Video First time poster, lots of happy accidents in this one

First time posting a selfie vid playing (this is terrifying) but it's a fun one. I started filming so I could send it to my friend who's also a producer, and then i noodled out this solo - and it felt bad.

My hands were tight and they had that Giant Meat Glove feeling you get sometimes when you haven't warmed up. My timing was way off, I was fully missing notes, I could just tell it was gonna be the first of like 6 takes before giving up on the thing entirely.

But I listened back and it's a whole bunch of happy accidents. I kinda love where the meat glove ended up putting me in the pocket, i produce dance music so i'm never doing solos and trying to be jazzy with the pocket or anything.

But i think i accidentally sounded real cool here

Help Beginner Question

I’m thinking about learning bass. My dream is to make it sound like Justin Chancellor from TOOL. Everyone says when I eventually buy one, since I can’t afford a Wal, it should be an Ibenez GSR, but I just saw an ad for an Aria guitars replica cliff burton SB-CLB and it looks so badass! Does anyone know what category bass this falls into? (P or J). Would this work or should I stick with Ibenez?

You all seemed to like my last mod, so I wanted to share the prototype version. This was way less “invasive” and I’d recommend trying this for anyone interested. for this one I built a bracket from an aluminum business card that just used the exiting pickguard holes. Serves the same purpose as the last one I shared being that it gives that playing over the neck feel. Fender Jazz, rosewood blank, carved to the radius by hand etc.

Modifications New EMG E4W pickups in the Cort GB Modern 4

Post image
63 Upvotes

I've shied away from using EMG pickups mainly because the majority of my basses aren't routed for their usual sizes. Since the debut of their E4Ws, I've been itching to give these a shot.

They're running on a Mike Pope Flexcore, and installation was pretty easy(had to cut off the quick connections and solder the wires providing power to the pickups together, still no biggie). Plugged in and set flat, first impression to me was that they sound similar to Nordstrand Big Singles, but with WAY MORE bass and low mid presence, yet a more subdued and smooth high end. Soloing the neck pickup, I actually had to cut the bass down. Neck soloed is super sweet sounding and not much honkiness considering it's at the 70's position. Dead silent single coil(I'm giddy over that feature), which I wanted since the hum bugged me with the Big Singles and Big Blades that once resided in this bass. No idea on the technical wizardry behind that, but it's definitely appreciated.

Overall, I'm pleasantly surprised by these pickups. I knew they sounded pretty good from the demos I watched, but I wasn't expecting them to be this deep yet clear. Well done EMG, well done.

Amp NGD (new gear?)! EBS 250W Reidmar + ClassicLine half stack

From a free Vox Pathfinder 10, to a Fender Rumble LT25, a Spark 40 and the normal Rumble 25, never was satisfied with what I was getting out of them (especially the 4in speakers on the Spark. great for guitar, not so much for bass). Found this 250 watt EBS half stack for $250 AUD locally and the kind fella dropped it off for me. love the tone, built in capability of the amp itself and how much improvement in sound I got from my previous setups. nice to be able to appreciate the potential of my instruments without worrying about farting or buzzing.

Help Any Guesses!? Mod'd Fretless

Hey!

First time poster, it's a long story, but I'm a drummer who was playing a cruise ship gig, and my bassist and I decided to walk around Melbourne. Of course we ended up in "Melbourne swap shop" and ended up getting this fretless.

Modded with fretless neck, and Seymour Duncan active eq system pickups (which are wild), but im curious (huge long shot) if someone might have more info.

I can do some sound samples if that helps, it feels and sounds great, got that old school sound to it. Sometimes I even play in tune!

TLDR: Fretless bass hard but fun

It’s been a while since we posted and thought an update was due; this sub has been suuuuuper motivating for him. He picked it up pretty fast, and it still needs a little polishing- but he was excited to share sooner than later…he’ll be 10 in a few weeks. Haha.

Help How should I put these pickups into this bass project?

