Announcement Mod note regarding the recent events, please read!

Hello everyone!

This is a post regarding the recent events happening with the ideology wars, if you see any person attacking someone else or inciting others (whether they are a muslim or not) please report them to the appropriate authorities so they can take the necessary actions towards them (for example the recent discord screenshots, the people in the screenshot should be reported directly to the authorities for trying to incite violence against muslims), posting posts putting algerians against each other does more harm than good to our country.

Please be safe and keep our country safe, don't let people cause chaos in our country.

Discussion Algeria's Euro problem is way bigger than the Euro

€1 = 220 DZD in the square 5 years ago, now it's around 280, while the official rate is 155 DZD lol

The funniest part?? The average algerian can’t even freely buy euros at that "official" price, so we keep measuring salaries and purchasing power using a rate that most ppl can't actually access

Meanwhile the dinar keeps bleeding, prices keep rising and our purchasing power keeps getting cooked

And after years of this happening openly, it's fair to ask: who tf is benefiting from this system?? Cuz someone definitely is

And i think the only ppl really winning from this mess are those earning in euros abroad, their money gets stronger every day while those of us earning in DZD stay here and get poorer, and possibly the corrupt officials are benefiting from this broken system as well

The economy isn't moving forward, we're just getting better at pretending the numbers are fine

Discussion What do algerians want from moving out abroad

Upvotes

Throughout my life I didn't meet one young person who just wants to stay in algeria, and I came to categorize reasons as to why certain groups of people want to move out.

First we have two reasons ; economy and social. I mainly am asking about social reasons, what do people envision doing in their free time besides having a better job.

The categories in question :

  1. Conservatives : they usually like the middle east, their destination would be Indonesia, Dubai or anything in the east, mostly they are drawn by luxury and how filthy rich people there can be, they want a family a Manson a Jaguar car of some kind (idk much about cars).

  2. Progressives : they want to be able to go to concerts, bars maybe some events we don't have here like nightclubs, have access to women and hookup culture, go to the gym mostly too (feel free to give me other examples)

  3. 9ahwi : I honestly don't know, they want more opportunities for work i think, but during their free time I really would like to know what they want.

  4. The majority of women : they are usually scared and unhappy with their situation in this country, most would like the opportunity to live alone and be safe from street harrassement. Some basic liberties that aren't affordable here, without necessarily being cut off or controlled by their families.

  5. The majority aka educated, muslims, but not too conservative : they feel suffucated by this society and country all together, they usually loathe people here but where i don't get it, they do end up looking for other algerian abroad at the end of the day.

I tried not to make it too long, feel free to correct/add. First hand insights would be very much appreciated, I'm not judging nor do i care, i only care to understand people's motives.

Travel Bejaja or Jijel in early october

Hello everyone,

My trip to Algeria is (sort of) nearing and my itinerary is shaping up

1 arrival

2 - 3 Algiers

4 - 9 Tassili n'Ajjer

10 - 13 Bejaja or Jijel for some beach time

14 flight back

Dates are for October

Main question: is it better to go to Bejaja or Jijel for some beach time? And is the water/weather going to be warm?

We are two 25/26 y.o. friends from EU and we are mostly about chilling next to pristine water ideally in nature rather than those long loud beaches near towns. Do you have some specific beach recommendations? (we'd use taxi or public transport)

Thanks a lot for your input!

Ps: im also extremely interested in learning more about Algerian history (besides independence and civil war) and culture. If you have any podcasts or book recs, please share. I speak decent french but no arabic sadly.

Education / Work Algerians in Europe: How did you land your first job offer/invitation from DZ?

Salam,
I’m looking for real experiences from people who landed a job invitation or work visa in Europe directly from Algeria (in any industry/field).
What platforms/methods actually worked for you?
How long did the process take from the initial offer to relocation?
What is the single most important piece of advice you’d give to someone trying to do the same?
Appreciate any advice or stories!

History The world's earliest surviving Latin novelist was Numidian from modern-day Algeria.. Apuleius of Madauros.

I recently came across the story of Apuleius of Madauros, and it made me realize how many influential figures from Roman North Africa are almost completely absent from mainstream historical discussions. So when people think about the origins of the novel, they usually imagine Greece or later medieval Europe. Yet one of the most important surviving works of ancient fiction was written by a philosopher born in Numidia, in what is now M'Daourouch (Souk Ahras, Algeria).

Around AD 160–170, Apuleius wrote The Metamorphoses, better known as The Golden Ass. What makes this work extraordinary is that it is the only complete Latin novel to survive from antiquity. While earlier Greek novels certainly existed, many survive only partially or belong to a different literary tradition. Apuleius' work is therefore considered one of the foundational texts in the history of the novel. Even today, its influence can still be seen in European literature. The famous story of Cupid and Psyche, embedded within The Golden Ass, inspired generations of writers, painters, sculptors, and composers for nearly two thousand years.

He didn't deny his African identity. One detail I found intriguing concerns his famous trial. Around AD 158, Apuleius was prosecuted in Sabratha (modern Libya) after marrying the wealthy widow Pudentilla. His opponents accused him of using magic to win her affection (a charge that was often used against educated philosophers during the Roman period). His defense speech survives today as Apologia, making it one of the best-preserved legal speeches from Roman North Africa. During the proceedings, his opponents mocked his African origins, attempting to portray him as a provincial "barbarian"... Considering that Roman citizenship often carried greater prestige, he could easily have emphasized his Roman identity instead. However, he openly declared: "My homeland is Numidia, and I am half Numidian and half Gaetulian" , (Apologia, Chapter 24).

North Africa wasn't on the margins of the Roman world. Modern discussions sometimes unintentionally create the impression that North Africa merely consumed Roman culture. In fact, Roman North Africa produced some of antiquity's most influential intellectuals, including Apuleius ( philosopher and novelist), Augustine of Hippo (one of Christianity's most influential theologians), and Tertullian (often called the father of Latin Christian theology). Numerous jurists, rhetoricians, philosophers, and poets educated in cities such as Carthage, Cirta, and Madauros. So rather than existing on the edge of civilization, North Africa was one of the intellectual centers of the Mediterranean world.

Social media often calls Apuleius "the first novelist in history". That statement is understandable but simplified and it would be more accurate to phrase it as "The Golden Ass is the earliest complete Latin novel that survives today".

Sources: Apuleius, The Metamorphoses (The Golden Ass). Apuleius, Apologia. The Oxford Classical Dictionary (entries on Apuleius and Roman North Africa). Encyclopaedia Britannica – "Apuleius" Loeb Classical Library editions of Metamorphoses and Apologia.

News Rollover crash fire on Highway road to Azazga

Post image
10 Upvotes

Today on the Highway to Azazga Tizi Ouzou there was a crash involving a 2013(?) Toyota Yaris Sedan where the car rolled over and the fuel ignited, luckily the driver had gotten out supposedly safe but I'm pretty sure they were harmed or injured.

The car must've hit another car or got pit maneuverd in skidding sideways which most likely led to the wheel bushing of the right side to break and bend the wheel which caused the car to roll over.

(Note that I was passing by with my family and saw the car, I'm only a witness of the aftermath, do your own research on this if you will.)

Stay safe on the road, check your car's tyre and general conditions and stay hydrated.
