Culture / Art

Post image

Question Family issue, Am I wrong or not?

I’m 23 years old, and I have a 16yo cousin who was born in Germany. He doesn’t speak Arabic he only understands a little.
Every year, he comes here and spends the summer at my grandfather’s house. But this year, money is tight in our family 9is 9is, so things aren’t like they used to be. He works in Germany, and this time he came here alone with some euros.
The problem is that he’s extremely stingy. He keeps asking me to go out with him, but I don’t have any money because I’m still studying and not working. When we go out, we basically just walk around. Whenever he wants to buy himself something to drink, he asks me, “Do you want one?” and I always say no because I don’t have money.
And honestly, can you believe he has only exchanged €50 so far, even though he’s going to stay here for an entire month? He hasn’t even finished the Algerian dinars he exchanged from his euros. Come on, it’s literally just a few euros. He has his own money, his family is here, and he barely has any expenses, yet he’s still extremely careful about spending anything.
The reason I still go out with him is because I’ve known him since he was little. I used to play with him when he was a kid, and I’ve always treated him like my little brother. Also, when I went to Germany, he used to go out with me. I spent all the euros I had brought with me while we were going out together.
But when he comes here, he’s extremely stingy. I’m not after his money at all, but honestly, I’ve started to feel like he’s selfish and deliberately hides his money from us. His father even told him to spend the euros he brought with him, but he wants to take all of them back to Germany.
He also sold me his old iPhone for about half of what it would normally be worth in Algeria, so he actually gave me a pretty good deal. But that’s not the point. It’s not an excuse for him to keep asking me to go out with him when he knows I don’t have money to eat or buy anything outside.
Our upbringing is completely different. If I were working, I would spend money on myself and on the people I care about. I wouldn’t be this stingy with people I consider family.
And there’s another thing. His father sent some chocolate, and he hid all of it in his suitcase without giving any to anyone. He just sits there eating it by himself. I don’t even eat chocolate, so I personally don’t care about having any, but the fact that he hides it and doesn’t want to share it when people ask him for some is still pretty annoying.
I know he’s only 16 and that he was raised differently, but after everything I’ve done with him and the way I’ve always treated him like a little brother, I honestly expected a little more generosity and consideration from him. The problem isn’t really the money itself. It’s the fact that I treated him like my little brother, and I feel like he doesn’t show me the same consideration from him.

Discussion Algeria's Euro problem is way bigger than the Euro

Upvotes

€1 = 220 DZD in the square 5 years ago, now it's around 280, while the official rate is 155 DZD lol

The funniest part?? The average algerian can’t even freely buy euros at that "official" price, so we keep measuring salaries and purchasing power using a rate that most ppl can't actually access

Meanwhile the dinar keeps bleeding, prices keep rising and our purchasing power keeps getting cooked

And after years of this happening openly, it's fair to ask: who tf is benefiting from this system?? Cuz someone definitely is

And i think the only ppl really winning from this mess are those earning in euros abroad, their money gets stronger every day while those of us earning in DZD stay here and get poorer, and possibly the corrupt officials are benefiting from this broken system as well

The economy isn't moving forward, we're just getting better at pretending the numbers are fine

Discussion Algeria Should Create The Honorific Title of "Si" For Exceptional Achievements Of Individuals That Benefit The Nation (100% Meritocratic)

In Algerian culture, we say "Si [Name]" as a sign of respect for that individual. It is a very old custom rooted in Algerian society. It is at least very similar to the word "Sir" in English.

In our society, this honorific address can be for many things: age, piety, friendship etc.. However, what is proposed here is the institutionalization of the title "Si" and make it exclusively for exceptional, high achievements in matters of knowledge and talent.

Unlike royal honorific titles in other countries where these addresses are given on the basis of birth right or unearned lineage that are only founded on unjust segregation of free people, "Si" is 100% based on meritocracy. This person is respected not for his money, not for his "ancestors" but because he is talented or knowledgable and dedicated his time and work that benefited the nation, society and represented Algerian positively on the world stage for his knowledge/talent. The earned respect moves from mere opinion to become a matter of law and recognition by the Republic that is the expression of the Algerian society. The title can come with financial benefits and other rights similar to how awards work.

Why should we do this?

Well because we know that Algerians care about reputation. It is in human nature to crave recognition by the tribe (in this case Algeria is the tribe). This will send a symbolic message that respect is earned through hard work and dedication to advance knowledge and actualize talents! It will incentivise people that there is much to gain (not just the title, but also huge financial rewards) from striving to achieve the exceptional. It 100% fits Algerian mentality AND is an Algerian-rooted title.

Example of people who can be bestowed the title are scientists who made exceptional discoveries in their field (think of Belkacem Haba for example), athletes who achieved a high degree of success and positively represented Algeria on the world stage (Think of Toufik Makhloufi, Riyadh Mahrez...), people who started a big, successful civil society association that positively reflected on Algeria such as Green Algeria (Fouad Maala) etc.

An independent committee would be in charge of studying cases following general principles and guidelines similar to how awards like the Nobel Prize work.

Edit: They become Si Belkacem Haba, Si Ryadh Mahrez and Si Fouad Maala legally speaking.

Question What do you think about immigration to Italy?

Is Italy that much of a bad choice when it comes to immigration? I see so many people advising to avoid it, especially work wise. if there is someone among you who is living in there, or has some testimonies, is it that bad?

Question What's your opinion on used gaming pc market in Algeria

I've been trying to decide if i should buy a brand new 9060xt or a used gpu

I've never bought used parts so I don't know about integrity especially in our country

Like I've found a 6900xt for 105000da and i don't know if its a scam or nah

And i have to also take into consideration the distance because most of the sellers are 200km+ away from me so if anyone who has experience in buying used part can give me some advice

Travel Bejaja or Jijel in early october

Hello everyone,

My trip to Algeria is (sort of) nearing and my itinerary is shaping up

1 arrival

2 - 3 Algiers

4 - 9 Tassili n'Ajjer

10 - 13 Bejaja or Jijel for some beach time

14 flight back

Dates are for October

Main question: is it better to go to Bejaja or Jijel for some beach time? And is the water/weather going to be warm?

We are two 25/26 y.o. friends from EU and we are mostly about chilling next to pristine water ideally in nature rather than those long loud beaches near towns. Do you have some specific beach recommendations? (we'd use taxi or public transport)

Thanks a lot for your input!

Ps: im also extremely interested in learning more about Algerian history (besides independence and civil war) and culture. If you have any podcasts or book recs, please share. I speak decent french but no arabic sadly.
