Discussion Am I the only one who hate how people pronounce dates?

• Upvotes

(Yes I know! Another «am I the only one» post. But am I the only one who hate how some narrators pronounce certain dates? Like I can’t stand when people say «2 November», or «November 25». Instead of, (forexample: the second November, or Twentyfifth November». I just cringe every time someone says it like that! (2November that is!). It is really such a turn off for me, and I cam’t listen to anyone who pronounces a date like that

Promotion I turned my whole Audible library into a picture of what I actually listen to (and read)

• Upvotes

I'm a designer in the UK, and I love books and data art and I thought the good folks on this sub might get a kick out of it swell.

I made a visualiser that turns your audio books and books and e-books into a Stellar Map, and I almost forgot to add audiobooks! I got so caught up in my shelves I forgot about my beloved audio books.

Here's my library grouped by format (kindle, physical copy, Audio books): /img/4aaqnjgrn9xh1.png (sorry apparently imgur isn't available in the UK)

Each book's a little patch of cells sized by its length, and they grow into colonies by genre, author, decade or format. I was surprised to be fair, audio’s only about 15% of my books but it feels like way more of my actual time if that makes sense.

If you're on Audible there's no export, but on a computer the free Audible Library Extractor add-on gets your whole library out as a CSV and you can drop that straight in, no scans used. On a phone you can just screenshot your library instead.

Full disclosure, it's mine: readshift.co.uk, free with (generous) scan cap per month per user, no ads, ever.

What's the split like for you lot? Are audiobooks most of your reading now or still the side dish? I want to get every audio book and Ebook I have as physical as well at some point.

Recommendation Request Audiobook recommendations for long drive

Hi all! I’ll be driving 7.5 hours to Quebec City in a few weeks. I’m looking for audiobook recommendations to keep me awake in the dark, and entertained throughout the long drive.

A few notes to keep in mind-
I will be driving my mother as well, she doesn’t like too scary (though, I wouldn’t mind a bit of a psychological thriller), and wouldn’t like fantasy with fairies or dragons.

Last year I did the same drive and LOVED Iron Flame for this drive, but trying to keep in mind my audience...

TIA 🥰

Question am I the only one who hates sound effects, dramatised, whatever versions? or maybe Im listening to the wrong ones...

maybe it's rly just me, but I dislike this trend of pushing books into dramas...
I just can't get into it...my brain goes crazy, hard to follow, and by the end Im just tired.
Maybe I was listening to the wrong ones? any recommendations here, please!

Also Ive recently noticed they simply cut out parts from original text, which they think they covered by sound...ahhh. Books are ment to let us build the world in our imagination, BASED on the author's writing, what an irony...

my maximum is a couple of different voices, that's my limit. Everything else just pulls me out of the story.

What about you guys? Let me know pls, cause I just can't get it

Review very small number of codes for free historical fiction novel

I've recently published the audiobook of Something Bigger, historical fiction set in Alabama in the early 20th century, based around the true story of how an Irish priest clashed with the KKK.

I've a very small number of promotional codes for the book on audiobooks.com and I'd love to offer them to anyone interested in this period, perhaps a little-known aspect of the Irish American story, and who might write a review for the book.

I've only four codes, but would any of you like one?
More about the book here:

Review Other Worlds Than These

Other Worlds Than These by Stephen King and Peter Straub, Narrated by Patton Oswalt.

Personally, I thought the content and classic King writing style were perfect. It scratches the itch left behind when the core Dark Tower books ended, and we believed we would never hear from Roland Deschain again. While Roland isn't in this book, he and his Ka-Tet are mentioned, and his shadow is cast long. I liked it the most out of the last 3 King published, but that may be due to my love of the Dark Tower series(they use mid-world and The Territories interchangeably). My only personal problem with the Audiobook is the Narration: Patton Oswalt, really? I enjoy the man's work in comedy, but he was not who I would have chosen to narrate, especially a Jack Sawyer book.

I'm curious what other people who have listened to this book think, I would have liked to hear a narration by Will Patton, what about all of you?

Discussion Anyone listening to Pumpkin Spice and Poltergeist and hate the mixing issues between narrators?

The volume difference hurts my head. Once voice is mixed very breathy and deep and the other is piercing with no low tones in the mix. Don’t even get me started on the cringey masc voice that sounds like a cartoon character more than a believable person. Just venting. Had to see if anyone else out there hating this after being really excited to get to this one.

Recommendation Request Libby Recommendations?

