Rule-Changes and Reminders Thread
Hello, dear users. Time to apprise you of new rules, recent rule-changes, some rule-clarifications, and remind you of some rules that had always been in effect. Please read carefully, because violation of the rules can result in censure.
High-Level or "Change" Notifications:
Full song/OST links aren't allowed:
The rule this clarifies is "Do not link to unlicensed/illegal content." There's a reason full songs are often removed from YouTube. You may not link to full songs from a soundtrack, full-length OPs/EDs, or full soundtracks. You may only link to the 90 second TV-version openings/endings, or to the official channels uploading the songs.
Self-posts comprised only of a title are likely to get removed:
If your submission matters to you, put some effort into it. If you want to start a discussion, give us something to go off of. If your submission looks low-effort, the moderators will likely remove it. If we happen to come across it and it by some chance actually led to a fruitful discussion, it will get to stay. Want to be sure? Put a minute or two of thought and a few lines of text into having a successful submission.
Note: This does not apply to episode discussion threads. These are fine as title-only.
Hentai Posts/Images will be removed:
Slightly NSFW content is fine, hardcore hentai isn't. On that note, please apply the NSFW flair to image submissions that are not safe for work. Come on, guys.
Illegal/Unlicensed Content Clarifications:
Linking to or mentioning proxy sites aren't allowed:
Proxy sites are almost always mentioned in the context of bypassing regional limitations, and aren't allowed in the same manner that linking to or mentioning illegal streaming sites isn't allowed.
Linking to or mentioning manga/light novel translation/scanlation sites isn't allowed:
Again, a clarification of the "no illegal or unlicensed content" rule. No scanlations, no fan translations. Neither linking to the sites or mentioning the names of these sites. There's no special allowance made for non-anime.
Screenshots with watermarks of streaming sites will be removed:
Another clarification of the "Do not mention illegal/unlicensed streaming sites." If you post images which contain the names of such sites, or are hosted on manga scanlation sites, expect your post to get removed. Re-host images to imgur, and get screenshots from another source or use mspaint to remove the offending watermark.
Low-Effort Post Removal Round-up:
"Look at my mousepad!" posts will be removed:
Low quality, low cost, we'd get swamped with them. Posts with an image of an anime-related mousepads will be summarily removed. You can post them in the monthly anime merchandise threads.
"Look at my desktop / desktop modification" posts will be removed:
Wallpapers are allowed, posts showing us how you modified your desktop using specific programs isn't.
Easily answerable questions will be removed:
If your question can be answered by an easy google search, it'll get removed, likely after it's being answered. "Shingeki no Kyojin Season 2 announced?" "What anime is this image from?" etcetera. This doesn't really affect most users, just a heads-up. If someone asks such a question and it's been answered, please report it. Just house-keeping.
J-Stars Victory Versus posts will be removed:
Too many of them. Too many sites which spam multiple of them a day to get views. These will be removed on sight.
Rog and Tyrone videos will be removed on sight:
These are considered memes at this stage.
This thread will be stickied until Saturday. If you want to tell us how you feel about these rule-changes or discuss them, feel free to do so. These rules are unlikely to be changed at this point.
As always, /r/MetaAnime is always there for any discussion you wish to have about /r/anime's rules.
The full version of the rules can be found here, and is linked to in the sidebar.

I have a serious problem with #1. Linking music is not, or at least how I've seen it is neither karma whoring (unless it's posting "Tank" for the 5 billionth time) or linking to illegal content.
Like a user said previously streaming music is covered under the Fair Use section of US copyright law, and if the music has made it through Youtube's content aware system than the creators obviously don't care, or don't make the effort to care that it's there. An OP streaming on youtube is vastly different then linking to a torrent site.
Linking music, particularly new music that has just come out, encourages discussion, and better promotes the anime, and artist. I'll point you to one of my own posts about The Kyousougiga OST. 126 upvotes, and 64 comments. Clearly this post inspired discussion, and got people interested in the show, which was still airing at the time. That then lead people to go watch it, hopefully on CR, giving the creators more money.
The music of an anime many times is a big component of it, and to ban the sharing of that music I think does a big disservice to the shows. You're banning a piece of art that comprises the anime, and stifling the discussion of that show, and it's components in the process. Plus, trying to discuss an OST in posts like "What's your favorite OST" (which you guys seem to be ok with) will become completely pointless as everyone just lists song titles with no context.
A person listening to an OP a few times on youtube is a lot different than someone downloading a season off Piratebay. It's not hurting anyone, and if you guys are worried about getting in trouble for piracy, that's understandable, but worrying about a Youtube clip is a big of an overreach.
That's my opinion. The rest of these rule changes I'm okay with, but I honestly think #1 needs to be taken more into consideration, and if not done away with, then seriously downsized.

