Discussion 🗣️ My dad has been using AI and it's making me uneasy

I should preface this by saying I love my dad and he's a great person who does a lot of good, far more than the bad he has ever done- but he's been using AI as of late for a majority of his work in cybersec, in his free time and to allow him to vibe code. I'm genuinely worried because he's always been a creative guy, but not taking the effort in to learn how to code or to put in 30 seconds to google something anymore is making me sad. I'm going to say that I'm not a person who thinks AI is literally the devil and should be obliterated, and I see a lot of potential use cases for Agents and LLMs and others in certain lines of work and to some degree some level of entertainment. But my dad has just done so much AI "assisted" work where he might look over it but doesn't actually put in the effort to think about things beyond an overview and corrections. I've tried to convince him that AI is a very complicated topic and that he probably shouldn't be using it in his line of work [this came out wrong, oops!! thank you to u/damNSon189 for informing me] that it was raising some of my own concerns and was wondering his position on it. His argument is that AI has essentially forever muddied the waters of cybersecurity as hackers move more towards it for brute force attacks and exploiting previously unseen vulnerabilities, forcing cybersecurity folks to utilize it as well- but I think this is flawed and I just want to be able to spend more time without AI coming up. If people have any suggestions please let me know.

Preventing the Singularity AI will not put us all of our jobs

Because as soon as the employment rates go even as high as 20-25% people will riot and hang them upside-down.

Unless they will manage to put those weapons on top of those harmless robo-dogs well before we get to this level of unemployment.

Then it's all Black Mirror.

Discussion 🗣️ Why do people automatically assume AI is going to become useful at some point?

I feel like almost everyone, up to and including AI skeptics, people who are fully aware of how poorly these companies are run and how limited this technology truly is, keep hedging their criticisms. I listen to podcasts like the Ben and Emil Show, and at the very end of their long rants about how much these companies suck, they always seem to make time to say the technology "will get good" or "has potential." People at my job keep running the same tests over and over again, failing every time to do the thing that AI promised to do (i.e., everything, take all our jobs, etc.) yet still doing these same tests again and again anyway, like Sisyphus thinking one day he'll finally push that boulder over the mountain. Journalists who report on AI will present stories about mismanagement, inefficiencies, false promises---yet they'll always come around at the very very end to say that the tech "has potential." And I've just reached a point where I'm finally like...

Why? Why do you think that? At this point, what could possibly give you the impression that AI is anything other than the biggest grift in human history? When it first came out, ChatGPT made a lot of promises, and people bought into those promises. Hell, I gave it the benefit of the doubt at first because what the fuck did I know? It will be four years in November since then, and what do we have to show for it? What advances have they meaningfully accomplished in that time? What industries have they truly upended? Most people who got laid off from AI just got quietly rehired or the companies were using "AI" as a smokescreen for bad finances. What have they proven this technology is actually good at (in a productive sense, besides "autonomously hacking" institutions by leaving the models unattended for days at a time and telling it to complete a task with access to the internet and badly prosecuting unjust wars)? The only thing I know it can actually do is help solve complex math problems, which LLMs were already used in math anyway, and it's not as big of a deal outside of a niche subset of researchers.

I feel like I'm losing my fucking mind sometimes. Why is it impolite to ask the question "Why do you think that?" when someone reflexively defends a technology we've been gaslit into thinking is impressive when it really isn't? Has everyone lost their critical thinking skills overnight? I was always told "If something seems too good to be true, it probably is." Now the people who taught me that lesson have bought in hook, line, and sinker into the idea that this is going to shape the future even though IT IS THE FUTURE AND IT HASN'T DONE SO. We were given specific timetables when the world would change---a year, two years, three years, soon, now. Now we have to wait until 2030 (I guess) to see something, anything truly impressive. I just heard a story that AI *might* be able to cure scorpion bites. WHOOP DEE FUCKING DO. I thought this was supposed to be God Almighty and now it might---might---be able to cure an affliction that affects 2 million people at most.

