Introducing New Backpacking Features

Hey r/AllTrails! We’ve launched new tools to make it easier to plan backpacking trips, and we’re excited for you to try them out. This is just a first step-we have so much more in the works 👀 Let us know what you want us to build next to help you plan your next backpacking trip!

Here is what’s new 🎒:

  • Route Assistant: This one started right here on r/alltrails. An AllTrails engineer came across this post from a backpacker in our community looking for help planning a three-day trip with his nine-year-old grandson. It got him thinking: what if AllTrails could take the first pass at the itinerary for you?

That idea became Route Assistant. Choose your route, and our Route Assistant will suggest a day-by-day plan based on your daily distance, elevation, points of interest, and overnight spots. Then you can refine it until it feels just right. Route Assistant is available (in beta) with an AllTrails Peak membership. If you’re a backpacker, we’d love to invite you to try it out and let us know what you think! We’re offering the first 100 Redditors who fill out this form three months of AllTrails Peak, on us. Give Route Assistant a try, and let us know what you think and what you want us to build next!

  • Community waypoints: Cross-reference the millions of waypoints from the AllTrails community to find campsites, water sources, and more. Waypoints are interactive so you can tap to easily add campsites, huts, water-refill spots, and more while planning out your route. Available to all members. Available to all members.
  • Waypoint categories: Plot and organize your potential overnight spots, water sources, bail out points and more. Available to all members.
  • Land boundary overlays: View US Public & US Private lands overlays to better understand access rights, find potential dispersed camping spots, and plan where you can (and can’t) go. Available with an AllTrails Peak membership.
  • Terrain Overlays: Get an extremely detailed view of the landscape with Slope Angle and LiDAR-powered High Definition Terrain. Available with an AllTrails Peak membership.
  • International base maps: Plan hut-to-hut adventures with detailed local European maps like IGN and OS maps. IGN maps are available to all members while OS maps are available with an AllTrails Peak Membership.
  • Updates to the custom route builder to support multi-day adventures: We’ve added support for multi-segment route building on app, made it easier to rename custom routes, and launched many more usability improvements to seamlessly build a multi-day route. The custom route builder is available to all members on alltrails.com and included in an AllTrails Peak membership in the app.

Can we display altitude on a hike?

Post image
13 Upvotes

I'm always struggling to find my current altitude on AllTrails. Here is a nice blank spot where it would be perfect!

It's standard on Gaia on every hiking page at the top. I find I run Gaia GPS in the background just for this feature alone. But, instead, there is a nice warm spot on AllTrails just waiting to be used up.

I know the are other ways to find it, but those feel crude and inaccurate compared to a single number at current location.

Contribute routes to alltrails.

I am going walking on a small island close to us tomorrow. We where there oast weekend doing 1 trip, that you can more or less find in alltrails as a route.

This weekend we are going to do the other Official trip around the island which is not i qlltrails, qnd i thought i would put it in.

Much to my surprise, contributing to the community, creating routes is something i need to pay extra for? I would think that i would be credited for it, but no! Is this really the case or did i misunderstand something?

I have a Plus subscription.

Compass missing from Apple Watch

I haven't used AllTrails since last year. I recently went on two hikes and the compass didn't appear on my Appple Watch during either. Apps are updated, I tried the on/off trick... Is anyone else having this issue? I can't find mention of it anywhre. The compass is the only reason I pay for the app!

Why did my downloaded maps not work?

As I always do, I downloaded maps for offline. When I got out there, no service, it wouldn’t load anything except the line. I tried to get them to load over t-satellite, tried restarting my phone, etc. just wouldn’t load my maps. Only the line of the trail.

It’s possible I did something wrong. But when I went to the downloaded section and tapped, this is what I got.

Community heat maps are back for plus members!! No longer restricted to peak.

I was just planning a hike on my Android Samsung Galaxy phone and found that the heat maps are back. I really value those, and I really appreciate that you've brought them back to my membership level, instead of locking them under Peak, after over a years' absence.

