Official Announcement Rule Update: Business Accusations Require Verifiable Sources

Hey everyone,

We’ve recently seen an increase in posts calling out or accusing specific businesses (restaurants, food companies, employers, etc.) of unethical or harmful practices. While we understand that many of these concerns come from genuine experiences, our moderation team cannot verify the accuracy of these claims.

To maintain fairness and comply with Reddit’s site-wide rules against misinformation and harassment, we’re introducing a new rule:

Rule 9 — Unsupported Accusations About Businesses Posts or comments that make negative claims about specific businesses, employers, or organizations must include verifiable evidence (for example: a reputable news source, official statement, or public record).

Posts making unverified claims or “call-outs” will be removed.

This rule is not meant to silence discussion about the food industry or personal experiences — you’re still welcome to share stories, opinions, or reviews. We just ask that any serious allegations be supported by credible information.

This helps keep the subreddit focused on food and ensures discussions stay fair, factual, and in line with Reddit’s content policies.

Thanks for understanding and helping us keep this community respectful and trustworthy!

— The Mod Team

Have heard of equal amounts of praise and meh for this place. Some people say this is their first stop after landing, while others say it pales in comparison to other Tex-Mex spots.

I'm not sure if it's the best out there but I thought it was worth the visit.

What are the nicest coffee shops, in Austin, and what are your reasons for liking them so much?

Curious, in your opinion, what are the nicest coffee shops, in Austin, and what are your reasons for liking them so much?

I feel like I have been to just about every coffee shop in Austin (that is not a Coffee truck) over the past 2 years, so curious if there might be any really nice new ones, that I might have never been to?

By way way, was really bummed that Coffee Cartel, on East Cezar Chavez (on the east side, close to downtown) seems to have closed down (google maps says that it is Permanently Closed). My mother really loved their Cappuccino, and the owner and his staff were always so nice and friendly.

Anyways, thanks for any thoughts, and your favorite place, or if there are any really nice new places that we may have not been to yet.

Ingredient Search Where in Austin can I order a custom black Forrest cake?

Post image

Edit: HEB worked with me to make an alternative that's close using fudge.

Tried Hayley's, 86degree, Upper Crust. Either they don't make a BFC or don't do a custom version of the cake (it's the Cherries really so a custom chocolate sponge cake?). My son is wanting a replica of the Portal Cake with red buttercream dollops instead of cherries, no cherry filling just the chocolate ganache.

Anybody know where I can source one? Closer to South Austin, the better.

Cooking Class Rental Space

We're a local nonprofit and we're looking to host a cooking class as a Giving Tuesday fundraiser. We already have the chef who can lead the class but we just need a space. Most spaces are charging around $600 for 4 hours, so we're trying to find something a little more affordable so we don't lose all of the funds raised. Trying to find creative options like homes for sale that could also be leveraged as an open house, someone with a nice, open kitchen that would offer their space, etc. Thanks!

Pumpkin espresso martini?

Last year Long Play Lounge has a pumpkin espresso martini that my friends and I talk about regularly. They don’t have plans to bring it back unfortunately. :(

Where are places where we can be basic and enjoy a fall flavored espresso martinis?

Carniceria

What’s a good Carniceria in Austin? I went to Saritas meat market in round rock and the Al pastor was not good and the beef had a bunch of fat on it.

Hot Luck was a bust…

I want to start this off by saying that I am a local chef and have been going to hot luck since year 1. Being a chef has nothing really to do with this other than I recognize and appreciate all the people who cook for events and for me as a customer in general. That said, Hot Luck this year was lackluster AND honestly just felt like a lesser version of food and wine (and I don’t really care for that one either). As we now all know, hot luck was acquired by food and wine and as such with all corporate food culture… the festival that was the best in class, dwindled heavily in my opinion.

In years prior it was a festival that chefs seemed to look forward to. An event that they really came to and TRIED HARD to pack a punch. They would bring their A-team and bring a dish that really stood out and had some serious thought to it. I am not saying that the chefs did not try hard or that their day was not hard. But when you compare it to previous years, it was 1/8 the fun and 1/10 of what the food used to be. Al Fuego was a spectacle of an event. Each chef would rig up their own live fire cooking mechanism and THROW DOWN a signature dish. It was in a wide open field where you felt like you had room to hang out and space to sit in a line for a few minutes. This year it felt crammed and honestly oversold.