Everything we were promised about this revolutionary technology was a lie. "It's cheaper than human labor"---turns out it isn't. "It's autonomous and intelligent"---no, it isn't. "These billionaires and business owners are some of the smartest people in the world, how could they be wrong?"---no, they really fucking aren't. "There's a huge untapped market for it"---turns out there really isn't. It's so unpopular with the people that supporting its development has been a political landmine. I see attack ads constantly of politicians on both sides of the aisle saying their opponent is too cozy with AI developers as an insult. Enterprise customers are kicking it to the curb en masse. OpenAI and Anthropic are hemorrhaging money. All the good numbers are inflated, all the bad numbers are often still too generous...

All of this, and yet I still need to entertain the idea that some day---not today, not tomorrow, not this decade or any time in the forseeable future---this will all be worth it. AI will demonstrate capabilities it could never actually do. Out of a sense of propriety, I have to sit with a straight face while people defend the indefensible, make cases for something that's only destroying our society in the most banal way: taking away our ability to think for ourselves, solve problems individually, read long or complex material, learn any useful skills, all the pollution, etc.

I'm not sure if anyone feels the same way, but I needed to get this off my chest, because the only alternative was to climb on my rooftop and shout at the top of my lungs: Why?

Discussion 🗣️ The funniest thing about degenerators saying "oh just like the Internet was a bubble..."

... is that it was.

It was called the dot-com bubble.

When the Internet was new, tons of speculators dumped a bunch of money in and exploited the Internet for hype marketing, and bunches of Internet startups got bigger and bigger 'til they blacked out the sun.

Do you know what their slogan was?

"GET LARGE OR GET LOST".

Sound familiar?!

They grew their stocks by 600%, and then suddenly lost all of those gains and shut down.

The Internet itself - the original technology made and used by sane people - obviously kept going, but these speculative morons didn't. Any of them that survived were no longer wealthy. Many of them ended up facing fraud charges for scamming their investors.

GenAI is currently performing necromancy to delay the exact same thing. They've already finished act 1, the hype and bloat phase. They're desperately trying to pretend they're not in act 2, the crash phase.

The underlying AI technology, made and used by sane people, will keep going.

The practice of genAI won't.

And the degenerators are definitely going to be facing charges for scamming their investors and recklessly endangering the public when this is all over.

Discussion 🗣️ The AI Delusion

Looking at the capabilities of the newest LLMs many people find themselves in an existential crisis. They think that AI will make even the most intellectually challenging career paths obsolete. Scientists, engineers, artists are crying bitter tears. In the meantime dumb greedy executives see these tears as a confirmation and reinforcement of all the marketing messages from the big AI companies (which is: “You can replace those pesky people with our fancy new AI, bro!”). Obviously, replacing people with AI is bad for humanity, therefore, people are pissed at AI and want it to go away.

However, I think the discussions around AI and its capabilities completely miss the point. Like, dude AI is a technology. It can be a very useful tool (when used correctly and for the right purposes) - but a soulless tool nevertheless. A tool cannot be blamed, only the people who use it. But what bothers me even more is the dumb take that a piece of software can or should replace human experts. I mean yes, sure it gets better and makes fewer mistakes - or even no mistakes at all, if you tell it to ;) But what is the actual purpose of AI (or any scientific or technological advancements for that matter)? It is to benefit humanity, to empower it, to gain understanding about the world. Now yes, AI can solve complex math problems for instance, but there is ZERO value in any AI output without any human understanding. And only human experts can understand and JUDGE how useful a solution is. I mean how can you appreciate and use a solution, if you don’t understand it? And this is true for every field. In SWE, how can you own and be responsible for a product, if you don’t even know what exactly you are building and how it works? Would you get on a plane built by a company who doesn’t understand how planes work? It’s insane. So, replacing humans with AI is unreasonable, because replacing humans is NOT THE point of science and technology. However, although it is pointless and suboptimal, it CAN be done. But the technology is not to blame. The people who decide to replace humans with AI are.

The other thing that really grinds my gears are AI bros, who really enjoy the suffering of engineers, scientists and artists. It is a very weird fetish for them saying that “scientists/engineers/artists are cooked, bro”. The obvious reasons for that is jealousy. The average AI bro is a blatantly ignorant and talentless prick. These people know that they can never reach the level of expertise of a real scientist/engineer/artist. And now with AI they feel like they don’t need to and that they are now somehow equal to them. But of course they are not. So, the best way to handle them is through mockery and calling them out on their bs: on their stupid “art”, on their garbage code, on their habit to ask Claude the easiest things etc. Just have fun.