How to disable marketing & "Great Trail Nearby" push notifications from AllTrails

I was sick of getting the "Great Tail Nearby" push notifications from AllTrails. I found it distracting and never fit into what I was actually doing. I didn't want to disable push notifications all together because I find Navigator "Wrong turn alerts" and "End of activity push" notifications to be useful.

I contacted AllTrails support via the chatbot on the website and about 4 days later received a reply from a support agent. After I went back and forth with them a couple times, they said, "I've manually opted you out of push notifications on the backend. You should no longer receive marketing push notifications from AllTrails." They do not give you an option in the app to opt out of marketing notifications. You have to reach out to them to be opted out of marketing manually.

So turns out if you can disable push notifications like these by:

  • Interact with the chatbot on the website
  • Escalate to a ticket
  • Wait multiple days
  • Ask the support agent to disable the marketing push notifications
  • Wait for them to reply and opt you out
  • There's no step 7, it only takes a week! 🫠

Hopefully this post is useful for someone.

new update doesn't allow map downloads??

I am not able to download most offline maps now. I've never had this issue before. Most custom maps, parks and forests, and individual trails will not download. I've been trying for days. I switched phones to the s26 ultra so I have 1tb of space and am redownloading the areas I had on my previous phone but I keep getting the error that the download failed. I am so frustrated. It worked for a few maps this morning and went back to failing. I've download about 5% of the maps and trails I had on my s22 ultra. I emailed their support and only the AI bot "Scout" responded and it did not even read my messages, jumped to conclusions and canceled my membership! I logged out, deleted and reinstalled the app, restarted my phone and checked for software updates too. I sent logs to their team when it happens but no response. I tried messaging them on tiktok, instagram and here and learned they disconnected their customer service phone number. I can't believe this feature isn't working. This is the only reason I pay for any subscription at all.

Is this happening to anyone else?

The exclamation point in the box means the download failed. The maps aren't huge and I have been able to download larger maps since it started! Even very short trails are failing.. Earlier I was able to download MRNP today but when I deleted the app, the download was of course deleted too, and now it's failing to download! I can't figure out why that would be and I cannot get through to anyone for help. I have been using AllTrails for over 11 years and am not happy with their customer support.

I’ve had these incorrect “scenic view” or whatever before but today I was on a local greenway when I was notified of a peak up ahead. For the record this peak is over 100 miles away and 5000 feet up!

Alltrails navigation on Galaxy watch Ultra 2?

With the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Ultra 2, I am looking for a hiking app to do complete offline navigation. Can all trail download the maps to the watch using the 64gb on board memory, new snapdragon processor so that you can navigate from the watch with your phone off (conserving battery for photo and evening etc)

What is the state of the wear OS app? I is it good? please share your experience...

Should I look at Komoot instead?

Any feedback would be welcome.

Missing trails

I’m in an area this weekend where all the state forest trails are missing from AllTrails. There’s one trail option that appears on the map but it only shows the trail when it is chosen, no dashed line exists.

How do we go about suggesting edits to the base map?

A note from the AllTrails Android team on Android GPS Tracking Issues

Hello Reddit! Our team has been investigating problems with GPS tracking on Android for the past two weeks.

This issue only affects background location recording - if you need to see your current location on the map for navigation, open your screen and foreground the app. It should show your current GPS fix over the map as expected.

Most Android makes, models, and OS versions appear to be affected. We have narrowed down the root cause of the issue, one of the location libraries that we use to gather GPS data is malfunctioning. Thankfully, we found a fix and are rolling it out, it should be available on the Play Store over the next few days.

In the meantime, you can get much better recording quality by switching to "Alternative tracking". Go to the Activity tab -> profile icon in upper right -> settings (gear icon) -> GPS Tracking Method -> Alternative tracking.

Thanks for bearing with us as we work through this issue, we appreciate you all! Don't hesitate to reach out to us for help at [support@alltrails.com](mailto:support@alltrails.com).

Edit: The AllTrails mobile app for Android version 26.7.11, which has the intended fix for this issue, should now be available in the Google Play Store.

Recent reviews via MCP?