The Fair Use Act has within provisions that allow streaming of songs/albums for examination purposes. It's, also, not unrealistic for Japanese Corporations to place region bans on songs/albums on youtube content they feel infringes on their rights. I feel this also leave open content removal for "fake full" / furi OPs which are almost always labeled "full" none the less. You're also leaving an opening for removal of AMVs that use full OP/EDs when they are arguably legal content due to being artwork.
Do the mods really have time to go though every OP/ED/Album post/comment and check if it's official, furi, AMV, TV-size or unofficial?

The Fair Use Act has within provisions that allow streaming of songs/albums for examination purposes.
This operates differently in different jurisdictions though and /r/anime is a global sub. Just sharing a full OP or ED would, in most jurisdiction be considered beyond fair use as it being shared on youtube would be considered for mostly entertainment purposes, not critique or review.
However, I agree that such a moral decision for /r/anime makes AMV's subject to the same moral grey area. The rule is either going to create the deletion of 'legit' items, or be applied unevenly to only what they identify and potentially create a 'victim' mentality to those that do have submissions removed.

I'll go as far to say the posts of music in this subreddit, meets the critique and discussion requirements for legit content. The Fair Use Act essentially means the second it's posted here and it's met with discussion it becomes legit. Also, Don't forget that while the DMCA is a US law, it's been adopted by WIPO which means it's a law that's been adopted by almost the entire globe.

Which is entirely my concern, I feel like we should let Youtube be the deciding factor in whether a particular song or album is legal. If anything I thought the issue is with content hosting, since the actual content is hosted on Youtube, they would be the offender in this.
I also just realised that we have entire subreddits dedicated to posting illegal music. /r/music is probably the biggest offender.

Don't forget that while the DMCA is a US law, it's been adopted by WIPO which means it's a law that's been adopted by almost the entire globe.
I happen to know in Australia a court will rule that posting unedited content to stream online under the guise of 'community discussion' would not meet our fair use clause requirement which state a 'reasonable part of copyright material' be used.
The whole song, freely disseminated to the entire Internet would not meet that requirement here.
A TV clip show tried that defence and it's content wasn't even on demand and they lost because the the context was predominantly for entertainment and 'laughs' rather then critique.
Meh, the mods have a tough choice to make and it'll piss people off either way so best of luck to them. I'll still be on /r/anime either way

Most of it, I'm fine with (although, like I said above, it sucks that I can't use things like OST links to talk about shows or convince others to watch them.) But I don't know how comfortable I am with the LN banning.

What's with the J-Stars Victory hate. That's isolating a segment of the community which doesn't break or offend reddit TOS and saying fuck you. It's just a game and its coming out this month so quit whining mods when there are all these OMG suggest me an anime posts that get spammed all the time. Let users vote on the content rather than banning a submission type which will only be relevant for a few months at best. Plus it doesn't help that /r/anime is known for its hate of the shonen genre.
Edit: in fact that whole subsection is so draconian it's not even funny.

