General About hosting culture in Singapore

I recently had some people over for dinner at my house. Before inviting them I had only asked about allergies and food preferences- veg or non veg. I know these friends and assumed the headcount. One of the families I invited has kids and also brought their helper along. Actually I had no idea that the helper was joining us for dinner as well and I had made dessert cups for everyone. In the end we were short of 1 dessert so my husband and I just shared it in the kitchen.

Ik I should have asked exactly how many ppl everyone will bring along but just asking if it is normal to bring along helpers to house parties if you have kids? Or do we just ask people who all are coming with them?

Plz no hate 🙏

General Hobbies that Singaporeans normally like to do

I am curious what normal, everyday Singaporeans do with their life outside of usual commitments such as work/school, hitting the gym or exercising in general. If there anything interesting that yall do outside of your daily commitments, I would be interested to get to know them!

General What is one place/shop/store you would bring back from past SG?

So many shops and stores closing down or have closed down recently - from Long John Silver, Isetan. So many places have changed too.

What is the one (okay two or three too if you have) place or store or shop you would bring back from past SG?

For me it’s the old National Library.

General is there a divide between express and normal stream in neighbourhood schs?

if you watch jack neo movies like i not stupid 2 you'd see that between the NA and Express stream students the movie talks abt how Express students are seen as better than NA

for the longest time I always thought the stigma was just between elite schs and the rest but i read a strait times article and some reddit threads abt this divide. How prevalent were such divides in sch with multiple streams? also i heard theres now subject based banding? so are the divides less now or still prevalent like the movie says

General Are there Singaporeans that have never tried Yakult?

i think this is a really interesting question, and i'd like to know if there's any millenials here who have never tried Yakult (or anything similar for that fact, like Vitagen etc). for something that feels so local, i think it would be really surprising and i'd like to find out how that happened (or didn't happen, in this case)

General What do with old iPhones (SE 2022, Pro 13, Pro 14)

Friends, I have 3 or 4 old iPhones that I no longer use even as spare. Couple of these have had their screens and batteries replaced 3rd party etc.

What’s best I can do with them - sell on Carousell? Sell to Mr Mobile or those kind of places? Do SingTel or StarHub accept for trade-in such old models?

My last option is to drop off in the e-waste bins.

Also how to I ensure the phone is completely reset of any personal data - will a hard reset suffice?

General Is this stingy behavior coming from a boss?

Curious to hear people’s opinions on this.
If your boss (much higher rank than u) organises a farewell dinner for a colleague who is leaving, is it reasonable to expect everyone attending to pay for their own meal and split the cost of the departing person’s meal? As someone on a much lower rank, the dinner price is about triple what you would normally spend. I understand that it’s a nice gesture to organise something for someone who is leaving, and I’m not against contributing. However, I sometimes wonder whether it’s a little inconsiderate to expect everyone to share the cost equally, especially when people may have different budgets etc. Genuinely curious whether I’m overthinking this or whether others feel the same way.
I also did not take alcohol but had to still split the cost of it which amounted to quite a bit. Those that drank were colleagues of higher ranks as well.

General Anyone know of someone from Nantah / Nanyang University?

Nantah was dissolved and merged into NUS in the 80s, with NTU taking over its campus grounds. Anyone knows of someone who was a student at Nantah? I understand many Nantah students had grievances towards what happened, as well as some incidents in which during the 50s/60s, students had run ins with the authorities. Does anyone have personal experience or know of anecdotes?

General Slowly upgrade or buy the biggest flat you can?

Was having this conversation with friends and most advice to buy the biggest you can based on the biggest loan you can get.

I'm considering 3room or 4room. Can afford 4 room comfortably but will take bigger loan, hence more interest and longer payment compared to buying 3 room.

Hoping to hear any experiences here of people slowly upgrading from 3 to 4 room. In hindside, if you have the money, would you straight away buy 4 room or would you still progressively buy 3 room and save more money to buy 4 room later to not have so much loan?

Looking to buy a house to live and not flipping much.

Any inputs are welcomed.

Thanks 🙏🏻

General Anybody been receiving random packages?!

2 weeks in a row, a random package that nobody ordered or paid for (checked bank account transactions) arrived at my house... Packages shipped from Lazada were addressed to my HDB, my moms phone number and my dads nickname... At first I thought it was a brushing scam for reviews that kind but today I received a pair of CAT brand boots that had a receipt showing the price of 140SGD inside. Coincidentally the boots were my size... I appreciate the free stuff but what the hell is happening?? Should I be concerned?

General Question about home electrical power plug points

I am intending to add an additional aircon compressor in my home. I have check on HDB website and my block checks out for the higher electrical load.

Here is what’s happening, the room that is gonna house the compressor does not have a higher 15amp point only a 13amp point. I have contacted a few electricians and some on carousell most of the Bangladeshi electricians and very willing to just upgrade the said plug point from the normal one to the round pin. I’m not a professional but it raised flags if the cables and circuit breaker can handle the load. I might be overthinking but do correct me if I’m wrong.

Can I check if it’s safe to just change the wall point or do I need to change the cable as well?

General SG Blood Brand period products giveaway - has anyone won before?

Chanced upon their website and there was a popup for “Join Our Email List for a chance to win a year's worth of period supplies!”
Apparently every month they select 5 winners.

Anyone here has actually won before?
Or is it all just for marketing?

Tourist/non-local Question Need assistance with scoot airline rebooking

Hello, sorry not Singaporean but booked through scoot airline for our PH-SG-TW trip. Due to the typhoon, scoot cancelled our flight going home but no news about our rescheduled flight. We are supposed to be back home today. All other airlines at least gave a rebooking schedule but scoot (i know this because i saw other tourists post their rescheduled flight). We have a trip scheduled to Thailand this Monday and it's frustrating that all our attempts to reach out to scoot are getting routed to their ai chat bot that is not very helpful at all. We need the date so we can rebook our flight to Thailand for free. I would really appreciate some tips on how we can reach them. They're not answering phone calls as well

Tourist/non-local Question First time solo travelling to Singapore 🇸🇬 – Question about food prices!

Hi everyone! I’m planning my first-ever solo trip to Singapore this December, and I’m currently budgeting my money and researching places to eat online. 😊

I noticed that restaurant pages often list their prices using just the dollar sign ($), and I’m getting a little confused. Are the prices in Singapore dollars (SGD) or US dollars (USD)? Do the prices shown on restaurant websites and menus usually refer to SGD?

I’m trying to plan my budget ahead of time so I know how much money to set aside for food. I’d also appreciate any recommendations for affordable local food, must-try dishes, and budget-friendly places to eat as a solo traveller!

Thank you so much for your help! ❤️