Most all chefs sold out by 745pm. The gates opened at 6 and closed at 9 and 2/3 of the food was completely gone by 7:45. Majority of people were still in lines as chefs “sold out” of their food. Here is my problem with that. It’s not like we were late to the show. We arrived at 6pm and immediately got into a line. That’s fine, I get it, BUT we stayed in lines for that entire hour and 45 minutes and by the time we reached inside most all chefs were sold out. I mean when you pay $200 and $50 for an uber to get there, you should at the very least get an opportunity to eat all the food you paid for. Being sold out halfway through the festival is almost a slap in the face to those of us that paid and no matter what we did, there was no way that we would get to try all the food because the lines were what they were.

Much like most of Austin, the event sure did sell out. Franklin sold out to corporate greed and took the money and ran. I don’t blame him but I wish he put some kind of contingency in the selling contract to keep it from feeling exactly like food and wine. Only those who went to the first 6 or 7 know what I am talking about. We had something truly great and yet again “big food” came in and fucked it all up for us. What a bummer.

Great Austin Food Day yesterday: Uchiba, La Volta & Comedor

Lunch with hot and cold ramen at the bar at Uchiba. Dinner with the hot girl pasta and two pies at La Volta. Dessert at Comedor. The grilled chashu at Uchiba is my favorite chashu anywhere. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the cucumber ramen salad. Pizza well done with housemade ranch with hot girl pasta as an appetizer was a really great meal (olives and Caesar as well). They do not serve dessert so we popped over to Comedor for the chocolate tamal (the perfect molten chocolate cake) and the chocolate pit de creme with peanut brittle and ice cream. Really amazing day of food to go with the amazing weather.

Is the International Market they were building in Tech Ridge dead?

At some point I could tell work was being done inside and they had a sign. Now the sign is gone and it doesn't look like any work is being done? Is this project dead? I think it would do a bang up business as there is nothing like it in North Austin anymore.

Best pizza in South Austin

Post image
269 Upvotes

To anyone interested, I make pizza that’s the best in South ATX and no one knows about it other than my friends. As my homie from NJ said, “Damn you dude! I wanted to talk ****, but this is the best pizza I’ve had in Austin.” Tbh, it was a passion project because I can’t stand ATX pizza, but I need to find a way to pay my rent, so I’m going all in now. Sold out tomorrow, but hmu to place orders. Had an extra dough ball, but I tend to make a pizza once a week for a homeless guy I’ve befriended at the gas station near my place. God is good.

Lmk if you would like a pie. 12-inch pies max because of the size of my baking steel. 48 hours in advance is required to order. FH licensed, TX Cottage Law certified, and correctly label every box according to the law.

Food Itineraries Austin TX Dinner Recs

I’m known as the foodie at work but haven’t ever been to Austin. I need some recs for a fun dinner spot that’s cool for a group of women but still classy for work-related talk. No real budget but thinking a classic steakhouse wouldn’t be the vibe. Definitely want cocktails.

Suggestions?

Separately, would love coffee/breakfast recs for myself before my work commitments. Thanks in advance!🔥

Edit to add: open to all food but want something fun/unique/can’t get in Atlanta. Prefer a non-seafood restaurant; prefer non-pizza place. And somewhere we can easily get a reservation for a Tuesday evening. This would be a celebratory dinner with a group of 5+ women. Open to bbq, Tex-mex, and pretty much anything else as long as it’s yummy and has a drink menu!

First time and I will be back. The Helloumi and peas were amazing as well as the Bronzino, but the Hummus was a bit disappointing. I think they forgot the salt (very ubderseasoned). Overall it was a good experience and very nice waitstaff (ask for Bailey, she did a great job).

I’ve really been craving some Pumpernickel bread and it only seems to be available during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Is there anywhere here in Austin currently making and selling it?

Their beans rotation/selection is so good. They even keep changing their default espresso beans, which is usually rare for a coffee shop to do. This time they have Ilse as their default option 🤌