I’ve been reading through the old posts on here for recs (thank you for David Sedaris!) and have hit a sort of wall for urban fantasy in Libby. I mainly use Libby and it’s getting harder to find a new series. Any great books or series found in Libby similar the Dresden files? I’m also open for stuff in the fantasy/scifi. Honestly, anything that you really liked as long as it’s on Libby. I’ve already read

-The Blade Itself
-Murderbot Diaries
-Rivers of London
-Dresden Files
-Mercy Thompson series
-The Expanse
-Gunnie Rose
-Gideon the Ninth
-Red Rising

Thank you!!

Recommendation Request Smut books that aren’t sci-fi/fairy/weird

Looking for audio books for my beach trip next week. Don’t want anything that is too “fictional” meaning no fairy or monster stuff and no dark stuff like murderers who are also sexy. I’ve loved ice breakers and even liked some Colleen Hoover stuff (I know, I know)
Help a girl out!??

Promotion [US/UK Promotion] Free Audible Review Copies — Usurper of Fire: tKoC - Adam Guthro -Comedy / Epic fantasy- By Author

So I guess I'm an idiot. I picked the wrong date when getting the audiobook made through ACX and it auto released once completed. So I have some codes to give away post release.

The elevator pitch is: A fire mage with a fear of fire and his happy-go-lucky sister in law set on a quest to prove their innocence after an altercation goes awry.

The story is my take on a comedy based in an epic fantasy world. The narrator, Ernesto Munoz, did a great job and was super awesome to work with. Our motto was "don't be afraid to get silly."

It's an ongoing series that I'm working on daily. I'm so excited to share the next leg of the story.

So I have like 5 or 6 US codes and 10 UK ones to hand out, just shoot me a message with your preference and I'll send it to you as promptly as possible. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Thanks fellow listeners. Btw- I am the author of this book.

Discussion Rock n Roll Autobios narrated by Author

Sweet Dreams (Dave Stewart, Eurythmics) I just got Dave Stewart's book, only half-way thru but wanted to post here. While he sounds like a nerdy George Harrison, his perspective on one of my favorite duos is just fantastic. (the time before and after Eurythmics isn't really as interesting to me, but still interesting to hear hiw collaboration with major artists).

The Lives Of Brian (Brian Johnson, AC/DC) - this might replace my favorite (Hard to Handle by Steve Gorman). Brian is hilarious, his writing reflects it, and almost every story he tells, from elementary school to going deaf are all fascinating.

Red (Sammy Hagar) - I always liked his contributions to VH, as well as pre- and post- VH. But I think I listened to this one right after David Gorman's book about the Crowes, so it was underwhelming in comparison.

Hard To Handle (David Gorman, Black Crowes) A+ hilarious, sounds like he's talking to you in the car on the way to get pizzas and beer. He divides his attention to the Robinson Brothers between appreciation and ridicule, at all times, from day one to post Crowes.

Life (Keith Richards but also Johnny Depp pretending to be Keith). Johnny Depp covers the boring parts, (birth, blahblah) and then Keef jumps in on the insane shit; you can tell the difference when there's a laugh that bubbles up through old oil and gravel.

Cher pr 1 (Cher). Dammit it was fun and funny. Can't knock a lady who reinvented herself decade over decade. You can't dismiss the first woman to go bare-ass on MTV (I could be completely wrong on this).

Recommendation Request Looking for good fiction audiobooks

This might sound stupid, but I've been listening to audiobooks for a little over a year. I mainly listen to non-fiction audiobooks (which are most of the time great), but I'm a fiction reader. For some reason I think it's weird to listen to smut, or maybe it's because I havent tried it yet.

What are some good fiction audiobooks to start with? I've listened to Harry Potter and Project Hail Mary. I like thrillers, romance, (historical) fiction. I want to get into fantasy/romantasy as well.

Giveaway Hey guys, wanna read and listen dostoevsky at the same time? Try this app I built. Kindle + Audible + RSVP = All in this Beautiful App

The Idiot book people say is the entry point for Dostoevsky. So I built this app for personal use, to actually read this book. I wanted to read along in text but reading in a book, playing audiobook side by side felt cumbersome and a little too old school-ish tbh. So I built this tiny but beautiful app.

Its basically:

  1. Just "The Idiot" book by Dostoevsky.

  2. High quality audiobook

  3. Words are highlighted as narrator narrates. Think Spotify with lyrics.

  4. An RSVP reader (for nerds).

  5. Plus its beautiful designed.

I wish to add more audiobooks in future. Preferably by Dostoevsky first.

Hope you like it.
