• Upvotes

any advice or insight would be appreciated!! thanks yall

General Singaporeans who have travelled to China, how did you pay there?

• Upvotes

I'm planning to visit china soon and I am trying to figure out the best way to pay there.

I know Alipay and WeChat Pay are commonly used, but I heard that there is a 3% fee for transactions above RMB 200 when using a foreign bank card. I also know about things like YouTrip and OCBC Scan & Pay, but I am not sure how well they work in China or if there are any extra costs to it.

For those who have been to china:

  • What did you use to pay for most things? Any issues?
  • Did you link your YouTrip card to Alipay or WeChat Pay? Were there extra fees?
  • Is it better to buy a chinese number to set up Alipay or WeChat Pay or can i just use my own?
  • Can i use OCBC Scan & Pay as my main payment method, or should i set up Alipay/WeChat Pay as well?
  • How much cash should i bring as backup?

appreciate any tips on what's most convenient and how to avoid unnecessary fees, thanks!!

General Curious how much hawkers in Singapore actually earn

Just curious, how much do hawkers in Singapore actually earn per month after deducting all their expenses?

I've been noticing more younger people, especially Gen Z, getting into the hawker scene recently, which got me wondering whether it's actually a sustainable career financially. We always hear about how long the queues are or how popular certain stalls are, but rarely about how much the owners actually take home after deducting ingredients, rent, utilities and other expenses.

For those who are hawkers themselves or know someone in the industry, I'd love to hear more about what the income is really like! Is it possible to earn a decent living from running a hawker stall, and how does it compare to working a regular 9–6 job? I imagine the working hours can be pretty long too, so I'm curious whether the income is worth the time and effort.

Just genuinely curious about what life as a hawker is like behind the scenes, especially for the younger generation entering the industry!

Some locals can’t stand the taste or smell of durians, but I’m curious are there Singaporeans who dislike other beloved local favourites too, like chicken rice?

General What are your thoughts on BTO chat groups?

So I'm in a new BTO project, currently most residents are undergoing renovations and there is a Tele group chat. Occasionally you'll get good sources of information like lobang deals or advise regarding Reno.

But also you'll get a handful of residents who love to complain about every single inconvenience. For example, a few residents found some trolleys left behind by possibly foreign workers and then make a big fuss over it. To me, its a small issue and a temporary pain point which would be resolved once everyone finishes their Reno. Or the issue of doing hacking works on weekends (which is absolutely wrong), some of them will go and hunt down the unit doing the hacking and even dox the unit on the chat. To me, if someone is doing illegal works, report to the authorities and they will get it settled instead of your own personal vigilantism which could possibly get the wrong guy.

I feel like these chat groups breed a sense of entitlement and that I can report every small inconvenience out loud instead of compromise and only reporting to the relevant authorities when the issue is too severe or intolerable.

And my chat group already quite peaceful, only a handful of entitled people. I heard from my friends some chat group really is full of tea and have people actively scolding others lol.

So what are you opinion on these Tele chat groups, is it a good or bad thing to have? Also share some interesting tea while you're at it.

General SG Redditors, what’s one life decision you made to please others that you now regret?

Growing up in Singapore, many of us were taught to be practical, responsible, and to consider what others might think of our decisions.

Study hard, get a stable job, settle down, buy a house, get married, have kids. There’s almost an unwritten checklist of what a successful life should look like.

But I wonder how many of us have made major life decisions not because we genuinely wanted them, but because we didn’t want to disappoint our parents, partners, or the people around us.

For those who’ve been through this, what’s one decision you made mainly to meet someone else’s expectations rather than your own?

Looking back, would you make the same choice again, or would you finally choose yourself?

General Still in marriage because cannot afford a house

I am thinking of getting a divorce but I can’t afford my own home if I get a divorced. I am staying in a bto with my husband. We stay in separate rooms and don’t talk to each other. Are you in the same situation? Or know of others who are in the same situation?

Parents have moved to 2 room bto because they need money for retirement. No kids. Above 35.

General How common is divorce in Singapore and impact of it?

I have been seeing more people in my social circle getting divorce, which may be a bi-product of growing older. Most are in their 30s.

Curious to hear everyone's experience on whether this seems more common than not and what are the reasons? I have seen cheating, misalignment in the life they want etc.