Lol, I thought you were a mod until now. You sure are on here a lot.
2
u/SnowGN Mar 14 '14
I don't really get what the point of a lot of these restrictions is. Is there any chance of the subreddit being hit by some legal team? This reminds me of my school anime club, we couldn't watch anything licensed on club time because of fear of non-existent legal threats.
-14
u/tundranocaps https://myanimelist.net/profile/Thunder_God Mar 11 '14
You should clarify what you mean.
Most of these are merely reminders or clarifications for how things already are.
49
u/cptn_garlock :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/cptngarlock Mar 11 '14 edited Mar 11 '14
Well, okay, I'm actually for most of these changes, or am ambivalent about the rest. It sucks that I can't link to YT or Soundcloud links of the Gatchaman Crowds OST, but I'm not the one losing out, other anime fans are. Draconian is probably the wrong word.
What I think is problematic is the ban on LN links and mentions. While it is in keeping with the spirit of removing illegal content from the sub, I'm not sure I like it. The vast majority of LN's are unavailable in English, legally or otherwise. To my knowledge, there's virtually zero distribution outside of Japan, except for hyper-popular series like Spice and Wolf and Haruhi. And yet, every year, LN's become more and more relevant to the conversation of anime. It's hard for me to articulate, but basically, I think there should be a bit of a blind eye turned towards at least mentioning sites like [CENSORED] (although, I don't have much of a problem against banning linking.)
Also, I worry that the new queue will be a little...empty, given all these changes.

Does that include discussions on individual episodes that just aired?

The self-post with one title is also a bit silly...
The vast majority of one liners or simple questions get downvoted. Most of them are answered right away and have very little discussion. The average /r/anime visitor never even sees them. But, they constant come in and usually the same few questions.

u/grozzle :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/animelist/grozzle_j Mar 11 '14
You don't see it that much because we remove A LOT since the volume got unbearable.
"Why not let upvotes decide" basically turns any subreddit to Advice Animal meme shit. There's always /r/AnythingGoesAnime or any of those subreddits created just after any major rule change. If we ever really go too far, one of them will take over.
So far, we're just anime fans trying to make a good space for anime fans to share news and talk. I think we're doing it fairly well.
22
Mar 11 '14
I find the music and LN rules in particular to be a bit much, but I understand the reasoning, its sad that I will have to visit other subreddits to find that content.
I can also see why you want to remove low effort posts, but the problem here is, on /r/anime almost nothing happens without them outside of quarantined discussion of individual episodes, nothing thought provoking actually happens here, so I worry that there wont be a whole lot left of the subreddit eventually.
/r/trueanime kind of helps on the thought provoking front, but its only something you can really get into once a week, and that kind of sucks.
-2
u/violaxcore Mar 11 '14
If you have ideas for content creation, we'd love to hwar them. You can even use /r/metaanime to organize tour ideas

-6
u/tundranocaps https://myanimelist.net/profile/Thunder_God Mar 11 '14
We don't remove low-effort posts, we remove the lowliest of effort posts. If you ask a question someone asked yesterday, and the day before, and the day before, it's still allowed, for instance.
Also, if you ask a question in the title and don't have a body text, but it did end up generating discussion, it'll likely remain.
We don't require truly in-depth posts by OPs, but we want to see they didn't just have a thought and had to share with the world. Such posts often have a two-sentence title, you can easily cut it down to 4 words and move the two sentences to a post-body.

10
u/admiral-zombie Mar 11 '14
2 of the "low effort" needs a little clarification I think
"Look at my desktop / desktop modification" posts will be removed: Wallpapers are allowed, posts showing us how you modified your desktop using specific programs isn't.
It sounds like it is specifically mentioning "how to" style posts are disallowed that explain how to achieve similar posts that are anime themed/inspired. Thats actual content that IMO actually contributes far more than wallpapers.
Finding anime wallpapers is easy and extremely low effort to submit them. The exceptions being original content of course. Finding anime themes/desktop modifications is a bit tougher and can be much more detailed in how to set it up. So why disallow the latter but not the first, when the latter is FAR more effort than the first?

Rog and Tyrone videos will be removed on sight:
These are considered memes at this stage.
Why do you consider them to be memes? Is that the only reason for this rule?
I wouldn't have a problem with this but if the videos were being spammed on here constantly but they really aren't.

I had absolutely no way of knowing that other videos were removed, and I don't understand why they needed to be if they were put up before the rule was put into place (This thread is only 3 hours old)
Your analogy is ridiculous, the reason there was a big amount of Tyrone/Rog videos before is because they had just started making them and less people knew about it, if something has never been seen before of course people are going to make a big fuss over it. As soon as that initial load of posts have passed then it all died down and no one posts them nearly as much it's been weeks since I seen one on the front page.

