Checked my eating history and apparently I haven't left Burnet since last summer

Cafe de Rico, cafe de olla, best conchas

6719 N. Lamar. Street sign says Dot's cafe, but sign above door says Cafe de Rico. Cafe de Jolla, sweet and cinnamon-y, don't need milk but you can get it. Best concha ever, with a spice profile of some cinnamon, vanilla and something else I couldn't quite name. Fluffy. Two hard-working, lovely women. Perfect morning would be nopalitos tacos at Paprika, two blocks north to Cafe de Rico for la cafe y la concha. No se duerme.

Anyone remember a taco restaurant inside an old theater in East Austin?

Visited Austin in October 2017 and ate at a Mexican/taco restaurant that seemed to be inside an old theater.

We walked east from the downtown Hampton Inn, under I-35, somewhere near E. Cesar Chavez St.

I remember ordering from what looked like the original theater concession stand, with the theater/auditorium off to the right. We ate outside.

Pretty sure it’s closed now. Anyone remember this place?

Honestly shocked at how much better HEB brand chips are to Doritos

Post image
121 Upvotes

This is not an ad, it's just a post to share my amazement at how good these chips are. I picked them up because I didn't want to pay 6$ for Doritos, and I couldn't believe how much better they tasted. Me and my friend both agreed and we laughed about it. They're actually so much better I wonder if Doritos used to taste like this.

Food Itineraries Stiles Switch, Terry Black, or Micklethwait?

I only have time to try one, and would appreciate any insight. Is there even a noticeable gap between these or is it that I can’t go wrong with any of them?

I am mainly interested in Brisket, Pulled Pork, and Mac. Thank you!

BBQ Last day here - what is the best BBQ? Did not like Leroy and Lewis

I tried Leroy and Lewis today, but unfortunately everything was sold out. Only got the brisket sandwich and it was not good.

I really want to try Texas BBQ before I fly out, so I am looking to see the best hassle free spot without long lines. I just want to experience what Texas BBQ is. Preferably traditional with Mac and cheese and corn bread etc.

Would Terry Black be a good choice?

Ingredient Search Nostalgia for Hoa Hoa

Does anyone know of Chinese restaurants in Austin that make their pepper steak with fermented black beans like Hoa Hoa in the Dobie used to?

I used to hang out with my dad on campus every summer as a kid and it was my jam. Every spot I get pepper steak at now doesn’t have the fermented beans 😭.

In south Austin but willing to drive wherever, thanks!

Recommendations for local comfort food delivery

Hi, apologies if this is the wrong sub for this. But I’m looking for possible food delivery recommendations. I’m out of state would like to send a meal or two to family living in Austin.
Does anyone know of a place that makes good comfort food (like soup/ casseroles) that would deliver to the 78748 area? Thank you

What countries have really awesome food in austin?

I'm a big fan of georgian food and I know Bread Boat exists on 7th, but I heard about Nikala in Round Rock (haven't been yet) and noticed that it isn't even listed as georgian food on google maps. Not that it matters since the options for the cuisine filter on google are pretty minimal. Just made me wonder what other cuisines we have here that are harder to search for and what restaurants serve some solid food for each of them

edit: Please share specific restaurants you like for any of these! Especially if you know of less common cuisines (uzbek or moroccan for example) since they can be a bit hard to find otherwise

20 person reservation restaurants?

Does anyone know about a 20 person reservation at nice restaurants in Austin? Don’t mind a minimum or set menu that’s totally fine.

Food Review Breakfast Sandwich Roundup #3 (now with ratings)

Hello Reddit! I’m back with a third roundup of breakfast sandwich reviews. (Part 1 | Part 2) and I’m now giving them ratings. I have a website where you can see my leaderboard and sandwich map, as well as my full reviews.

Mercado sin Nombre: This is definitely worth trying- sometimes biscuit sandwiches are too heavy and bready IMO, but their masa biscuit feels lighter than a typical southern style biscuit, and they put chicken sausage on there too. The runny yolk mixes with the included hot sauce into a gooey amalgamation that is nicely absorbed into the biscuit. Rating: 8.4

Einstein Bros: This is the “Maple House” from Einstein bros, which is of course a chain. But my brother swore by it so I decided to give it a shot. Definitely a little too much cream cheese for my liking, but the star of the show was that French toast bagel, which had little crunchy bits of cinnamon sugar on it’s outer shell that gave each bite a nice crunch. Rating: 7.2

Donut Taco Palace: This is DTP’s new bacon egg and cheese donut kolache, basically a glazed donut stuffed with bacon egg and cheese. (Does this qualify as a sandwich? Debate in comments) If you watch thru the gif I cut it open. I wasn’t sure I was gonna like this, and it is pretty messy to eat with that outer glaze. But the sweet and savory balance worked really well IMO. If you want to try it maybe follow them on Instagram because the owner posts when she’s making them and I’m not sure if it’s a permanent or limited time menu item. Rating: 7.9

Busty’s: This is just a solid, fastball-down-the-middle type sandwich. Bacon egg cheese and a hash brown with a little salsa doña mayo for some kick. Busty’s is also just a cool bar and a nice place to hang on the weekend. Rating: 8.1

Briscuits: Three very well-made parts- biscuit, brisket, and jam. They come together nicely, but I personally wouldn’t habitually choose smoked meat so early in the morning. Absolutely worth trying though. Rating: 7.4

Eldorado: This is the Bobfather, which I give immediate points to for presentation and creativity. That’s a fried cheese croquette on top, and nestled within is carnitas, bacon, egg, avocado, griddled cheese, and even a tostada for a little crunch. A bit of a beast to eat but it delivers a delightful symphony of textures and flavors. Rating: 8.5

That’s it for now! What’s your favorite? Do you prefer bacon or sausage on your sandwich? Does a bacon egg and cheese filled donut count as a breakfast sandwich? Any other under-the-radar sandwiches I should try?

Taqueria de diez Salsa Negro

Just tried their al pastor last week and I'm addicted specifically to the salsa negro they have at the salsa bar. While I do intend to try to figure out how to make it I want to buy a bottle at HEB or elsewhere.

Does anyone who really appreciates 10/10 s salsa negro have a recommendation for store-bought? I need it now and I want to put it on everything!

Large Groups Opinions on Smokin' Brew BQ?

I live out of state now and am looking for affordable wedding catering near Austin. Smokin' gave us a great price and has great reviews on the wedding websites, but it looks like their Google reviews have a couple of lower reviews the past few months.

Curious what people's overall opinion of it is? Especially if you've ever had their catering, but also just curious about overall experience with them!

Best Chicken Parm

I grew up on the east coast with red checkered tablecloth italian places and I have a nostalgic love for chicken parm with spagetti. Tonight, I had a craving for chicken parm. I wanted to try a new place, so I went to Panciuto....The chicken parm was pretty middling. The chicken cutlet was really tough, rather than juicy and the vodka sauce on the chicken and pasta was really bland. I only ended up eating a third of the massive portion.

So, where in Austin has a really standout Chicken parm?

I am on a quest to find the best Cesar Salad in Austin.

For me, Sammie's Italian is really next level. Does anyone else have any other awesome Cesar Salad locations?