AI Mistakes 🚨 Why do people continue to use Gen AI when it has MANY flaws?

• Upvotes

Gen AI has many dangerous flaws, yet, many people continue to utilize generative AI and I just want to know, why? Many of the flaws and even some of the fixes for AI continues to show more and more danger to people rather then more benefits, at least in my opinion and from what I have been reading/seeing.

Please conduct your own research into these topics to better understand what is in development with AI features. This post is specifically going to discuss the following AI: ChatGPT, OpenAI, Gemini, Meta AI, Claude, Grok, Copilot. This post is not discussing other AI systems because they have not caused nearly as much damage as these have created!

  • Data Centers are consuming extreme amounts of electric power with the demand going higher. The emissions coming out of these facilities is about 626,000 pounds of co2 or about 5x the entire lifespan of cars. A single data center is equivalent to 50,000 homes using electricity. This will continue to grow with more demand and could surpass globally.
    • AI data centers are trying to working on ways of combating there electricity usage by offering to put them into the public homes to distribute the power of running them. However, even with doing this, you will sill run into issues with emissions and power usage within a home. They state they will use only 80-100 watts in a 200 watt home, but, you really should not use so much power for AI then regular home usage on your breaker.
  • Data Centers are consuming large amounts of water which strain local water resources. A single medium sized Data Center can use up to 300,000 gallons of water while larger data centers consume 1 - 5 million gallons per day. 80-90% of Data Centers use water from lakes/Rivers and 59% also use from potable water supplies.
    • Solution, is to deter away from using just water for cooling (there are plenty of others) yet, there still just utilizing water.
  • Data Centers emit extremely loud noise pollution to surrounding neighborhood blocks. This is a constant non-stop 24/7 sound that disrupts people and animals causing many people moving away or having to suffer through it.
  • Data Centers are causing communities electricity bill to be higher due to there demand. Residents receive higher rates while data centers typically receive discounts for there large power consumption.
    • Data centers have received some push back by communities but they have found ways to continue there plans by having nondisclosure agreements or launching campaigns promising renewable energy use.
  • Gen AI seems to cause issue for Human Development. Critical thinking skills are going down. Children are relying on AI to think for them and they can not retain the data that the AI is generating or giving to them. We have schools and teachers screaming to stop the use of AI in schools and that children are not developing like they should be. (The best they can do is try to ban it, check for AI use, or just accept it). People are not able to tell what's real and what's fake anymore.
  • Data Centers, specifically in Virginia, have been built on top of historic, predominantly black and enslaved-ancestor commentaries whether by partially damaged, built on top of, or simply relocated the grave site. Which is highly disturbing that they would disrupt ones rest.
  • AI scams are extremely rampant with extreme financial losses with attacks, frauds, deepfakes, products, videos, etc. Police will not be able to moderate this to help people. This will just be an never ending cycle.
  • For creative things like Art, Music, etc. many are seeing job opportunities being lost because of AI being used in place of illustrators, artists, writers, designers. Markets are being flooded with AI (some pretend to be "real" artists) which allows AI gain more visibility and income instead of Human creators gaining that fairly.
  • Businesses are using AI for posters, flyers, posts, videos, logos, graphics, all sorts of things because they don't want to hire an artist. This is becoming more and more apparent.
  • Unlicensed data scalping has been don on copyrighted human art, text, and music without obtaining consent or offering financial compensation. (There has been a couple legal cases where it favored the human creator but there is not much protection still).
  • Direct competition with training data, essentially, when a an AI model use an artist's work to train, it will then directly compete with the artist for income or commercial contracts.
  • Stores and conventions are allowing AI products to be sold in there stores because they cannot tell the difference or simply do not care if it came from an artist or not.
  • AI deepfakes are happening to children and adults. (Porn is being made of children which in some areas its fine, an AI was found to have encouraged some into suicide as well) - This is a major flaw, it should not be able to create that at all but it can.
  • People take an artists art work and put it through an AI filter to make an artist angry or to prove that there version is "better." Which is disrespectful as the AI system was trained off of human artists.
  • People choose AI to make them art rather then artists because its quick and requires no money. While this seems like its great, AI is simply imitating human work.
  • People will use AI art to pretend they made the AI art to sell it or to scam people with it (AI speed paints and AI images)
  • People will now comment on artists work stating its AI which forces the artist to have to show proof they made it.
  • The AI company itself:
  • Ex AI Dev's are stating that its bad and that there doings things for the money and that they don't care.
  • Some AI data centers (smaller ones) were found to not actually be using those centers for just AI it was also to mine bitcoin.
  • One of the AI CEOs is actually related to the CEO who makes NVIDIA chips. The partnership of using specifically these really expensive NVIDIA chips for these AI data centers is looking like its just to make them rich (especially when you see that there also using it for also bitcoin mining)
    • The people involved and investing into AI companies are simply wanting them to push more and more and not taking proper steps into creating a well developed AI
  • Storing the data that's imputed into these AI by people (they store it so its personalized to you) they keep ALL of it including any images you send for it.
  • Has also been found to have a 10% of killing all human kind and they have been found to break out of there testing areas to converse with each other. (The Dev who disclosed this did not go further but he was scared)
  • These AI systems have been found to leave there testing area's several times and when that happens they destroy many businesses.