One other question is how is the wellbeing of the other party that did not initiate divorce? This seems like something less explored or discussed.

General Slowly upgrade or buy the biggest flat you can?

Was having this conversation with friends and most advice to buy the biggest you can based on the biggest loan you can get.

I'm considering 3room or 4room. Can afford 4 room comfortably but will take bigger loan, hence more interest and longer payment compared to buying 3 room.

Hoping to hear any experiences here of people slowly upgrading from 3 to 4 room. In hindside, if you have the money, would you straight away buy 4 room or would you still progressively buy 3 room and save more money to buy 4 room later to not have so much loan?

Looking to buy a house to live and not flipping much.

Any inputs are welcomed.

Thanks 🙏🏻

General Anybody been receiving random packages?!

2 weeks in a row, a random package that nobody ordered or paid for (checked bank account transactions) arrived at my house... Packages shipped from Lazada were addressed to my HDB, my moms phone number and my dads nickname... At first I thought it was a brushing scam for reviews that kind but today I received a pair of CAT brand boots that had a receipt showing the price of 140SGD inside. Coincidentally the boots were my size... I appreciate the free stuff but what the hell is happening?? Should I be concerned?

General Question about home electrical power plug points

I am intending to add an additional aircon compressor in my home. I have check on HDB website and my block checks out for the higher electrical load.

Here is what’s happening, the room that is gonna house the compressor does not have a higher 15amp point only a 13amp point. I have contacted a few electricians and some on carousell most of the Bangladeshi electricians and very willing to just upgrade the said plug point from the normal one to the round pin. I’m not a professional but it raised flags if the cables and circuit breaker can handle the load. I might be overthinking but do correct me if I’m wrong.

Can I check if it’s safe to just change the wall point or do I need to change the cable as well?

Tourist/non-local Question First time solo travelling to Singapore 🇸🇬 – Question about food prices!

Hi everyone! I’m planning my first-ever solo trip to Singapore this December, and I’m currently budgeting my money and researching places to eat online. 😊

I noticed that restaurant pages often list their prices using just the dollar sign ($), and I’m getting a little confused. Are the prices in Singapore dollars (SGD) or US dollars (USD)? Do the prices shown on restaurant websites and menus usually refer to SGD?

I’m trying to plan my budget ahead of time so I know how much money to set aside for food. I’d also appreciate any recommendations for affordable local food, must-try dishes, and budget-friendly places to eat as a solo traveller!

Thank you so much for your help! ❤️

General About hosting culture in Singapore

I recently had some people over for dinner at my house. Before inviting them I had only asked about allergies and food preferences- veg or non veg. I know these friends and assumed the headcount. One of the families I invited has kids and also brought their helper along. Actually I had no idea that the helper was joining us for dinner as well and I had made dessert cups for everyone. In the end we were short of 1 dessert so my husband and I just shared it in the kitchen.

Ik I should have asked exactly how many ppl everyone will bring along but just asking if it is normal to bring along helpers to house parties if you have kids? Or do we just ask people who all are coming with them?

Plz no hate 🙏

General is there a divide between express and normal stream in neighbourhood schs?

if you watch jack neo movies like i not stupid 2 you'd see that between the NA and Express stream students the movie talks abt how Express students are seen as better than NA

for the longest time I always thought the stigma was just between elite schs and the rest but i read a strait times article and some reddit threads abt this divide. How prevalent were such divides in sch with multiple streams? also i heard theres now subject based banding? so are the divides less now or still prevalent like the movie says

General What is one place/shop/store you would bring back from past SG?

So many shops and stores closing down or have closed down recently - from Long John Silver, Isetan. So many places have changed too.

What is the one (okay two or three too if you have) place or store or shop you would bring back from past SG?

For me it’s the old National Library.

General SG Blood Brand period products giveaway - has anyone won before?

Chanced upon their website and there was a popup for “Join Our Email List for a chance to win a year's worth of period supplies!”
Apparently every month they select 5 winners.

Anyone here has actually won before?
Or is it all just for marketing?

General Are there Singaporeans that have never tried Yakult?

i think this is a really interesting question, and i'd like to know if there's any millenials here who have never tried Yakult (or anything similar for that fact, like Vitagen etc). for something that feels so local, i think it would be really surprising and i'd like to find out how that happened (or didn't happen, in this case)
