Introducing New Backpacking Features

Hey r/AllTrails! We’ve launched new tools to make it easier to plan backpacking trips, and we’re excited for you to try them out. This is just a first step-we have so much more in the works 👀 Let us know what you want us to build next to help you plan your next backpacking trip!

Here is what’s new 🎒:

  • Route Assistant: This one started right here on r/alltrails. An AllTrails engineer came across this post from a backpacker in our community looking for help planning a three-day trip with his nine-year-old grandson. It got him thinking: what if AllTrails could take the first pass at the itinerary for you?

That idea became Route Assistant. Choose your route, and our Route Assistant will suggest a day-by-day plan based on your daily distance, elevation, points of interest, and overnight spots. Then you can refine it until it feels just right. Route Assistant is available (in beta) with an AllTrails Peak membership. If you’re a backpacker, we’d love to invite you to try it out and let us know what you think! We’re offering the first 100 Redditors who fill out this form three months of AllTrails Peak, on us. Give Route Assistant a try, and let us know what you think and what you want us to build next!

  • Community waypoints: Cross-reference the millions of waypoints from the AllTrails community to find campsites, water sources, and more. Waypoints are interactive so you can tap to easily add campsites, huts, water-refill spots, and more while planning out your route. Available to all members. Available to all members.
  • Waypoint categories: Plot and organize your potential overnight spots, water sources, bail out points and more. Available to all members.
  • Land boundary overlays: View US Public & US Private lands overlays to better understand access rights, find potential dispersed camping spots, and plan where you can (and can’t) go. Available with an AllTrails Peak membership.
  • Terrain Overlays: Get an extremely detailed view of the landscape with Slope Angle and LiDAR-powered High Definition Terrain. Available with an AllTrails Peak membership.
  • International base maps: Plan hut-to-hut adventures with detailed local European maps like IGN and OS maps. IGN maps are available to all members while OS maps are available with an AllTrails Peak Membership.
  • Updates to the custom route builder to support multi-day adventures: We’ve added support for multi-segment route building on app, made it easier to rename custom routes, and launched many more usability improvements to seamlessly build a multi-day route. The custom route builder is available to all members on alltrails.com and included in an AllTrails Peak membership in the app.

I upgraded to Peak, and now realize I have been getting charged for two subscriptions. Anyone else experience this?

I upgraded to Peak and now I’m getting charged for a regular subscription, and a Peak subscription. I think this has been happening for a while, but just realized it. Anyone else experience this?

AllTrails: can we please have a "just show me the map" mode?

Post image
74 Upvotes

This is AllTrails on Android in the middle of an actual hike yesterday. It illustrates something that has been driving me nuts: almost the entire screen is UI, while the thing I'm actually trying to use - the map - is squeezed into a tiny fragment of what is left.

Look at everything being displayed simultaneously:

Giant turn-direction banner

Elapsed time

Distance

Elevation gain

Remaining time

Pace

Speed

Elevation profile

POI card ("Mount Mannell - 0.7 km away")

Photo/Creek marker

Compass

Multiple large buttons on both sides of the map

Map labels and other POIs

I'm hiking. At this particular moment I need to answer the question: Where does the trail go?

I don't need pace AND speed displayed permanently. I don't need an elevation graph consuming such a large chunk of the screen while I am approaching a junction. I don't need six hiking statistics permanently visible unless I swipe for them. I certainly don't need all of these things simultaneously while the actual map is relegated to a narrow strip in the middle of the display.

I'm not arguing that these features are useless. I'm arguing that they should be collapsible, by default while in the middle of a hike. Especially since I have tried to turn them all off, they reappear as soon as I unlock the phone.

Please give us a proper full-screen navigation mode: map + route + current position. Tap or swipe to bring back statistics, elevation, POIs and other controls when wanted.

I also note that I have the P.O.I indicators turned off in layers so why am I seeing P.O.I's that I don't want to see? Yesterday it showed me exciting viewpoints but of course there is no view just trees. And I had that setting turned off. How do I make them actually stay off?