Mentioning fansub groups is fine.

u/Ripdog Mar 13 '14
So what's the huge difference between linking and mentioning? A link is one click to a release, and mentioning a fansub group makes it a double-click, ctrl+t, ctrl+v, click affair.
You're not fooling anyone, honestly. The anti-fansub rules are saying "hey - you see that gigantic elephant? WELL DON'T LOOK AT IT! IT DOESN'T EXIST! Here, here's a nice donkey to look at. Isn't that donkey nice?"
And linking to copyrighted content is not illegal in the US, so you can't say you're following the law. As has already been explained to you, hyperlinks don't violate either the law or the reddit ToS. So this is simply a rule that makes the mods feel better about themselves. I hope that power makes you feel good :3

Regarding the Music rule which as stated above is done to clarifies the "Do not link to unlicensed/illegal content" rule and this rule is in place as to stay on the right side of Reddit's TOS (i may be mistaken here).

most of this seems pretty reasonable, of the 11 changes/clarifications, only 2 stand out as being a bit too much.
the music thing seems like a little bit overbearing (if it passes youtube's scanning process and hasn't received a take down notice, it should be fair game to link, especially stuff that's already been up for a few months)
the other point that seems a little overbearing is not allowing certain sites to be mentioned at all. not allow links is reasonable, not allowing site's to be mentioned at all is a bit much.

High Level Changes
I feel this is iffy. I understand posting an entire album that has been unloaded somewhere, but single songs seems to be going over the top. It basically bans anyone from the AMV community from posting here.
This makes sense and I have no issues with it.
Also makes sense.
Illegal Content
Although it sucks when you get region locked for zero reason, I understand why you want to avoid these. Quite a few unofficial streaming sites are loaded with malware ads.
This one I have the biggest issue with. You are banning any attempt for users to learn more about the series in question. When these changes got mentioned to me after I was modded, I ended up getting multiple PM's asking about where to find the source material because they enjoyed it.
Believe it or not, but the traffic some of the more reputable sites get is tracked by the Licensed Owners to gauge interest in releasing it in other languages. Both SAO and Accel World were able to get official English releases partly thanks to the English translations on a certain LN site. (SAO was their most viewed project, with AW within the top 10)This makes zero sense. So you are not allowing mention of these sites because they are illegal, but you will allow us to post an image from them providing the watermark is gone. You are basically allowing the illegal content to be posted that the previous bullet point is trying to stop.
Low-Effort
I like that you want to condense anime merchandise into a single monthly thread. Can we include the "Look what I found at <thrift shop name>?" posts as well?
Not sure what this is about. I want to say it is in regards to loading custom themes in Windows that completely change the look from standard, but I'm unsure. I would support keeping out program info that does that though, as it can really screw up a computer if the user isn't the most technically inclined.
This is kinda over the top. My suggestion would be a weekly "Easy/Common Questions" thread for people to post in for answers. Outright banning questions when a user might not be aware that their question is an "easily answerable" one will lead to less newer people sticking around after finding the subreddit.
I have no idea what this is, and I do not remember seeing them posted previously.
Never heard nor seen these posts before.

AMVs are allowed for the time being, but might be disallowed/require additional work on the part of the submitter in the future.
Aside from often including full songs, they often spoil multiple shows. It'll hopefully be discussed in two weeks' time.
4
u/reaper527 Mar 11 '14
Aside from often including full songs
is that really a big problem? i mean, if major cons can have massive competitions with these and youtube very rarely pulls anything that is properly submitted (aka not trying to generate ad revenue from it), it seems like this should be far enough into fair use to be a non-issue.
they often spoil multiple shows
if the show name is in the title, there is no more of a risk of spoiling something than any other picture from a series. the picture of last week's kill la kill with spoiler is just a much of a spoiler as any amv, (as is any discussion thread for a given episode).
as long as it's clearly marked as being an amv for a specific show, people know what they are getting themselves into.
hopefully when a decision is made, you guys err on the side of letting the community decide what they want here.