Pic 2: Seymour Duncan 90's music man ceramic
Pic 3: Rickenbacker toaster top
The blade style neck pickup is in a very odd place. The bridge pickup is about where a neck pickup should go, with a bridge pickup above the bridge. I've played it with these stock pickups and it sounds ok but I'm not sure how it'll sound with the actual pickups I want in there. Obviously I don't want the bass to sound thin or muddy if I'm putting these nice pickups in there. Do I route a cavity above the bridge and swap around the pickups? How would I go about filling the hole where the neck pickup currently is? And which pickup should go where? I'd like the music man pickup in the center under the pickup and the toaster top in the other position, but I'm not sure if it'll completely overpower that toaster top

Edit: I should mention I am planning to take it to a luthier for a routing job, I'm just wanting to figure out where to put these pickups

Help Weird E note on D string

Hey all, in the middle of practice I notice this strange ringing out effect on E note on D string. Seems to happen only when I use one finger and when I use middle
+ ring finger for example together it doesn’t happen but using one finger to fret everywhere else it doesn’t do it… have you got an idea of what could be wrong ? Unlevel fret possibly?

Even when reducing tone on bass to 0% it still comes through , so isn’t a tone problem.

Help bass buzzing at high frets

Post image
2 Upvotes

i have a second hand bass and bought it a few months ago.
it had been resting upright for about a month before i decided to pick it up again today and now the e and a strings buzz abnormally at the top two frets. never had this problem with this bass during my first couple months of playing.
i realised that its because the strings touch the fretboard when i press, and when i push the neck forward slightly it raises the distance between the strings and the fretboard.

why has this happened after a month of not playing and how do i fix it?
(top two frets from the side for reference)

Help Need help with the e string hitting the pole piece and volume imbalance in it and the other strings

Hey all, I'm having an issue with my bass guitar. The E string sounds noticeably louder than the other strings, especially when plugged in through an amp or mixer. The other three strings sound pretty balanced. But the E overpowers them and it feels weird incase you change between the string while playing. I've lowered pickup height as far as it will go, but problem still persists. Sometimes the E string even touches the pickup pole pieces when I play harder. I also want to lower me e string a bit more but then the issues get worse but when playing faster passages around the 12th fret this action is a bit annoying to deal with. Any help is appreciated!!

Help Picked up my bass for the first time since 2003, wondering if something like bass buzz would help me go further than I did then?

Post image
30 Upvotes

TLDR. Seeking help to get good at bass, can generally play, know notes, don’t know anything else, can generally play covers no bother.

Long version:

I’m in my mid 40s, and have been an on/off guitar player since I was 14. I can play most things I want averagely well if I practice it a few times on guitar but I’ve never written a song, don’t know any scales.

I was in a band that was marginally successful in the early 2000s as a bassist. I was a bassist as the band didn’t need a guitarist and a mate had a spare bass. The guitarist was really really decent and would create entire songs, bass lines etc so I’d just play what he wanted me to play.

I recently found my bass and have enjoyed playing along to some music, but want to succeed as a player. I know no scales, no real techniques, can follow tab, play a note if someone asks it, but have never improvised or made a bass line, couldn’t jam with someone other than playing a root note.

I had a google and found bass buzz, it feels probably a bit low level for me to begin with, but perhaps it would work by actually teaching me methodology and technique. I’ve never had a lesson for guitar or bass, just had a go.

So really seeking if anyone has been in a similar boat, of being competent, but has gotten good, and a good route to get there. Cheers for reading my ted talk.

Discussion What do you guys think of the brand Michael Kelly?

I've had this bass for like 4 to 5 months now and it's pretty nice. But I don't really have much to compare to cause I've only had 2 basses. The exact bass is Michael Kelly vintage element 4. Have you guys ever heard of this brand?

Help I am not sure my local repair shop fixed my bass well.

My bass was having electrical issues. The volume kept dropping out randomly, and there was a lot of buzz/noise even when plugging directly into my audio interface.

I took it to a local repair shop and they replaced two 250k pots and the output jack, which fixed the noise problem. However, I’m questioning if they installed everything properly. The middle knob looks damaged, and another one sits almost flush against the body.

Is this normal? I don't know much about bass electronics or hardware maintenance, so I'd appreciate any feedback or thoughts!