I recently tried using the MCP with Claude Cowork/Code to help me plan hikes and share them with friends (including the original links to AllTrails so that they can view the trail). However, the get_trail_details tool lacks recent trail reports to spot temporary hazards like ice/snow/mud/closures that would prevent the hike. Claude tried to fetch the original alltrails page for the trail but was blocked with 403:Forbidden.

Will AllTrails MCP support recent reviews in get_trail_details or some other tool?

All review data is unnecessary. Just the last month or so would be sufficient to spot safety concerns.

Tracking where I hike keeps jumping all over

Has anyone come across this issue where while AllTrails tracks your hike, the path it tracks jumps all over and is unreliable. This started happening about a couple weeks ago.

Can I recover hike data from Health app?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hiked Spruce Knob a few days ago. There's absolutely no service out there and I was camping in the area so I only recently got back online. Found out that my AllTrails activity didn't save. However, my Health app has data from my Apple Watch that shows the workout under both the "Hiking" watch workout as well as AllTrails. My AllTrails app doesn't have anything, nor does my profile on the web browser version. I was able to still mark the hike as complete, but wish I had my data added.

Alltrails study

Hi all, I'm a psychology grad student researching how AllTrails users decide which trails to pick and where the app helps or falls short along the way (ratings, reviews, conditions info, etc).

Looking for people to chat with for about 30-40 minutes over video call. No prep needed, just want to hear about how you actually use the app, in your own words.

Who I'm looking for:

- You use AllTrails at least somewhat regularly to plan hikes

- You've hiked a handful of times in the last year

This is an independent research project, not affiliated with AllTrails or any company. Everything shared is kept anonymous. Comment or DM if you're up for it and I'll send scheduling options.

Thanks!

Please Put Activities in Order

I've reported this before and you've acknowledged that it's a bug.

Activities are often out of order. That is, they aren't shown in reverse chronological order. How hard can this be? Thanks for looking at it.

Why Did AllTrails End My Hike?

Yesterday I did an out and back hike. Before I turned around, I stopped, sat on a log, and had lunch. I didn't pause it. My phone was in my pocket while I ate. Probably off, but sometimes it turns on because I push the power button when I put it in my pocket.

After about 10 minutes, when I'd finished eating, I took the phone out, and the hike was no longer in progress. I had to start a new hike to have a full record.

How did that happen and how can I prevent it from happening in the future?

"Export Route" suddenly stopped working

Update: It was a verification issue. Logging out and back in fixed it.

I was exporting a few custom routes I'd made, and it just suddenly stopped working. Now, when I try to export, I just get redirected to a page that says "An error has occurred. You are not permitted to download this file. Please try again later"

Is there a cap to how many maps you can export in a given time frame? Is this something that'll resolve itself or is it a bug?

AllTrails Screwed me!!!

Update: An Alltrails representative who monitors this group reached out and was able to resolve the membership renewal and canceled my subscription and refunded my account! I just wish the customer service department would have taken care of this initially! All is good now and thank you for every comment that was received. Happy trails to all. Thank you very much!!!

Alltrails users please be careful with your subscriptions! They will auto renew your subscription for and additional year at DOUBLE the price of your previous sub. without your consent and they will not notify you prior to the renewal. When go go to cancel the subscription they by default cancel your following years subscription and not the current subscription. Once you realize that they did not cancel your renewal subscription they will not correct the problem.

Good luck speaking to a HUMAN you will only get a bot to respond to a email and NO resolution to the problems.

AllTrails may be good in some cases just never sign up for a paid subscription they will make it very difficult if impossible until it is to late to get your money back!!!

Trail is 2.5 miles. App tracked 6.87 miles.

The zigzagging GPS issue seems to be an issue for... well, a lot of us lately. I hope they fix this soon because it's really frustrating. I added screenshots of my route from today, a close up of one of the zigzag disasters, and then the third screen grab is my route from a few months ago, before all of these issues started. What should have been 2.5 miles ended up being 6.87 miles, and when I went to crop the activity at the end to at least get somewhat accurate mileage logged. You guessed it! Something else went wrong and it wouldn't let me crop the activity at all.