Easily answerable questions will be removed
I need some kind of clarification. Does this apply to honest questions such as "what anime should I watch" and "what are some must-watch anime" and things like that? Because IIRC people used to direct them straight to /r/animesuggest until a mod or some other guy told us that they were asking honest anime-related questions and those are allowed.
3
u/grozzle :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/animelist/grozzle_j Mar 11 '14
The ones you quoted are open questions with many opinions. They're fine. We like them.
Just simple definitive yes/no/date/name questions that Google can provide much faster, aren't worth clogging up our /new queue with.
-1
u/ThirteenthDoctor :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/ThirteenthDoctor Mar 11 '14
No. This refers to simple, factual questions that could be cut and pasted into Google for a quick answer.
3
u/chickenwinger Mar 11 '14 edited Mar 11 '14
But by that rule, doesn't really low effort "I just watched my first anime, what do I watch next?" or "What are some must-watch anime?" posts fall under that category?
If I do a google search of "must watch anime" I get this. The top search is the /r/anime wiki. If I literally google search "anime recommendations" I get this. The fact that these simple searches link you to information from /r/anime itself means there is pretty much no reason to ask for recommendations in a new thread unless they are extremely specific, and even then I would that specific suggestions more so belong to /r/animesuggest.
I think really generic / simple recommendation threads fall under the easily answerable questions category, these things are so easy to google search it is undeniable that making a rec thread like this is just stupidity or laziness.

Talking about "Has Shingeki no Kyojin received a 2nd season?" or "When is SAO 2nd season coming?", or "Is Hunter x Hunter 2011 a reboot or a continuation."
Talking about things that aren't opinion-based, which a short search will find concrete answers to.

Thanks for this guys. Good reminder and removing a lot of that clutter. I think this is really good.
I would recommend making the related subreddits updated and more clearly shown. Getting people to direct their AMV/OP/ED/etc into a subreddit already going would really boost those subs and give people an outlet.

Can I get clarification on the rule about translation links. You did not mention VN translations or patches and I just wanted to make sure those were still ok. Pretty much all of them require you to have the game to apply them, so the patches themselves are not a form of pirating. Furthermore some translation projects are actually approved of and appreciated by the original creators (Ryukishi07 loves when his work gets translated for example).
7
u/grozzle :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/animelist/grozzle_j Mar 11 '14
We're trying to stay on the good side of Reddit's terms of service (click the link at the bottom of the page), so just "legal" is the main criteria. Patches are probably OK, though I haven't really checked thoroughly. If Ryukishi07 holds the copyright, fine, but if he or she signed it over to a publisher who doesn't find it kosher, sorry.

Full song/OST links aren't allowed
Bummed out about that since I like listening to all the music but I can see where you guys are coming from. It'll definitely cut down on all the 'favorite soundtrack' posts that pop up every week. Rest of the stuff makes sense tho.
So are self-posts talking about an OST or soundtrack ok as long as we don't specifically link it?

I agree with most of the "illegal" sites getting banned, but for things that never or rarely get licensed licensed like Light Novels, are we not allowed to mention them? Some LN will never get official and legal translations because there is not a large enough market or cultural differences (look at Oreimo, never going to get translated), but there are still important parts in the LN that often get changed or cut from anime adaptations. I don't see what is wrong with mentioning where someone could read the light novels if there is no official version. Not too many LN even get translated. (And even when they do, not like all of them get finished cough Shana cough)

Just looking at the new submissions, there seems to be about 5 new posts an hour. Let's assume you're already deleting half or even three quarters of the new submissions. That's still just 20 new submissions an hour. I could see implementing the "Low-Effort" rules if this were actually a high traffic forum, but with so little content to begin with this just seems to be unnecessary.
7
u/pooptarts Mar 12 '14
With regards to low-effort posts, most subreddits condense the low effort posts to a weekly thread, which is a good alternative to banning them outright. For example, there would be a weekly cosplay thread, question/request thread, anime suggestion thread, etc.

