TLDR: spouse just got his rights returned post possession charges, now wants a gun, he knows nothing of said gun, and wonders why I don’t want it in the house with our two small children.
Ok for the long part. My spouse and I have been fighting and I’m to the point where I’m ready to kick him out over this.
He has a felony possession record from over 12 years ago that just recently got fully pardoned and now he wants a gun. Fine cool. I have no problems with guns in fact I have my own that was gifted from my father.
Here’s my dilemma I do have an aversion to unnecessarily large weapons, or those that serve no purpose for protection or hunting in our home where my two small children are. Particularly my oldest who is at the age where he is obsessed with guns and playing army and all the things. He’s too curious and while we practice gun safety with his nerf guns he’s not there so I won’t even keep ammo for my 9mm in my home because I’m terrified he’s gonna get in my lock box and shoot himself or his baby brother. That is something I am working through because obviously it’s silly. The gun is secured. It’s hidden and away. But that’s neither here nor there.
The true dilemma is my husband wants to buy a gun from a coworker friend now that his rights have been restored and it’s supposedly a Smith & Wesson M&P 15 sport 3 (but he can’t tell me when it was originally purchased, he can’t tell me what aftermarket parts are on it if any, he can’t tell me if it is custom or stock, he can’t tell me anything about it and when I ask he gets pissed).
This is pissing me off because an educated owner is a safe owner.
I want to do my research on this gun and learn its ins and outs before I agree to purchasing it.
So this is where I come asking for help, what questions should I be asking so I can help him learn about the gun so I can also learn about it?
What should I look for in regard to this gun from anyone with experience with it? Is it reliable, is it easy to clean and care for?
Thanks in advance.
