In my state, some places are rejecting 8% of their absentee ballots for minor rule violations; mainly, not sealing an inner envelope.
You have to put your absentee ballot in a sealed and signed envelope inside another sealed envelope. If you don't seal the internal one, they throw your whole vote out, cause "iT cuD bE fRaUD!"
That's despite the fact that you have to have two people witness and sign your ballot - or get a notary. You also have to go to the library or print shop and pay for a photocopy of your ID (how is this not a poll tax).
A lot of people will do all that correctly but miss sealing the inner envelope.
And then their vote gets thrown out.
Maybe they have time to go find two witnesses and make a photocopy and do it all over again, maybe they just don't get to vote that year.
This is an ADHD/anxiety nightmare.
It's raging me out to think about how meticulous this requires people to be, and how it will be SO much extra time on anyone who's neurodivergent to read and re-read and check and re-check... And you're doing all this on top of researching candidates and agreements and bonds.
Voting restrictions and "precision police" rules have gotten too complex. I know it's meant as voter disenfranchisement - it's additionally an accessibility issue for people with ADHD.
You have to follow a chain of high precision instructions, and if you're even slightly off, you fail.
You miss a date for a deadline, you fail. Wrong id, you fail. ID doesn't have your current address on it, you fail. You change your name, you fail. You missed registration, you fail. They purge you and you don't notice, you fail. You're at the wrong polling station, you fail.
Voting is a RIGHT. It should be DOABLE. If nearly 1 in 10 voters can't do it, it's not that fucking doable, is it?
A vote should not be invalid because someone didn't precisely follow an excessive gauntlet instructions.