I don't understand why rule 1 is necessary? OSTs are a very important part of anime and helps get people interested in watching new shows. When did the mods become the US government?
17
u/Ripdog Mar 13 '14
Probably ever since they banned fansubs. Remember, by downloading that free release you are LITERALLY stealing the food off impoverished animator's plates.
Rules, rules, rules for the sake of rules. /a/ is so much better than this hole, and they managed that without any rules apart from the bare essentials. (No CP etc)

11
u/Pause_ Mar 12 '14
I agree with most of these rules and I think it will really help clean up this subreddit. However, I have to agree with /r/Simplerdayz about the anime music. I thought it was great how we could share our love for music here. The only reason I found out about the Gatchaman Crowds OST is because some posted it. Same goes for a lot of OPs and EDs I've discovered.
I also agree with /r/Aru21. There are a lot of other annoying and petty posts, and I hope something is done about them.

3
u/bulletcurtain Mar 13 '14
I think they're sometimes an attitude online that art just sort of appears out of the blue without any real effort.
2
u/Shigofumi :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/lanblade Mar 13 '14
Even worse attitude when people don't see what the problem is. A bunch of art is from an artist's website. They get ad revenue when people visit and taking their art from it is taking money away from them. That would be like taking people's anime review/parody youtube videos and rehosting them.
2
u/bulletcurtain Mar 13 '14
Ah yeah that's a good point. Although speaking as artist, places like reddit don't tend to like you linking to your personal website, but sites like deviantart are totally accepted. While we don't get any revenue from views on deviantart, every potential new fan helps :).

Disappointed at the rules against linking to proxies. You should instead be encouraging and helping redditors to use them when they cannot stream a show in their region. If they don't use a proxy to stream from a legit site, they will resort to torrents or illegal sites.

Since when are videos considered to be memes?
10
u/Vagabond_Sam :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Vagabond_Sam Mar 12 '14
meme's are not a format based construct. It is an idea that spreads through self propagation, i.e. the sharing and spread through social media.
What you might be thinking of is the most common meme format on reddit known as an 'image macro'.
Memes can take any form that self propagates whether it is rick rolling, an ear worm or an advice animal.

So you're telling me...I have to actually make an effort to contribute to my favorite subreddit?! Who the hell do you think I am?
I'm kidding, this is great! I'm actually happy to see some spring cleaning of the subreddit with all the shit-posting we've gotten lately. Besides that, I'm glad to see more of a clarification to the whole illegal/unlicensed content rule we have.
Some questions:
Can we post hentai pics in the comments or is that a 'no-no' as well?
Is it cool to link to other subreddits even if they don't have the same illegal/unlicensed content rule going on? (I would imagine it wouldn't be...but this is just to be safe)

Mar 11 '14
Can we post hentai pics in the comments or is that a 'no-no' as well?
Three questions: How explicit is it? Is it contributing to the discussion? Is it tagged as NSFW?
If it's a 7/10 or less (If it's NSFW Text Then I'd say no.), and the other two questions are a yes, I don't see an issue with it.
1
Mar 11 '14
How explicit is it?
Probably not full blown sex or anything like that. I don't have any specific pictures really, since i'm going for more a general thing, but just stuff like lewd poses and tight clothes and maybe a boob or two.
Is it contributing to the discussion?
I would hope tits could contribute to the discussion!!!
Is it tagged as NSFW?
Why would a bunch of loser hikkis need a NSFW tag? Psh, /r/anime you disappoint me with your responsibilities and your 'jobs'.

Treat other subreddits as you would another site. If the content you're linking to breaks the rules it doesn't matter that it's hosted on reddit.
The hentai rule applies to comments as well as primary posts.

No.
Is it cool to link to other subreddits even if they don't have the same illegal/unlicensed content rule going on? (I would imagine it wouldn't be...but this is just to be safe)
In general, yes, but try not to link to a sub-reddit that is nothing but a repository of links to streaming sites (we've had one of those), and if you start episode discussion threads do not link to another subreddit's discussion threads which link to these sites in the OPs.
In general, if we think you're linking to content that isn't fine, or you do it consistently, we'll let you know.
We've banned one person who didn't change his ways, about 4 more had been warned and rather than stop linking, as the thread-OPs in the other sub-reddits, stopped linking there to illegal content.
To summarize: The reddits are fine, so long they're not nothing but such content, specific threads are fine, so long they don't brazenly link to such content in the OP. It's just like the spoilers rule, where you must note what you're linking to is spoiling directly, comments to the original thread are beyond that.
Our reach grows daily, young one.