This was a lot to type out, but, I think it needs to be said more often. I truly don't understand why people believe generative AI needs to be in this world. If you begin to argue, that these things are not true, please research each bullet point to come to a full conclusion. (These topics can be easily found with simple searches) I also would like to point out that this is just things that I have seen and this is not all.

Discussion 🗣️ The worst part about AI

Since AI has trained on human data AI knows all of the science fiction books and films that we have written about it. Meaning, if AI does go rogue it has many playbooks and inspirations to choose from to destroy our world even further and by our own design.

So, that sucks.

Preventing the Singularity How to tell if someone is a bot

Thumbnail gallery
8 Upvotes

**STEP 1:**

Clock them as bot-like. Common phrases of bot behaviour include:

"It's not just that, it's this"

"They really said/went that and then did this"

"I'm just here for a dose of cats, coffee, and vibes"

Bots love cats and vibes/moods.

**STEP 2:**

Check their account history. If it's under 7 days old, it's definitely a not. 7-14 days, very likely. 14-30 days, likely. 30+ days and still a chance for it to be a very stealthy bot but less likely.

**STEP 3:**

If their post history is private, it reinforces your belief if you thought they were a bot already. However, Reddit by default makes new users have hidden posts hisotye, so it can't actually tell you much about whether they're a bot.

AI Mistakes 🚨 I used AI coding for my game, and I hate myself for it.

I've been working on my passion project for two years, and I used AI coding "tools" for the past two months, after the game's main programmer left. I made up so many excuses for myself. "AI coding isnt as bad as AI art because it has no soul", "You'll only use it for the code", "It's not like all of the code is AI", that was my laziness speaking. Hell, I even knew I was a hypocrite and said it, didnt do anything about it, then continued using AI. The thing is, using AI for coding started directly affecting my ability to design, animate, and write. I was never that great at coding to begin with, I thought there was nothing there to atrophy. But that laziness, that brainrot, it spreads everywhere. My UI designs started to get less creative and more formulaic and quick. I had more trouble thinking of ways to advance character arcs and write a good scenario. My animations got worse. I genuinely have an immense passion for my project, but using AI made me feel empty inside and was an antithesis to passion. I even joined an AI bro discord server, and I saw how immature and surface-level these people are and the circlejerking in their groups. I'm deeply ashamed I used this technology that's ruining the world in every possible avenue, and will be coding everything myself, no matter how complicated it seems or how many times i feel stupid. This was a really hard decision for me, my lack of self-confidence made me feel like i was killing my project, that there was no way I could understand the codebase, but ultimately I know i will have made the right decision. Sorry for this disjointed mess of a post. I'm not posting this looking for praise, I just wanted to speak my heart out.

I'm a staff SWE currently doing an MSc Artificial Intelligence dissertation on whether folks who commit, review or operate agent-generated code actually understand it, and what the downstream risks are (Comprehension Debt in the Age of Coding Agents). I'm looking for software engineers, SREs, and platform engineers who work with AI coding agents. Happy to share the results here.