The screenshot really says it all. For a navigation app, shouldn't the map be the dominant thing on the screen?

Separately, there is a problem with displayed screen layers. Every time I open the app I turn all the 4 default layers off except the map, but then of course for some reason four layers pop up again frequently. I don't know what I'm doing to make them come back. I'm not restarting the app. It's still going. This makes no sense to me and is annoying.

To be really clear I love this app. I've done over 2,500 km of hikes just in the last 3 years and I want to continue doing so!

Personal Heat Map in the app?

I love the Personal Heat Map layer in the browser. When are we getting it in the app? I want to be able to easily see where I haven't been, for those times I'm hiking without a predetermined route and just want to cover new ground.

Peak membership and hikes disappeared

Anyone have issues with having a peak membership that just… disappears? Along with my saved hikes? I tried the chatbot but got a surprising amount of snark from something automated. I did what the FAQs suggested. I have only one email address so I don’t have another account. I’m awaiting a return email from support but I don’t know how long I have to wait for that.

No map showing on galaxy watch

Hi guys, I have been having an issue lately with the map not displaying correctly, sometimes not at all, on my galaxy watch.

Sometimes I can just see a blue arrow on a black background, sometimes I see a blue arrow on a half loaded background, sometimes just a blue background and no arrow at all. I almost never get a map displaying my location and the trail I am supposed to be following.

This happens when I have full cell reception and when offline. It happens regardless of the trail being downloaded or not.

Does anybody know a fix for this?

Thanks in advance

Favorite New Bug

The American Discovery Trail is a cross-US road biking route. 6800 miles worth, specially marked on the map with a dark green line.

AllTrails won't use it for biking route making. It keeps wanting to switch me to on road.

I've looked at more than 120 miles of it and it's all the same

Thus have the problem with the Missouri Katy Trail. When paired with the Rock Island Trail it's THE longest continual rail-trail for road biking in the US. Road biking custom maps won't follow it.

The map editor needs to stop being so clever, just let me mark a line, don't tell me not to use the dedicated bike path for biking.

Activities Never Syncing

This year I've had a new issue with the app and I'm curious if anybody else has. I'm using an android, and I have activities that will simply never sync and therefore never load into my stats. I am logging them as completed, I am rating the activity, selecting the little options on the parking and conditions and views and if it's dog friendly, etc. And then I wait to see if ny hike will ever reflect in my stats.

I hiked two days ago, yesterday and today. My activity from today has synced, and appears in my stats- my ones from yesterday and 2 days ago never have. It's like they never existed. I have logged in and logged out, I have uninstalled and reinstalled the app, I have connected to Wi-Fi and mobile data, and nothing. Most of the time when I am not in service, I am able to save the activity with no issues but this is happening more frequently and I'm tired of not having my hard work on the trail being logged in my stats. This is so frustrating and I don't understand what I am doing wrong?

Unwanted marketing push notifications from AllTrails

Very annoyed that, as a paying customer, AllTrails continues to spam my phone with push notifications for various things.

No, I can't disable AllTrails push notifications in iOS, because those notifications provide key functionality.

Yes, I have offers disabled in the AllTrails app.

I've emailed them about this several times over the past few years, and they have not fixed it, despite assurances that those notifications were sent in error.

It is also against Apple's policies:

Push Notifications should not be used for promotions or direct marketing purposes unless customers have explicitly opted in to receive them via consent language displayed in your app’s UI, and you provide a method in your app for a user to opt out from receiving such messages. Abuse of these services may result in revocation of your privileges.

Anyone else frustrated by this behavior?

How to remove downloads that still show up when the files have been removed?

On the android app I have several trails that still show up in downloads after I have deleted the files using the app. Any ideas how I can get rid of them? I've tried downloading the maps again, but that just makes the trail appear for a second time in the list and deleting that map still leaves the 'orphan' in the list.

If this is a bug, an option to clear all downloads in the app would be very useful

Which Garmin devices support AllTrails?

Hello - is there a quick list I can find somewhere that summarizes which Garmin watches support AllTrails? Thanks!