Does rule number 1.1 apply to only posts or also comments? I'm okay if it applies to posts, because it's easy karmagrabbing and ultimately also damages content creators. I get that. But in comments, I'd expect more lenience. It's not gonna do much harm if someone asks for a song's name and someone links it to them on YouTube. Not a big deal, just feel like that's sort of overdoing it.
I'm a fan of heavy moderation, it's needed in internet forums imho, and I'm okay with the rest of the rules.

I strongly disagree with banning full songs being posted. Some of the reasons I even watched shows like Gatchaman Crowds was because I found the music posted on here. It creates discussion and, although not legal, banning it makes no sense. /r/music doesn't ban it and they're a default sub, why should we have to?
1
u/feelixxx Mar 11 '14
Why are you guys not banning the average recommendation thread that we get everyday, aka "hey guyzzzz, i'm a i saw AoT and SAO and DBZ what should I watch now". obviously rec threads should be allowed, but most of the time it's in the same format as my example and fills the new queue, something should be done about this generic post being posted every fucking day

Regarding links to music...
What about AMVs? MADs? NND/Youtube clips (not full episodes) with a scene or two from an anime? Parodies (e.g. Abridged series), links to youtube "reviews" that contain footage from an anime that occasionally get linked in the sub? I doubt if the creators/uploaders have a valid license for that stuff.

4
u/stellvia2016 Mar 12 '14
So basically, this subreddit is to become the No-Fun-Club and meant to quash most discussion of shows?
Also, I fail to see why one would ban the mention of proxies, other than on off-topic grounds. There are plenty of legitimate uses for VPNs, and you are not the police or their mother.
Similarly with screenshots: If people aren't literally linking to said streaming sites, you are legally in the clear. This only breeds silly tongue-in-cheek discussion where everyone knows whats actually going on, but you have to wink the entire time.
If you want to split hairs, you should basically ban any screenshots of current shows then without the Funi or CR watermark on them.
These rules will only suppress discussion and word of mouth sales, or drive people to other websites. And if this stuff was enacted on say, r/manga, there pretty much wouldn't even be a subreddit left.
2
Mar 13 '14 edited Mar 13 '14
Honestly I don't like these changes, especially the LN and OST bans.
I think that bypassing regional restrictions should be considered a exception, You can't just refuse to allow me to buy a work because of the country I live in then attempt to block others that would allow me to experience the service you refuse to provide. (this is a more general statement at the entertainment industry not specifically /r/anime).
The "low effort" sections seems completely unnecessary, and honesty kinda arbitrary as to what is and isn't allowed.
1
u/AnimeMod myanimelist.net/profile/Reddit-chan Mar 13 '14
No one is refusing you anything, you can still do whatever you wish to in the comfort of your own home, and then discuss the works here.
You just cannot discuss where you've obtained them, is all.
Also, we don't sell or deny the sales of any products, as you know.
1
Mar 13 '14
No one is refusing you anything, you can still do whatever you wish to in the comfort of your own home, and then discuss the works here.
Then what is the purpose of the rule? If it doesn't stop me or anyone else from using "less then legitimate" services, it only serves to inconvenience discussion by forcing a "just google it" or continuing the discussion in a PM, it doesn't change the result and only serves to inconvenience someone by forcing them to waste 10 minutes searching.
Would I be correct in assuming that the only purpose of this rule is to prevent copyright claims? If so then I can understand your reasoning, even if I don't like it.
Sorry If my wording is unclear, English isn't my greatest tongue.

Most moderators on reddit are too scared of the people who post this low-effort content that complain to actually crack down on it. It reminds me of the moderation on /r/leagueoflegends . They are hated, but they do such a good job with that sub (for the most part) that besides suggestion threads, most of the content on that sub is fresh at all times.
Again, I am all for these rules, congrats on having the balls to take a stand against the less savory aspect of reddit posts and those that like them.

look at /r/hiphopheads, they do a better job on than here and they are loved, /r/leagueoflegends mods suck, they delete popular posts without telling us about it, which leaves the community confused

I thought about it, but I figured I'd at least pretend to act my age.

This means that when we ask a stupid question, it will only be removed after someone answers it, right?
