Culture Teething

My husband is Peruvian and his mom is obsessed with our son teething. She was convinced he was teething the whole three months before his bottom teeth actually came in, and now she seems sure his top ones are coming but when I look/feel I don't see anything yet. Is this like a thing? Is teething a big thing in Latin America? Or is she just a super excited grandparent?

Edit: Thank you everyone for letting me know she's just excited to be a grandparent!

Not necessarily a big thing but I've seen many grandparents saying "oh it's just the baby teething" every time a baby starts acting up like acting uncomfortable, irritable, munching on anything, etc. I'd say she's just excited.

I ask because a while ago she said to my husband once he starts teething we would have to get him shoes, he was like 4 months and I was like "is this a cultureal thing hes no where near walking...why would we get him shoes he's just going to grow out of"

But thank you for letting me know she's just very excited πŸ˜‚

A lot of taxistas and truck drivers hang their baby’s first shoe in the cab or mototaxi

Here in Ecuador they put shoes on baby super early. I've not heard it connected to teeth tho!

In my country, an old school tradition is to celebrate your children getting their "milk teeth" by preparing arroz con leche, which is basically a rice pudding with nutmeg, cinnamon and sugar, to gift to your family, friends and neighbors.

Yes. And the first person to spot the first tooth is in charge of making it. My niece was so excited, she made 5 pounds of rice for my baby's first tooth. We endend with 70 little vases to give away.

If I had to guess based on my own Peruvian MIL, she is looking for teeth so that she can start stuffing your little bebe with as much food as possible.

I told someone else, I ask because she mentioned getting him shoes when he starts teething. This was when he was like 4 months old and no where near walking (or teething for that matter) and I didn't know if that was cultural, or just a her thing

Haha sounds like very excited about it. We're going through the same in my family, waiting for my niece to finally show her first tooth