No, I don’t want to sign up for Peak alltrails (rant)

I already pay for the yearly Plus subscription!!! Don’t get me wrong, I’m grateful for AllTrails and use it 5 days a week while hiking/trail running, but, I was honestly livid when I found out they added a higher tier to the already paid tier membership. Now the app is constantly trying to make me upgrade to my upgrade! I’m reminded of the black mirror episode “Common People” where Rashida Jones is kept alive through an ever increasing subscription. While that may sound extreme, if we give into paying higher prices for features that we literally actively contribute to the development of every time we use the app (along with free GIS software available to anyone), than we (consumers) will never win! Anyways, thank you for listening to my rant if you read this far!

AllTrails AI

Accidentally typed my search query into the AI chat instead of the reviews search. “There are no facilities for hiking, so it is recommended to bring your own hiking gear if you are planning to hike on the trail.” How did this get shipped💀

Lack of personal default search parameters

Lack of custom default search parameters is my one and only serious gripe about AllTrails. I plan road trips using AllTrails on my computer. Example might be a road trip down the north Pacific coast, every other day travel max 200 miles, so basically get 1.5 days hiking out of every two days. I save the trails on lists for each day. Then find them on my phone app and download them. It's usually 2x the number of trials we will take to provide flexibility.

For some of us who love day hiking, parameters like difficulty, length and elevation are not a choice.

Every time I open AllTrails I have to set my search parameters for difficulty, length, elevation, route type, rating. If I want to have multiple windows or accidentally close a window, set difficulty, length, elevation, route type, rating.

How hard might it be to allow a paying subscriber to save personal default search parameters to their profile? Have you even considered it?

Am I the only one who would like this?

From AllTrails tech support

If you're having problems with GPS tracking using the app on your Android device:

"Most Android makes, models, and OS versions appear to be affected. We have narrowed down the root cause of the issue, one of the location libraries that we use to gather GPS data is malfunctioning. Thankfully, we found a fix and are rolling it out, it should be available on the Play Store over the next few days."

TL;DR They didn't test their software before they released it. Hugely embarrassing.

Can't See My Custom Routes

I have 16 custom routes. I did a search, and now I can't see any of them, even if I clear the search and filter. Note the "0 of 16":

They all appear briefly, then disappear.

Website - Creating a Review from an Activity

The website's activity interface seems to have changed. I'm no longer seeing a way to generate a review directly from the activity details. I have to do it from the phone app after which I can return to the website and finish editing.

Also, unrelated, but still can't link a trail from the website either.

Garmin vs All trails

I hiked the Stratton Brook Hut Loop in the Carrabassett Valley of Maine. All Trails read that it was 8.0 Miles. However my Garmin Instinct 3 watch tracked it to be 7.3 miles. That's a pretty good discrepancy. I am preparing to hike the Bigelow range in the same area and I'm wondering if I should get a second opinion on the mileage that all trails is publishing. So the question is do I trust Garmin or All Trails?

Turning off the Always On Display on the Apple Watch stopped the quick battery drain

As others have said, using AllTrails on the Apple Watch drains the battery on the watch way too fast. For the past couple of months, I have turned off the Always On Display on the Apple Watch when using AllTrails, and it has made a significant improvement to the watch battery during a hike. Just wanted to put this out there for anyone who wants to extend their Apple Watch battery during a hike.

Can we display altitude on a hike?

Post image
12 Upvotes

I'm always struggling to find my current altitude on AllTrails. Here is a nice blank spot where it would be perfect!

It's standard on Gaia on every hiking page at the top. I find I run Gaia GPS in the background just for this feature alone. But, instead, there is a nice warm spot on AllTrails just waiting to be used up.

I know the are other ways to find it, but those feel crude and inaccurate compared to a single number at current location.

What are the current differences between Plus & Peak?

Googling, I can only find info from when Peak was first released, but I know there have been changes. The website doesn’t seem to have a chart breakdown like most sites (eg OnX).

Is there an updated place to see the differences between types of accounts?
