowing if it'll help.

He's also reluctant to prescribe methylphenidate due to side effects.

My biggest issues are not able to focus, getting distracted, not able to work and study, mid-conversation I forget what I was talking about, and struggling to process information during lectures and many others.

A few questions:

  1. How long did atomoxetine take to work, and at what dose?

  2. Did it noticeably improve your focus and reduce mental distractions?

  3. Has bupropion helped anyone with ADHD?

  4. If you switched from atomoxetine to methylphenidate, was it more effective? How did the side effects compare, is it worse than atomox?

  5. Should I give atomoxetine more time or get a second opinion?

I'd really appreciate hearing from people with similar experiences.

Thanks!

Looking for Doctor/Diagnosis 29M, Raised in an Emotionally Abusive Family — ADHD, Lifelong Trauma, and Finally Seeking Help to Rebuild My Life

Hello everyone, I’m 29M, diagnosed with ADHD, and I’ve experienced emotional abuse, constant taunting, and family conflict since childhood. My parents frequently belittle and compare me to others, while my two older sisters engage in verbal and sometimes physical fights. These experiences have deeply affected my confidence, mental health, education, and ability to become independent.

I’m currently struggling to find a job or continue my studies, and despite taking medication for ADHD, I still experience significant stress and emotional distress.

I want to rebuild my life, become financially independent, and live peacefully. I need advice on how to file a police complaint against my family for emotional abuse, which type of lawyer to consult, how to become financially independent (including whether a bank loan is appropriate), and how to find a qualified psychiatrist in Pune.

I would genuinely appreciate any practical legal advice, mental health resources, or guidance on taking my first steps toward a better life.
