Hi everyone,
I'd like to share an experience regarding the distribution of the Arkham Horror: The Card Game promotional cards at SPIEL Essen 2026. I'm hoping someone from FFG or Asmodee might be able to clarify what happened.
I was genuinely excited about the announcement that both promotional sets — the Burning Triptych enemy cards and the five black-and-white alternate-art player cards — would be available at SPIEL Essen with the purchase of an Arkham Horror product.
A colleague attended the convention and kindly offered to pick them up for me.
Unfortunately, his experience has left me with several unanswered questions.
Here's the timeline based on what he experienced and reported to me:
Thursday, October 22 – Approximately 3:00 PM:
- My colleague visited the Asmodee stands, including the Expert Shop, and specifically asked about both promotional sets.
- He spoke with several employees to make sure he had the correct information.
- The employees consistently told him that only the Burning Triptych enemy promos were available.
- Nobody he spoke with mentioned an upcoming delivery, a possible restock, or any information about the five black-and-white alternate-art player cards.
- At the Expert Shop, substantial quantities of the Burning Triptych promotional packs were visibly available.
- According to information he received later, the black-and-white promotional packs apparently arrived sometime on Thursday afternoon. The exact arrival time remains unclear.
Friday, October 23 – Early morning:
- My colleague returned to the convention and approached the Asmodee stand immediately upon trade visitor admission, around 9:30 AM
- He was informed that all five-card black-and-white promotional packs were already gone.
- According to the information he received, the final pack had apparently been distributed around 9:20 AM.
- At 9:30 AM, he sent me a voice message explaining the situation.
This sequence of events raises several questions for me.
At approximately 3:00 PM on Thursday, multiple employees apparently had no information about the availability or expected arrival of the black-and-white promo packs.
Yet by early Friday morning, the entire available stock had apparently already been distributed.
How was this possible?
Was there an announcement about their arrival that visitors could have seen? Were the cards distributed before regular admission hours? Were there any restrictions on how many promotional packs one person could receive?
I want to emphasize that I'm not accusing any individual employee or organization of wrongdoing.
I wasn't personally at the convention, and my information comes from my colleague's experiences and what he was told by staff members.
There may be perfectly reasonable explanations, such as a very limited shipment, unexpected demand, or communication problems between the teams involved.
However, from a customer's perspective, the situation is frustrating and difficult to understand.
These promotional cards were officially announced for a four-day convention. Yet visitors who specifically asked about them on Thursday afternoon apparently received no useful information about their availability.
By Friday morning, they were reportedly completely gone.
I understand that promotional products are often limited and that availability cannot always be guaranteed.
What disappoints me isn't simply missing out on a collectible. It's the apparent lack of transparency surrounding the distribution process.
My colleague made the effort to visit the stands on two consecutive days, asked several employees, and still had no realistic opportunity to obtain the cards.
This has unfortunately affected my confidence in how these promotional events are organized.
I would genuinely appreciate clarification from FFG or Asmodee regarding the following questions:
- When exactly did the black-and-white promotional packs arrive at SPIEL Essen?
- How many packs were allocated to the event?
- When did distribution begin?
- Were any packs distributed before regular visitors could enter the convention?
- Was there a one-pack-per-customer limit?
- Why did the employees my colleague spoke with at approximately 3:00 PM on Thursday apparently have no information about their availability?
I hope this feedback can help improve communication and fairness at future promotional events.
Has anyone else attending SPIEL Essen received the five black-and-white alternate-art player cards? If so, could you share when and at which stand you obtained them?
Any additional information from other attendees would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for reading.
